Popped in during a downpour and was seated inside, but fortunately, we found outdoor seating on their covered patio and DOGS are allowed! We hung out w a 2 large boys (Grand Pyrenees and a mixed fluffy one) and on our other side was a Boxer... We very much enjoyed our server, Danny and his efforts to keep us entertained. If anyone asks, he's from Romania! Lol We enjoyed the wings, tots and cheese curds - they were so good! Four people were in our party. We went for breakfast . Breakfast was really good. I had biscuits & gravy with two eggs, my husband had the boredom breakfast My father in law had a ham & cheese omelette. However, my Mom ordered waffles - price $11.00 . Her waffles showed up two mini waffles with maple syrup & an oramge slice & a strawberry. Her food looked like it was for a child. That was a total ripoff - should have had three more mini waffles added to her plate. My husband said something to the waitress about the size of the waffles but she only said yes that's the size. Although we generally like this restaurant, we had a terrible meal there yesterday. The citrus salmon we ordered had obviously been pre-prepared, and sat under a heat lamp for quite a while. It was dry and tasteless. It seems like when two $32 ordered are placed, they should be prepared with care. But they weren't. It will be a long time before we return to VI Grill. Most of our party was happy with the food at VI Grill. Sadly my reuben was pretty tasteless and the bread was quite soggy. Chips came in a bag. Spent a few minutes picking out an app to share. We ordered the cheese curds, which were highlited on the menu. Oh, you're out of cheese curds? Why couldn't you tell us that when you handed us the menus? Other than not telling us about the cheese curds, our server was fine. The outside seating looks nice but can be a little noisy from the street traffic. Inside is ok. I cannot recommend this grill. The Reuben arrived with the bottom bread soggy and I could not eat it. The cheese curds were deep fried with all batter and very little cheese. But the worst part was the price, 2 entrees with nothing besides water to drink and it was $50+. when I ordered the Reuben she asked "if fries were ok , if not they had tots, sweet potato fries or cheese curds". Easily a 5 star review if things like that don't happen in front of customers. The burger was wonderful but the fries were a little cold. The restaurant is very warm and cozy. The outdoor bar was also warm. Overall it was a delightful little restaurant with good food. Many of the 4's could easily be 5's and I'm sure under non pandemic circumstances they are. We asked if we could sit at the bar, and waltzed right in. The wait staff was wonderful, and kind. But the food was only fine. I had Atlantic Cod with fries and my husband had the bean burger. DH had the chicken quesadilla and I had the hand cut fresh French fries and the bacon cheeseburger. The service was good, but we weren't offered refills of our soda and ice tea. DH dribbled some cheese and salsa and the server offer and provided some club soda so I hope not to have a major laundry issue. We were seated outside as first available opening. We heard good things about this restaurant so we stopped by on our way to leelanau State park. We had already eaten at the hotel so we didn't need much. We wanted a breakfast we could share. We ordered the avocado omelette which came with hash browns and toast. While ordering my wife and I were discussing what type of toast to order because I like rye and she likes raisen. Our waitress said she would bring out both types with our order (awesome!). There was more than enough food for the two of us and everything was fresh and tasty. I wish I was back there now getting some more! Note: The customer next to us got the biscuits and gravy that looked to-die-for (most likely home made). I think the bill came to a little over $14, it was a really good deal for two people. Afterwards, we shopped around the town for a while. If you're in Suttons Bay, I strongly recommend calling ahead to all places. I think everywhere is relatively short staffed and will require a wait, so it's definitely helpful to call ahead and see how long the wait is and/or if they take reservations. My group walked up and down downtown SB to check in on the handful of dinner places that were open on a weekday & VI Grill was the first place after we put our name down that could seat us, so we went. It's a standard issue bar/classic American food location, nothing all that special or remarkable about it. I didn't even take pictures, which is definitely a sign of the mediocrity. I ordered the steak frites, which I definitely would not recommend. The steak was overwhelmingly tough & flavorless, despite the fact that I ordered it medium rare. It was well done for the most part and even in the center I would describe it at best as medium well. It was not good and highly disappointing. What I did like about this place is that you could pay from your phone though by scanning the QR code on the receipt. That's very innovative. But all in all, very unremarkable & I will definitely be calling ahead to other places next time I'm in SB to avoid going here. read more
