Great local bar, not a place we go often though. The music is typically too loud, but works for the atmosphere I guess. Food is hit or miss. I had a really amazing burger one week, and a mediocre one a few weeks later. Beer selection is usually decent but not anything to get excited about. They also have a wide variety of meat lover options- your typical bar food but made with better ingredients and served up in huge portions. Worst bar food ever. Their cocktails are laughable; stick to the beer menu. Not really sure why they bother taking temps on the burgers when everything comes out well done. The worse experience ever here! I have come to this bar multiple times, but tonight was just unbelievable. The waitress took our order for drinks and water and took her 25 minutes to get that to us. Walked past our table countless of times and didn't bother to take our order, but instead took orders from 2 tables who walked in 30 mins after us. I'm actually surprised by the low reviews for 551 West. I headed there on a Saturday night and had an absolute blast! A group of us headed to 551 West after a local roller derby bout (those girls are crazy!). We sat up at the bar and were served immediately by one of the bar tenders. This place has so many delicious beers available - including the Dogfish Head Punkin in freaking April! I decided on the Lil Gruesome, which is a raspberry peanut butter porter - so good! Okay, so I'm sold alone on the beer selection. For apps/dinner, we ordered the fried pickles (surprisingly good and not salty), the spicy crab dip (good, but not spicy), and an order of jerk wings and 551 rub wings. I want to take just a second to talk about how delicious the wings are here - both types that we ordered were dry rubs and they were awesome. The wings are cooked perfectly, aren't too greasy, and are very flavorful. I'm estimating there are 15 different kinds of wings on the menu and I would make the trip back to try more flavors. Aside from the good beer and good food, Blue Light Special was there performing that night. They were awesome - a cool, blues band. I really enjoyed their music and people were cutting up the dance floor. Went here for lunch today and had horrible service. We waited 20 minutes after our order was taken and the waiter came back to tell us our order didn't make it from the computer to the kitchen. We waited another 20 minutes for the food to come. There were two of us and we were the only ones in the dining room I had to pay extra for a small salad because my AHI Tuna only came with French Fries. The Tuna was on a roll and smothered with what tasted like BBQ sauce. UGH. This small lunch with iced tea cost $20. I gave the waiter a credit card and he said it was declined. Tried with another card with the same result. There were no outstanding balances on either card and it turns out that the waiter didn't know how to operate the credit card reader. Ate half the tasty (and, as advertised, steak sandwich not "Philly Cheesesteak") and then had to run back to laundromat. My two sisters, mom, and I decided to try out this new resturant. First impression was that it was very clean and the decor was new. The staff was also very friendly and we were seated quickly in the dining area. We ordered the fried pickle appetizer and that was so delicious, however, all of our "main course" orders were messed up terribly. I ordered a french dip sandwich, and the waitress brought out a cheeseburger... My sister ordered a cheese burger with No onions, and the burger that was brought out only had onions on it... My other sister ordered a crispy chicken wrap, and it came out with a lot of hot sauce on it... And my mom ordered crab cakes, which were still raw in the middle. We are currently staying in Lancaster on vacation and have to eat out every night. After reading the reviews we were a bit skeptical but we bought a Double Take Deals so thought we'd give it a shot! We are very glad we did! It was so good we went back a couple of weeks later. We got an appetizer to begin with to help us reach the $30 Deal. The Sweet Potato Fries were delicious. They tasted very fresh and the honey and brown sugar was great. The first time we went I got Blackened Fish Tacos and the were amazing. The queso sauce goes perfectly with the fish. It was so good I got it the second time also, and it was just as good as the first time! My boyfriend got the Jalapeno burger the first time and he didn't have anything bad to say. The second time he got the Jambalaya over rice and it was awesome! They also have a very good beer selection (and you can even buy 6-packs). The staff was very friendly. My wife and I have visited 551 West many times as we live close by - I usually order their Cubano and they have the best Cuban sandwich in Lancaster in my opinion! Their fish tacos and steak salad are also excellent. Great selection of tap beers and friendly atmosphere - pretty nice combination for a neighborhood restaurant. I sat down with 2 of my coworkers on my birthday waiting to be attended and it took about 20 mins for the server to finally come and say the bar can take your order but has the nerve to be rude when I tipped a good amount for something she didn't do. I still tipped 30$ and she was mad about it when it wasn't her tip. Its definitely the worst bar to go to with expensive taste and bad service doesn't mix well. Came back for Restaurant Week, the place was totally packed on a Wednesday evening so I'm happy they're doing well. The