This place is pretty good if you're craving Taiwanese eats. The lunch combos are good deals and come with a egg drop soup, small cold appetizer (seaweed, pig ear, dry tofu), and a slightly sweetened iced green tea. The squid potage with rice noodle had good flavor but not much squid. I liked the pork appetizer we got, the meat was tender. The gua bao was also pretty good. Overall, the food has a homemade feel to it, like my mom could make it. Nothing super special, but would definitely be willing to come back. read more

I thought 101 Cafe was just meh. Not bad, but not that great either. I've definitely had better taiwanese food elsewhere. There are a million choices and prices are cheap, but the portion sizes are pretty small. We ordered the pork chop off the appetizer section and all we got was one (large, but flat) fried chop for $4.95. Seems a little pricey for what we got. It tasted pretty good though, and had an interesting slightly sweet flavor. We also had the beef roll appetizer and again, we only got 1 roll. It was okay, but not as good as at 101 Noodle Express in Rowland Heights. Finally, we split a wonton soup and a spicy beef noodle soup. The wonton soup tasted mostly like seaweed. Not a bad thing if you like seaweed. The beef noodle soup was fine, but probably better next door at A&J. It needed some red chili to spice it up and there could have been more beef chunks. It's a small restaurant, but it was packed on Saturday night. I wouldn't mind coming back for a quick bite if I'm going to shop at my new favorite H Mart, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here either. read more

Food portion is pathetic just like the other reviews. We ordered Taiwanese lettuce to-go. They must've put in only one single small stalk of the lettuce. It literally fits in a rice bowl only. Just a spoonful per person for a family of 4 and it's gone. Definitely not worth $8.95. The portion for shredded pork with bamboo shoot was also very small. You can barely find pork in it. Since they added a lot of fillers like green onions, chili and garlic, it looked slightly better than the Taiwanese lettuce. Please do something about the portion! I remember coming here as child to the rowland heights location. then they closed, I was sad and missed the pork chop rice. I remember my grandpa would take me here in high school. It's not the cleanest of all places, but is overall a great spot for some quick, cheap, authentic Taiwanese food. If you're not in the mood to wait at Simbala (which is also great), this place is a pretty good substitute. I'm a big fan of their you yu gen mian/fan (squid soup with rice or noodles). 2.5 stars I'm kind of torn on this location. I have only been to the ones in Irvine (now closed) and SGV area, and last night was the first time hubby and I tried this place. We ordered the squid potage with vermicelli (my usual), intestines, and chicken leg rice. Service was good. The taste is overall pretty consistent to that from other locations...but the portions are like half the size! Similar price (if not more) but smaller portions...hmmmm. I love taiwanese night market food. Given that it took me nearly 16 years to actually visit Taiwan, it was these little cafes that my mother took me to that taught me how to love these Taiwanese flavors. Some favorites include: pork intestines served cold, the brown sticky rice, the oyster omelette, pork blood rice cake, stir fried glass noodle, and of course their stinky tofu. My absolute favorite is their kidney made with ginger and sesame oil. It's so hard to properly cook that so it is not raw, but if it is the slightest bit overcooked, and the texture will turn dry and horrible. This taiwanese restaurant just opened recently. I believe there's another one in the HK plaza in rowland, but by the name of Good Time Cafe. The place is pretty small and there are 2 flat screens on a chinese entertainment channel. I ordered the meatball because at ~3, it was pretty much one of the cheapest things on the menu. My friend ordered a cucumber salad. There was complimentary tea that kept me busy while I waited for my food. For a meatball and a simple salad, the food took a bit too long to come. And the place wasnt even that busy, so I guess they are still getting the hang of things, which is understandable. The meatball was hidden in this gooey, starchy thing with this sweet sauce. It was pretty good so I recommend it. I've never had a meatball like this before so it was a good experience. My friend's cucumber salad was pretty plain. She enjoyed it though. Great Taiwanese Food in the area! Parking is easy and easy to find. Located in the Super H Mart Plaza. Definitely a lot of food options but make sure to tell them extra seasoning. Always ask for what they recommend - they usually are able to marrow down the menu for you since there is alot! Very busy on Saturdays for lunch and dinner, but you definitely can order take out. read more

It's honestly really average. The food portions are really small and while the price is average compared to every other place, it's slightly overpriced for the amount of food you receive. This place is only average at best -- I would probably put it between a 2.5-3 stars. We came here for dinner one night after trying to go to seoulfood next door only for it to be closed that night for a staff meeting. We didn't feel like driving anywhere else and figured we might try this place since we hadn't been here yet even though we live across the street. The food is mediocre at best -- we ordered the hot & sour soup, the Taiwanese meatball with gelatin thing, the beef roll, and the preserved egg with tofu. I think the soup was my favorite dish, the meatball was whatever, the beef roll was good but it was super tiny and did not have that much meat in it compared to other spots so it wasn't worth the price, and the preserved egg tofu was just alright. The preserved eggs were super fresh but I didn't like the type of tofu they used.. it was sort of thick and they used some thick gooey soy sauce on it. Overall, i probably wouldn't mind coming back here if I was really craving these dishes and didn't feel like driving all the way to Rowland heights but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

