Tried HEB BBQ for the first time after walking by so many times. It was honestly a pleasant surprise. I'm grading it based on what I'd expect from a grocery store vs from a premium BBQ restaurant. They have lots of options and you can choose to order ahead if you want to shop first which is nice. Got the two meat plate with fatty brisket and burnt ends and sides of fried okra and collared greens. The fatty brisket was very moist and had a vibe smoky flavor. Burnt ends were pretty moist and flavorful as well. A slight step below what you'd get at a place like Hutchins despite being around 50% cheaper. As of today, it's $29/lb for brisket vs Hutchins which is up to $40/lb. The sides were decent. I liked that they had lots of options including desserts and veggies that you don't always see. The fried okra was a large portion but was easy over salted otherwise would've been great. Definitely a great option for some delicious BBQ at a great value and super convenient combined with a shopping trip to HEB. read more

Having eaten at my share and counting locations of True Texas BBQ across the state, I decided to grab a bite at the spot inside the Plano H-E-B on Preston Road. The standout of the meal was undoubtedly the moist brisket. It was incredibly tender, perfectly smoked, and packed with flavor. Every bite practically melted, proving once again that their pitmasters really know what they are doing when it comes to slow-smoked beef.  For sides, the sidewinder potatoes were absolutely delicious--crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and seasoned just right. Unfortunately, the macaroni and cheese didn't quite reach those same heights. It wasn't bad, but it was fairly average compared to the rest of the plate, a bit routine and lacking that rich, extra-cheesy punch you hope for at a Texas joint. As for the service, it was totally fine. The staff got me through the line efficiently and everything was handled correctly. That said, while the service here is never bad, it isn't quite as over-the-top friendly or hyper-attentive as what I've experienced at some of the other True Texas BBQ locations. read more

