This arcade would be a treasure in any city in the world. It's in Springfield, Missouri. Make a trip. Stay a while. Worth the visit. Like so many arcades today, it's a labor of love. Parking is easy on the street. They're open Wednesday through Sunday, 4-11pm. Flat fee entry gets you credits all night. Pinball is still metered. But as long as they keep their pins running well I'll keep saving up quarters all year long just to bring them back to Springfield for family Christmas. Adults, the kids are alright. What an awesome blast from the past. I remember the 80s. I wasn't too fond of it then, but this place just has all the good parts as you walk back through time. I loved sitting on the couch watching music videos (INXS, Madonna, Devo). The only thing missing was rust color shag carpet. The people working there are really nice and take a lot of joy in what they do. They are practically museum curators. Where else can you experience this much from the 80s?! I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to old school arcades, but I'd say for a city like Springfield, 1984 is doing a fantastic job. The way to pay is an entrance fee per person and you can play majority of the games with your entrance fee, stay as long as you'd like, beat someone else's high score, ya know, the good stuff. You do have to pay extra for the pinball machine, but who wouldn't? Pinball is just fun. They have an upstairs and a downstairs with arcade games. There are neat touches all throughout, like the decor, little seating nooks (the couch by the entrance has cool 1980s yearbooks from high schools and colleges around the Springfield area). They do have snack type food and drinks for purchase as well. This is a really fun place to go if you have guests from out of town and want something to do. Or even just with local friends when you want to get out and have some cheap fun. Overall, 5/5 stars! I've been multiple times, and I know I'll be back again! read more

.This place is a special place. The games they have here were ones I have only played via emulators on various games throughout the years to play the real thing in person was an amazing experience. All for a $10 entry fee was very well worth it. I played about 15 different classics over the period of about an hour. I would have stayed longer however the place was more crowded than I expected, I was maskless and was paranoid about Covid (No health insurance or PTO that is why I am paranoid) I played Joust, Defender, Digdug, Donkey Kong, Gauntlet, space invaders, asteroids, and a few other I don't remember. They also have a pinball section but I don't really care about pinball when there are actual good games around. They also have 80's music playing as well as a Ghostbuster themed lounge. I'm a 90's child but I really appreciate the atmosphere the arcade replicates. I hope one day someone opens a 1999 arcade place where I can play arcade games from my childhood. I read the bad reviews this place got and those people are idiots. Yes a couple games are out of commision, they are literally 30+ years old at this point it's to be expected. How many electronics from 30 years ago are still in daily use? The fact half those games run is incredible. I don't know why they would serve alcohol, its a friendly atmosphere not a freaking bar. The workers there were nice and welcoming. I will definitely come again in the future. My only complaint isn't even their fault, i wish I could fit my freakishly long legs into the Sinistar machine. read more

