This is not the best place for Taiwanese, but it'll do. My mom tells me that beef noodle soup actually isn't Taiwanese, but Northern Chinese food (when I told her I wanted to eat Taiwanese food for my bday, beef noodle soup, beef roll, stinky tofu, etc). Food: Beef noodle soup had very tender beef, but an awful lot of fat (I loved, my mom mom spit out), the broth was a bit sour, and not spicy at all, and not as salty as usual (again Mom liked this). I however didn't really like that. The noodles were kinda too soft also. Beef roll. Very good. I got this to go bc the waitress actually didn't hear us order it, and we had to ask repeatedly for it. I would think this would be even better right out of the kitchen. I would come back here just for this. Chitterlings were good and tasted like they should. Came with lots of sliced ginger and raw cabbage, and oyster dipping sauce. Stinky tofu wasn't very stinky, and they were hollow. Mom says they shouldn't be hollow. However the pickled veggies that came with them were great. I would not order this again here. Shrimp omlette (instead of oyster) was good, nice gooeyness, and the sauce nice and sweet. The size of the shrimp were good as well. I would order this again if I came with mom or bro, bf wouldn't like the gooeyness of it. A chai (veggie), very generous portion, and lots of garlic. I really liked this one. Service: I usually don't expect good service at Chinese places, and this place was swamped and with only two waitresses, but after they slowed down, it was still hard to get our beef roll and to go containers. read more

This place is horrible and has absolutely no customer service. The lady that took the order doesn't really speak English and she doesn't listen when you repeat the order to her, so she writes whatever she wants. I repeated the order to her at least 3 times, and it wasn't a big order, and she still got it wrong. She gave me the wrong order and charged me a higher price, and when I brought it to her attention, she kept insisting that the price for the incorrect order is the same as what I'd ordered even though the online order shows a much lower price. She disregarded the fact that the order she gave me was incorrect. Rather than listening, apologizing or even trying to resolve the situation, she just hung up on me. I would give this zero stars, but unfortunately that isn't an option. read more

This is one of the only or few Taiwanese restaurants I know of in Diamond Bar that serve some decent and cheap Taiwanese cuisine & snacks-- so if you're not in the mood to drive all the way to Rowland for some tasty Asian food, this would be a good place to stop by~ The service is friendly and quite fast-- but then again, it's not very busy either. I've been there a couple of times and the two dishes I usually get (or remember eating..) are the noodles with black soybean paste (jajangmyeon) or the Taiwanese-style meatball. The noodles are eehh-- I've had better elsewhere but I still find myself choosing it anyways cos I like jajangmyeon so much .__.;;; The meatball is pretty good though~ I eat that when I just want to have something light and savory. read more

3.5 stars. This place has one of those casual, family-friendly type of environments that I prefer. We've come twice now, and each time the food was consistent and satisfied our cravings for Taiwanese. I don't like the appetizers here, but their rice dishes and noodle soups are pretty good. My favorite is the squid stew with rice noodles -- nice and filling when it's cold outside. Prices are comparably a few pennies more, but still very decent. I recommend! read more