First time trying Taiwanese pork chop. Really really good. The outside is so light and crispy, the pork was flavorful and tender, it was sweet, savory, and so good with extra white pepper on top. My gf ordered the fried stinky tofu...not a fan of that. She liked it tho with the marinated cabbage and carrots it came with. The dipping sauce was good, but the stinky tofu is just not for me. Been there during the lunchtime. I ordered noodles and fried rice to go. The waiter asked me to stay outside because he said they don't have enough spaces for sitting inside. He told me that I will be noticed when the foods ready. I been waiting outside for 30 mins and They completely forgot us. It's a Taiwan style restaurant and they offer good quality food. Diamond Bar is not a city of many choices when it comes to dining. In fact, it's not a very exciting city other than the new TARGET and now, 101 CAFE!!!!! I love this place and have eaten there twice since it's opening. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly. They have a full menu, from your typical Taiwanese small plates to mince-meat rice to fried oysters. Food is served hot and fast; not much waiting necessary. The beef was salty, tough and not marinated. The price was expensive for a stingy portion of crappy food. Very disappointing and will not come back here ever again nor should you. after doing a little shopping at H Mart, i was looking for food.. inside H Mart, the food didn't look too interesting at the cafes. kept walking past the rite aid... at first, i was happy to see A&J. but the waitress didn't seem like she wanted to give me suggestions after i told her what i was looking for...so i left. then i saw 101 cafe. it was clean and remodeled with two big flat screens. thought i'd give it a try. got a chicken leg rice to go. the iced green tea was buy one, get one free. such a hot day that i was happy to have the deal so that i could drink both. heheh. the food came out hot. grabbed my chicken leg rice and went to the car. thought i'd eat some in the car, one bite...and i was in love!! that might have been the best chicken leg rice i've ever tasted!! usually, i'm the type of person who pulls off the skin.. but the chicken was sooo delicious that i ate the skin. it was flavorful and crispy. ooh a little fat won't hurt!! it came with some bok choy and minced meat over rice. authentic taiwanese flavoring...i ALMOST went back to order another one. had to restrain myself. i have a list of items i would like to try. meatball, shaved ice, noodles, etc. next time!!! tip: before 2:30pm you get a free drink with your entree. *** 04/20/12 *** went back two days later for a late dinner. got the chicken leg rice again. hubby agreed that the flavoring and way they made it was delicious. they don't give you that many pieces of chicken but i would rather have correct flavoring/cooking versus double the mediocre taste from somewhere else. oyster pancake had too much cornstarch. their sauce was great though. the oysters were a lot bigger than that of other places. it looks like a half moon when it arrives. sa cha beef noodle was a dry noodle with fairly good sauce too. we saw a couple of other customers ordering it so it must be popular. lastly, we tried the tempura soup. it comes in two bowls. one of the bowls has chicken broth; the other has the taiwanese tempura (not to be confused with the japanese fried tempura), tofu, pig's blood, fish balls with the same red sauce that they put on the oyster pancake. not out of this world but still enjoyable. next time i'm going to try the taiwanese meatball (which i used to eat often in college), shaved ice, green onion pancake. oh, there are sooo many things. my favorite thing about this place is that the taiwanese flavors are authentic. sure, they probably charge you a dollar more than other places, but i think it's worth it to find correct flavoring. read more