service was VERY slow but there was only 1 guy serving 8+ tables at a time and he was really kicking butt. We started with the potato skins which were good, hard to mess up cheese and bacon on potatoes. We both got the steak and the meat was seasoned well and cooked well but the cut was cheap and had a lot of inedible pieces. Bananas foster cheesecake for dessert--delicious. First time we were here. We were greeted very pleasantly when we walked in. Our waitress was very very friendly and professional. She took our drink orders and brought them in a very timely fashion. The owner came out and greeted us and shook hands with us. We had the pleasure of speaking with him for a good 10 minutes if not more. Very friendly man, I wish him the best with his business. Now onto the food. We can't say nothing but good things. I had the Irish chicken. Would you believe that it came with homemade mashed potatoes. Absolutely a delightful pleasure instead of instant potatoes. The chicken was delicious to a T. The sauce on the chicken was so delicious and very flavorful. My sweetheart had the Land and Sea dish. She never finishes her dinner, but we can't say that tonight. She enjoyed it very much. I tasted her dish and was very happy that her dinner was just as delicious as mine. The place has a laid back atmosphere, but very respectful and friendly. 551 could easily pass as a lower edge of fine dining. I received a gift certificate for 551 for Christmas from a colleague. My husband and I went a few days later, on a Thursday night, to have dinner and some drinks. We were greeted very promptly by a super friendly, smiling hostess who strayed from the normal phrase of "How are you doing" and said something more like, "Are you have a good day, today?" It kind of throws you off when someone deviates from the usual programmed greetings/small talk. Our waiter, Joel, also was extremely friendly and attentive. I was impressed with the beer selection; we tried a few winter microbrews and then switched to Yuengling (just to mind the budget!). As we looked over the menu, I immediately noticed something very cool! So clever; I noticed was that its prices are a play on the name of the establishment. The marketing writer in me loves this kind of quirkiness. The second time I went, I didn't tell my friends about it. Instead, I said there's something neat about the menu, but I want you to find it. They did. I'd want you, Yelp reader, to find it too, but I feel the need to mention it here because another reviewer, kyle n., mentioned that the pricing is a gimmick--adding on extra money. This person completely overlooked the cleverness! OK. Onto the food. I love bar food; I'd rather eat at a bar-restaurant than a fancy restaurant that happens to have a bar. The menu at 551 was varied; had a great list of appetizers and lots of burgers and sandwiches, but also regular entrees, too. We were both in the burger mood and I was so interested in this unique burger - the 551 Burger has bacon, cheddar, jalapenos and PEANUT BUTTER. I was sold. I adore peanut butter, but never had it on a burger. I was in for an adventure. It was fantastic! The peanut butter balanced out the heat of the peppers. Hubby started with the chili - and he raved about it. He also got a burger, the classic. The fries were SO delicious. Fresh cut and just the right amount of greasiness to be bursting with flavor, but not drowning in it. This makes me wonder why any restaurant would buy frozen fries!! As we ate, both owners visited our table and asked how we were doing, how our food was, etc. My husband and I are very talkative people, and also pretty new to living in downtown Lancaster, so we ended up having a fantastically long conversation. There was a small connection between the person who bought me the gift certificate and the owner, so we had a bit of an ice breaker. I really felt at home at this place! In fact, after dinner, we headed to the bar and hung out for about another hour. An acoustic solo act started to play around 9 p.m. It was a nice night! A few weeks later, just last week, an old friend was in town to do a poetry reading at Dogstar Books. Two other friends and he wanted to go out after, and me and my husband recommended 551; they had seen my Instagram post of the peanut butter burger, so they were sold! My second visit was later in the evening, so we were able to seat ourselves. The service and food was still good. (I had the black and bleu burger this time.) The only complaint I had was that on the second visit; it was karaoke night -- which we didn't know, but became excited about! My husband sang the only song in the nearly two-hour time period we were there. Since people were not signing up to sing, the DJ obviously had to keep music going, but it was VERY loud dance music, which made a conversation difficult to have. Most karaoke DJs with which I am familiar play sing-a-long type songs while people aren't singing to get them excited to sing or remind them of the classics. I don't think you can have bass-y music and karaoke in the same night; it just seemed to clash (on their own, each are fine). If it was more traditional karaoke, it would have been great. Hope that makes sense. The place is new and they are probably figuring out what entertainment fits best. read more