Dishes taste like home and essentially stuff I can make at home (if I knew how to cook). It's nice that it gives me that nostalgic feeling when I eat here and it's everything I grew up with. With that being that, the quality and portions seems all pretty decent for the price. The place was half filled with customers when we walked in to dine. They don't really speak English so thankfully I speak Chinese so was able to converse with them and order with no problem. I highly advise bringing someone that speaks Chinese though! It'll be much easier to communicate. We ordered: 滷油豆腐 Simmered Tofu - It has a nice soft firmness, not too salty, dashed with a bit of green onion for pretty good flavor. Worked out as a great appetizer. 排骨飯 Pork Chop Rice - This was HUGE in portion. You get a pork chop the size of your face served with a side of simmered tea marinated egg, boiled veggies and a simmered tofu! Boyfriend quite enjoyed it and would definitely order again since it was so filling. 香腸飯 Sausage Rice - Came with two sliced sausages that were nicely grilled and also served with a side of simmered tea marinated egg, boiled veggies and a simmered tofu. Sublte sweetness in the center and a nice cripsy skin. 牛肉捲餅 Beef Rolls - The beef in the center was reallyyy tasty. It was soft and tender with the cilantro was just sooo good. Overall, was the food good? Oh yeah, definitely. Were they mind blowing? Not really, but if you can make food that reminds me of home, it's all good with me! This place has some of the worst taiwanese food I have ever had. I was born in Taiwan and have been back to the island of Formosa many times in my life, so I am aquainted with the taste and flavors of the cuisine. I had hope to experience some nostalgia of home coming here, but I was terribly mistaken. First of all, the spicy seafood noodle soup I ordered was just pure spicy. And not even a flavorful spicy. Im used to eating sichuan and mexican food, so I know the difference between spice for flavor and spice that is excess. I couldnt even drink a sip without coughing as if I bad been hit by pepper spray. When my mom and dad asked the waitresses about this, they first questioned whether or not they had even ever been to Taiwan and whether they had any knowledge about the way the noodle soup is made. Not even an apology that the food was not satisfactory. She just objectively attacked my parents. Not only are my parents also born and raised there, but they have had this dish hundreds if not thousands of times in their lives. So they know how it tastes. To continue the insult, when they asked the waitress if she had ever been to Taiwan to cement her authority of authenticity, she responded no! So here we have a person who disparages their customers when presented an issue she herself had no knowledge or experience with! Even funnier was when they brought out a bowl of their soup stock to justify the claims that this is how the soup is flavored. I swear, while this broth did have some opacity, it tasted exactly. Like. Water. As if there were no seasonings at all in it. As if that wasnt the worst, their portions are half the amount of most other surrounding places, while their prices were almost twice as high. We had also ordered a braised tofu appetizer, and it was $5 for 6 small pieces of tofu! The green scallion pancake was $3.50 for about 6 cookie sized pieces. If you want better food for a much more comparable price, you are much better off going to Earthen off of Azusa and Colima. read more

The owner here lacks common decency. We came in for lunch on a hot day and no tables were available. We were the only party waiting and stood inside for several minutes with no issue. All of a sudden the owner started shouting at us that we had to wait outside. I pointed out that we had a baby, that she was sick and had a skin condition that needed her to be kept out of the sun and heat. He shouted again at us that he didn't care and was trying to run a business and that we were in the way. Wow. One of the other reviewers, stated: "The rudest experience in a restaurant I have ever had...I would never take children to a place like this....Go next door to AJ.  Food is just as good and the owners won't yell at you..." I have to agree with all of that! We did indeed go to AJ next door, whose place is less than half as size, just as busy, and they had the decency to let us wait inside with our child. I told the man he was a heartless person and should probably think before he goes off yelling at people. Patronize this business at your peril! read more

Total fob town status, but I love it! I've only tried the Beef Noodle Soup which tastes deliciously savory and herb-y. The menu shows a red chili pepper next to it, but it was barely spicy. My co-worker enjoys it too and she is straight up from the motherland, which is a good sign! At their $6.95 lunch special pricing, you get an entree, soup, and hot and cold tea to-go. Not too shabby for some quick fobby noodly eats. P.S. Try to go with someone who speaks Chinese as it was sort of difficult for me to communicate, but pointing to pictures on the menu works! P.P.S. bye bye Baskin Robbins, HELLO 101 cafe this place JUST opened 2 weeks ago in the Super H Mart Plaza and I actually only ate here because A&J next door was closed they serve up the TYPICAL chinese dishes from noodles to rice to seafoods and "potage" WHATS POTAGE? that's what i was wondering! so i ordered the mixed potage with noodles.. it is BASICALLY a soup but thicker. not bad.. but the pork and squid balls in it had an unpleasant texture...-.- one good thing.. they serve free tea when you dine in.. and they have boba drinks which is buy one get one free BUT.. do NOT order the boba.. the milktea tastes horribly way to sweet and nasty.. we spent 2.50 for the two cups and they are STILL sitting on my kitchen table right now .. and they look like no one has touched them.. i plan to dump them out later.. ALSO i asked for mine w/o boba.. but they still put it in.. my noodles cost 5 bucks. so food is cheap!.. but i'd probably stick to something safer like.. maybe rice? read more

