Went to Lanchester to visit my aunt Erin. My mom and dad took me to see her, since she recently moved up here. After visiting the dog park, we went here. The atmosphere was like a normal bar, but had a jukebox and darts. The appetizers are AWESOME. So was the food and the drinks. The waiters are nice, and has party hosting, great selection of food( vegan food and gluten free as well) and activities. The only problem is the bathrooms: They are tiny and kind of dirty. Delicious food! When we first walked in I was slightly unimpressed by the atmosphere, kind of a plain bar. Nothing too fancy, but when we got seated in one of the dining rooms they had some fun guitar decorations and neat table tops. Our server was very polite and apologetic for us waiting, which was not long at all. Then we got our food. Amazing! My husband orders any variation of a Cuban sandwich anytime he sees one on the menu, and he said this was by far the best of any he's had. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Can't say I have ever eaten here, but the bar is comfy, the bartenders attentive, and the pricing is good. Bathrooms are down a small flight of steps, but well maintained. This is a good "hangout" kind of place. Not sure if I would bring a date here unless she is tipsy already (LOL). read more

Looks like a cool new bar/restaurant in a still up and coming part of Lancaster. Live music is always a good draw, though parking was limited. Decor was average, slightly dated, I wish they did more to renovate the place. Beer selection seems above average for a neighborhood bar, and prices weren't too bad. Food was a miss though. Order came out luke-warm. Appetizers were overly greasy, presentation was underwhelming. Hopefully, they keep working on the menu. Might be back for drinks if I can easily find parking, won't be back for food. read more

The beer choices are awesome! My husband and I have really different beer preferences and they have a great variety that has always pleased us both. I'm a vegan and they have 2 vegan options on the menu. Awesome!! There's a Vegetarian Chili and Beans and Rice. My only "complaint" is that the dishes are pretty similar and they would be SO much better with some salsa and/or guacamole. Also, the chef uses canned (I'm assuming) coconut milk and it has coconut "hairs" in it which is weird and unpleasant. So, 5 stars for beer choices and service, 3 for food. read more

551 west has got to be the best bar that I have been to in Lancaster city in a very long time. The atmosphere was spectacular for my first time visit. It was 4th of July I'd like to add. The tv's were strategically located in the bar area. I had my pick of the World Cup games but the bar tender Lauren treated me like the American she knew I was. Being that it was 4th of July ( the day we told the king we were down with the motherland) and me being in the worlds greatest navy she put on "Independence Day". The movie of our generation that simply depicts the revolutionary war and shows just how great this great nation really is!! She made me feel at home with that. Moving on to my ordering. The drinks were amazing! A great selection of mixed drinks and beers to wet this sailors whistle! Now for what I ordered. I started off with the black bean quesadilla with chicken. Well the bar tender,Lauren, knew how American I was feeling that day hooked it up. She changed my order to the 551 quesadilla. That was such a great choice. The hearty chunks of chicken to feed my gains with bacon! Bacon is a true American work of art! Not that soft cook bacon we get from the loft over a good party Canada but nice chunks or sweet apple smoked bacon to make your taste buds scream I love you and heart scream I hate you but it's always a love hate relationship with those two!! My wife and I tried 551 West very recently and came away extremely satisfied. We arrived very early on a weekday and the Executive Chef was our host, bartender, and server. He could not have been more welcoming and attentive, despite wearing so many hats. The beer selection is awesome - maybe the best in Lancaster. My wife ordered the grilled mahi mahi dinner and reported it to be excellent. I ordered fish tacos and was served two large tacos, also with grilled mahi mahi, nestled in a larger hard taco shell which could be broken off and eaten with a warm queso sauce. It actually is hard to describe but was an entirely unique presentation. That came with a side of black beans and rice. Both meals were in the $15 range which I thought was most reasonable given the quality and quantity of food. This place is definitely worth a visit and I believe you will come away with an impression very different than the two earlier negative reviewers. read more

My wife and I were visiting from Philadelphia looking for an apartment to rent and we decided to give 551 West a try. We were looking for a relaxed atmosphere with good food and good beer. 551 delivered. We started with a Nugget Nectar and an Aprihop, two of our favorite brews. We then each ordered a burger (Chili & French) from the menu and both were cooked to perfection. If they ask if you want to substitute for sweet potato fries, do it! The owner made it a point to introduce himself and ensure that our meals were up to par. After being a little hesitant on the move from Philadelphia to Lancaster, 551 West eased my anxiety. This place can be compared to a lot of local beer bars that we frequent in the Art Museum area in Philly. We can't wait to be a part of the community and enjoy many great meals and drinks at 551. The only problem I do have with the place is that they are Pittsburgh sports fans... I guess it's something else we have to get used to moving to Lancaster... read more