S*%@ happens and they tried to make it right and at that point they had only been open a few weeks and things do go wrong sometimes. Are you perfect? This place is great, because the owners are great! They have always been nothing short of accomidating. So far all of the food we've had we have really enjoyed...the apps, burgers, desserts...great. Just this evening, I asked for the house salad, add chicken, tomatos, cheese and for it to be put in the fish taco tortilla...I basically created my own salad, they did it without hesitation...he actually came out & said it was a cool idea they may put to use...how cool is that! We were there with friends last night, our friends loved them, the food...they said it was the best fish tacos ever! They would be back! They are always looking to improve and keep people happy. VERY GOOD FOOD!!! I've been to 551 West several times to listen to great bands and enjoy an excellent beer selection (and an awesome Fried Reese's Cup dessert)... but last Saturday we tried it for dinner. I was delighted by an excellent select of wings, and will definitely be back to work my way through more of them! I am a wing aficionado, and these were WAY up high on the list of some of the best wings I've enjoyed. The waitress told us they had jus bought a new sandwich press for their Cubans - so I tried one. It was VERY good - and a generous portion. (I had to take some home after eating the wings.) Wednesday's are currently AYCE Wings - and I'm going to try working through more of the list over the next couple weeks! Parking can be tight, but good service, great beer selection, and great food. I'm only giving this place one star because we came for the costume party and karaoke and the DJ was a huge jerk who only played his friends songs. Normally the DJ should go in order of who signed up, not favor his friends who aren't good anyway. No one else got to sing, and we weren't the only ones upset. I felt that was an extremely poor example of the bar. It was our first time there and our last, as long as that DJ is still employed. He was a total jerk and rude as heck to everyone. read more

Have been here a few times before for drinks but this was my first lunch experience. We went specifically because of the burger specials advertised for Restaurant Week. To begin with, the server was unaware they were participating in Restaurant Week, then she told us the specials weren't available until dinner. We asked about the soup of the day and she didn't know those either. We were the only table, there were only 5 of us, yet our wait time was rather long. I love townie dive bars and this meets all the criteria I would have for one of those. I have no idea how the food is, but the regulars at the bar with us seemed to love it. We did have a brownie sundae which was pretty solid. Really good beer selection and good service. We sat at the bar, so that may bias that. So proud of this new establishment in our neighborhood. There is a bar, with a vast array of taps, when you first walk in, but then there are a few spacious dining rooms to provide a different ambiance. What got me hooked was a special, shepherd's pie, which was unlike any other incarnation of the dish I have tried. I enthusiastically raved about it to the server and the owner/chef came out to tell me about the ingredients. Put it on the regular menu PLEASE! After several visits I keep returning. The signature "551 Burger" might sound disgusting to some, but if you're intrigued by the spicy/sweet combination, do it. It's fantastic. (Recommended if you enjoy the Thai Chicken Crepe from Rachel's.) And Holy Crap. The french fries. The garlic fries are a garlic lover's heaven and the sweet potato fries *could* be classified as a dessert! They offer live music some nights. I have visited this spot twice. Once was late night in the summer and they were offering half priced apps from 10pm-12. That was a great deal and the apps were delicious. The second time I went when the kitchen had just closed and the owner was nice enough to re-open it for us so we could get some food. The rice and beans were on point, and the fish tacos were amazing. The chicken tenders looked to have been made in house and the fries that accompanied the tenders were good. They have a great beer selection on tap and in bottles. The place is very large and seems like it can accommodate large groups. I will definitely go back and try more food! This was our first visit...probably our last! Pretty disappointed! Hubby had a Burger which was overcooked. I had a salad tonight which looked great! Presentation on the plate and taste, quality was A+....until I bit down on a pit and almost broke a tooth. All I got was an "I am sorry" and then the bill came. We had ordered $2 for that. Ordered an extra blue cheese dressing for the salad - got charged for that. The icing on the cake? When we were done and "lingering", they did everything to make it obvious that they wanted our table, besides coming right out and asking us to leave. Went to the bar for lunch and a beer. I was attracted by their large selection of drafts. I wasn't disappointed, 27 taps and some nice bottles to boot. Prices were good...$6 for a deschutes IPA and $5 for Troegs perpetual pints. Ordered a jalapeño burger. It was ok, really greasy but that might be from all the cheese and toppings. Fries were really good, fresh and hot. Price was a little high...$9.51 (weird pricing). The place was too dark for me...I like a lot of natural light in my bars. Service was good, food came out about the right amount of time. Nice large wing section so I will be back to check out the wings. Not bad but we have a bunch of these places.
