If you like good food and being treated like crap then this is the place for you... Too bad . From the bartender to the waitress it seemed like a coordinated effort to humiliate me and my date... This is my go to place for a nice meal or to celebrate something special. The skate wing is an amazing entree. But, you could really be more than thrilled with the appetizer options and drinks- escargots, chicken liver mousse, raw bar- all fantastic. If you have a food allergy - 2 words Don't go Went for brunch yesterday looking forward to a really good brunch. It started with the hostess. "We have seats only at the bar and it is such a fun experience." We are looking for a nice relaxing brunch. If we want a fun experience we would go to a fun place. I noted to the server that I am gluten free and she just looked at me in a curious way. I ordered and again said I am gluten free. I asked if they have gf bread and she states no but we do have wheat muffins and brioche bread. Our brunch came and it was just ok. My husbands wheat muffin tasted like a burger since it was grilled on the same grill as the burgers. Twenty minutes later I had a gf attack. Something in the eggs??? Not sure what the big deal is with this place, other than its' nice, open layout . Beet salad is delicious, but pepper appetizers only marginal (how about some spicy oil instead of quasi-mayo for sauce?) as was steak. I am a regular at 5 corners for dinner. I have always enjoyed the staff and their attentiveness. However today I went for brunch with an old friend. Absolutely a horrible experience. Bartender was probably the rudest I have ever experienced. We were there for late lunch on a Saturday and she completely ignored us. The couple across from us asked the status of their meal and she belted out "what you think I not place order?" The couple were horrified. Given the fact we sat there for 15 minutes without contact and seeing the experience of the other couple we walked out. As a loyal customer I am now having reservations for about ever coming back! I have been for dinner and brunch, and I love the completely different vibes. 5CK is a beautiful space. The menu is fab. I think with some more experienced staff, this place would totally rock. Today for brunch at around 1:30p, for example, I'm not sure I saw a single employee over the age of 20, except perhaps in the kitchen. It showed in the indifference my sweet but very young bartender showed for my tea request (English Breakfast and Earl Grey are indeed very different) and when it was presented in a tiny tea cup (a tiny amount of tea served with loose tea in a tea bag) with no offer of milk or sugar, much less honey, for $3.25. As an aside, I really don't care about the price, or I wouldn't go to the places I do, but I do notice quality gaps. He removed it without asking if I wanted more hot water. I never got my fruit request (and luckily it didn't show up on the bill, either). His fresh squeezed oj couldn't have been more than 1/2 cup of juice served in a wine glass, while my grapefruit juice was a full pour in a rocks glass. The door to the bar really needs to be blocked in the winter, as it creates a wicked cold draft when it opens, while the main door has a velvet curtain blocking the cold air. My salmon was ok, but skimpy on the accoutrements, and so it felt kind of heavy. The boy liked his regular old eggs just fine, and his coffee was served in a nice big mug. The bartender suggested a sticky toffee thing for dessert, which was sweet but heavy and I wish I had stuck with fresh fruit. So.. it's good but it sure could be better. It wants to be a fancy little bistro in old guard Marblehead, but it still needs a bit more polish. read more

The food was, indeed, really good. The salads were fresh, the mains were nice, the desert was too much. All was technically well done and I enjoyed it, even the stuff I threw up. Our waitress, Mary, was very directive, to the point of not asking but taking a 25% tip on a gift card, and while I did not enjoy her favorite dish very much, I am sure she likes it. boy, it could be great, but that night, it was not so great. sometimes you are in a bad mood, and sometimes different people need direction but don't want to take it. And, if I can't keep it down, maybe its me, or maybe this place and elephant walk have some oil I'm allergic to, or something. But, that's the way I would call it. I was at 5 Corners last Thursday night. My friend and I were really looking forward to going. There were so many good things said about this place. I have to say- I had disappointments. It is like they packed as many tables as possible in to that space. The waitresses can barely get around and the one we had was not very attentive until my friend made it clear she had not bothered to give us more water when she took our water pitcher away. The dish we had was very good. No complaints there. It was the tagliatelle dish on the menu and it was very well flavored. My friend knew the woman at the next table -and at first we were hesitant to talk about anything personal for fear she'd hear. But then we realized there was so much noise - it wouldn't be a problem. Of course you go to a restaurant for the food - but the ambiance is important when you are out for dinner. And the noise, the close tables and the inattentive, disinterested waitress will prevent me from returning any time soon read more

Enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the new 5 Corners Kitchen in Marblehead last night. My husband and I went early (5:30) but by 7:30 pm, the place was rocking! You definitely should make a reservation. This place will be very popular. I had the pate app and steak frite - both excellent! My husband had oysters and than the salmon - also well prepared, fresh and packed with flavor. Stephanie was at the bar and helped us with nice wine choices. This new, young chef is a wonderful addition to our lovely town. Where to begin? First, our server couldn't recommend a decent glass of Cab to save his life. Then, the chicken liver mousse I ordered came without grilled levain. When we finally did receive it, we discovered to our horror that the mousse was rancid, and sent it back in disgust. Our waiter's apology seemed, in a word, feigned, and we proceeded to order dinner--though in hindsight I think it would have been wise at this point to have paid our bill and departed. I do wish I had read Daniel M's review of 5/09/14 prior to ordering, because my selection of the oven roasted chicken was quite the blunder. Salty, dried out, and in a word, blasé, this dish is very much over done, and I do feel as though menu as a whole is about as creative a third grade art project. For dessert, my partner and I decided to share an affogato, but kindly requested of our server that the kitchen substitute the caramel gelato for the customary vanilla. Imagine our immense disappointment following the grandiose ceremony in which a vial of burning hot espresso is drizzled over ice cold gelato, only to discover that it was vanilla.... For the money our meal cost us, I have only five words: Go to The Blue Ox. read more

Went again for a celebration, and was again disappointed. Its no fluke, this place is way overrated. I swear, a man could die of thirst in this place. Had to beg for a glass of wine. Doesnt every good waiter/waitress know that you keep the customers in drinks if all else fails (it increases your tip). No one told these folks. Food was average, and below for the price. Want to go somewhere else with a good atmosphere and food? Try 62 in Salem. Or, better yet, try Bella Verona (Italian) in Salem. Best place in the North Shore. read more

We came here for dinner with my in-laws and family. The waiter was very polite, knowledgeable and made some awesome suggestions. This place is small and cozy with a beautiful decor and atmosphere. A reservation is recommended, it can get pretty packed on the weekends. Our food was great. Fresh, tasty and presented really well. The lobster I ordered before my main meal was good, but it lacked a bit of creativity. It was just lobster on ice with a common sauce, but very fresh and tasty. It came pre cracked, making it a breeze to start enjoying it right away. Don't let their small menu fool you. Every dish in this menu is worth trying, and we truly love almost everything. Just got home from the (re)opening party and consider this fair warning... you all better make your reservations now. Folk'll be coming from far and wide and they'll be thrilled they did. The redesign (post fire gut and expansion) is hip without making the diners feel like cougars. Translation: The space is fresh as linen with a just enough of a metro nod to offer a funky vibe that easily spans a few decades of diner's sensibilities. Cleverly placed design elements/conversation pieces are so effective that folks really do talk about them! The interior is spacious without feeling cavernous and offers an acoustic balance that makes the room fun without overloading the eardrums. One can readily envision many happy evenings in comfort and gastronomic joy. Right, 'cuz then there's the food. Really, there's nothing but raves here for chef/owner Barry Edelman. I've never tasted anything he has put out that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. And tonight was no different. If the party items are on the menu I'm gonna be first in line for dinner this week. The lamb lollipops (larger than lollipops actually) were lemony and lovely, the oysters insanely fresh and chilled to perfection and the escargot - seriously??? Perfectly supple with just the right amount of garlic & butter to make the darn things sing. Huge congrats to Barry and Emily - and just in case YOU didn't take me seriously at the opening of this review - suggest you do now... grab a reservation asap and really, truly enjoy! read more

First time there on 10/11/19. Amazing small bites came out in 5 minutes - the romanesco was delicious! I had the homemade pasta w homemade sausage and broccoli rapini - WOW! So much flavor and didn't leave a drop behind. Homemade gelatos were out of this world and flavors I have never had. The chef knew our friend and sent out homemade charcuterie as well that tasted like it was shipped right from Italia that day but was made in house. All around an great experience w cool atmosphere, friendly service and amazing food. All 6 guests in our party loved it! read more