We have been her many times. Food was usually not bad. But today was a incredibly bad experience. I will never be back. The rudest experience in a restaurant I have ever had. First they made me wait half an hour for a basic noodle order. Orders were lined up getting cold and they didn't know what to do with them. When the order finally was delivered it was missing several condiments that usually are included. The incredibly rude waiter insulted me and complained when I asked her to give me the things he had forgotten. They were busy and they were not handling it. Not even close. Tea was included, but when I asked for tea with no ice, he REFUSED. Pathetic customer service. I don't know what happened to this place. If they are busy, forget it. Shame on them!!! I would never take children to a place like this. They were totally incompetant. They were missing major things from my lunch special and they said "can't you see how busy I am" when I asked about getting what I paid for. Go next door to AJ. 101 Cafe is basically the same as Good Time Cafe they have the same chinese name hao nien dong. They are owned by two sisters. This one I am reviewing is the younger sister's store. While the other one in Monterey Park is the elder sister's store. They used to be both in Rowland Heights but due to business and customer migration they have ventured to the respective places now. The menu is like a typical 90s style taiwanese restaurant, with various set meal dishes (pork chop rice, minced pork rice) or taiwanese snacks. In recent years due to customers' taste shifting to donbei (north east) china taste they started having some dumplings, XLB (xiao long bao) and chinese beef rolls. Having refound them again I've been going to 101 Cafe since it is closer to where I live. This review is the combined 8 times I have been there. I think they are a poor taiwanese restaurant. The items are less, the price is higher, and worst of all the taste and quality and freshness of the food is substandard. During Chinese New Years Eve 2015 I ordered the following, combination soy stewed plate F-- They served food gone bad, the seweed was smelling sour and had some weird white goo on top and the bean curd had gone bad as well, it had a fermented taste to it. Look I know that they premake the food since simmered items take a long time to cook and simmer so it is ok to cut them then put them in the refrigerator then microwaved it for customers but at least make the effort to see if the food has gone bad? To go for something good go for Good Time Cafe off Atlantic Blvd in Monterey Park. sticky rice in a can D no peanuts, no meat slices barely any mushroom and it is microwaved to the point where the rice is starting to feel hard and chewy To get something better go for Old Country Cafe off Las Tunas Ave. in San Gabriel. chicken roll D- the chicken roll is actually pork and chicken should be fried like a super long big egg roll then cut open and served with sweet and sour sauce. the restaurant instead pre-fried it and cut open, then when we ordered it, they REFRIED the slices, thus taking out most of the moist and juices of the meat which makes the chicken roll slices hard and chewy like rubber. Not to mention the traditional method would have the meat roll up with taro in the center. Nope, not this restaurant. To get something better go for MJ Cafe. stir fry "A" vegetable B+ This looked like 1/3rd less than any place I have ordered the dish. To be fair it was less oily and fairly fresh. The price to quantity ratio is not exactly fair. combination stir fried vermicelli D The same dish at Good time cafe is moist, but stir fried, the vermicelli are cut so using chopsticks you can pick up a nice bite size. The onion / cabbage were plentiful and so were the meat slices so when you pick up the bite size you had a good ratio of rice vermicelli, meat, veggie in your mouth. This restaurant had dry but bearable vermicelli uncut so I can pick up 80% of it with once chopstick snatch, there were literally 2 slices of all the ingredients except for the meat slices which were 5 slices ( I counted), and the veggie / onion which were suppose to be plentiful were so scarce I thought we were rationing for the war on terror like in the ww2 days. meat stew (row-gun) C The meat stew dish taste was close but not the same, why? they forgot to include the lard fried shallots that Taiwanese people use in every stirfry / soup dish. How could you forget that?!?!? Also the bamboo shoots were suppose to be plentiful, not "hey I see 3 of them! They're so lonely?!" spicy fish with tofu B The fish was plentiful and the tofu was stewed with taste. It was an enjoyable dish, the only reason I gave B was because the price to quantity ratio was not equivalent when compared to other restaurants. goose meat C+ The meat was tasteless, not salty enough, the meat forgettaboutit, it was boiled then sat in the fridge until we ordered. Thankfully the sauce of soy / garlic was good enough to make this dish palatable. Overall this restaurant is a failure in my book. I didn't only come here once. I came here 8 times. I also visit the elder sister's Good Time Cafe which is basically the better version of this restaurant with which quantity and quality haven't disappointed me yet (just the drive to MP is so far). At this restaurant never was I happy with them in quantity nor quality. Sadly they are a monopoly in Diamond Bar, so if you need a quick fix for Taiwanese food.........frankly they're it. Yes there are other taiwanese restaurants such as Bull Demon King, 5BoBee, and Mimi's Kitchen but they are more specialized don't offer the variety of stir fry dishes which 101 Cafe offers. I really don't wish this store to be that bad. I wish them a thriving success in this new lunar year, but if they don't change how they operate, I'm afraid they will end up like the other failed hao nien dong in California; chino hills, fremont...etc. read more

We love the one in Chino Hills, so we believed it will never go wrong to pick 101 cafe. But we are wrong! We ordered 2 soup noodles, streamed dumpling (10 pcs), and 2 drinks. The streamed dumpling served 15 minutes later. After my first bite, I found that IT WAS UNDERCOOKED! The filling (pork) looked totally pink and raw! I checked 4 of them, same! I told the waiter, they took the rest of the 6 dumplings back, apologized, and said will REDO a new one for us. Ok, everyone makes mistake, I gave them another shot. 10 minutes there, they brought the same plate of dumping back! They just reheated the 6 dumplings and served again. Are you kidding me? Am I ordering the microwave streamed dumpling? Chinese steamed dumpling should only stream once, if you re-streamed it, it tastes different. This is totally unacceptable, the 4 undercooked dumplings did not get replaced, and they did not take care of this issue - serving undercooked food seriously. I complained this and they just cancelled my order. Fair enough. But I already lost my appetite after all these. Some restaurants do make mistakes like serving the undercooked food. But at least they can handle it in a better and sincere way to make it up the mistake. For 101 Cafe, they did not do a good job on the QC as well as ''crisis'' management. BTW, the 2 soup noodles and drinks were served AFTER another 10 minutes of the cancelled dumpling. Technically, we waited 35 minutes to get our order, and there were only 5 to 6 tables of customers.
