We work just down the street from 401K and we're always on the lookout for a new place to try. Unfortunately, we were sadly disappointed. Texas is known for BBQ. If you're going to bill yourself as a BBQ joint, you better deliver. There was no smoke ring to be found on the sliced brisket. Thankfully, my meal came with sauce to give the brisket some flavor since it was lacking any smoke and tasted more like it just came out of an oven. As always I got the brisket and ribs, and decided to try the potato salad. They made it pretty easy with a simple menu! The ribs were different than what I'm use to. Definitely follow off the phone and great flavor. There wasn't a typical bark that you would see on the ribs, and almost reminded me of the thin layer texture I'd see on a fried pork dish. The brisket didn't have a large bark either, but maintained a good texture and required just a little bit of BBQ sauce. This is some of the best BBQ my family and I have ever had! Everything was hot, fresh, tender and juicy. They gave us a free sample of their brisket chili and it's the best chili I've ever eaten! We got that, loaded potatoes with turkey, some two-meat plates, mac and cheese and BBQ beans. It was so good I went back within the hour to get another plate, peach cobbler and banana pudding. We were craving some BBQ in the middle of a day of shopping, and 401k popped up in our Google search. We love to try little one-off places since they usually have the best food, and headed down Plano Pkwy to 401k. The turn is easy to miss! We actually had to back up a little to make the turn because we almost went right past. The shack is in the lot of a garden center type business. Parking is open, which was a little confusing but at least there is somewhere to park, right? It was pretty chilly that day, so there was no one else there when we arrived, although 2 other orders were placed while we were there. The menu is very simple, and very reasonably priced. We got brisket (lean), turkey, spicy sausage, and beans, potato salad, and cole slaw. Everything except the turkey was exceptionally good! The brisket was something special, and it was so tender it turned to chopped brisket if you touched it with a fork! The sausage was some of the best we've had as well. Skip the turkey, it had a rubbery texture and very little flavor. It was better after sitting in a pool of bbq sauce in the fridge for a few days, lol. Don't come here in a hurry, cause even though they were not busy it took a good 15 minutes or so before our plates were ready. That wouldn't seem like very long, but it's bbq, so it's already cooked...plus it wasy pretty cold and there is only outside seating. Anyway, I think we've found our new spot whenever we are up by NFM! They have very limited hours, so be aware they are only open on weekends. read more

I got a sliced brisket sandwich (they were very generous with the brisket) with chips and I waited maybe 5 minutes before I got my food. I'm always interested to check out a new BBQ joint. Found this one last Saturday when I was looking for food to bring in for a party. First off- don't blink or you'll certainly miss it! This is literally a tiny shack. Maybe better described as a box in a parking of another business. So keep your eyes peeled for the Hebron Gardens Nursery business. Ordering- I called ahead to order meats for the group. I was a little concerned as I didn't know how much to order and the lady taking the order didn't give me much direction. When I got there and saw how much meat I had ordered I immediately ordered more as what she had suggested didn't look like enough. Fortunately they sliced more up and I got it lickety-split. They added more sauce and buns and were friendly enough about it. Price- seemed about normal for a BBQ joint. Not cheap like fats food and not overpriced at all. Food- Exxxxxcellent. The best find I've had in several year!!! I highly recommend grabbing some food from here. You like BBQ - You need to try this place and see what you think. No real frills and not much non-meat variety. And when the meats are gone you are just plum out of luck. But for a tiny shack on the side of the road it's what you would expect. Think Ron Swanson approach to eating! Scenery- I guess it would be considered backroads vibe since your only option is to eat at the outside tables in the gravel parking lot...or at home for take out. Could be pretty hot and steamy or wet and rainy depending on the weather. So I'd be cautious on bringing any groups here. This is the only thing holding back the 5th Star. And while they maybe don't want to build out more to make it more eater-friendly (I can understand keeping it simple) I could still see where some simply improvements would easily "up" the on-site dining a huge amount. Final Thoughts- the only negative is that this place is ONLY open 2 (Yes TWO) days a week. You got Friday or Saturday and that's it!!!! Now I can't ding them a star for that because I support people running their