Let me preface this by saying, I was not looking for a free meal, but I also was not expecting to have the experience I had while eating at 1431 Cafe in Cedar Park Texas (601 E Whitestone Blvd) on Tuesday 5/20/2025, 11:50am. Our waiter, Anthony, was wonderful and very accommodating. I ordered my favorite, liver and onions. The food arrived and the liver looked very overcooked. It actually tasted crunchy and burned. Anthony took it back to the kitchen and ordered me a replacement dish of the hamburger steak. A very unkempt women approached our table, the "manager on duty, Rebecca". She did not introduce herself and just blurted out "What's wrong over here?" I proceeded to tell her the liver was burned. She said "no it wasn't, and that's how it's supposed to be". Then she said "what was wrong with the salad?" I told her it was brown and wilted. She again said "no it wasn't". At that point I cancelled the order for the hamburger steak, stating that if they had not started cooking it already I wanted to cancel it. She said "fine" and walked away. I was then presented with the bill for the entire order, which i never ate and had been taken back to the kitchen earlier. Rebecca said I had to pay because we were given the food. I told her I wasn't paying for something I didn't eat and she said if I didn't pay she would call the police. I told her to do so then because I wasn't paying. I tipped Anthony with cash as none of this was his fault. We got up to leave. Rebecca very abruptly followed us to the door while talking to someone on her cell phone and told me that I was not welcome in the 1431 Cafe again and to never return. I told her not to worry, I would never come back. I was appalled at this incident and most definitely at her behavior. She was very aggressive and intimidating. I honestly was scared for my safety. In my 65 years of life I have never been treated in this manner. Not only will I never step foot into 1431 Cafe, i will make sure to "spread the word" to all those I know. read more

Since the new management, we have seen the quality of some foods go down. It seems all the breakfast items are still very good, but one of our favorites has always been the patty melts. Today it appears to be some sort of preformed processed patty of some kind. Ir certainly did not have the texture of ground beef as before. You could see quite obviously it had been preformed, maybe even precooked, but when asked, the waitress said it was hand formed. No way! Really hate to see this lowering of quality, just lost our place to go to get good tasting patty melts as in years past. read more

NEVER GOING BACK. The experience at this restaurant was soured by the incredibly rude hostess (short hair and glasses), whose cold and extremely rude demeanor set the tone for the entire visit. Despite the food being ok (closer to subpar), the unwelcoming attitude and condescending behavior from the staff made it nearly impossible to enjoy the meal. I would not recommend returning unless you're prepared for an unpleasant greeting and service that leaves much to be desired. Oh and the "manager" (female). Yesterday was our first time at 1431 Cafe. When we entered, several employees welcomed us. Our waitress was AWESOME!!! She was extremly friendly (reminded me of a small town), had a smile the whole time, checked on us a lot, made jokes, and was just downright sweet! The food - OMG! Is sooooo good! And you get a ton of food. I had to take mine home and I ate it for lunch and dinner. When we return, we will be asking for Adrian. Thank you for great service and great food. :) read more

Just to piggy back on this establishments reply. No I wasn't looking for something to complain about. Yes I did complain - the food was sent back and still came back out not good. No the food was not remade because the same indentation in the mashed potatoes when I sent it back was the same mashed potatoes that came out. The others in my group enjoyed their food. This is a honest review and you should take it as such in the spirit it was given. Sometimes you have a bad day but I stand by my comment that the mashed potatoes and gravy was like plastic! The liver and onions were good but would have been better if the food had have been hot! Spent the last 24 hours preparing for a colonoscopy and after having been put under at the center in Leander we chose 1431 Café to have breakfast. The Medical Center had given me an ice cold Coke to drink to help me recover from being put under. We got to the 1431 Café probably was going to spend about $40 and was told by some young lady. She was young that you could not bring a Coke in . My wife explained that I just had a medical procedure and that the doctors office had given me the Coca-Cola to drink, but the server said that you could not bring your own sodas in and I said well I at least want to finish this one before I order another one she said that was policy. Goodbye, so we walked out never to come by again, they've lost our business forever and they lost a $40 ticket at least today. So they lost $40 and they didn't get the benefit of selling a Coca-Cola. They have their policy and where did it get them. We vote with our dollar and I don't recommend anybody go to 1431, their prices are way too high and their attitude sucks. read more

