The Black Pearl is delicious ESPECIALLY with the Kikkoman Soy Sauce. I highly recommend The Black Pearl as a Vegan sushi option (make sure to request the Vegan option since the meal of/on the 39 Degrees menu is originally Vegetarian) without a slimy avocado texture (I like avocado though the texture is not always pleasant in sushi, to me). In my experience, customer service is on point. I think the pricing is decent, and Happy Hour sushi prices look even better. The establishment accepts Samsung Pay. read more

This place is clean and very friendly but wanted to make a quick little pros and cons list. Pros - parking in the back, side and street parking - friendly staff - quick seating (we got there around 3pm though) Cons - food is okay, the flavor is good but I couldn't stop comparing it to my favorite sushi spot, also located in long Beach - my drink was given to me when I was halfway done with my meal We ordered a Sunrise roll, tsunami roll, and sumo roll with hot sake. read more

Portions and quality at this price point is crazy! I can't believe we got so much sashimi for like $40. Super worth it. The fish was fresh and tender. My friends ordered the happy hour special, which is like a bunch of dishes for a fair price. But it's not just quantity but also quality here. Would definitely come back since we are often in the area. Asked the server why the restaurant is called 39 degrees and he said he didn't know cause it was his first day here The service was prompt and good though! The service was great. Everybody working there was attentive. It wasn't only our server that checked on us. All the staff chipped in to check on their customers. They have a parking lot, which made our decision of where to eat easier. Their sushi was great. We tried everything from their Edamame, Udon soup, Chicken dish, to Sushi plates. AMAZING food and service! There are plenty of options when it comes to appetizers, entries, and rolls, as well as a variety of stuff for vegans and vegetarians. The sushi felt really fresh. I don't know about you, but I just have my go to rolls I try to get it every restaurant... I didn't see what I usually get there, but they more than willing to make my requests (wow what a snob) I got the garlic edamame and it was really good. The miso soup was good. It wasn't as salty as usual It's a little pricey for my go to spot, but I would definitely try it again. And I would definitely try to get one of their lunch specials read more

Found myself in the area and craving sushi. Pulled out Yelp and 39 Degrees came out on top. I was excited to eat here given the positive reviews of other Yelpers. I found there to be a big disconnect between the typical review and my experience. The restaurant is clean, welcoming and the quality of service is high. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming. The sashimi platter had almost zero taste - it was like eating bland white fish that had food coloring and suddenly became tuna. The rolls were solid but only because the sauces added flavor the fish did not have. I think there are better places to get inexpensive sushi. I don't think I'll come back. read more

Due to the plethora of positive reviews I had high expectations for 39 Degrees, and suggested to my friend that we meet here for dinner. There are plenty of tables, a sushi bar, and a parking lot in back. The restaurant was clean, and we were promptly attended to. I liked that Happy Hour ends at 7pm, and you can order from it as long as you're seated by 7. We placed our order, and they tape a receipt with your order to your table, crossing items off as they're delivered. It was a bit annoying that they forgot one item for a while and would consistently come back to the table and ask if we were missing anything, when you could see it on the receipt. The food was tasty, but I wasn't overly impressed. My favorite was the Gyoza. It was flavorful and packed full. The flavor of the Udon broth was good, and it was a filling portion but the noodles were overcooked and very soft. I went with the Caribbean Roll: asparagus tempura inside, salmon, masago, and white onion on top with a Thai-style custard dressing which I took on the side. The salmon on top was too warm, so it sort of grossed me out and the raw onions were really intense. We ended our meal with the Green Tea Creme Brulee which was fantastic! They have a large variety of rolls and other options, so I wouldn't be opposed to giving them another try. My friend enjoyed her rolls. read more

39 degrees is my reliable spot when I am craving sushi and my GO TO spot is closed. Overall, the food presentation and preparation reads as "no frills" like some joints, but the quality of the fish is good. I recommend trying to get here during a "happy hour". I think they used to have multiple during the day at different times. Still the prices are pretty comparable to some of the better sushi places I've been so I feel a little less willing to give up major cash here. That said, I do come back to this place often enough as it is close and I can count on them. Special note: they do a special birthday celebration and it is both charming and a bit dismal at the same time. read more

