I entered the premises with a sarcastic attitude, ready to tear it apart. On the outside, it doesn't look like much. Very clearly, it is a converted residential house, and the big sign out the front looked a little unkept, generally an indication that they can't afford to maintain it so it pulls in your attention. I thought there's no way this place could be that great. But boy, was I wrong! This is One of Orem's best-kept secrets apparently, because after 3 years going to school and living here, I'd never heard of it. Even though I live just down the road. But the brisket was possibly the best I've had my whole life. Deliriously delicious, and a single meal was more food than I could eat in one sitting. The price is a little more, but for that much food, it's a fair deal, and there's a great student meal at a low price (as long as you can show your school ID). It's nice to have a legit bbq place in Provo. I think this is the closest thing you will get to Texas bbq here in Provo. The inside is nice and a comfortable place to talk with friends. I had there pulled pork and brisket. I thought The pulled pork was awesome but there brisket wasn't anything special. The two side were fantastic I got coleslaw and Mac and cheese. We had Five Star BBQ cater our wedding luncheon in the AF Canyon due to the COVID virus making us change our plans in every way possible. Let me tell you, this BBQ place is legit. I was so worried they wouldn't make it up the canyon in time due to long delays because of construction. They made it 10 minutes early! We had the Brisket, Pulled Pork, Mac and Cheese, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Cornbread/ Honeybutter. The sauces were amazing (the kinda hot- is REALLY hot) we loved the House and Sweet sauces. Everything was seasoned perfectly, and the cornbread is dense and sweet. I liked this place better than R&R BBQ. The mac and cheese was (creamy, pepper, cheesey) garlic mashed potatoes were loaded, and were very flavorful with skins, chives, garlic and pepper, and the meats were SO good. Some of the best BBQ I have had to date. We were so happy with how easy it was to call them, and have them follow through with everything they said they would do. Normally, we love-love-love 5 Star. Given the current situation (COVID 19 and my leg injury from a vacation in Mexico last month) we're trying to support local businesses. Ordered for entire family ($90 w/tip) and awaited delivery. Soon (more than an hour later) realized that we were missing an entire kids meal and they had subbed sausage for brisket on one of the full meals w/o trying to find out if that was ok. So it left that person with two orders of sausage. Called 5 Star directly so that they had a chance to remedy the situation. The young man that answered the phone said they were out of brisket (but were you an hour ago?) so he couldn't do anything about that. He could make a new kids meal but I'd have to come pick it up (not a possibility, that's why I used Door Dash to begin with) and that he couldn't refund me any money. I'd have to contact Door Dash for that. Which I did and they refunded me $13 and some change. He asked what I wanted to do. I told him I would contact Door Dash for the refund but won't be ordering delivery from 5 Star again. He seemed ok with that ‍ Here's to hoping y'all make it through this without turning away too many long term customers. I usually don't complain like this, especially because things have always been fine in the past but this experience wasn't good, at all. I don't know if they are under new management but something is different. Also, when my husband saw a mouse run behind the counter that was too much. I've been coming here almost every week for awhile now but this last experience put an end to that. I went in last week for lunch with my husband. We were one of the first customers but we ended up waiting about 20 minutes for them to finish putting everything out before we even got served. I got the brisket plate which is usually awesome but this time it was really dry. I don't know if that's because it was near the end but it wasn't good. I wanted the garlic bread but when they found mold on it I opted for the corn bread. For sides I got the mash potatoes and coleslaw. My husband got the pork sandwich with mac and cheese and green salad. My husbands pork wasn't too bad, a little dry but edible. My cornbread was really dry and stale but the honey butter they serve with it was really good. My mash potatoes seemed to be microwaved, they were really dry and didn't taste right for just being made like they said. My husbands mac and cheese didn't have a lot of sauce on it but we were able to finish it. The Coleslaw is always really good so I'm glad I got that at least. read more

I just got back from Kansas City where I payed some ridiculous amount of money for barbecue that is supposedly the nations best. It was very tasty, but the pulled pork and slaw I had at Five Star was every bit as good for a small amount of money. * Just a heads up - it does seem a bit like the place came straight out of SC or Mississippi, but that just tells you that like the best BBQ places in The South, Five Star is focused on the food, not the decor. read more

BBQ is best I've found in the area but their process is horrible. They ran out of fries at 5pm on a Friday night once and the wait is usually long and overly complicated, with staff running around and 3-4 people assembling 1 dish in an ineffective way. If you want BBQ in Utah County this is the place to go. Sure I've had better BBQ in the deep south (Alabama/Mississippi), but Utah is not the deep south and so I'm not going to compare this place too much with that. Everyone's BBQ is different, and everyone has their favorite. Even if this doesn't become your all time favorite, it's still a good little place to get some quality BBQ. The meat is very tasty and tender, they have good sauces, and the sides are not too bad (better than Dickey's BBQ by far). Honestly if you're looking for excellent sides at a BBQ place then you don't know what you're talking about. It's all about the meat people. They have a sampler plate that I would suggest for a first time, make sure to take someone with you to share it because they give you plenty and microwaved BBQ leftovers are just a mistake no matter where you get it from. read more

Definitely a place to go for any BBQ aficionado. Not only are the meats smoked and slow cooked until they're a perfectly savory, melt-in-your-mouth bite, they also have amazing sauces to accompany it. I got the 2 meat plate with Mac and cheese and coleslaw for sides. The mac and cheese is a perfect comfort food accompaniment to the dish. The coleslaw is of a great consistency, the cabbage has a good crunch and the sauce isn't too sweet or too much mayo. The corn bread is just as good as any place you would find in the South. If you spend a long enough time in the restaurant, you'll walk out smelling like you want to eat yourself. Portions are generous and they have to go containers if you need to take some home, but it's so delicious that nobody will judge you if you clean your plate. read more