Two floors packed with old school arcade games and SO much fun! $10 per person the entire visit except for the pinball machines (most of those are $.50 each). All the employees are very nice and helpful. We played Robotron, Ms Pacman, Xevious, Asteroids Deluxe, Tron, Defender, Space Invaders, Frogger, Centipede, Asteroids, and several pinball machines. I really liked this place. They have a good selection of old school video games to choose from. There are little things all over to catch your eye particularly downstairs. Esp the Ghostbusters themed space downstairs. I have only one complaint with this place. (Why only 2 stars instead of 5) I found this place through some search for fun ways to spend the day inexpensively. 1984, charges $10 to get in and the games are free. NOT BAD. RIGHT?? Almost... the pinball machines are not free. That was my primary, really only, interest in going there. In all fairness to them, it did say this on the website. But it didn't start to bother me till later when I thought about my experience. Pinball machines are in nice shape too. So I paid $10 to get in so I could pay to play pinball. Myself and my two companions all paid to play pinball. THAT'S NOT SO GOOD, particularly if you're looking for some inexpensive fun. I'm on the fence about whether I'd go again just for that reason alone. I never was much for video games. Really I've always sucked at them. Since I paid, I ckd to make sure. Yep, I still suck at them. They should offer a deal for those who just want to play pinball... All that said, the staff is very nice, and I did have fun - although that $10 irks me. Been here several times and each time you can tell they keep reinvesting into the business as more games get added and decor keeps getting better. Great place and glad to see it doing well in Springfield. Pros: 1) Great Value: for $7.50 (I remember when it was as low as $5) for all day access, with the ability to leave and come back makes it hands down one of the most affordable options for entertainment. You get more bang for your buck then going to the movies, bowling, a baseball game etc. 2) Great Selection of Games: every time I go, they have something new! 3) Staff: great people and great owners who enjoy what they do! Cons: 1) Paid Pinball: I LOVE pinball and truth be told, that is all I want to play but I understand why they charge for those games, as maintenance on them is a full time job. Just wish they would set all of them to $0.25... seeing how I already paid $7.50 just to get inside the place. 2) Parking: can be a bit of a pain downtown during the evening rush and esp on weekend nights. Just part of being in downtown and not much you can do about it. 3) Busy: things can get busy in the evening and if there is a certain game you want to play only, you may have to wait it out. I had wanted to try 1984 for a while now... and as they were awesome enough to support the summer reading program through the library my daughter and I decided to have a pac man battle yesterday. What a blast from the past! The employees were super helpful and nice, the games were fun to play, and the place was clean. Win-Win-Win. My only disappointment was not being able to find the magical arcade game from my childhood... it was a fighting game, it existed in my hometown's local pizza place, and there was something about a bird hidden in a tree. (my first game easter egg) One suggestion to the owner - the games near the windows get super hot/hard to see around sun down. It wasn't enough to spoil my enjoyment! This is a one of a kind place! Awesome selection of video games that really bring back memories for this 80's kid. Saw all of my favorites, and got to play them. Very reasonable entry price gets you UNLIMITED PLAY on all the video games, pinball machines are still a quarter per play, but that's more of a 70's thing anyway right ;^)... How can you not give this place 5 star's?!!! The only game that continues to eat quarters is the pinball machines. You pay $7.50 per person for all day play! That's right they let you come, and go all day as you please without repayment! Wanna take a break from game's, and get a snack? Well they have pizza by the slice, and a TV downstairs playing a verity of 80's movies. The only thing not 80's is the DVD player. Retro TV, and a old school VHS case rests above the floor model TV. Smaller TV's are throughout the building. Tuned into 80's music videos. A part room is also downstairs. Along with a bulletin board telling you all about what was important in the 80's. 1984 is probably one of the most unique businesses of today. I'm not talking George Orwell here I'm speak of a arcade that has all the games that you loved from the eighties. So, I was born in 1985 and don't exactly remember their first go around, what of it. Some of these games are timeless, some you have to have been around to remember. I don't care who you are, what you background is, or what you might think you "status" is, if you go in you'll have fun. It's one of those places that is made to just breed fun, and at a really affordable price. Started by some guys who were collecting these old games there wives told them to find a better place for them or get rid of them. They guys thought why not just open up a business and let others have some fun too. It wasn't really suppose to be a huge success, but that's what it's turned into. When you first walk in it's like jumping in the Wayback Machine, you know from Aesop's Fables, all the neon and games spread everywhere. The doorman, yes they have a doorman, asks for the cover and then explains who they are and what they're about. Folks I said that it was fairly priced, try $5 at the door and the games are all free. Except for pinball where they charge a quarter a game, because the machines like that break frequently. You can also by a pass 10 visits for $20. After you are explained about the concept you are set free to just play. They have a high score board and it ain't easy to get on. If you're really good you just might. To give you an idea they have about 50-60 games and they rotate new ones in almost daily. They just expanded to more space that use to be storage for the building owner. Just some of there games are; Asteroids, Deluxe Asteroids, Gravitar, Tempest, BattleZone, Space Invaders, Ms. PAC Man, Centipede and many more. 1984 has multiple TVs playing all your favorite 80's music videos. Moving to Springfield I immediately decided for some reason that I would like to go to an arcade. The first one that came up was this magnificent arcade. I immediately was greeted by some of the sweetest and nicest staff and for a small price I was able to spend 4 hours straight just having an ecstatic and phenomenal experience running around and playing with each and every arcade cabinet. All while listening to some classics from the 80's playing on the radio. If you are looking for some classic, old school, 80s down to a science kind of arcade. This is the place to be. Took my 10 year old son to play and at first he was bored. (had an xbox 360 and didn't "get" the theme) After finding some other kids his age they started playing "rampage" and didn't stop for the rest our time there. The staff was nice, games were fun, the price can't be beat. Wish the place had been bigger (it deserves to be). If you don't have your own game room or a multi-game machine then this is the place! I went with my husband and best friend to 1984 and we were having a pretty good time until I stopped and sat down at one of the tables. I found this black thin trapper-keeper type folder that was just awful. I think it was called "The big book of sarcasm". In it they have catalogued their comments/suggestions cards for the sole purpose of belittling the customer. They did everything from make fun of spelling and grammar, to mocking the suggestions and comments made. This is absolutely inappropriate, especially to be left out for all the other customers to see. After I saw that I just had a horrible feeling about being there when they obviously make fun of their customers regularly and now I just don't feel like they deserve my business. read more

