Yo! I used to looovvvveee A&R! Even when I used to date the barbecue King, I never let him know A&RI was my fav... even though they stopped selling beef, ribs, and the motivation for going there was gone I said let's give it another shot. They kind of fam... I ordered online they said 20 minutes and 20 minutes. I was there waited another 15 minutes then another 10 getting my food in sections other people around me experiencing the same thing look like they wait too long for barbecue only for the orders to be mixed up wrong and cold. My chicken would've been all right if they didn't overcook it, I ordered turkey got beef, but you know I dealt with that the second time I had to call on them last time requesting my money back this time just shaking my head. Their brisket plate is phenomenally well made. I had that with double sides of coleslaw. My companion had the barbecue nachos with pulled pork - also delicious. We ordered desserts to go, and the chocolate cake was delicious. The butter cookies were also amazing. Eating here during lunch becomes really pleasant when they open up the large, adjoining room. I visit this place at least 2x a week, and the food is normally really good. Today 5/14/26 the food from the Hickory Hill location was absolutely terrible!!!! The potato salad has a pound of sugar in it, the tamales are dry, old, and slathered with chili powder. The chicken sandwich would have been ok but the slaw also had a pound of sugar in it as well. This was very disappointing almost $20 for this trash. Whoever made the slaw and potato salad should never be allowed to make it again. Throw the old stale dry tamales away and make fresh ones for your paying customers! read more

Visiting Memphis for Father's Day. My husband and I wanted the type of BBQ that Memphis is known for. We Googled to find the "best" BBQ in the city. This place was listed on several site. My husband called several other BBQ places looking for brunt ends. Very few places offered them or they were sold out. I wanted rib tips and they were definitely on the menu, but no ends were listed. Once we arrived, we asked if they had brunt ends and couldn't believe her response. They were the best brunt ends my husband has had from a restaurant! My rib tip sandwich was amazing! We ordered 1/2 slab of ribs to share (fall off the bone). Both of us requested the mild sauce and it's to die for! I was mad that I didn't get an extra side. The potato salad was so darn good! And to top it off, we had dessert (caramel cake and lemon cake). I can't express how perfect this cake was! Can't wait to visit Memphis again.... read more

arrived about 6:45 on a weeknight and they were out of ribs (they had 1/2 rack and we wanted 3 - we took the 1/2 for a person at home). This was hugely disappointing so we tried a pork shoulder plate, and two rib tip plates. All were voted good, not great. We'll have to reserve final judgement till we return for the ribs. I got the Tricee special. (Pronounced treesee) It was very good. They were what I call baby wings. Very small but tasty. Fries were average but the mild bbq sauce was delightful. I would order this again. read more

A&R use to be the place to go for a very good hamburger and maybe the best hamburger in the city but I hadn't been there since the store changed management until yesterday. I ordered 2 hamburgers and a 16oz barbecue beans. The hamburgers are still some of the best in the city except the size has shrunk so much that it's half the size of the brioche bun so you're eating more bread than burger and that little burger costs 8.25! The barbecue beans are still good but they use to be excellent because they use to add bits of meat in the beans and it costs 5.99 for 16ozs! I wanted to try the cakes but they did not look like they were homemade or fresh! The service was good and the cashier was cheerful and very professional! read more

This is some of the best food in the city hands down. The lady answering the phones on 2.10.24 at 12:50pm is one of the rudest ever, she put me on hold for over 5 mins then when I called back and asked her a question and told her to update the menu if they no longer serve turkey ribs she grunted and hung up in my face. I ordered the Family Pack. Got home and there were only three buns in the bag when there should have been four. I would have let it ride, but one of the three had previously been used. It had scraped off meat and sauce on one side and the other bun had scraped off slaw. That's a damn shame. Just goes to show the cleanliness factor. Safe to say I won't go there again. They refunded my money and apologized but the damage was done. How does a previous used bun end up in a bag instead of the garbage. Thanks A&R. One of the best BBQ spots in Memphis. The smoked wings are really good, well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The rib tips were tender and tasteful. I normally dont eat okra but it was hot, fresh and very good (not slimy on the inside). read more

