Coffee and donuts? What is not to love about this place??? I had a vanilla latte - it was smooth and full-bodied - just the way I like it. Add a donut, and there's no going back!!! There goes my no-carb diet. We sampled a variety of donuts today: Blackberry Chevre (topped with fresh whipped cream and walnuts) was spectacular, whoever thought up this recipe is a genius!!! I had a couple of bites of the Maple Bacon fritter which lives up to its hype (but I'm not sure I could ever actually finish one...) PB&J reminded me a bit of Doughnut Plant in NYC but the PB glaze was a bit too sweet for me (the jelly inside is absolutely lovely though). Old-fashioned Chocolate is quite dark and bitter-sweet and may not be the fudgy gooey confection you might expect, but quite good with coffee. Blueberry Cake (special feature) was good - cakey, fragrant, blue-pink - like a retro donut you used to get in a clear plastic box at Safeway but upscaled. Salted Caramel old-fashioned donut was also very good, with a thick sweet glaze - also a bit sweet and large for my liking, but my daughter took her time savoring every bite, so I consider it a hit! They do some good coffee here! The normal brewed coffee is full and well rounded, while the espresso and latte's are done with skill! The donuts here are some of the best you can get in the city! The atmosphere is great, and the building is well designed. read more

i went there to meet an old friend while i was visiting Vancouver. 49th parallel coffee is in the trendy neighborhood of Main and 16th. the place was busy on a saturday afternoon in October. nice atmosphere with a few tables and some benches but almost everything was taken. there are also some patio seating but i felt it was too cool to sit outside (but people were sitting out)i was lucky to find a table after i ordered my green tea. i should have tried one of the lattes but the tea was good. the donuts look good but i didn't think i can finish it and have dinner later. my friend ordered one and i had a taste of the donut. it was very good. i would go back when i am in town again but this time i will go earlier so i can enjoy a donut, latte and not worry about spoiling my appetite for dinner :) read more

I love the coffee. Been here three times, got their iced Americano twice. Awesome, so delicious. It's so strong, that when you add dairy, it swirls and I get lost watched the pattern. Then when you drink it, perfect flavor, I really savored it. Came bask with friends and they were excited for the doughnuts. I had tried 2 kinds before but wasn't impressed. Their teas are wonderful. Beautiful presentation. Decor is too, good for people-watching with those big windows, not great for getting a lot of work done during peak hours. Like others, I find their coffee to be super acidic and bitter. It just doesn't sit well with me, and I've had to force myself to take a few sips so the whole thing doesn't go to waste. I'm someone who takes my coffee black or with a spoon or two of non-dairy, and never any sweeteners, so I'm used to strong coffee. But the blend they use here just makes my tongue wince, and it seems others have the same experience. Their homemade almond milk too, is a bit 'off' for my taste - the flavors of date just don't sit right, and because their coffee is so acidic, it ends up 'curdling' it all the time. Almond/soy doesn't curdle because they aren't dairy, but the acid in the coffee causes the proteins in the non-dairy milk to coagulate, and it doesn't look pretty. When you're at a cafe and spending around $5 on a coffee, you want your coffee to look pretty! I think pre-warming the almond/soy might help. Service is hit and miss. Some baristas are great, and others, well - there's a bit of pretentiousness. I also find the division of labour a bit unsettling - all women of colour doing the cleaning and bussing etc, while the majority of baristas are white. What's up with that? Love the atmosphere and the doghnuts by Luckys' at their Main Street location. A welcoming community feeling. Have brought my kids several times on a weekend. I love coffee but would prefer a different coffee bean to the ones I have tried so far. I find most of the brews they carry, high on the citrus. Acidic. A profile that some like I am sure. Would prefer if you could brew something more low-acid, full bodied nutty and rich. The Sumatra or Malabar bean would be great. A friend of mine who loves coffee agreed with me. Still will return for atmosphere and doghnuts. read more

There's this wavy haired, blond kid who works on til and he seems completely unimpressed with having to interact with other humans. Like you might not even get a hello when you walk up to the register. Just a blank look. Maybe instead of working in customer service he should try data entry or IT somewhere. Also I've never found the coffee to be very good. It's incredibly bright and acidic. Don't mix milk into the brewed coffee. It curdles. Now, I am no coffee connoisseur and I know people who like it but I do find it has a very peculiar taste. read more