This restaurant is the best dining experience on the North Shore of Boston. We just returned from our at least weekly dinner at the bar. The food is excellent and all the bartenders we have meet have been very professional and courteous. The steak frites, salmon, sole , scallops, chicken and pasta entrees are all top quality, as are all the apps. We have tried pretty much everything on the menu and it is hard to find fault with anything. The staff, from when you walk in till you leave, are well trained and top notch. Anyone looking for a restaurant the quality of a top Boston restaurant can stay in Marblehead for the same quality and service. read more

Decor and atmosphere were very nice, but the food was more than disappointing. We had to return the shrimp cocktail appetizer and the main courses were just ok. The fact that all of the reviews so far have given this place five stars demonstrates only how hard up we are for decent restaurants in Marblehead. We were very excited when five corners opened up several months ago, and have now been approximately five times (3 for dinner and two for brunch). I would give the food four stars - some of the appetizers (such as the soft shell crab) are very good. Steak frites is delicious (especially the frites). Others are just OK (like the overpriced and underwhelming gnocchi). Brunch entrees are generally good (I especially like the croque madame). Desserts are quite good. Prices are generally in line with what they should be (with a few exceptions like the gnocchi) and portions are fine. Drinks - they don't have a full liquor license (only beer, wine, and cordials), but they still make certain cocktails substituting pisco for the relevant spirit. It works out OK in most cases. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired. This is a small place and tables are close together. This in and of itself isn't bad, but five corners has TERRIBLE acoustics (perhaps the ill-advised tin ceiling?). My hearing is good, but several people I regularly dine with don't have very good hearing. If this is the case for you or anyone in your party, I'd say skip this place - the hard of hearing won't be able to meaningfully interact. All they'll be able to hear is a general roar of conversation that is a constant -even in a space with a fairly small number of tables. The service is pretty terrible. I had heard from others that the service could be rude, though this hasn't been my experience - mine has been closer to inattentive/non-existent. Waits for food can be excruciatingly long (and can follow a long wait to even place orders). During your wait, you don't get much in the way of communication (or service). It doesn't make a lot of sense to me - this place has 15 tables at most, and has more than enough servers. I don't understand why it's so hard to keep the service running along smoothly. I will dine hear again for the food, but in some part it will be a lack of good options in town that guides me there. read more

The fi and I came here for brunch and for once in our entire lives, ordered two entrees and even after clearing off our plates were talking about coming again for dinner. Throughout my life I have been searching for the perfect brioche french toast. I never knew that I was eating garbage until I experienced the mind blowing awesomeness of 5 corners french toast. Don't think twice - just order it. The fi ordered eggs benedict with mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes which was fantastic - the way it should be made. Service was great (our waitress Stephanie was fabulous) and the atmosphere was light, airy and trendy. read more

The atmosphere sets the tone with the wine glass chandeliers, cozy booths, and quaint bar...it is the perfect place for date night or dinner with friends. Oysters with champagne-vinegar mignonette and Cranberry Beret Cocktail as a start to the meal, Steak Frites and the Skate Wing for entrees, and Creme Brulee to sweetly end it all. I have come here to 5CK many, many times since it opened several years ago, but am only now getting around to writing a review. What prompted me was a dinner I had at one of the top restaurants in Boston--Menton--over the weekend. We spent a fortune and definitely had a good dinner, but at one point I said to my dining partner, "This chicken doesn't touch the taste of Five Corners Kitchen's chicken." At that point I figured I should probably write a review. The fact that 5CK, a little restaurant in Marblehead, can compete with (and quality-wide, supersedes the quality of) food guru Barbara Lynch's restaurant Menton says a lot. If you want presentation, over-the-top service, bite-sized food, and a bill that will make you consider getting a second job, go to Menton. If you would like mouth-watering food, good service in a nice environment (though nobody will be racing you back to your seat to pull it out for you, refolding your napkin twenty times, or calling you by name), go to 5CK. That said, 5CK has an upscale vibe and can compete with any nice restaurant in terms of ambience. If you go to 5CK, and I recommend you do, ***get the chicken*** for your main course. Typically chicken is a fairly boring entree, and I prefer to order other more interesting items when I dine out. But at 5CK, I find it almost impossible to order anything else because the chicken just calls my name. It's crazy good, and I almost think it has crystal meth embedded in it because it is mind-blowing. Other delicious options are the skate (when it's on the menu) and the steak frites. Appetizer-wise, the homemade sausage is mouth-watering, and though it wasn't on the menu in the past few months, it seems to be back. Dessert-wise, the warm toffee pudding will make your knees buckle. I would not have thought that anything with the word "pudding" in it would be worth ordering, but it is to-die-for. The gelato options are interesting but none of them do do it for me. The creme brulee is delicious, as are a number of their mixed drinks. I highly recommend 5CK. read more

