Well, this is tricky. A New Yorker rating a Maine bagel? Well I ordered my usual scallion cream cheese on an onion bagel. Overpriced, small bagels. They seem to be the only actual shop around though, do with that what you will. Neither bagel was toasted upon request. I had to pester the employees for a bag for two bagels. I was handed them on two plates wrapped in tin foil and I also had a coffee, it was supposed to be to go. The coffee roast tasted ok. I make the two hour trip to Bangor at least three times a year to stock up on these amazing bagels. I usually get 6+ dozen because they freeze really well. My family gets very excited when I come home with my haul! This place almost always has a line, but don't let that deter you. The staff is fabulous and moves people along rather quickly. This place makes their own bagel and cream cheese, they also have baked goods. The bagels and cream cheese are fantastic. It can be hit or miss with some of the baked goods. The cookies n napoleons are awesome but the fruit tart was not great because the shortbread was very thick. I had the breakfast sandwich and I added tomatoes n spinach and it was delicious. My husband had the chorizo omelette and that was a little disappointing. The place is cafeteria style. It only has 1 bathroom and could use some repairs as the floor was being held together with duck tape in many places. Definitely stick to their bagels and some of their baked items here. So, solid breakfast in a town without a lot of solid breakie spots. All of the staff is friendly so they score on service as well. Ambiance? Not so much. This place is LOUD! It's popular, crowded, and just not a spot you want to go during peak times if you want to actually converse with someone. We decided to order our food to go. It took us 30 minutes to wait in line to order and then wait in a different line to get the food. This would normally pull my score down to 3 stars, but my BLT with avocado was so yummy! We are from the NY/NJ/PA area and think we know what a good bagel is. We were pleased with what we got. I ordered a salt bagel and I am a self proclaimed salt bagel officianado. Most bagelries will have too much salt on the bagel. In my opinion, there only needs to be a light sprinkling of salt that is baked in. Bagel Central delivered! I was super happy with the sandwich which included a light spread of veggie cream cheese. My husband's breakfast burrito was good but would have been better if he had eaten it right away. We brought it back to our hotel room and then worked out. Unfortunately, our room did not have a microwave to heat it up. Highly recommend ordering from here. read more

Ordered from the specials menu posted on the chalkboard behind the counter ~ Lox Bagelwich, the written description of which included cream cheese, eggs and lox on a bagel. Sounded great. Cashier asked if I would like to add anything to it. Already sounded like a pretty full and delicious sandwich so I asked what other people tend to add to it, largely asking out of curiosity. She said cream cheese. I told her that cream cheese was part of the description and comes with it. She said that cream cheese is actually an up charge. Somebody else came over to the cash register and iterated and reiterated that cream cheese was an up charge. I pointed to the chalkboard where it plainly states in part of the description of the bagel sandwich that it comes with cream cheese. There was a lot of back-and-forth chatter between them behind the cash register, and since I was not the one paying, I never got to see the receipt as to whether or not they did charge for the cream cheese. Nevertheless, pretty unsavory of them, to say the least, to try to charge for an item that was already listed as an ingredient in the sandwich. The inconsistency is allowable as a mistake, however, admit it, own it and it needs to be corrected. Either they erase cream cheese as one of the ingredients listed as an integral part of the sandwich, or stop trying to charge customers for the cream cheese; but, you can't have it both ways and still be ethical. That's like listing pepperoni pizza as a special and then describing the ingredients in the pizza, including pepperoni and then having the cashier ask if you wanted to add anything to it like pepperoni, which would be an up charge if they continued with today's line of thinking ~ does not make sense. Sandwich itself was delicious, and I did get it with cream cheese, whether or not they charged the friend who kindly picked up the tab, I'll never know. read more