Texas BBQ in H-E-B on Preston is awesome. I've been there a number of times and each time I am very happy with my food. Now, it is not a Texas BBQ landmark. However, for the price, convenience, and taste, I think it is well worth it. The El Jefe sandwich for example is HUGE! It comes with a half pound of brisket and a sausage and for the whole thing it's only $18. That is a very reasonable price for good BBQ. That to me is what puts it up to 4 stars, other BBQ places you can't leave without spending ~$100 for the same amount of food. Ordered a chopped beef baker with jalapeños and a drink. It was bone dry with no jalapeños and no drink. They argued that it was not on the order, but my receipt said otherwise. I stopped by HEB yesterday and decided to give their BBQ a try. I picked up 1lb of fatty brisket and 1/2 rack of ribs. You have the choice of ordering brisket lean or fatty. Fatty usually has more flavor so I went with that. The brisket was good and flavorful. It wasn't the best brisket but better than some. Moist, tender but no smoke ring. I would give the brisket a C. The St. louis ribs were on another level. Absolutely delicious. The ribs were meaty and fall off the bone tender. Seasoned perfectly. The ribs were an A. It came with a small container of onions and pickles and you can fill small containers with BBQ sauce. Definitely worth it. Drive through facility connected to a HEB. Ordered a sandwich and onion rings. When you order a "specialty" side, you have to wait which means they are making it on the spot. The onion rings were good, but a bit greasy. The sandwich had brisket inside of it and it was pretty fatty. Other than that, the sandwich was good and added the bbq sauce which made it better. Unfortunately the bread was soggy by the time I got to eat, so it was a knife and fork meal. The server was nice and not rude. No Contact or help at front counter! When my order was called guy at counter did not acknowledge me and I got my food myself and then had to get his attention to get my drink cup. I paid for a 22 oz cup but was given a 16 oz cup. After getting fountain drink, BBQ sauce and napkins, I picked a table. I stopped to pick up lunch on 6/26 at the Little Elm location near 380. I ordered the 3 meat plate with ribs, brisket and smoked sausage. My sides were potato salad and cole slaw. It took about 15 minutes to get my food and I was the only one in line. There may have been people in the drive thru but I do not know. Now for the food. The ribs were tough and gristly. The brisket was great, super tender, and not dry at all. The sausage I can't give an opinion on as there was no sausage to be found. The cole slaw was good. The potato salad was bland and flavorless. They also forgot my bread, but when I saw it wasn't in the bag, they remedied that oversight. And don't get me wrong, it was bread, not toast or a roll as you would expect from a BBQ place. I got 3 rib bones, 3 slices of brisket and no sausage. A rather small portion of potato salad and cole slaw. 4 slices of bread and a healthy portion of pickles. The total price was just short of $32. We picked up a large order ($75+) for a 4th of July gathering. Went to the Plano location on Preston/Spring Creek. While the food was good, we were very disappointed because they gave us NO pickles, peppers and onions and only gave us three very small containers of bbq sauce. Luckily, we noticed this before we left the store. However, we did not notice they gave us NO bread for this order until after we were home and our guests had arrived. I encourage everyone to ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Dickey's did this to us many times before and now True Texas is doing it. They will never be confused with some of the more famous Hill Country digs with dyed-in-the-wool pit masters. If the three items ordered, only the torpedos disappointed. The sausage exterior was rubbery. The cheesesteak was amazing. The use the tip, rather than the flat, and it worked perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. The brisket melted in our mouths. I'd put the his BBQ up against any other BBQ in Texas and it would win hands down! Went yesterday and it was so good that I brought the whole family with me today. The lean sliced biscuit was moist and full of flavor, plus it has a delicious sweet peppery charred crust. Love their BBQ sauce too. Thick enough to stick, with a sweet bold flavor. The people there who who work at the counter and in the kitchen are all very nice, so the service was great. The ambience is Texas country. Gotta love it. This place is terrible. We tried to get a takeout meal last Friday night. They were out of baked potatoes at 600pm on a Friday night. The place just screams mismanagement. We could not get the takeout order person to turn around and affirm our existence. He was too busy guzzling his drink. Their bbq sandwich tasted like a "manwich sandwich". Customer service needs some help. The individuals do not seem to care and understand the value of good customer service. no hello, no motivation, no acknowledgement. Then my order, thank goodness I checked in the bag. My pounds of meat came with side as it clearly states on the food ticket, pickles, onions, bread, and BBQ sauce. I had to ask for all of that like they did not read the food ticket. This was not up to H-E-B standards. There should be someone to hold them accountable for good customer service. I've been here before and tried a few things. Pulled Pork Sandwich - The sandwich is a nice size. The meat is flavorful and they use nice buns. Sometimes they are a little skimpy on the meat but no issues overall. Half Chicken - I love the chicken. The size is great, it's flavorful, and cheaper than competitors. I do wish it had more of a smokey flavor. Mac n Cheese - This dish needs some work in my opinion. It consolidates and turns into one big mush. It also needs more flavor. Bbq Sauce - I don't really care for it. The tangy flavor takes away from it. FYI, the drive through is SUPER slow and parking can be tough to go inside. Overall, 3 stars. read more

Located in the H E B Grocery store near the front is this BBQ restaurant. Like several other grocery stores, they are trying to cash in customers. HyVee in the north has opened up several restaurants within the food store. Offering Carry out, drive through service as well as dine in. One gets to wait in line to place your order and I arrived after 7:30 PM on a Wednesday evening. I was number twelve in line and one person was taking orders. Based on the volume of customers, one would think they would have more people working the front counter. You make your selection from the menu board and make payment. I ordered two regular sliced Brisket sandwichs. Along with a glass of water. The Metroplex was experiencing 30 days with no rain and the vehicle temp gauge was 111. Yeah it was hot. Dine in food is served in aluminum trays and you are responsible for getting your condiments and finding a clean area to eat. Many of the tables were dirty. After a short wait, my name was called. The issue a customer behind me placed the order except theirs was to go. Caused confusion at the moment. They were out of one of the two BBQ sauces and asking for the container to be filled was not addressed during my visit. My water cup was not given to me at the time I placed my order. Had to go back as ask for one. The cup was on the smaller size. More of a childrens cup. Food temperature was OK. Bread was toasted but not warm. Love this place. They have the best fatty brisket in town. It's always tender and the bark is great. Not too sweet- more a salty savory bark. Now, the pork ribs on the other hand have a very sweet rub on them - they were fantastic & delicious but it was a mistake on my part. They gave me a headache a few mins after I left. I am not used to sugar anymore! I assume it was the sugar in the rub... But I am not so well at the moment. So if you're a meat eater/ carnivore lifestyler... YES TO THE BRISKET AND no to the pork ribs. The atmosphere is always good here. I order ahead and it's ready by the time I arrive and they keep it warm up til the time you grab it.