1984 is a fantastic place for people to hang out downtown. I'm not a heavy drinker, so I often frequent this lovely retro arcade after a stop at the Mud Lounge. The staff are all fantastic and passionate for what they do. They're always so funny and kind, making you feel welcome in an instant. The games are fun and there's always something new (surprising to say about a retro arcade!). What I love best is the decor. Make sure to take a peek in their bathroom. It's out of this world! Just to add some icing to the cake: A friend of mine was here from out of town and we stopped by, not realizing that they closed in 20 minutes. I was so sad because I really wanted to show him this gem in Springfield. I explained to the doorman that this was the only night during his stay that they'd be open and that we'd gladly pay even though we'd only get a few minutes in. He just let us in for free! How sweet was that? Of course, my out of state friend was completely in love with the place and bought $10 worth of buttons at the snack bar. This is a great classic arcade. The staff are very willing to answer any questions. They do not serve drinks here like similar arcades in other cities. For $5 you get unlimited play of several rooms of old-school arcade video games. It was pretty crowded when we were there, so some of the more popular ones were almost always occupied. I heard an attendant ask people to move on from some games a few times, but then there were some that had the same person playing the entire time we were there. There were also quite a few games that were out of commission. Pinball games cost extra, so we didn't play those. They were having a high score competition in which they gave cards for free entry and brag buttons which was a nice touch. It is definitely a fun idea for a business. I could see these doing well in other cities. I was ready to go in 30 minutes, but if you're a true lover of vintage video games it may be worth the time and money. read more

Great retro arcade. I've got to admit that I still prefer Arkadia in Fayetteville, AR but the two are so far apart it's kind of silly to compare - and both are really fun and well maintained arcades with friendly staff! 1984 has a lot of fantastic games. Paying a bit more for pinball is not a problem as those machines take so much to maintain. The cover fee is very fair. Even if you only stay for an hour, it's well worth it. 1984 is expanding in 2015 although I don't know the details fully, I believe they are going to have two levels (current basement) and I think that would be really great because my only issue with the arcade currently is its limited size. When it's busy it can be difficult to maneuver throughout the building without interrupting someone's play, especially with all of the 2 player games. My favorite games here were Millipede and original Pacman, but they have tons of awesome choices and a great variety. Also, they play 80's music in the background which is a fun touch. read more

You pay a flat fee, and the night is yours, No need for change, you just start fading into 80's heaven. The added decor and sounds also make this place a gem.
