Tried HEB BBQ for the first time after walking by so many times. It was honestly a pleasant surprise. I'm grading it based on what I'd expect from a grocery store vs from a premium BBQ restaurant. They have lots of options and you can choose to order ahead if you want to shop first which is nice. Got the two meat plate with fatty brisket and burnt ends and sides of fried okra and collared greens. The fatty brisket was very moist and had a vibe smoky flavor. Burnt ends were pretty moist and flavorful as well. A slight step below what you'd get at a place like Hutchins despite being around 50% cheaper. As of today, it's $29/lb for brisket vs Hutchins which is up to $40/lb. The sides were decent. I liked that they had lots of options including desserts and veggies that you don't always see. The fried okra was a large portion but was easy over salted otherwise would've been great. Texas BBQ in H-E-B on Preston is awesome. I've been there a number of times and each time I am very happy with my food. Now, it is not a Texas BBQ landmark. However, for the price, convenience, and taste, I think it is well worth it. The El Jefe sandwich for example is HUGE! It comes with a half pound of brisket and a sausage and for the whole thing it's only $18. That is a very reasonable price for good BBQ. That to me is what puts it up to 4 stars, other BBQ places you can't leave without spending ~$100 for the same amount of food. Fatty usually has more flavor so I went with that. The brisket was good and flavorful. It wasn't the best brisket but better than some. Moist, tender but no smoke ring. I would give the brisket a C. The St. louis ribs were on another level. Absolutely delicious. The ribs were meaty and fall off the bone tender. Seasoned perfectly. The ribs were an A. It came with a small container of onions and pickles and you can fill small containers with BBQ sauce. Definitely worth it. Drive through facility connected to a HEB. Ordered a sandwich and onion rings. When you order a "specialty" side, you have to wait which means they are making it on the spot. The onion rings were good, but a bit greasy. The sandwich had brisket inside of it and it was pretty fatty. Other than that, the sandwich was good and added the bbq sauce which made it better. Unfortunately the bread was soggy by the time I got to eat, so it was a knife and fork meal. The server was nice and not rude. They will never be confused with some of the more famous Hill Country digs with dyed-in-the-wool pit masters. If the three items ordered, only the torpedos disappointed. The sausage exterior was rubbery. The cheesesteak was amazing. The use the tip, rather than the flat, and it worked perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. The brisket melted in our mouths. The only downside to this item is the board said it was a limited time item. Finally, the nachos were huge all well-proportioned. I'd put the his BBQ up against any other BBQ in Texas and it would win hands down! Went yesterday and it was so good that I brought the whole family with me today. The lean sliced biscuit was moist and full of flavor, plus it has a delicious sweet peppery charred crust. Love their BBQ sauce too. Thick enough to stick, with a sweet bold flavor. I've been here before and tried a few things. Pulled Pork Sandwich - The sandwich is a nice size. The meat is flavorful and they use nice buns. Sometimes they are a little skimpy on the meat but no issues overall. Half Chicken - I love the chicken. The size is great, it's flavorful, and cheaper than competitors. I do wish it had more of a smokey flavor. Mac n Cheese - This dish needs some work in my opinion. It consolidates and turns into one big mush. It also needs more flavor. Located in the H E B Grocery store near the front is this BBQ restaurant. Like several other grocery stores, they are trying to cash in customers. HyVee in the north has opened up several restaurants within the food store. Offering Carry out, drive through service as well as dine in. One gets to wait in line to place your order and I arrived after 7:30 PM on a Wednesday evening. I was number twelve in line and one person was taking orders. Based on the volume of customers, one would think they would have more people working the front counter. You make your selection from the menu board and make payment. I ordered two regular sliced Brisket sandwichs. Along with a glass of water. The Metroplex was experiencing 30 days with no rain and the vehicle temp gauge was 111. Yeah it was hot. Dine in food is served in aluminum trays and you are responsible for getting your condiments and finding a clean area to eat. Many of the tables were dirty. After a short wait, my name was called. The issue a customer behind me placed the order except theirs was to go. Caused confusion at the moment. They were out of one of the two BBQ sauces and asking for the container to be filled was not addressed during my visit. My water cup was not given to me at the time I placed my order. Had to go back as ask for one. The cup was on the smaller size. More of a childrens cup. Food temperature was OK. Bread was toasted but not warm. Good size piece of fat, my thinking is either sell it, or you get to haul it out to the dumpster. Based on the meat, I would say it is all by weight. No reason to return. read more

Our family orders a Family Meal (4) from Dickeys at least once a month, but decided to go off course and try the drive-thru BBQ from our beloved HEB while waiting for our grocery pickup to be ready. We ordered the family meal. It is 10 less than Dickey's. The only choice for the brisket was either fatty or lean and the other 1lb was Turkey. Disappointed as we love ordering a lb of chopped and a lb of sliced briskit from Dickeys. No biggie the sliced was good and even the turkey was nice but just SUPER SALTY. My kids had to cut off the edges due to the saltiness. The sides were mixed. The greens were AMAZING!!!! The mac/cheese was kid perfection, but the beans were runny soup. Great seasoning, but if you could strain the beans out of their watery abode, you might get a 1/3 cup of beans w/ a large side order. The bread? We got two pieces of skinny white bread as the bread. We really could have used a loaf to sop up all the runny bean juice. Plenty of pickle and onion slices. Also got a free gallon of tea. BBQ sauce. We got two tiny lil pre packaged maybe 2 0z total. NOT near enough for 2lbs of BBQ. When the guy handed me the food through the window, I new immediately this was a mistake, there was GREASE pooling in the bottom of the plastic bag he had packed everything in. YUK. By the time we got home the paper wrapped meats were wet. 2 sets of plastic wear, 3 clean wipes and 4 small napkins. HEB - you've let me down with this poorly executed bbq. Besides bland taste, the burnt ends were just chunks of fat. BBQ were ok. Hoped to be able to tatter the cornbread, but after a long wait for my order, they came to the window to say they are out of cornbread, asking if I want a different side. Nothing else I wanted so asked for refund on the cornbread. He said he could give me a refit fur next time - no thanks, just a refund. The best things was the strawberry lemonade, the butter (almost taste like the cream cheese on a Cinnabon) they put on the spicy cornbread and of course the ice!