Been coming to this place for nearly 30 years. They use to be the Good Time Cafe in Rowland Heights. What's there to be said after being a repeat customer for this long. They are undoubtly the best authentic Taiwanese food in town. When the weather is cold, I shoot for the Sesame Oil Chicken Noodle. Regularly I order their fried rice and beef ball broth. Other tasty dishes includes the panfried oyster egg pancake, pig intestine noodle and 五羹腸旺... what can I say but I just love this place and it's owner for doing this for so long. read more

There was a big sign in the window showing Lunch Specials for a fixed price. If included salad and drink, so we went in at noon on a Saturday. The server did not greet us but I could tell she was afraid of her English ability. A different server sat us and the original server brought us menus and setups. The regular menu is primarily in Chinese with poor English translations (I'm not complaining; I want real Chinese so this is a good sign) and then a giant laminated placemat shows pictures of some of the items with their corresponding number. I asked the server about the lunch special and she didn't say a word and ran away. The manager came back and sternly said no lunch special on the weekends and then he ran away. Ok, so zero "customer first" service. This is another sign of good Chinese food coming. We ordered meatball soup and sausage rice, based on Yelp reviews. We didn't get tea automatically like other customers, which again, is fine and I would've gotten some if I asked. The sausage plate was sliced Chinese sausages (sweet, smoky, smooth), some rice with ground meat on top and a vegetable I am not familiar with - maybe young hearts of palm. The plate was filling and delicious but I would try something different next time. Their menu is huge for a small place. The soup was good, especially the broth. The broth had toasted shallot on top and a gingery, porky flavor without any fat or cloudiness. So good. In contrast. the meatballs (no veg) were flavorless spheres of gray meat. When I come back I will try something else in that delicious complex broth. Maybe wonton. This place is probably the closest authentic Chinese place to my house in Brea so I will probably be back. The food here is tasty as long as you know what to order. I've been here several times in the past and really enjoy the home style Taiwanese cooking. Simple options like the pork chop with rice, simmered tofu, and Tainan peddler noodle is just basic comfort food for me. My favorite guilty pleasure has to be their oyster omelet. The ambiance of this place matches that of the food. Very simple, nothing dramatic, so don't expect too much from this mom and pop little restaurant. As far as service, I didn't have much to complain about, since I do understand that it is hard to communicate in a foreign tongue. Unfortunately the language barrier is also likely to drive people who doesn't speak Chinese away from this establishment. The servers were friendly, but on this particular night, they ran out of rice. We weren't able to order much, because what's Chinese food without rice, right? I do recommend this place. Don't let the language barrier keep you away. Just bring a Chinese speaking friend, or ask for the menu with pictures. read more

101 cafe had all the signs of a good chinese cafe, you know.. the waitresses that only speak chinese, the menus that are useless unless you know chinese, and... well, the chinese patrons. Alas, the food did not live up to expectations. Here is what i tried: Stinky tofu: I really like their stinky tofu. If you like stinky tofu and you live in this area, you probably know the stinky tofu place in the corner of hong kong plaza on colima, hereafter referred to as HKPSTF. HKPSTF is more softer and is in a light soup, 101 Cafe has a crispier skin and you dip it in dark sauce that they give you. HKPSTF has more of the "stink". 101 is probably not as authentic but i like it. Score: 8/10 Pickled cucumbers: I order these 60% of the time at chinese restaurants. They make it pretty good here.. pretty standard. Score: 8/10 Rou gen mien (squid noodle): I put alot of black vinegar in it. It was good.. Like mary y. said, there was not that much squid but i dont really order this for the squid anyway I was satisfied with around 4 pieces. 7/10 Za Jiang Mien (the dark colored noodle on the picture menu): It tasted ok but lacked substance.. it was mostly noodles and sauce.. and some tofu skin. Score: 6/10 Black pepper beef with onions: It tasted ok, but just.. i dunno.. it seemed.. crudely made. i little too much black pepper in some areas.. the onions were a little to raw. It didnt taste well balanced. (And i LIKE raw onions.. for example at In-N-Out- i dont order animal style.. i like my cheeseburgers with an onion patty). Score: 6/10 Eggplant with shichuan sauce: Yuck! This was pretty bad.. i dunno.. i think they forgot something... like ANY FLAVOR WHATSOEVER. It dish we got was basically just oil and eggplants. SCORE: 3/10 Conclusion: I would go back again for a cheap fast meal hopefully the other dishes are better. read more