Some of the freshest sushi I've ever had, large portions and fair to cheap prices for the quality of the seafood and the portions served. This place is very popular in the community, with its small interior and busy pace, it was out the door on my recent visit with folks signing up to get in line. There's a greeter at the front door and a clipboard to sign on. The Yellowtail roll is was simply divine, beyond fresh delicious and generous, as was the smoked albacore sashimi these are both worth noting. If you like tuna these are great choices. The Sunset on Second roll is delicious and a generous 8 pieces again super fresh crab and a spicy shrimp all topped with awesome beautifully sliced tuna. It is delicious and filling. A real standout and a new favorite is the Calamari salad its so good and by far one of my favorite versions of calamari to date, this salad alone could be a meal by itself, and a $5 bucks a bargain, so much so you might as well get two! I order takeout for lunch I've been an I Luv Sushi fan since the restaurant open and I've been to 39 degrees several times and honestly I am disappointed with the roll it was so nasty I only ate one bite and spit it out! The tempura shrimp was old and stale and it was a total disappointment to me! I will never order takeout and I probably never go back sad to say this! Only thing that made it better was the cucumber salad with imitation crab meat. If it wasn't for that it probably be a zero stars read more

Great selection of vegan sushi. Most sushi places just roll up a piece of cucumber and call it a day, here at 39 degrees they have a bunch of creative rolls. My favorite is the "Shroom Shroom" which has shitake mushroom tempura and Japanese mint inside the roll and topped with avocado, wasabi mayo sauce, and sweet soy sauce. Simple yet so much flavor. The mint is an odd pairing that pairs up perfectly! I also had the "Black Pearl" which has black tofu, asparagus, and gobo inside. It was topped with mustard greens, sesame dressing, and sweet soy sauce. Never seen mustard green on sushi before and now I wish more places use it! No clue what "black tofu" is. Sure it had a black look to it but it just tasted like tofu to me. Still, very good roll. My wife had the "Tofulicous" roll which had asparagus and avocado inside and topped with a slab of fried tofu, sesame dressing, and sweet soy sauce. It was good but I liked the flavors of the Black Pearl roll better. She also had a Philly Roll which had a nice amount of salmon and cream cheese. Friendly service, good food, decent amount of seating. My only issue is the parking. It's nice they have a parking lot which is rare in Long Beach but it's L shaped with a dead end. Once you pull in and find no parking you have a big risk of getting stuck. It's like playing a game of Tetris with cars trying to get out of there. Luckily my wife had a temporary handicap placard which got us a spot but it was painful watching stuck people try to figure out how to leave the parking lot. read more

Food is outstanding! Location near my home. One bad encounter with suck azz waiter and I am done. I came in to grab carry out as I have been doing over the years. I called from the parking lot to verify that my order was ready. I came in to pick up my food. I was greeted in a very awkward and unwelcoming way by a male server. "May I help you?" He said. To me it felt like he did not feel that I belong there. I know. How did I read all of that from "May I help you?" It was just a feeling. I figured that I read him wrong. He grabbed my food from the back. Showed it to me, I gave him a card. The server then turn around and placed my food on a table about 3 feet behind him and 5 feet in front of me. He then walked parallel to me to my left to run my card. So now he is too about 5 feet from my food. I thought to myself, maybe he does not have enough room to sit my near him. I also thought maybe he wanted my near the CC machine. I also thought that maybe, he placed the food on the table so my hands would be free so I can sign my receipt. I am really not sure, but after I signed the receipt and he handed me my card he then told me that I may go to the table 5 feet away from me to grab my food. I told him no, hand my food to me. He smiled walked his azz over to the table 5 ft from us grab my food and handed it to me. So was it bad service? Or could it be some small time racial profiling? Either way it really does not matter. We will take our sushi habits to a location that food and service is deserving of our $$$. read more

Established in 2012.

The owners, Paul and Kay have work in a Japanese restaurant business since 1994. In 2003, he opened Sushi Studio in Long Beach, CA (of which he is no longer an owner since March of 2013). In 2008, he and his wife, Kay open I Luv Sushi in Lakewood, Ca. Their motto has always been great quality and great service. The number 39 in the name pronounce "San-Kyu" in Japanese. Which sounds like "Thank You". We want to thank you everyone that support us and we hope to be your favorite sushi restaurant in Long Beach for many years to come.

