424 walnut was way out of my comfort zone. Not because of the cuisine, but because it was in Sewickley! Sewickley to me is like Peru; far away and foreign. But we were meeting so family, so we braved the highways and bridges. We started with the crab stuffed artichokes. It comes in a lemony butter sauce and bread it dip. I love bread. And I love lemony butter sauces. And I really love bread in lemony butter sauces. I could have happily slurped that right outta the bowl. I went with something just on the cusp of daring for my entrée and ordered the chicken and penne. It was chicken with basil and prosciutto in a tomato cream sauce. It was so gooooood. The BF got the veal which came with veggies and some sort of potato. Veal not being one of my favs, I didn't try it, but considering the way he cleaned his plate with bread, I'll go ahead and say he loved it. Carla got the surf and turf which came with a crab cake and a steak the size of my head, and for those of you who don't know, I got a big ole' head! The steak was a pretty pink medium and fantastic. I didn't try the crab cake but she said they are wonderful. Matt, a true natural born raconteur, got the lamb shanks with prawns. That was one thing I found amazing about the menu; you could get things from a chicken salad or burger, to veal piccata to lamb shank with prawns. And everything was done well and delicious. In my experience, that's not easy for a restaurant to do. For the finale we got a key lime pie and bread pudding, for the table. I didn't try the pie, but the BF said it was phenomenal. The bread pudding, which I insisted I was too full to eat but then ate quite a bit of, was equally as phenomenal. So, I was a little skeptical coming to some little place 'in the middle of nowhere', but sometimes those little hole in the wall places are some of the best. As soon as we (my mom and I) came in the door the staff politely greeted us and brought us two a nice little booth. Throughout the entire course of the meal, the staff was attentive and proactive in checking on us to see if we were satisfied or needed any refills as well. And now I'll talk about the food. Here's what my mom thought: The Italian meatball soup was amazing and so filing. Also had the largest chicken Caesar salad which was also amazing. And to top it off a nice White Russian hit the spot. Great place, great food and wonderful service and staff! A must if you're visiting Sewickley!!! Called in for lunch takeout and was told they had a limited menu due to the shut down. Was craving a fish sandwich but opted for a burger. It was literally the best burger I've had in years, fries were great too. We had to eat it in the car and did so a few blocks away so it would still be hot. The food was pretty good, nice portions. Service was quick and friendly, but not very forthright with all of the up charges. We were given a choice of butter and sour cream or cheese and bacon with our baked potato. We were not told that was a $3 upcharge for the sprinkling of cheese and bacon, and the cheese was burnt. I have been a customer of 424 Walnut since they opened their doors and this place is my go-to in Sewickley. The front of the house (Joe) and head of the kitchen (Jimmy) make a dynamic duo to ensure excellent hospitality and quality Italian-American food. I have never had a dish that I didn't enjoy thoroughly including appetizers (get the banana peppers or beans and greens), main entrees (the airline chicken with risotto and crab cakes are my fav!) and desserts (the mascarpone cheesecake or the special of the evening). They have also won multiple awards for their homemade soups in the Sewickley Soup Crawl. The ingredients are quality and fresh, the seafood comes from Boston! For those expressing menu items are "pricey," I hear Long John Silver's has a seafood platter for you to enjoy instead. The menu items are appropriately priced for what you get, let alone portion sizes are huge! If you're in and around Sewickley, this gem is a must try. read more

