You know, these days, there are a ton of good places to eat in Leelanau County - Mama Lu's, Jolly Pumpkin. That wasn't neccessarily the case 10 years ago when 45th Parallel Cafe was one of the only breakfast joints in the area, but it's time for a wake up call. The food was decent - not great, nothing special - but decent. Now let's talk about why this place gets one star: We get there at 11:10 AM for brunch today, a Thursday. We were told 10-15 minute wait for a table. Cool. We hung out in the candy shop. We got a table in about 10 minutes. That's where the wheels came off. We waited almost 10 minutes to be greeted by our server, a male who has worked there a long time and was obviously overwhelmed. He took our drink orders and after another 10 minutes, a young kid brought our drinks. 15-20 minutes in. The server unapologetically came and said 'What are we eating..." to which I regretably replied with our order. 48 MINUTES LATER we got our food. He did tell us 15 minutes before that about how the kitchen is behind, and I get that. Sometimes the kitchen gets behind. But it's all about how you handle it (with a visit by a manager). The food was decent, but I'm not really even sure. 1:22 after walking through the door I think I could have eaten anything. Not that it would have mattered - Our server never asked how the food tasted. We were geniunely curious as to whether we would receive a full bill, a discounted bill, or no bill as we waited way too long for the check. I'll admit, at this point, I was just pissed off and noticing more things that suck about the service here. He dropped off the check with no apology whatsoever and when he went to pick up payment I said, "Hey, I'm just curious - are you doing anything to take care of us after a 48 minute kitchen ticket?" Here is the response verbatim: "No, it just kind of is what it is... you know, it's a pretty busy cafe." "Really?" I said, "In my day if we couldn't handle the table we just went on a wait." "Well, then people get mad that they're waiting." "Okay, I suppose that's what yelp is for." He laughed but I don't think he got the joke. And that brings us to now. read more

The unparalleled skillet was indeed unparalleled. I've never felt more appreciated as a customer; the service was quick and courteous. There very well may be no better breakfast institution between the North Pole and equator. Delightful staff, quality flavor, and at a tremendous price! We were in the Leelanau Penninsula for a family wedding at a winery in the area. After we checked in to our accommodations, we stopped to grab a late lunch. We were greeted warmly and waited on quickly. The waitress made recommendations and was very pleasant. The food came out quicker than we anticipated and was more than we expected! We have a summer home in Suttons Bay. We come to this place for breakfast at least once a week all summer and fall. The owner (I think he is), always treats us as strangers, however I KNOW he recognizes we are regulars. Today was our LAST visit! We sat at the coffee bar to wait for a table and though NO ONE IS EVER seated at that area to eat, he approached us and asked we sit in the corner IN CASE he wants to sit someone at the bar. I understand if someone was being seated there, but they weren't. He's always unfriendly but today was the worst!! We will happily go to the VI where the staff remember us and are ALWAYS friendly. We will not go back, nor our friends, or family we have up all season long. read more

Had breakfast over the weekend. Was good, hot, and timely. Not sure I like their coffee, it just tasted different...like bad hotel coffee. Not sure if they changed it. If the owner is reading the review... you can change your eggs, bacon, or hash browns and no one will notice. It was the worst service I have ever had. The owner called our name once and because we weren't sitting on the benches right outside but were standing only five feet away, he sat another party, thus splitting up our group of 10 among two tables on different ends of the restaurant. It took 20 minutes for us to get our drink orders taken. The bacon was burnt, half our drink orders were forgotten and she never came to check on us and was rude! Our other table ended up having to wait for us for 30 minutes to get done. When I said I probably wouldn't return, the owner said "good! We don't want customers like you anyways" and proceeded to slam my card and pen on the counter for me to sign the receipt. I will never go to this place again nor ever recommend it to anyone! Visited this place on a Monday morning on my way out of town. Cute little server, and an okay breakfast burrito, but all 4 cups of coffee at the table were FILLED with grounds (like, total sludge--ugh) and we never got coffee or water refills. Been here several times for breakfast in the past year, but this morning's experience made me question why I would ever come back. I stopped in to get a cup of coffee to go (they do have good coffee) and was advised that there was a $5 minimum for a credit card purchase. Carrying no cash, I asked the owner (who was waiting on me) why they had the minimum and he took the cup of coffee intended for me and threw it into the nearby trash. He then proceeded to tell me that I had to drop the attitude of I would not get coffee or anything else. I'm not quite sure what he was referring to, I asked the question politely while I pondered if there was something else I could buy to up the purchase. After the owner poured out the coffee in the trash to demonstrate his superiority, all bets were off. For all of the money the 45th spends on attracting new customers, this rude gesture made me question why he couldn't come up with a viable solution to make a repeat customer happy. There are plenty of choices in Suttons Bay for breakfast. I'd recommend Martha's for those looking for an alternative. Also, what's up with small businesses in northern Michigan rural towns having restrictions or not accepting credit/debit cards at all? Since many people in this day and age do not carry cash and use credit or debit cards to track expenses, why deter their spending? Options like Square for merchant credit card acceptance eliminate the up charges on low ticket sales. read more

The food at the cafe was great! The best part was walking through the candy store whicjh is attached. What a great selection of unique and delicious candies and chocolate. My wife and kids had an extremely difficult time choosing which fudge to take home with us. All of it was so good we walked out with 7.5 lbs of fudge. We stopped by for breakfast on a Sunday morning in August. The outdoor seating was beautiful and there were three different servers handling the outdoor crowd. We had cappuccino, which was fine, the Thompson (eggs, peppers, ham, hashbrowns etc), and the unParalleled Skillet (eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, sausage gravy). Both were pretty good. Enjoyed both. Overall a great breakfast in a great location.
