I have flown on HK Express a couple times between Hong Kong and Kunming and I must say it really is not enjoyable, especially after they canceled all flights to Myanmar through August 2016.
Pros:
- Cheap
- Decent legroom
- Can check-in the night before at Airport Express stations
Cons:
- Boarding from remote areas (bussed there), although to be fair, this affects Dragonair as well
- Incredibly rude flight attendants - and I have seen my fair share of less than friendly ones on other airlines. Dragonair's super friendly and professional ones put HK Express' to shame.
- No food and drinks allowed to be brought onboard: What? My friends were not even allowed to bring aboard cups of Starbucks onboard. While I know that in-flight sales help make up for low fares, this is such an asinine policy. I was going to buy their overpriced snacks but after that, no.
- Two flight attendants continued to sell duty-free during heavy turbulence on a Kunming-bound flight last February. To illustrate how bad the turbulence was, the stewardess in the back actually crouched down in the aisle out of fear. It's disgusting how the two attendants in the front cared more about their commission than their safety and that of their pax.
- Frequent cancellations before departure: see for yourself on their website's Important Travel Notice page
Specifically on Myanmar flight cancellations
- While I understand many airlines, including full service ones, sell seats before they secure regulatory approval (i.e. takeoff/landing slots), it is ridiculous that they needed to cancel all bookings from the original inaugural date of February 17, 2016 through the end of August. So many pax are now inconvenienced because of their huge gamble. [Note that some airlines wait until they get slots before they start selling seats, like American Airlines did for their new LAX-Haneda flights]
- I was due to fly on their inaugural flight to Yangon on February 17th but they notified me on December 30th, just about a month and a half before departure, that it could not get the slots
-- To their credit, a full refund and a 200 HKD/segment voucher were offered.
---- This is very late notice and it is impossible to find similarly priced departures to Myanmar.
---- They did NOT give a date for voucher issuance and after 2 calls to customer service I was told two different things: The first agent told me that he did not know and that I should just wait (easy enough for him to say as a non-traveling employee). The second asked me to fill out a refund request form, despite being applicable only for voluntary refunds for departure taxes.
---- An email response from their customer service department told me that they would take 4 weeks. ONE MONTH? That is a long time to wait for someone who needs to plan February travel. Too late - my business has already gone to a full service airline.
My advice? If money is tight, fly on other LCCs if you can, fly out of Guangzhou or Shenzhen, or look for "fanfares" from Cathay/Dragonair. If not, fly on full service airlines instead. read more