I'm always very concerned when I see a restaurant that has reviews both positive and negative where the ownership does not respond or comment on Yelp. That said we had the occasion for 5 of us to visit this place for the first time based on Yelp reviews. We were greeted and seated promptly and our waiter was excellent. This place is very quaint and in a very nice area. Chose mostly from the special menu. Seafood pasta for me, others has prime rib,sausage and peppers, crab cakes. Nice selection of craft beers and wine. Food arrived hot and as ordered. We did notice we were not offered any bread, perhaps that is an up charge. As many others reviews mentioned there are many upcharges for most things other restaurants include. I don't like that. You are just nickel and diming your customers. Anyway, all the food was very good and tasty. I will tell you this, everything was a bit too salty. I would suggest telling them no or little salt. French fries were no eatable. Also the crab cake for the price, while good could be bigger. I know the owner would say yes but they are all crabmeat, never the less the cost doesn't justify the small cake. Good but I would not order it again because of serving size. Everything else was of very good portion size. The desserts were very food as well. One very negative thing that we found and others have mentioned. The bathroom was very dirty. There is no excuse for this ever. The owner is walking around asking how everything is, why don't you walk in the bath room every 30 minutes and clean as needed. This is a very poor reflection on your restaurant. You know the old saying, if the bathroom is dirty what is the kitchen like. Have some pride for an otherwise very nice quaint restaurant. Food is good, service was good. would have given them a 4, except waitress said the "special" mushroom bisque is $2 more than the regular $4 soup du jour . got the bill & she had lied. It was $7.50 for an 8oz cup, not $6 ... and so Spicy I couldn't eat it. That would make it $30 a quart!!!! Sorry... no soup is that "special".. Yesterday I decide to take my Fiancee to dinner for her birthday. I checked around for somewhere nice and found 424 Walnut. The reviews looked good, so I booked a reservation for 7pm. We arrived there around 6:30pm and after several minutes we were greeted by the owner. He looked around and told us it will be about 10 minutes before a table is free (he pointed to a high top by the bar were two people were currently sitting. Also there was probably 5 places open we could have easily sat). We were ok with that and sat at the bar right near the table he had referenced. Again it took some time after sitting down at the bar to get waited on. We ordered some drinks, at proceeded to wait for a table. Around 7pm I noticed one of the two high tops opened up and nobody had approached us to be seated. We stayed at the bar and watched the owner clean the same table again, and walk right by us. So at 7:25pm I payed the bar tab and we proceed leave and go to Sidelines were the service was excellent and the wings were great. I would love to write something about the food at 424, but we were never seated or served. I could maybe understand this is we just walked in but we had reservations. All I can say is the service is awful, and that is the service by the OWNER!! I guess you have to be one of his regulars to get any kind of service. Very disappointing!! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants to visit on a routine basis. The food is always excellent and the soups awesome. The crab cakes are incredible and the portions are very generous. We come here often for lunch or an early dinner, as we have 2 small children and like to go during the slower hours. We are always well taken care of and the owner stops by several times to make sure everything is good and that the kids are happy! I LOVE the grilled cajun chicken sandwich with the melted blue cheese on top, its to die for! And they have the best skinny french fries EVER. Passing through town and looked to Yelp for good spots to eat. We decided to try Walnut 424. The staff was very inviting and accommodating. They made us feel so welcome. Nice relaxed atmosphere and easy to get comfortable in decor. The food was excellent. Select cut Delmonico and truly perfect crab cakes. Generous size and no breading, just pure lump crab. My only complaint was that I like a traditional remoulade sauce and the chef serves a mustard based sauce. After hearing my request of our server, the owner came to the table and gave me his card. He said when I call and make reservation in the future, to request remoulade and they will have it waiting for me. Now how great is that ?!?! read more

As far as atmosphere it was fine, as far as service service was normal, it was good no complaints! Midway into our meal, a member of the kitchen staff came out and I overheard his conversation with another patron about dogs. Just wow. This restaurant is simply fantastic. I dined here Tuesday November 21, 2018. We started with the Chicken Pot Pie soup, and it was delicious. For my meal, I had the Roasted Chicken Risotto Rossa. The portion was huge, and everything was cooked perfectly. The two members of my dining party had different entrees and loved them. One had the stuffed salmon and the other had the portobello crab special. They raved about their meals. We learned from the owner that he hand selects his fish daily, even on the weekends. They also make all the desserts fresh, in-house daily. We split their mascarpone cheesecake, which was heavenly. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're anywhere near the Pittsburgh area. Excellent food. But don't expect superb service. Last time I tried to eat there my friends and I felt like we were inconveniencing them to seat us. The just redid the inside and it looked nice but the high top tables in the bar do not move so larger parties can't sit over there. And then it took 2 very annoyed servers to try and put 2 tables together. This process was very frustrating and took forever. It wasn't even busy when we walked it. The feeling we were getting was uncomfortable and we actually left and went to another restaurant locally. I guess we will stick to take out only there. read more

After leaving another local restaurant due to lack of service we ended up here (well after 7:30pm on a Wednesday night) and it was very nice. Food was very good and the waitress was very friendly and helpful. We had been on a plane the entire day and we needed to eat. Everyone was quite happy with their food. The bartender proceeded to roll her eyes and then proclaim "We don't do happy hour" then briskly walked away......I hear the place recently re-open under new ownership.