business the hours and days they want. And by the name of it they are doing it for fun/passion and to fund a lifestyle. So thumbs up to them. But C'mon 401K BBQ - give us the MEATS!!!! Hire some respectable 4H or NHS high schooler to dish out some goods in the evenings every once in awhile! This. Is. Good. I've passed this place for years and tried it today after several recommendations. I will say they are very generous with their portions and the service was very nice. The brisket wasn't my favorite as it didn't seem to have much flavor. I also tried the sausage and it was just ok about like a store brand smoked sausage. Nothing stood out to me. Their BBQ sauce is a little thinner than most and has a heavy liquid smoke taste. It is not sweet which is what I did like about it. I would like to try their ribs and pork butt. Let me say up front that I wish I could award half stars, because this would be three and a half stars. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (hwy 276 outside of Rockwall), there was a little barbecue shack called Oscar's. Oscar was about 147 years of age, and had been smoking brisket for most of those years. Many of us were devastated when the little shack burned down, and Oscar chose to not rebuild. He had one of the best chopped beef sandwiches in East Texas. For years now, I have searched far and wide for something like Oscar's and found it almost under my own nose. 401K is just a shack, on a pea gravel lot just off Hebron. You have to be looking to find it. My son and I went there Friday and tried. It. Son had the pulled pork sandwich, and I had the sliced brisket. For six dollars you can get a sandwich, a bag of chips, and a mini Oreo pack. My son said that the pulled pork was good but not spectacular. The brisket sandwich was ... Oscar's! The sandwich was flavorful and large, more than enough to satisfy. Their menu is not extensive. It is all about the meat. Don't misunderstand me here. You can get better barbecue, but you would have to go to Pecan Lodge, Lockhart's, or Cattleack. This is very much old school Texas barbecue. I admit that I am perhaps awarding points for nostalgia, but the value here and the taste are outstanding. I can hardly wait until this next weekend when I can take my wife ... I've passed by 401k many times, and today I was finally able to give it a try. They're only open Fridays and Saturdays 11a-5:30p, so I won't have to worry about overindulging in eating here everyday. But I would if I could- it's that good! The prices are a steal for the amount of quality food you get. $6 for a sandwich loaded with meat and chips?! I'm with it. The hot links are perfectly spicy, the ribs are huge, the sausage is flavorful, and the bread is fresh. There are only two sides offered here- potato salad and baked beans. The beans were alright, but the potato salad was my favorite. They Saran Wrap the to go boxes to ensure that you don't have a huge bbq mess in the car, but I still advise asking for the sauce on the side as it is a little runny. It doesn't take long for your order to be ready, and they have tables with umbrellas to enjoy your meal at if the weather's nice. This is a tiny little place just off of Marsh and Hebron and I must have driven by hundreds of times. Overall, it is pretty average bbq. I will start with the good. The sausage and turkey were good. Neither tasted like they were smoked but they still tasted good and were nice and juicy. Now for the bad, I ordered moist brisket and it was dry with absolutely no bark or smoked flavor. The ribs also had no rub that I could taste. IMO... the ribs were horrible. Overall the staff was nice and everything was quick and clean. But it is not bbq that would draw me to return. read more

Came here during lunch on a Friday and was pretty excited based on the reviews. My coworkers and I got everything to go. Prices are very good for the amount of food you get....but....the bbq itself is nothing to really write home about. I got the sliced brisket sandwich. Normally, I ask for moist brisket since fat=flavor. My sandwich was meh. The meat wasn't what I would call "moist" or very flavorful. The bark was practically non-existent and was barely what many would call "smokey." A coworker of mine let me taste her sausage sandwich. Sausage was much better than the brisket and was very flavorful. A different coworker ordered the two meat platter with brisket and sausage. She received brisket and ribs instead. After one bite of the ribs, she gave them away. "Yuck" was what she said. Rolling my eyes, I took one of the ribs, which were fall off the bone tender, and gave it a bite. I wouldn't say "yuck," but I would say "meh." Ribs were, unbelievably, just as bland as the brisket. Very underseasoned, no bark, no flavor. I really hate writing these types of reviews. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day? Either way, I'm hesitant to try them again, but for the amount of food you get for the price, they get two stars. read more
