MeokBang Korean BBQ located in Chanway Plaza is conveniently accessible thru New Town Plaza off the MTR. I've never had K-BBQ in the Shatin area before as I've only frequented ones in either Mongkok or Tsim Sha Tsui, but because this place was so close to where I resided, I had to give it a try.
There were quite a number of guests inside the restaurant but it seemed like they were understaffed. My party of three were seated immediately and after perusing the menu, we went for a variety of meats including marinated steak and pork belly slices a la carte, cheesy fried chicken, and kimchi pancakes. We began with a house salad and some ban chan, which were very typical.
The "premium" meats appeared to look good raw and while cooking but when we took a bite (or two or three), it was extremely tough to even bite or pull apart. This happened to all of the BBQ meats on our plate whether cooking to a medium rare or fully cooked. The taste was there, but why a premium cut is so hard to swallow is the problem. The cheesy corn and eggs with tomatoes harboring the grill plate were also very watered down and bland. The cheesy fried chicken was not only soggy and just lukewarm, but the chicken meat was also very chewy. The kimchi pancake was the only palatable item, with a soft flavorful interior and slightly crisp edges.
The service was also subpar, with no dedicated server. Our drinks were never refilled and we had to flag someone down to get more banchan and our check. Needless to say, I won't be coming back. Other diners seemed similarly dissatisfied as well. Don't fall for the pics on the menu! read more
