I went to this restaurant for happy hour and ordered the fish and chips on the happy hour menu. The chips and even the fish were very oily. I mentioned it to the bartender Hillary who replied " it's fried food." She didn't even offer to have another order made. If you want properly cooked non greasy fried fish and chips go to the Courthouse Bar and Grill.

We love a night out 85 Main. We usually see Hillary working, she is always attentive, personable, and makes awesome drinks ! She's the best! All the staff are super friendly, always acknowledge us and say hello! My favorite drink is the Pear-tini . Abel is the best and always makes us a Pink Zebra roll to start. Fish and Chips with sweet potato fries is my hubby's favorite. The best fish and chips in the area in my opinion. Light and fluffy. I'm always stealing a bite .. I love the steak tips with wild mushrooms. The mushroom ravioli and the Bolognese with gnocchi is also a couple of our favorites ! You won't be disappointed here !

85 Main is always my go to when I'm in the Putnam area ! The food is always delicious and fresh ! Even when they are busy the staff are friendly and welcoming. If you are looking for a chill vibe this is the place to be. Also our favorite bartender Hillary makes the best cocktails!

The service was decent, the waitress friendly, but the food was far below par for what you paid. The $55 ribeye came out well done (we asked for Medium Rare), which is just crazy. And then the 8-piece Shrimp sushi had only 2 pieces with Shrimp on it? That doesn't make sense. The steamers were okay, but a little tasteless. The cocktails were good!

We stopped in for lunch after antiquing and ordered 4 different things off the menu. The fish and chips seemed to be the favorite and the side of sweet potato fries were a good addition. The burger was average and the wings were okay. I wasn't a fan of the blue cheese on the side, which is weird because I usually love it. It tasted like salad dressing from a bottle. The food took awhile to come but the server was nice. I think I may try something else next time I'm in the area for the price. Most dishes for lunch were $18-$20.

My 1st time stopping here, was on a road trip and found this nice part of town . We decided to sit outside but the tables were so rickety we couldn't put our drinks on them and I got frustrated and moved inside to the bar area. I ordered some raw clams and a Kobe beef sushi roll . My girlfriend ordered a hamburger. The guy there that makes the sushi is good, and quick , problem is the sushi just sits there for 15 to 20 minutes before the waitress pick it up . I watched my ( warm ) Kobe beef sit there for at least 15 minutes along with 6 other orders , with little bugs flying around . I found that to be a little disturbing, one the burger came out they just reached over and grabbed my now cold $20 Kobe sushi roll . There was sushi still sitting there when I finished that was there when I sat down . The oysters were good . Well shucked , I wanted some big ones , they were on the small size . My sushi roll was very uneventful. I was too hungry to send it back . I had a bite of the burger and it was the highlight of the $90 meal .

85 main never fails to make every visit a special experience! When my parents came to visit this month, it was the first stop we made, as I'm always bragging about it to them! We started our meal with the cheese plate and oysters (they have a huge selection of oysters!) Our server, Hilary, explained all the menu items my parents were interested in and anticipated our needs before we even thought to ask! Our dinners came out perfectly timed after we had finished our starters; my mom had the salmon steak, a delicious, thick piece of salmon (check out their socials to see videos of it being prepared!) and my dad had the fish and chips, his favorite dish! The portion was massive, which my dad was thrilled about because he has quite the appetite and had been waiting to order this. Perfectly cooked, and he even ordered a second one to go and had it for lunch the next day . I had the bolognese, because, well, it's 85 main's bolognese. If you haven't tried it, check the specials menu on their website and get there early when they have it! It goes fast! Thanks Hilary and everyone at 85 main for making my parents' visit a wonderful memory for us!

Always love the food. It is a bit pricey but I would still recommend. The fresh bread and oil is yummy. The service is usually great even on busy days. The atmosphere is cool especially on the bar side with the stars on the ceiling on or in the cellar with the wine if you wanted a more private space.

I'm so happy I finally tried this place! In a local and every time I drive by this place it's packed! This was my first time and it was excellent. The waiter was very nice, the food was sooo flavorful and didn't take too long to come out and the atmosphere was nice! I will definitely be back!!