How have I not reviewed 49th Parallel?! I love this place. The best coffee and the best donuts in a great location. My favourite is the coffee and donut of the day deal - good value for your cash and mmmm, did I mention they have donuts with BACON in them? So delicious. The donuts are a bit pricey, it's true, but once in awhile I just gotta have one. This is a great spot to sit in the sun in the summer (they have a patio) or curl up in a booth or big cushy chair near the fireplace in the winter. Or you could just stop by, purchase a bunch of donuts pretending they are for your friends and then go home and eat them all yourself! Not that I've ever done that... read more

The Second time when I came here is exactly one year later. Not that the place is not good, on the contrary, the great taste of its Macchiato has impressed me deeply. It is a revisit to celebrate our 1st anniversary. We couldn't find seats available on the long bench where we seated, but the coffee tasted exactly as amazingly good as I remembered. I have been to 49th Parallel Coffee a couple times with my partner in the past couple of months and I have to say that I'm a fan of the donuts (or I guess doughnuts since I'm not in the states) and atmosphere of this place. It is a nice place to just hang out whether it is with your computer, since there are several plugs and tables, or to just chat with your friends, since there is plenty of room for a small or large group. I had the regular doughnut, which was the other half of my partners $4 coffee and doughnut. It was really good, but I wouldn't say the best of the best. The second time, I had the peanut butter and jelly doughnut. It was great, but again, not exactly the best of the best. I haven't had the coffee here, so I can't really say much about that. Would I recommend 49th Parallel Coffee? You bet I would... Next time I go, I am going to try the coffee and let you all know what I think about that too... And as Always, Have Fun!!! I am obsessed with 49th Parallel espresso, it's strong and smooth - exactly the way I like it. The milk was perfectly steamed and there wasn't too much foam in my latte. The donuts were also good! Really enjoyed my espresso shot as well as my cold brew in the early morning hours. The shot was done well and on a Kees van der Westen Spirit espresso machine. Had a very tasty yogurt parfait with granola. Amazing space to sit and enjoy yourself. Very spacious and spread out with seating available from tables and booths to lounge areas with couches and comfy chairs. Very friendly staff and great open bar concept. This is a beautiful space for a coffee date or just hang out for a few hours. However, this spaces isn't made for caffeinated students to cram for their final exams. There aren't plugs everywhere for your laptop and I was lucky enough to sit right next to one of a few energy sources. I was sat here for a couple of hours waiting for a friend and the place was consistently busy throughout the afternoon. I had a delicious and strong mug of their coffee of the day and a decadent donut from Lucky's. The donut was filled with a deliciously balanced pear and almond flavoured creme; not too sweet and just perfectly custard-y. This creme was encased in light donut goodness, dipped in glaze and sprinkled with almonds. Come get this donut! It was so wonderful, I was thinking about it days later...it makes me want to move back to Vancouver. read more

At 49th Parallel Main Street, first time. Absolutely stunning! Vince has raised the bar to another level. I'm very impressed with all the little details (bench seats on iron swing hinge, stained solid wood table top, old school iron pipes throughout the store, even the speakers look great!)....It is my ultimate wet dream to build and operate a store this caliber. (And therefore I'll keep on dreaming.) This store makes JJ Main Street looks like a pretentious condo pre-sale display office. And you can see it in the staffs. They all looked confident, professional and proud. With the boss around, I did not detect the slightest hint of hipster attitude. As usual, Vince runs a tight shift. In fact, he was the hardest working 49th crew. Hats off to that! I saw an order of iced americano waiting to be served at the counter. The way condensation built up on the thick traditional soda fountain glass made summer sizzles a few degrees lower. My old fashioned chocolate donut was absolutely delicious! So far this has been my favorite place to get coffee in Vancouver. Despite the fact that my boyfriend and I got into our first argument here over me squishing a spider on his white t-shirt, it's been nothing but good vibes and good coffee! The doughnuts are just alright, nothing so special that I'd need to come back every time I'm here to get my fix. But, the PB&J and glazed doughnuts were my favorite. It gets crowded, so finding a seat is sort of a hit or miss, but overall I'd definitely choose to get my coffee here over anywhere else if I'm in the area. read more
