We've been sleeping on Thai Basil. When we walked in we were greeted with a smile. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. We had crab rangoons and a black dragon sushi roll to start and they were incredible. Probably one of the best rolls ive ever had. For a main I ordered hibachi chicken and garlic noodles, and general Thai chicken. Sad to report our apps were the showstopper. The mains were just - good. First time here, first of many more visits. Chicken Satay is the best I've ever had and I've had it at one other place. Crab Rangoons were crispy and stuffed. The duck sauce was sweet and honey like. For the entree I had the Chicken Pad Thai, chicken was perfectly cooked and the noodles were melt in your mouth delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive. If I could give zero stars I would. Just ordered takeout and to start things off, whoever packaged my order did not secure the lid. Went to Thai basil alone and came home with a passenger of splattered chicken hibachi. Thai Basil burnt down in Killingly some years ago and I'm certain it was a struggle for them to return. They held a reputation in the area for great food and an inviting atmosphere that just felt like home cooking. Thai Basil in Woodstock right now just isn't it. If the owners end up reading this, please understand that I WANT this to end up being a positive review, but right now it isn't and that's okay, not mad, just disappointed. We didn't just try it. We have been there multiple times and it's always great. Have never had an entree or a sushi item. Appetizers are excellent like the spring roll and crab Rangoon. Unique menu with plenty of options but not too many that the quality is compromised. We just went on a Wednesday night and just Friday or Saturday... great food and service. I've always gotten the same thing bc it's so good--the crab Rangoon, and delight for two. Crab Rangoon have lots of filling and are so fresh! We went to the Thai Basil thinking it was indeed where the food would be like its name sake - Thai! This seemingly is a Chinese operated place and in order to differentiate, calls itself a Thai restaurant so you would not think it is Chinese, but it is. If you looking for Thai go to the other 'real' Thai place in town - this was about as far from Chinese as silk is from polyester! We ordered the standard Thai basil eggplant with Chicken which is usually a really fine dish with coconut milk and Thai chilis. This dish had three eggplant tempura pieces which had no flavor and here comes the best part - the sauce was made with soy! I do not know a Thai restaurant which uses soy sauce! isn't that Chinese? Oddly the place was full - says something though about why. There aren't many restaurants in town that would serve reasonably good food or that they cannot tell the difference between Thai and Chinese ;-). Perhaps this place could be good, but they ought not to fool their custom calling it something it certainly isn't - Thai! If you want to call it Thai dump the soy sauce! read more

Been here twice and usually is busy. First time we got a plate of crab Rangoon and the pad Thai drunken noodles. The crab rangoons were delicious with a nice crunch to them and filled well. The drunken noodles were amazing. Tried the dish for the first time and I would order again. This time we ordered take out sushi, the order was ready when I got there and waited in line a bit to pick up due to it being a busy night. Can't say I was a big fan of the spider or exotic roll since I prefer raw sushi but I was sharing this! Their salmon was fresh and not fishy at all. Been here a handful of times over the past 3-4 years both to get takeout and dine in. Food is above average for a Thai joint overall and better than any in my general area about 20 minutes away. Please check takeout orders before driving home as two out of my last 3 orders were not properly fulfilled. Tonight's order was missing 2 different items I submitted via the online ordering platform. Called to express my displeasure and was told by the owner "nobody's perfect". My credit card was promptly refunded as requested however just disappointed overall as I had children who were excited to eat these items that were not received. After giving it several chances, I regret to report that the food here is just bad. Starting with the best news: tom kha soup is not terrible. It is too sweet and an order has literally two shrimps, but it is by FAR the best thing out of dozens of dishes i've tried. All of the food is too sweet. Sauces typically haven't "come together" so everything is too liquidy. Drunken noodles and other noodle dishes come with one or two small pieces of meat. The "noodles" in the drunken noodles arrive in a giant glob that has not been penetrated by any sauce. Joke is on me for ordering this multiple times because it happens every time. The sushi is really depressing and totally flavorless-- worse than grocery store sushi. You are better off with 85 main sushi and that's not great either. The bar around here is really low. Chicken satay is rubbery but at least you can get some protein that way. If you want needlessly sweet but also flavorless and watery food, gummy noodles, and barely any protein, look no further. It's sad because I LOVE thai food and I wish this was better. read more

Thai Basil is a small quaint restaurant in a very nice location. The hostess greeted us and, sat us outside as we desired. Promptly waited on for our drink order, and shortly for our food order. If you like Sushi, this place is amazing. The Chef is very talented and did a wonderful job on both of our meals. We had Luncheon specials. I commend the entire staff and owner for keeping the establishment open 7 days a week. The rest rooms are average but very clean. We will be back soon. Thank you for the wonderful meal! read more