I have dined in this restaurant the past 4 years since moving back to the Austin area and I live right down the street but NEVER AGAIN. We got sat quickly and then waited a long time and watched others that sat down after us get served food before us. We have multiple refills of coffee and finally asked "when is our food coming out"" and were told by the waitress that they were still working on it. I asked my wife to wait just a little longer, so we waited another 17 minutes then I walked up to the hostess stand and told them the wait is to long and that I would pay for the coffee we drank. No apology and said we would have to wait for the waitress to pay for the coffee...then whoever responds to reviews states ticket times and says my wife lied about something on the review she wrote. I only do positive reviews and usually just don't go back to restaurants that give poor customer service but guess what...here is my 2nd review and I will make sure I let as many people as possible know about how you treat people. My wife thought initially it was poor service because she is brown skinned but I reassured her I didn't think that was the case...I thought they must have lost the ticket or something but your response to my wife was unbelievable. An update on my earlier review is in order. I gave a review I felt was accurate for me as I experienced. I'm sorry if the owner didn't like my review but I stand fast on my review. I never asked for a refund or an exchange of my order due to being told the kitchen was closed after I had ordered. I never stated that I was waiting for a prolonged time before being seated. As you say I ate all my food is absolutely not true and the photos I posted was what was left as you could see I had already cut up my meat. I have absolutely no reason to lie or make up a story to get liver or a pork chop free. The owner reversed the charges totally on his own and then came back to berate me as a liar. It speaks volumes of this business and the owner. Update Owner has since charged my credit card a second charge of $14.96 because he was not happy with my review. read more

We have been going here for years. Over the last few months something has definitely started to change - and not in a good way. The food quality seems to have changed, the overall attitude of the place seems off, and a lot of the long time staff members we have grown to love are no longer around. Ownership hasn't changed so my only thought is that ownership has decided to take his business in another direction - not a direction that gives you the small town feel and good food for a good price unfortunately. We also noticed what appears to be a camera and microphone hanging from the ceiling in the bar area and I don't know about you, but that seems a little weird to me. We will not be returning. Come hungry! With options like chicken-fried bacon (just as decadent as it sounds) and huge portions, you won't be disappointed. This place offers all your standard diner breakfast fare plus some fun things like the bacon. I'm always delighted when a diner offers fruit so I was happy with subbing my fruit cup for potatoes, but my husband was sorry not to find shredded hash browns among the options (I thought their flavorful potatoes looked awesome though). Tons of Benedict options for the hollandaise and gravy lover. Dining room is straight ahead with booths and tables (or belly up to the bar). I've seen a line out the door even on weekdays. This was my first time dining at this restaurant. First impression was that is the kind of place that has regulars where the servers know you by sight, if not by name. Definitely warm and inviting, with booths and tables spread throughout the dining room. Our server was great about asking about food ingredients when I mentioned my food intolerances. My catfish was tender and delicious with perfectly crispy crust. The sliced tomato was ripe and juicy. I didn't eat the fries, since they turned out to be breaded, but the server brought me a bowl of fried potato squares that were cooked perfectly. I would come back again and bring my kids, who would appreciate the down home style cooking here. read more

We have dined here for the last 3 years at least twice a month, always for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. We love the consistency, the simplicity of the food, and the service - really friendly servers, hostesses, and fast service. Today when we came in, we were surprised to see nice shiny new printed menus - and that always means prices went up. Prices increased on pretty much everything (86 cents for an omelette, 50 cents for a waffle). New sign at the host station said only tables of 3 or more could sit at a booth - total bummer. My husband always orders the same thing, substituting in tomatoes for bread because he doesn't eat bread anymore and always subs fruit for his side for an extra charge. Server said we couldn't sub in the tomatoes. So he just declined the bread. With prices going up, he got less food for his money. He tries to eat healthy and he always liked going here because he was able to get something that fit his food choices. I always order different things so that kind of thing doesn't affect me but it's sad to see him not get what he wants. I added fruit to my order and it was $5.99 for a small cup of fruit and that portion looked about the same as what he got added to his meal for $2.25. I also would have liked to have bacon with my French toast and it was $5.29 to add that. Whut? A whole package of bacon doesn't cost that! Our tab today was $41.96 with tax. Just to be clear: we are okay with change. We understand inflation and the cost of goods. We understand that businesses have to evolve. But the cost of items is too high and the vibe is off - these things are turning us away. The cafe looks better with the change in the host station and the new placement of the tables. Same fun, eclectic assortment of coffee mugs. Amazing pie. Lots of great tasting food. However, we will be coming here much less in the future in favor of more cost effective options in North Austin and Cedar Park. read more

Service great...no wait to be seated on a Sunday morning great! The food well not the best. The atmosphere is that of a hometown dinner. Really like it. The ladies and gentlemen running the front of the house have the biggest smiles and a very personable. This is the main reason I would come back and eat here again. I had their big boy plate. You didn't have to seat us immediately we didn't even complain if there was a wait. Yall were the ones who rushed to get us seated even though there were other parties so lets not blame the customer in regards to yall rushing to seat people when yall had a "full lobby and guests outside". Maybe take some accountability in yalls own actions in regards to your staff being so unruly rude to my family and in other reviews seems like it's very common for your staff to be rude to their guests. Hmm maybe it's a you problem. Considering your reply to half of the 1 star reviews being so ungodly rude and condescending no wonder your staff seems to think it's okay to treat guests with such rudeness. How about a 180 degree turnaround. On our last visit, about a year ago, my hash was overcooked and dry, Plus 1's omelet came with raw onions and her side of potato's were served cold. I chalk up our last visit as an anomaly. I'm glad we returned as our breakfast was FabUlous! I come here for their corn beef hash and it was 5 stars. The hash was not overcooked and dry as it is sometimes served elsewhere. My over easy eggs were cooked to perfection as were my side of grits. Plus one ordered the red neck benedict and we could have easily shared her breakfast. I'm not a eggs benedict fan but it was darn good. 1431 is a stick to your ribs breakfast joint that also serves lunch. I can't vouch for their lunch but they are always busy right up until their 3PM closing time. Even though they were packed service was friendly and prompt. Pro tip: If you arrive during their busy times, like Sunday AM, be prepared to wait. 1431 is back in our breakfast rotation, 5-stars.... read more