The food is excellent but the service is painfully slow. The tables don't get cleared and from reading other reviews the bathrooms is and has been out of service for over 2 months. I sat by the door and counted 8 people who left over a 20 minute period because the line is so slow. It actually moves fast when you consider there are only 3 employees working. 2 years ago this was my favorite BBQ in town. But with the steady increase in prices and the equally steady decrease in quality, I have been choosing other BBQ joints more and more. I was craving their Mac and cheese today which alone was worth going here to eat. Upon requesting a lean brisket sandwich with a side of mac. The red head taking my order told me they only had this little chunk of fatty brisket left. The chunk she was playing with. Squishing it through her fingers like silly putty, watching the juices puddle on the cutting board and than sopping it back up with the now sloppy mush of so called meat. I asked if they had more coming out soon. Her response was a snarky nope. Just as another employee walked out with a fresh slab of brisket. I brushed it off even though she shorted me meat. My wife received twice as much as me. Only to sit down and taste that they have completely changed their "number one side". They now use artificial cheese in their mac n cheese! Some good barbecue! We like another place in Orem that has great meat but VERY sorry sides. Five Star has great meat AND sides. We tried brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. They were all good, and they have several kinds of sauce to choose from. For sides we had beans (delicious, and I'm picky about those!), slaw, potato salad and mac n cheese. They were all delicious and tasted home made. The gals behind the counter were very friendly & helpful. Even if you're a fan of that other Orem place, give this one a try to switch things up. The student special is like paying fast-food prices for a lot of extremely high quality food. The ribs are the best ribs I've ever had, and I love the pork too. Combined with mac and cheese, fries (huge servings), and a soda satisfies every flavor craving. I will say my one major problem with the place is that you leave smelling like a camp fire and it makes my eyes itch. #FiveStarBBQ is, hands down, the best BBQ joint in the nation - or at least, in my opinion, which is never ever wrong. The food is spectacular. It's smoked long and slow with some of the best rub you'll ever find. The service is exquisite. The manager is the friendliest, happiest young man. Keep the place friendly and be sure to give the manager a nice big hug, even a kiss on the cheek if you feel daring. The ladies up front are the best, and they can make some darn good food as well. You'd be hard pressed to find a better place, with better food, better employees, better service, or a better dining environment. The building is small, but don't be out off by it. It's a very cozy and enjoyable atmosphere. The sandwiches are massive, and delicious. The sauce is fantastic. And the brisket, well that was my first and only brisket, but it was some great stuff. If you love BBQ, or want to try it, or just like to find new places, you CANNOT pass up FiveStar BBQ in Orem. I might come back to Utah for the food as much as the sights and people. I don't know what the hell has happened to this place. I have eaten here realistically about 20 times and would consider myself somewhat a regular. I have introduced several friends and family to this place because it was sooo good. I lived in Kansas City for a number of years and needless to say good BBQ has found a place in my heart. This is the only place in the area with the exception of BAM BAMS that can hold a candle to the top quality BBQ that I miss so much from the mid west. I am torn about this review and wish I had been more involved with yelping back when this place was doing good. I recall talking with one of the staff members roughly 3 months ago about a change in the decor and some of the familiar faces that would regularly be working the counter. My interpretation was that they were experiencing a transfer in ownership but was ensured that the recipes and everything was going to remain the same. Over time I noticed a change in the interior decor, the menu, the staff, and worst of all a slow decline on the quality of the food. I write this review in an effort to bring attention to this problem in hopes that they will make an effort to turn things around before it is too late. I know several guys at work that used to insist that we go here for lunch and often and now due to these changes they do not care to ever go back. Some of the things that have been noted are the staff being "chincy" about the cuts of meat. I understand trying to run a successful business requires close attention to portions given for money paid. But after regularly visiting this establishment I have noticed a decline in the quality of the food. I have tried nearly everything all of the sides were amazing I would always order the two meat plate with brisket, and alternate between their ribs and bbq chicken as the second option. The mac and cheese has gone from amazing to dry and bland. the brisket is getting fattier and fattier, I am not afraid of a little bit of fat but the last serving I had was to the point that I ended up throwing half of it away. I ordered brunswick stew and this was the final straw the stew was without any sort of sauce/broth and was the dry old ingredients that would have been put in the stew. It consisted of old shriveled waxy pieces of corn and mushy green beans with dry, difficult to chew pieces of my best guess being some brisket or pulled pork the taste was so bad I couldn't even tell between the two needless to say it was nothing like the stew that is normally so good here it was a nasty pasty mash up of everything that should not be served to a paying customer. Had this not been a take out order I would have demanded my money back and for them to observe the crap they were serving. This experience was awful enough following several other recent let downs that I am not sure I will ever be back. It is too bad because this place used to be awesome. read more

The sides are awesome too, not sure i've had a side I didn't like yet.. the macaroni is way good, the best side is probably the cream corn, and when you get coleslaw as a side they give a TON and it's the best! So delicious!!! Words cannot describe 5 Star. The food is so tasty and fresh. They mix the coleslaw right in front of you when you order it so it's nice and crunchy. The prices can't be beat and neither can the portions. The staff is so nice and helpful. Just a great family owned place where they actually put LOVE into what they are doing. It's a must try.