The very good: late hours, open seven days a week, nice clean place, very, very friendly staff, food pretty good and consistent - honestly, the staff are SO nice. The so-so: the sushi (at a Thai place) falls apart, at least as made by one man, and wasn't quite as one would hope texture-wise - (85 Main in Putnam does a very good job with sushi), the beef in two dishes I had was too tough. Staff don't know much about Thai/Asian cuisine. It would be nice if they were taught or took an interest and learned more. One dish that's supposed to have peanuts had none - maybe they're pureed so finely that there's zero texture of them, but I'm referring to a dish where normally you would find a lot of peanuts in the sauce and it's mentioned on the menu too - that happened twice on visits about a month apart. Thai food can be loaded with peanuts depending on the dish. Other: some things need attention - the door off the bar to the patio clacks VERY loudly every time it falls shut and has been that way for at least a year. I held my hand back behind me to catch the door after every server walked through to stop the clatter on one visit. It's unpleasant if you're seated anywhere near there. The front door flings open and crashes into something, and there's a hole in part of a door handle/lock on another door. A bit of handyman TLC is needed. Main dining room is too cold, although the great staff are running around a lot, so I suspect they prefer that, but it's just too cold. Not all tables are lighted well - some are great while others are just too dim with no lights nearby. These things sound so minor, but given other issues, it can add up when you're very cold, at a dim table, eating chewy sushi and tough meat. Minor tweaks could take this place good to fabulous. read more

Gave Thai Basil a go at the new Woodstock location. Found it to be just meh at the old location in Danielson but went a couple of times. Still as subpar as ever unfortunately. Veg Nim Chow - literally iceberg and a stray carrot string. No basil. Super disappointed. Chicken Fried Rice- bland and I found a scallion root in it. All the chopped vegetables in every dish looked like my ten year old cut them while having a tantrum. Chicken Mee Pad - wicked bland... even asked for it spicy. Glob of sauce near the center of the container but otherwise barely mixed. Tuna Rolls- probably the most questionable sushi I've eaten in a while. Still fed it to the kids, will update if we all get food poisoning. Massaman Curry - regretted getting shrimp after trying the sushi. Once again bland... asked for spicy. Runny sauce. Will update if I'm sick later... One highlight were the Spicy Thai wings. Sticky, sweet and hot. I do wonder how long they've been living in the sauce but I'm not mad about it. Overall it seems like most ingredients are pre cut and pre cooked by someone miserable who then passive aggressively tosses it all in some sauce (if your lucky) and rage packs it in a container. I came here tonight 2/4/23 and I couldn't wait to go home and write a review. We had a large party reservation at 5:30pm and as soon as we sat down , 30 seconds later a women came up to our party and said we only had 1.5 hours to eat. As someone who has worked in a restaurant industry for over 20 years I would never say that to my customers. We made reservation one week ago for a birthday and for them to say that to us as soon as we walked in was very disappointing. Service was not great. Third time customer first time reviewer. First experience was dine in, we got sushi, miso soup and salad. All the rolls were great, the miso soup was average and the salad was simple with heaps of yummy ginger dressing. Service was fantastic. It was later in the evening and they didn't have many customers the staff was super attentive and the food came out quickly. Second experience was take out: I got pad see ew beef, spicy tuna roll and pan fried dumplings. The pad see ew I did not like, it had bell peppers in it which confused me and it had a sweeter flavor than I prefer. But the sushi and dumplings were great. Third experience was all sushi again this time takeout. Got 6 rolls: Black dragon roll, Spicy tuna combo roll, Spider roll, Mango tuna roll, Out of control roll , and the Rainbow roll. I was not expecting the gorgeous platter I received upon pick up! 11/10 on presentation. 4 of the 6 rolls were outstanding. The Black Dragon roll must have been made first since it was in the center of the platter but by the time we got home to eat it the eel was dry and my husband didn't finish it. He said the spider roll was really good and the tuna roll combo was as good as ever. I had the mango tuna roll which I thought I'd like but I kinda wished I'd just had some of the regular spicy tuna roll. The rainbow and out of control rolls were very very good and fresh. We thought it was funny that it came with one small side salad for $80 worth of sushi (we weren't expecting it and it was a nice thoughtful addition but thought proportionately to how much sushi we got if you're going to give a side salad maybe 2 would have been nice so we could each have some lol) Anyways over all we are fans, we'll continue to order from here for dine in and takeout and we'll learn the menu as we go read more

This was our first time trying Thai Basil but I can't say we could ever be convinced to return. I should mention that I'm a baker by profession and my boyfriend is a chef, so our expectations are always high. The outside is very cute, we absolutely loved their quirky sign looking for a dishwasher, the booths and tables looked nice but our booth had been repaired with black duct tape... not a good look. We were seated immediately and our waitress was with us in just a minute or two and was friendly. Their drink special menu was dirty and in a plastic cover made for a ring binder, hole punched and all. Again, just not classy, super cheap. Appetizers were veggie tempura and crab rangoons- rangoons were SO sweet and the dumpling wrap was so big compared to the amount of filling. The veggie tempura was in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some pieces could be eaten in two bites and others were giant and easily 5-6 bites. The bell pepper was just an entire end of a pepper and the piece we had of sweet potato was not only enormous but dry. No salt or seasoning for any of the pieces! So bland. Our Thai iced coffee and tea were truly horrific. Like if you put sugar on ice cream, that's how sweet they were. My veggie pad Thai was sweet, and not in a good way, and again the veggies were so many different sizes it just didn't look professional. The fried rice wasn't bad, it had a tiny little kick to it that I liked but the eggs in it looked like they were cooked as an omelette and then sort of shredded. Huge pieces, and totally overcooked. Lastly, my boyfriends chicken drunken noodles- the sauce was creamy like a vodka sauce which was odd but the flavor wasn't bad. A lot of chicken which was nice, again, in giant pieces.