Great food but the second time my order was not correct. I got overcooked food once which was credit back but now no ranch with my salad and gravy everywhere on my boxes and spilled before I could eat it. When I drove back to get a replacement they charged me. They lost my 20 once a week expense. I'll go somewhere else. Chuys next time. Rude lady poor customer service. My 100 I spend a month here will be better spent elsewhere. 3 dollars to replace the gravy. I hope it's worth it. read more

Update: as predicted she would write a nonsense response. Funny as we have met the owner several times throughout the years so I am confident this is a made up response. Read many of the current reviews and it is apparent that there is something wrong with the new management style. This is a difficult review for us to leave as this had been one of favorite places for many years. During the difficult covid era they were one of the first places to reopen and seat customers which made it even more special and endearing. Obviously, we have been long term loyal customers. Staff was always great and welcoming. That recently changed and we found the new management to not have the same welcoming demeanor as 1431 has always been known for. Her temperament obviously has rubbed off on her staff. We questioned an error on the menu that we had been given a different answer just a few days prior from a different waitperson. This waiter was condescending and rude. When we pushed back trying to get a straight answer things went south quickly. We decided best to just leave and while heading to our car the manager came out to pursue us and to use her term was very aggressive. I made a comment about how things had changed and the difference between the former wait staff and her new minions. Had to laugh when she said she asked the former staff to leave because they were thieves and stole from the business which as a business owner myself even if true, I could not imagine making that kind of public statement. Then in her escalating instead of defusing she says we are not allowed in HER restaurant again. No worries from our perspective fortunately there are many places to choose from and no doubt if she continues on the path, she has set it won't be long before other customers are alienated as well. I feel for the owner and wish him the best. No doubt they will respond to this review as they have on all other negative ones with some made up justification and pin the blame on the customer rather than addressing the real problems. My husband and I love coming to 1431 Cafe for weekend brunch. Everything we've tried has been delicious and comes in generous portions. Last time we went he enjoyed his Bloody Mary as well. Today my family was asked to leave after being seated.Had our drinks and had placed our order for 5. The host came over and asked us to move tables because a bigger party could use the table and wanted us to sit in a smaller table that we didn't all fit. Because they weren't nice about it, my family said no, the manager then came over and told us she canceled the food order and that we needed to leave. Now that I look at reviews, seems like it's a norm to accept behavior like this from staff. They need better training. Treating customers like that is unacceptable. We just found a new jewel to stop and have a diner type meal in this area before 3PM. They had a great variety of meals and various "cocktail" offerings and we really enjoy our server, Morgan, which she said it was her first day; but we sure couldn't believe it. She was fabulous. This place had such a fantastic family ambiance. We just loved it. We will go out of our way to visit this cafe again. And try different specials this time. Holy wow! looking for huge portions of unique twists on southern comfort food for either breakfast or lunch?!? this cafe has a really interesting menu and both breakfast and lunch are served all day. Chicken fried bacon anyone?!? Don't miss that delicacy!! But equally good are the omelets, pancakes and eggs benedict varieties (corned beef hash with cream cheese and a chipotle hollandaise? say no more!) Shannon may have been the most knowledgable, humorous and relatable server I've ever had. he gave honest menu advice, was prompt and checked back regularly to fill water glasses, clear plates, etc. Decor is simple, comfortable and allows for a full restaurant to not feel crowded or chaotic. lucky for my waistline I live an hour away. really lucky for my tastebuds that it's worth the drive! read more

I really don't understand the negative reviews here? I've been here many times and it has never disappointed me. Especially the Crème Brûlée French Toast *drool* I have tried to make it at home and can't seem to replicate their perfection. It's been a year since my first review and I've been back probably 50 times or more. Food is still great and reasonably priced. I've rarely strayed from the breakfast menu and the first time I did was the day my son was born. Ordered the club sandwich which was just an absolute monster. I took the leftovers with me to the hospital and it could barely fit in the to-go container. I might have got 3 meals out of that one sandwich. Since last review I've come around on the coffee. Not sure if something has changed with it or if it has just endeared itself to me the way the cafe and its staff have over time. Only criticisms I can give this place is it would be nice if they were open later (and just a smidge earlier so I had the option for breakfast before work), and had a few vegan options that weren't just salads and a few sides. My partner rarely joins me for my excursions here because there's just not much for her to eat there, which is unfortunate. read more
