I believe I've Hee'd my last Haw in this establishment. When it opened, it launched and held its ground as a superior restaurant but has steadily gone downhill, and today I had three strikes in one sitting. My wife and I ordered the Caballero Breakfast sandwich and a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Marys came out presented well. But it was as bitter as a hookers earwax. I asked what alcohol was used. I was told Tito's. It tasted like Dry Vermouth or worse. We couldn't get past 2 sips. The second sip was to make sure the first sip told the truth. There was no offer to remake or offer a solution so they sat there the rest of our meal allowing the ice to occasionally shift like an awkward kid asking for a dollar. The food arrived and it was a beautiful sloppy mess which was not an issue as it is supposed to be a messy dish. What it's not supposed to be is a messy haircut. This healthy strand of hair wove its glistening, well conditioned body from under the jiggling egg and connected to the bite I had poised in front of me like a cable on the London Bridge. Not liking to do things that have strings attached. I quietly let the server know. He replaced my meal cooked by a bald chef this time. Onced finished, the ticket came. The drinks were still on it. But they also charged me more for the drinks than the menu price. I paid and left a tip. Disappointedly walking back to my car, not mad but hurt, to have lost another one of the good ones. read more

So, I hate to leave this review because I love visiting this restaurant but I have to be fair in my ratings. My most recent encounter at 1836 was far below subpar. I called my order in and i think the young lady on the phone was not ready for the job. She was unsure of the sides and did not sound confident when placing the order. She told me it would be ready in 25-30 min. My mom went in to take the order only to be told that they were out of the steak I ordered and they couldn't contact me because the lady didn't take my number. I chose a new option that should've only taken a few minutes to make but my mom states that nothing was ready when we came to pick up. We waited an extra 30-40 minutes. Honestly their food is great, but the service was lacking BIG TIME. Had they told us about the wait we could've came back another time but the dishonesty was unnecessary. Customer service is all about transparency. It's a busy night, we get it but I don't think they were considerate of our time. They discounted my food but I think all of it should've been discounted due to the epic flop. Maybe it was the new trainee plus the crowd but train your staff before they hit the floor. A restaurant has to have goof food and service!! I hope this was just a one time thing. Just beware on on the busier nights. read more

The service was great. The atmosphere very nice. You think you are going to get delicious food. Nope. You get chips and salsa which was ok. The green Chile queso was good. Went around brunch time. We've always loved this restaurant, but our last visit was very disappointing. It was a busy Friday night about a month ago and they were very understaffed. Our food came out barley warm (obviously had been sitting waiting for someone to run it to our table.) My husband's hanger steak was very overcooked. When we told the waitress, her only replay was, 'sorry to hear that.' Never sent over a manager to discuss or anything. Sad to say, we will not be back. If you want to be ignored this is your place. We walked in today about 12:30 for lunch. The restaurant was not crowded. That was my first clue. We stood waiting for the Host/Hostess for about 10 minutes. The staff ignored us. Every once in awhile a waiter would make eye contact but nothing more. No acknowledgment, no smile. Gave the impression that my husband and I were an inconvenience. So we walked out the door. This is the second establishment in Tyler that I have walked out of due to being ignored. I visited Tyler for work and was treated to lunch here. I got the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and greens. The chicken was thin and crispy and seasoned well! The greens were actually very flavorful too! Def recommend. read more

The food is never good enough to overcome horrible service! On a positive note the Old Fashion was extremely good. From there, things declined. Our chicken fried steak was extremely tough and chewy, & the mashed potatoes had to be instant. This is just a suggestion, but a good server would keep an eye on an empty glass. We made the mistake of telling one of the servers that we would like more tea and some small plates. We waited and waited, before we saw the guy again. When asked about the tea and small plates for the hors d'oeuvres he commented " that's not my job". Gee, you think you might've said I'll get your server and let them know? By now frustration had ruined the evening. Training is definitely needed. All too often we accept rude incompetent service and say nothing. OWNERS I beseech you to decide whether you want to be a five star or one star operation. We will not be back!! Here's a tip... you can pick up small carafe at the dollar store. If your staff is too lazy or incompetent to keep an eye on the table, fill a carate of tea or ice water to set on the table, so the customers can do it themselves. Cost about a $50 investment and employees can remain irresponsible lazy morons. read more

Went to 1836 for the first time tonight and we were underwhelmed by the Chicken Chop Salad and the burger. The service was good, though!