Carrot Coconut Bisque with the watery Clam Chowder in the background.

After reading other reviews here and on other sites along with recommendations for people we came in contact with on our recent trip, we were quite disappointed. The hostess quickly sat us at a table in the walkway with my husbands chair being constantly run into by the same server. She wasn't friendly, and our server was the same. It was a crisp fall day and soup for lunch sounded perfect. Mr. B went with the clam chowder and I opted for their special of the day, carrot coconut bisque. The clam chowder was watery, lacked flavor and salt, but was filled with pieces of sand. My carrot coconut bisque was unique and I actually loved it. Given the opportunity, there are other spots around Putnam that are better and I wouldn't go back to 85 Main.

The stir-fried noodles were good too; a little dry for me; it could've used more gravy. But the beef sticks were the bomb! The very kind cook, Massey, said she could make anything on the menu gluten-free. (I think there might have been an exception of Korean dishes that were marinated.) We shared an excellent chicken noodle soup; it had thin rice noodles and a very clean, clear broth, not oily. I'm accustomed to Vietnamese broths that have a lot more aromatics, but the simplicity of this was wonderful. The fried chicken was cut in small, bone-in pieces, with a mild flavor and served with papaya salad. Massey is a character and she knows how to cook.

Since we were dining at an off time, there was only one other patron in view. They have an expansive Asian menu and we ordered: Salmon Dinner - 5pcs of salmon sushi & spicy salmon roll (with salad) Asian Fried Rice with Chicken Scallion Pancake Gyoza -Japanese pan fried pork dumpling 2 Green Tea Total with Tip: $78 How expansive is the menu? If you search for Salmon on their online menu, you get 47 hits! Service was good, then again we were essentially on our own. The Salmon was good, not the best I've ever had, but tasty. The Fried Rice was also tasty, but very salty. The Scallion Pancakes were crispy and nicely cooked, we really liked these. And the Gyoza was very tasty, but should have been crisper. Overall, a very enjoyable "Linner" and a 4-star dining experience. I would return here if in the area.

I had the Khao Soi, a northern Thai curry noodle soup , served with thin strips of white meat chicken. Excellent. Plentiful amount of chicken, good ratio of broth to noodles, just the right serving portion. My wife had the drunken noodles, which she enjoyed but I think the noodles were a tiny bit overdone and it lacked a bit of heat that is usually in drunken noodles, but that's a small complaint. I'm soldering if they might have extra chilis , prik nam pla or some other hot sauce to add if we had requested it? We sat on the outside deck, very pleasant and service was attentive and prompt. BYOB if you want an alcoholic addition to the water and other non-alcoholic beverage options available. This is not a biased review , I'm a tough grader and call it like I see it. It's not the best pan-Asian food I've ever had but it's a solid 4 out of 5 overall and for the price, in downtown Newport, this is a very good option.

It didn't have very much in it as far as clams and potatoes but it was delicious. Not your typical NE chowder but good all the same. The little crackers they serve with it are good too. The onion soup on the other hand was just too much. The onions on top get soaked into the soup and it just becomes a bowl of mush. Not appetizing at all. For apps we got the quahogs and fries. The quahogs although tasty were tiny. Clam size. I'm not sure if it's because it's off season or what but I've never had one so small and at $6 per you'd think you'd get a little more. The fries came to the table and we asked if they were always so dark...they were burnt and hard and the waitress said "sometimes they are darker sometimes lighter" well friend these are charcoal. She got us a new order which came out quickly and they were cooked correctly. They had Parmesan and garlic and still felt like they lacked flavor. We added salt it helped a bit but the shining star was the homemade ketchup. It was delicious. We finished our meal with the carrot cake. The photos do it no justice. It is huge and so amazing. Best we've ever had. I was told it's made in house I'm not sure if that's true or not. Overall a big disappointment. I don't think the best thing you've eaten at a place should be dessert or condiment but that's the case. I would say go for the cake and cocktails.