The hand roll was elegant, fresh, and delicious. I loved the seaweed. The Spicy Scallop was my favorite because of the quality ingredients and value. It was definitely spicy. The TNT Roll was amazing, but I had to remove the Jalapeño due to it kicking my ass. I'll definitely return because I had an exciting experience.

About 1-2 minutes later they offered to combine a third table to "reroute" the server path and we were able to eat with my child. Server and rest of staff were great and turned the experience around. Food was delicious including octopus fire, bluefin tuna tasting , Ginza Maki roll , Bixby Roll and the Acebichado. We were so hungry we didn't get to take a picture but that alone should tell you how good it was.

Went here for dinner with the girlfriend, since she was craving sushi. This will be a review geared towards the non-sushi fans fyi. So if you really love sushi, you can ignore this and head over to the next review. We were promptly seated when we entered. The place was a little packed for a Thursday night, especially the sushi bar, so we opted for a quieter spot at the tables. If you're looking for someplace intimate, this would not be it since the tables nearby are right up next to you. They did have bamboo dividers that they would place between tables, but you can still easily eavesdrop on the next couple's conversation. My girlfriend is celiac, but the waitress was very accommodating and seemed to have a basic knowledge of "gluten-free." She was able to answer questions about whether any of the rolls had soy sauce in it, which has gluten, and even set on the table a bottle of gluten-free soy sauce. My girlfriend went with the candy-cane roll, and a plate of nigiri and a tuna hand roll. I sampled the candy-cane roll, and it was quite delicious, with a little bit of mayo and a fishy taste that was not too overpowering. For myself, I settled with the tonkatsu dinner entree, my go-to dish whenever I do Japanese. I loved it! For one thing, they served the tonkatsu sauce separately instead of slathered all over the pork. I hate it when restaurants do that because it ruins the crispiness of the tonkatsu. The breading was excellent, and the pork was soft and cooked really well. I wasn't struggling too much with having to bite through each piece. Cut-size for tonkatsu is very important to me, and it was cut appropriately, perfect for holding in-between my chopsticks and biting through. Overall, a pleasant dining experience. The noise factor knocked off a bit from the score, but we weren't expecting anything intimate anyways. Also, parking can be a bit of an issue. It's located in a very small strip small that has a Starbucks, and I'm pretty sure a majority of the cars parked there were getting their java fix. First time will be the last. And that is to put it nicely. I was there with my girlfriend celebrating her birthday. As I was paying the $145.00 bill (just for the two of us), I clearly heard an employee, one of the four sushi chefs, make the most Disgusting, Offensive, Rude, and Absolutely 100% Uncalled for comment aimed directly at my girlfriend. It came from a wannabe sushi chef named Bryan. This insult was so ugly, means spirited, and unprovoked that it literally Shocked me. I turned and looked at my girlfriend in disbelief, praying that she didn't hear what I had. Unfortunately, it was obvious that she had. My first instinct was to defend my girlfriend, and teach him the manners his mother obviously didn't. I instead confronted him verbally in front of other employees and customers, demanding an apology. I first called him over and asked his name. He answered "Brian". He was visibly shaking and could hardly speak. He couldn't look me in the eyes, only down at the ground. He knew he just got busted. Badly. Knowing that I'm pissed and considering knocking him out, he quickly acknowledged and apologized for his inappropriate and abusive behavior he aimed at an innocent and undeserving customer of his workplace. This disgrace to the human race, Brian, deserves to be fired. If he were to make the same insulting comment to some other mans girlfriend, that guy might not have been able to remain as calm and level head as I did. Stopped by this local spot to grab some sushi. They did not disappoint! I ordered the Chef's Choice sushi plate and an order of shrimp tempura. Everything was great. I watched as they carefully sliced the fresh fish and form the rice balls by hand. The menu shows a lot of options on their lunch menu that are nicely priced. The parking can be an issue. It's in a small strip center and parking can be a challenge. I wrote review few month ago only because i think this is good place. Then, having dinner i have seen sign: free ice cream with your yelp review. I was not up to ice cream that day, so i said to myself: ok, another hot summer day i will redeem ice cream. No, you will not! I found it on my iphone and showed to waitress. She said : no, only if posted now. So, if you decided to review this place, wait until you will be in a mood for ice cream, or will not get it. This is a great spot if you happen to find yourself craving sushi while in the downtown long beach area. Parking is really limited though and we were lucky enough to park in a laundromat nearby without getting towed. The venue itself is quite small id say about 15-20 tables but the service is good and unless you find yourself waiting for a table you are usually done quite quickly. We shared a bit of everything my personal favorites were the fantastic roll, salmon sashimi, and spider roll. Great place i'll be back if i'm in the area craving sushi. read more