Food was mediocre and queso was luke warm then, of course, cold due to the A/C. We asked to move seeing this A/C vent was pouring cold air on us and were basically denied with irrational an excuse. We've been here many times before for supper and the atmosphere and even the menu is much better. Skip it if you're looking for a good lunch. read more

The name is misleading. This is a modern, strip center restaurant. The food is mediocre, though they try to spruce it up with fancy garnishes. Our server went missing for a while as we waited for the check. The chicken-fried yard bird was really thin and the gravy was congealed. The collard greens are very bitter and extremely salty. The kids burger was over cooked- almost burnt. There are too many good options close by, I would recommend you go elsewhere. read more

I'm not a person that most becomes complaints about things but when I noticed the menus were dirty covered in food. Our waitress had some kind of an attitude food was very bland no felt labor the fries were definitely from a freezer and a hamburger was terrible and a chicken fried steak has no flavor with it at all. Absolutely great service and food. My wife and I visited for her birthday. We started off with the green chili queso. Very good and we could tell it was made right there in the kitchen. She had a basil gin fizz and I had an old fashioned for drinks. Both amazing. For entrees my wife had the shrimp and grits while I had the carne asada. Both dishes were delicious and flavorful. First off the chicken fried steak was fantastic. Unfortunately it was served on top of a very small portion of mashed potatoes. More like a large garnish. The waiter was conscientious about wearing his mask but other wait staff, the bar tender and the Hostess did not. My thanks to him. I wish he would have advised us that there was a desert menu as we definitely would have ordered. We only found out as we were leaving and saw someone being served desert. This was our first time ever being here. We came here for a birthday dinner. The service was okay. The waiter didn't check on us much and a few of us ran out of drinks multiple times. The food was very good, fantastic steak and quesadillas. Not really a lot of food choices for kids, definitely more of an adult restaurant. Great for parties tho, lots of space and a great atmosphere. Prices also were cheap, it was very good. We will definitely be back, probably without the kids tho! read more

We were in town visiting my daughter at UT Tyler. We tried this place out. The service was outstanding. Aaron B is a rockstar! The chips and salsa starter is fantastic. We also had the Green Chile Queso and Chicken Rolls. Both were excellent. I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and collard greens. I didn't care much for the breading on the chicken fried steak but everything else was good. My wife had the country fried yard bird she really liked it. My daughter had the cast iron enchiladas witch she loved. My daughters boyfriend had the Dobb's steak chimichurri fries, and that was really good too. Overall a really good place. Brunch was amazing! We came in at noon on a Sunday, were immediately seated, and everything on the menu looked so good we had a hard time deciding. Luckily, our waitress was attentive, patient, and extremely helpful and friendly. We started with mimosas and they did not disappoint. The dryness of the bubbly offset the sweetness of the orange juice, and the skewer of fresh fruit on top was a nice touch. I ended up ordering the Country Fried Yard Bird with white gravy. OMG. It was a delicious, huge piece of chicken fried chicken breast over a bed of simple mashed potatoes and a side of collard greens. It was amazing. My husband ordered the Caballero Breakfast Sandwich. It was easily one of the best breakfast sandwiches we've ever tasted. The meats (ham and pulled pork) were tender and the fried egg on top was just perfect. It's the kind of sandwich you eat with a fork and knife. Gooey and meaty and delicious. The fries were good, too. Our 6yo daughter was delighted by the kid's menu, which was really impressive. She decided on chicken tenders and french fries. No complaints from her, and she's practically a chicken finger expert. The atmosphere was loud, with lots of conversation, laughter, and people having a great time. The bill came to something crazy cheap for brunch, like $50, which would never happen in Dallas. UPDATE: We visited this restaurant a second time and were not nearly as impressed as before. Husband expected actual pieces of fried chicken when he ordered Chicken and Fries. What he got instead were a few wimpy looking and dry chicken tenders. My burger was dry and I had to add copious amounts of ketchup. Service was average. One odd thing I noticed both times was that the manager is friends with some of the customers and spends a lot of time visiting their tables. However, again on both occasions, I never saw him visit any other tables. It's kind of offputting to feel ignored by the manager who only has time for his personal friends. We'll likely visit one more time since we like the atmosphere and menu, but 1836 has a lot of competition in Tyler. read more

This was a pretty good little find in Tyler! My husband had a filet and fried lobster tail (amazing!), and I had the Fried yard bird with yummmy mashed potatoes! This was our first visit and my hubby was sooo looking forward to it. It was his birthday too. Well I can't say I will return. It was so cold we all wore our coats. Then I'm gluten free and ordered the gluten free version of the cast iron enchiladas but I can tell you they were not gluten free and I'm in day two of being sick. Not worth it. Potato's were a very poor version of instant. 2 people in our party were served dinner while the third waited a very inappropriate amount of time for there food.