Ok not sure. The wood paneling from the sixties has to go. A little over priced and the pricing is a gimmick. Every item ends in .51 .....so instead of something being priced at 6.99, I think they decided to price it at 7.51. I paid 4.51 for a CUP of soup. So in my opinion every item ends is overpriced. Judging from the looks I didn't think this was gonna be my place but it surprised me. For an appetizer, we got Spicy Crab Dip with bread spears. As Maryland residents, we were not expecting much but the crab dip here is actually better than most places in Maryland. I got the Jambalaya and my friend got the Surf & Turf. If you're considering getting the Jambalaya, don't. It's overly hot and not enough actual spice; I was disappointed. However, her Surf & Turf was really good, the turf part was the best meat we've had in a long time. Next time I want steak in Lancaster I am going here, even if I don't want the surf, it's that good. Overall opinion, I would recommend this place as a good casual choice as long as you avoid the jambalaya. read more

Ive been to 551 West several times now. Their menu is totally awesome. I tried fish tacos for the first time EVER at 551 and wow, I have no desire to try them elsewhere because I fear they wouldn't compete. Was there last weekend, wasn't sure what I wanted, went with a safe chicken fingers/tenders and fries. OMG; I was blown away by the first bite of the homemade fries, then the tenders were so good that I didn't need the dipping sauce. and the dessert menu; I just know they have deep fried Oreos that are out of this world!! my wife and I took two couples and my persnickety sister here on a whim. Then I read the reviews in the car on the iphone and expected the worst. When we entered the crowd looked a little sketchy, but then again maybe they were wondering what local nursing home let these old farts out on a Saturday night. Plus there was some band coming later long after our bedtime. But I was surprised. it wasn't bad. Service by our male server was smooth and quiet. They had a huge selection of beers on tap and I had the boddington pub ale - great stuff. Most of our crew had one of variety of burgers and I had the ahi tuna sandwich - all were pretty tasty. Don't come here looking for fine dining. Come here for an informal good time with friends. Even my sister from new joisey enjoyed herself, but maybe because I picked up her tab. The bathroom wall had a cool framed picture entitled, "the bathrooms of Lancaster county pubs". I'm thinkin I gotta get one of those but realized my wife's exquisite tastes in décor would put the kibosh on that...perhaps my office. First, the decor is wood - everywhere. It's like being below-deck on an old ship or something. The bar smacks you in the face the minute you come in the door, and it's clearly the focus of the business. You can't hear yourself think until you get past the bar to the second dining area. The food was awful - the fried pickles were SO salty it wasn't even funny. Pickles are salty on their own - why salt the hell out of the batter you fry them in? The dipping sauce was so-so. The prices were very high for what turned out to be really below average food. My husband's fried fish was frozen and tasteless, the beans were obviously out of a can and unseasoned and the rice was bleh. Asparagus overcooked. My salad's ingredients were OK, but the dressing was odd-tasting. My beer was luke warm, and the desserts were described as "fried snickers, fried oreos, or angel food cake with some kind of sauce on it." Um, no thanks. This dismal dinner for 2 came to more than $50 (including tip, which was 20% because it's not the waiter's fault he works for a pathetic restaurant). We will NOT be going back. read more

To sing super subpar karaoke? To eat at a bar that has a legit vegetarian offering? This place has you covered for ALL of those things. That's right, whether you are in the mood for a towny vibe or fine dining, you can somehow get all of that at 551. In Lancaster for a meeting nearby, so my coworkers and i stopped in. If we didn't have a meeting in walking distance, we would have never tried it. Parking is tight and limited. Plus, we were all hungry and it was the closest place. Food wasn't bad, but the place is dated and had a funky odor. Much better places to eat in Lancaster. Had a great time tonight with friends. Great acoustic guitar player. The sweet potato fries...were amazing!!!! I had the crab cake and thought it was good and I disagree with other review, I didn't find their pricing over the top. Considering you are going to pay almost 12.00 for a burger anywhere you go, $14 for a crab cake is not outrageous. So many great beers available, it is nice to find a place that gives you options, opposed to just Miller Lite. We also had their fried brownie dessert- I am pretty sure I was in heaven when I saw this come out. Who fries brownies? Well they do...and they are delicious. Overall, we had an enjoyable evening with great food. I would recommend it, try it out! read more
