Does this look like a "home made hoagie roll"?
    Fred P.

Looked for a spot to stop so my girlfriend could take care of some phone calls / internet time while on vacation. A typical downpour started as we pulled into Bangor so I stopped at the first coffee place. At first I was just going to have a coffee and her a 'choco-cinno'. I opted instead for a Thai Bubble tea, then I saw that the special of the day was a lobster roll on a home made hoagie. Out comes the Hersheys' syrup for her 'specialty coffee'.. Hmmm....I should have told her what it was. She probably would have sent it back. Then my Lobster salad came on a plain white store bought hotdog bun. I left the bread on the plate and just ate the stuffing. The bubble tea? Maybe fun for kids, but take a pass on it. Oh well, we had a place out of the rain to take care of business anyway.

Excellent ice coffee. Good price. Nice people.

The chairs are all different, the tables are all kitchen tables covered with plastic table cloths. Now, let us discuss the food. The Reuben sandwich was delicious and well cooked. The meatball parm sandwich was amazing with a tomato sauce that made my companion, a Sicilian from New York, swear it was the best sauce she had eaten since she left NY so many years ago. That is a stellar review in itself. I will order the pizza next time--it should be fantastic. I plan on going back next week.

Two things are extra special - the real Old World expresso machine, and Moo Moo the dog. Both are things of beauty and must be seen and experienced face-to-face. Ask John about the beans he uses as he meticulously prepares your coffee (I had a terrific double-shot Americano), and also ask if Corinne wouldn't mind having you meet Moo Moo herself! Highly recommended - it's not far off the highway, with easy access to and from I-95. Service is exceptional, and the staff were happy to accommodate our needs. My wife and I were traveling from Rhode Island with our two Jack Russell terriers; they were intensely interested in Moo Moo in their typical berserker Jack Russell way. They got some special attention too. :)

Once again, Yelpers, you helped me out in finding a great hoagie (ahem, sub) place. We got some…read moresubs for lunch while sitting in bliss at Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park again this week. The owner, Diane, thought she recognized us, but I told her she was mistaken. She then told us the short story of taking over the establishment which used to be next door run by a gentleman for upwards of 60 years. She kept his menu and added to it. Their subs are slightly different in that the meat is on top, and the fillers in the rolls. The wife picked out the #7 - Tourney Time Turkey which has veggies, American cheese, Turkey Chunks, Pepper (Green), and Pickles. I chose the #6 - Blu Ox Roast Beef which has the same toppings but also with Horseradish or Bleu Cheese. All the sandwiches I believe also have raw onions. However, since they are made to order, they can customize your sandwich to your liking. Diane also recommended some homemade macaroni salad or possibly the soup of the day, which today she called "Thanksgiving Leftovers." She said she just made it this morning, and had lots of turkey, potato, and other stuff (but not real leftovers!) We both went with that "soup." She also suggested the homemade croutons instead of crackers to go with it, and we also chose them. She threw in a baggies full of the croutons, and we were quickly on our way. We thankfully avoided the seagulls in Schoodic, and had the soup in the car as it was slightly raining. OMG, this was really a Thanksgiving Gumbo with a lot of flavor and pep. The homemade croutons threw it over the top. I could have just had a few more servings of this instead of the sub. After a couple hours overwatching the Schoodic version of Thunder Hole, we had our subs. My wife and I were a little surprised at the foot long rolls they came on as they had the consistency of being like a hot dog roll instead of what we're used to. The turkey chunks were plentiful and tasty. They are also made daily as they cook whole chickens and turkey breast to cut up for their foods. I could have used more meat and fillers on mine, but it was still quite good. And the seagulls got zip. So 5+ stars for the Thanksgiving Leftover Soup (Gumbo), and 4 for the subs. I'm rounding up due to the very friendly service and I always like to support local businesses when possible. I think there's a bazillion Subways in Maine, but only one The Legacy Sandwich. I'm going with The Legacy Sandwich. $30 for the two subs and two soups. Well worth it.

Today was my last shift at T&R after about three years of getting to work with the wonderful folks…read morethere. When I shop, it is so important to me to shop at places that treat their employees well, that are community oriented, and that aren't just another corporate-hell extracting labor and resource from small communities. I thought I'd offer up a little bit of the experience working there for others that are intentional with how they direct their resources: I am not new to the work force but am new to experiencing actual care, support, and trust consistently from a work space. - Certainly new to the comradery of a woman owned, small business, über-focused on a culture of mentorship, collaboration, growth, and providing excellent service and product to the surrounding community. They are truly committed to building long term rapport with return customers and create a cozy, friendly, specialty experience. Things that really stick out as well; each month there is a, 'round-up,' for area organizations, there exists a genuine effort and space for supporting local vendors, there is a general tone of support and excitement/interest for staff (be it hardships or accomplishments/joys). Many of the folks there are entering into the work force for the first time and when it is time to move on, respectively, there is a real sense of supporting their lift-off and keeping the door open for them to have a place to return to. It is inter-generational at T&R and that, in my view, is what ideally a community should be - of course it's a job, and imperfect, and there were little social conflicts here and there during my time, but what few things bubbled up were handled with such kindness, empathy, spaciousness, communication. It was impressive to me that solutions and conversations could take place with respect and calm - having had so many past experiences loaded with tension and just lack of communication at other work places. As a late thirty something human, I learned SO much working there and will always admire and adore the people. I admire the owners and managers terribly deeply, and appreciate how important that space was/is. Yes, it's a business, but TIller& Rye is doing something really special and I could not endorse it more vehemently. Also - I'm queer - the first day I started, the owner (in our little touch base) used my pronouns - something that my previous job of three years did so few times I can count on my fingers). The folks at T&R are imperfect humans like the rest of us - but unlike so so many places I have worked, they are open-hearted, incredibly considerate/smart, practicing connection and community in a way I just have not seen. I hope so much that I find anything close to that moving forward. It may be weird to mention any whiff of imperfection - but I do because it's a place that felt like I could also be my whole, weird, imperfect, odd duck self and that would be okay. Being there reminded by showing me that we're whole, complex, goofy, awkward, flailing, succeeding, trying...and that's life. TLDR: Work there. Eat there. T&R is spot worth your money and worth your time. My heart is full of gratitude as I move onto my next chapter. Cannot thank y'all enough.

Service is friendly, store layout and presentation are well thought out, prices are a bit high but they are understandable considering they have some unique and healthy offerings.