Although i am currently from New York, my family are locals and we hosted a dinner for my brother's fiancée and her family that flew in from San Francisco for a "meet the family" get together.. They were delighted to be staying in Marblehead and loved the East Coast sailing scene. We ordered a dozen oysters - 4 of each from the special menu and our favorite was the local from Duxbury with a classic sauce of shallots and champagne vinegar. The Steak Frites was perfect - the steak was very tender and the fries were addictive. My brother had a locally caught Striped Bass, perfectly golden seared over citrus dressed greens. Others at our table raved about their food, especially the tender Skate Wings. Our family are very good home cooks but we decided to take the San Francisco bunch out and we were all so impressed that we had to discuss everyone's meal the next day over morning coffee. 5 Corners has been on our "must try" list since moving to Marblehead this past August. This Friday, we finally made it happen! This is a bustling restaurant - and in hindsight, we probably should have made reservations, but conveniently, there was a table on the bar side of the restaurant that was free so we were seated right away. The restaurant is beautiful - I can't say enough about the gorgeous light fixtures...the one made of Mason jars hanging above our table was one of my favorites. On the far back wall, there is a large mirror and around that, they are slowly building a frame of wine corks ... one cork at a time! Very cool. After sitting down and perusing the small, French-infused menu - we decided to go with the cheese plate to start and I ordered the steak frites and he ordered the pork chop. I'm not a duck fan and probably about 51% of the menu featured duck of some kind. It limited my choices, but I still found something I liked. The cheese plate: aside from the runner who dropped it off (different from our actual server) forgetting to tell us what the cheeses were...we dug right in and weren't disappointed. The bread was toasted with a garlic herb butter (I could have eaten it alone). There was a bit of camembrie (mix of Camembert and Brie). Very creamy and rich. We also had a bleu goat cheese. I'm not a huge fan of bleu cheese and I have never even heard of bleu goat cheese...but I tried it. Texture-wise, it was goat cheese but it had that sharp, smoky (read: dirty sock) flavor of bleu. There was a third cheese that I promptly forgot the name of but it was my favorite and I wish I could remember! Next up: my steak frites. They came out perfectly cooked with a side of some sort of garlic aoili I believe (they didn't even need it as the seasoning was perfect). The fries were delish and the side salad on the plate (mesculine greens and tiny red onions) was perfectly dressed and a nice palate cleanser. My SO was less impressed by the pork chop. It was a very tender, thick cut pork chop, but the inside was pinker than what he's comfortable (or rather, accustomed) to eating. He kept stealing my steak frites! Finally, for dessert - we decided on the creme brulee (my favorite). It came out with that beautiful sugar shell and we thought it would be perfect, but alas, the sugar tasted burnt. There is a fine line when it comes to creme brulee. It's a dessert that seems deceivingly easy to make, but too light a hand, the sugar shell isn't thick enough and too heavy a hand...you can easily burn the sugar. In an effort to give some feedback, I told our waiter about it. I praised the pudding itself because it was divine, but I told him we ate around the sugar shell because it was burnt. He immediately took it off our bill and I apologized saying that wasn't my intent nor was it necessary! The waiter was wonderful and said that while he understands it wasn't our intent to get a free dessert, he appreciated the feedback and would take it off regardless. We gave him his 20% tip plus an extra $10 to cover the dessert anyway. He deserved it! I am eager to come back and see what else we can experiment with. I saw some amazing crocks of Onion Soup with a heavy dose of Gruyere cheese that I am dying to try on my next visit! read more