When I first set foot inside 101 cafe, I noticed the chairs and tables were kinda worn down. I wouldn't exactly say the place is run down, but it didn't seem like there was much upkeep put into this establishment. Seriously, Dennys' atmosphere looks nicer. Food - the food was okay, but they close half of the kitchen down 45 minutes prior to closing, so no rice. And no rice means half the stuff on the menu can't be ordered. I did have an oyster egg omelet (I think - forgot the specific name on the menu);- It wasn't that bad, but it would've been nice to order a rice dish. Service - Service was okay, but our original waiter didn't really understand English. It also seemed like he kept looking at my girlfriend, expecting her to communicate to him in Chinese (which she isn't that fluent in). Ehhh.. I had lunch here today--- and it really was... just..... ehhhhh. Now, i'm basing my review on just one visit, so keep that in mind. My coworker and I both ordered from their lunch special menu (which seemed like a very good deal--- a drink, appetizer soup, and an entree for $6.95!). My coworker got the beef stew noodle w/ soup and I got the curry chicken chop suey rice. I tried the beef noodle soup and.. it was... okay. It was a bit too salty for my taste and had this (odd) herb-y(?) smell to it. My curry chicken rice.. was bland. I don't have much else to say about it really. It was just bland and not that tasty. I usually finish my meal but I had a bunch of food left over =[. To be fair, I must say that I haven't tried that many taiwanese restaurants before... So take my review with a grain of salt :) haha. I read reviews on this place AFTER I'd already ordered my food (which was stupid of me), and saw someone saying that the green onion pancakes are really good here. This place is very generous about putting salt in your food. I swear I was gonna die from dehydration! Everything was salty as a motherf--ker. Had some Korean Squid Thicken Noodle (weird, cause I thought this was suppose to be a Taiwanese restaurant) Pot stickers were crap because they used those water boiled dumplings. Pot stickers are supposed to be long, not round and the filling wasn't tasty at all :( So after we left the place, we went to get some Yogurtland to cure our thirst. It worked for me but as for my dad, he came home and downed 2 sodas and a cranberry raspberry juice -__- I would suggest going to hao nian dong either in the hong kong plaza or the plaza where coconut bay is if you want food like this. Chicken chow mein was one of the worst versions I've ever had. Tasted like spaghetti noodles with very little flavor and virtually no chicken. Extremely disappointing. The black pepper beef is very tasty and has a good deal of grilled onions. We ordered take out and had to wait about 15 minutes even though there were no customers dining in when we ordered. This Restaurant has been taken off our family's list forever after our lunch today! The Service was unacceptably slow, the servers were extremely rude (well, only 3 workers total--cook, cashier and waiter, all crossing their messy duties), ignorant, unknowledgeable of their own menu, the chef had to come out to take our order, telling us that server didn't know better than her, this cook has apparently changed for the worse; the portions have been greatly reduced (were never generous before to begin with), while the prices raised and the taste severely compromised; plus the mess and chaos inside the Restaurant were nowhere near tolerable, due to under staffing. We asked for water, they ignored us, we asked for changing one order, they said too late, we asked for small plates, never came, we had to keep adding more orders cuz all were too little food. We asked for check, they just walked passed by without return. We asked the cashier a question, he said, don't talk to me when I am busy. They also started charging for hot teapot which they never did before! We threw away too much money at this place today and regret it very much. Please do not make the same stupid mistake of choosing such a cheating eatery as we did today. You will be sorry like us if you did!! They need to take a hike, stop running such a joking restaurant to rob our money, with so many other competitions around them, let's never walk in there ever again! read more