I have been going to A and R for more than 20 years. So, it pains me to see what the Hickory Hill location is doing to its legacy. I went there today 2/27/25 the front counter staff was friendly enough but the person in the back was yelling as they gave him the orders and being rude and almost aggressively telling them that he was not doing certain request. When I got my order, the meat was greasy, and the flavor was not there. They tasted like a bad copycat of A&R. I have been to this location numerous times I appreciate it is cleaner than past visits, but the staff need to be retrained and need to understand when they send bad food out, or yell from the kitchen about what "they were not gonna do" that they are ruining a family's reputation. read more

First time in Memphis and we looked up the best bbq places and this spot populated and so grateful it did!! We got a bbq rib plate with baked beans and potato salad with hot bbq sauce on the side and then we also got a pork shoulder sandwich with fries (with cole slaw on the sandwich) and it was so delicious!! The sauce was perfect and the meat in the ribs practically fell off the bone! The sandwich was equally amazing!! The meat was tender and juicy!!! There is also a bar attached so that was a bonus and the employees were fabulous!! Very nice and gave us great insight on what's good here!! A++ for this place!! I ordered the rib tip plate with bbq spaghetti, potatoe salad and strawberry cake. . My husband ordered the ribs, fried okra with caramel cake. Both of our ribs were too tough to eat. My bbq spaghetti was ok. Potatoe salad and coleslaw was good. The strawberry cake was delicious. The Caramel Cake was ok. My husband was not a fan of the icing. It wasn't sweet had a strange taste. The fried okra was seasoned and delicious. We probably wont return unless for the strawberry cake or sides. The place needs some TLC, its outdated in need of upgrades and cleaning. Wow! Awesome BBQ. I tried something unexpected on their menu. I could have chosen the regular BBQ cuts and sandwiches but, instead, I ordered two dishes: tamales and BBQ Nachos. I loved the Nachos but, the tamales were a miss. The mild BBQ on the corn chips were great and the chicken to top. I was asked to try the tamales because everyone was raving about them. I found them to be ordinary and uninspired. The tamale masa was minimal and wrapped in wax paper. Authentic, on the other hand are wrapped in a corn leaf and the masa is 85%of the meal . I tried the bbq wings. They are excellent. Tried some old school cookies. Someone missed the mark with the hot tomilies. They are not made in house. But are shipped in. I would not try to pay off the farm with those. The pulled pork sandwiches are excellent. Mask are a must at this location. I dont see social distancing because the place is tiny. But lines are clean & the customers are polite. Everyone has gloves and they own hand sanitizer. I give 5 stars. read more

Really good BBQ. I had the turkey sandwich on a bun with coleslaw and fried okra. was all so tasty. At first I was a little nervous because they put the sauce on my sandwich, I usually prefer to dip. However, the sauce was really really good! The location is a little different than what I would have expected because it was in a strip mall, but of course these types of restaurants are usually the best hidden gems! I had a horrific experience!!!!!! Placed an order online on July 3rd for July 4th expecting to walk in and out with my order and to my surprise they did not have an order for me. I arrived at 11a and left at 11:45a. Asked for my money back, however, was told "hold on mam", as if the order would be right up. Mind you this in the midst of Covid-19, kept asking where my order was no response, place is getting more crowded by the minute . No social distancing at all. I called in an order for 6 Hot Tamales and a Cheese burger on 11/4/2023. The Tamales were burnt, sour and spoiled. I took a bite of one and my husband took a bite of another one they were the worst we have ever !! eaten. This has happen to me once before. I will not let it happen a 3rd time, who ever they order the Tamales from they need to stop. I will check my order before I leave A&R on Hickory Hill next time. I feel a should get a full refund. Not only that my order was 24.56 but when I checked my credit card statement I was charged 29.00 for my order so that means they added they're own tip without my knowledge. I order a Jumbo BBQ plate the BBQ was all fat no meat, the bread was old and hard, and the bean just didn't taste right. The potato salad was the only thing on the entire plate that was good.