So if you're ever around Redondo Ave and craving some sushi vibes, you gotta hit up 39 Degrees! It's legit for happy hour sushi. Me, my girlfriend make it a thing go straight from work because their deals are sooo affordable. They've got draft beer and always order that extra hot sake! We always sit at the bar for quicker service. Plus, the staff are really friendly and make you feel right at home. So yeah, if you're down for some sushi, 39 Degrees is where it's at! read more

Tried the Cincinnati Roll and thoroughly enjoyed it! You can get 2 rolls for $29, which is pretty good for the quality of sushi I received. I'll definitely need to take advantage of that the next time the girl and I are in. I was greeted the moment I walked in. Love this Sushi spot, came here around Halloween for lunch and they had some some really good lunch specials. It was super cool because everyone was dressed up. Came back tonight for dinner and had the fire cracker and lady in red and a couple hand rolls. Love the fried wontons the firecracker came on. It's a legit Sushi bar and everyone is super cool. This place is one of my go-to sushi spots. Their "happy-tummy" hours run Monday-Saturday from 3-7 PM and has some pretty decent deals. I usually leave pretty satisfied, but I do have some constructive criticism as well as some advice for for sushi lovers. Their spicy tuna is often a bit too bitter for my taste and can be somewhat tasteless. Other than that, this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

Wanted to try something new. Ate the B.S.C. roll, chicken teriyaki entrée, and Hamachi delight. The baked scallop was really good, and the miso soup and salad that came with the teriyaki were good. The chicken was slightly dry but not too salty. Everytime I come into this place, it's filled with people! Best to come during Happy Hour: ends at 7! Pitcher is $10, and the rolls are either $6 or $7, depending on the one. Defined a five star place!! This was our firs time here. We ordered several entrees and they were all unlike anything we have ever had. We really enjoyed 'Lobster Dynamite'. What's funny is that we've both lived around Long Beach forever and somehow never fully connected with Oho despite hearing good things about it for years. We had randomly stopped in one afternoon recently thinking we'd just split a roll and head home, but the food ended up being so good that we kept ordering "one more thing" until we accidentally skipped dinner entirely later that night. That experience was good enough that when we found ourselves trying to figure out dinner again yesterday, Oho immediately came back into the conversation. We got there early evening and the timing was perfect. Busy enough to feel lively and like you were out for the night, but not so packed that service slowed down or the room became chaotic. The pacing of the meal was honestly one of the best parts. Dishes came out steadily without crowding the table, and everything felt very natural and relaxed. The tuna crispy rice was fantastic and a little different from the usual presentation. Perfect crisp on the outside, almost caramelized, with really airy spicy tuna on top that reminded me more of a tartare texture than the heavier versions you sometimes get elsewhere. We also had bluefin tuna, toro, salmon sashimi, a spicy scallop roll, and the Extreme Crunch Roll with light eel sauce, which ended up being surprisingly balanced and not over-the-top despite the name. Even the iced green tea stood out. Bright green, almost cloudy, super refreshing, and honestly exactly what I wanted with sushi. Service was excellent both visits. It felt very team-oriented behind the sushi bar and on the floor, which kept everything moving smoothly without feeling rushed. A couple practical notes: parking is easy overall, but the lot is shared with the motel, so just be mindful where you park and try to stay closer toward the restaurant side of the lot. Also, this feels much better suited for couples or small groups than large parties. Four people would be ideal. Six is probably pushing it unless the restaurant is unusually quiet. Really happy we gave this place another shot because it ended up being one of the more satisfying sushi dinners we've had in a while.
