If you prefer your chicken broth to be rich and creamy, their soup ramen is a delectable indulgence. There is always a line wrapping the restaurant. ＊Signature Chicken Soup Ramen 鶏白湯そば Unlike typical ramen, their broth is uniquely frothed to a cappuccino style to make sure every strand of noodle fully adsorbs the broth. The chicken broth is thick, creamy and densely packed with flavor. You can easily tell it is prepared out of simmering the chicken essence for hours. Each ramen is accompanied by a slice of slow-cooked chicken, two slices of cha shu and deep-fried burdock chips. I am totally impressed by how tender the chicken breast is! I asked for addtional ajitama every time. The egg is perfectly soft-boiled and marinated.

I saw that there are often lineups, but I came after the lunch time rush ~2pm) and there was only 1-2 other tables and no wait. Inside was quite spacious with bar seating and table seating - I honestly didn't mind the bar because it was still roomy (even roomy enough to put my carry on below me haha). There was only ~3 options on their menu so I opted for their Signature Chicken Soup Broth Ramen ($148 HKD). I was honestly blown away by the foamy broth - lightweight but full of chicken flavour. Not salty at all and had such a clean and creamy taste. Noodles were cooked perfectly and tasted similar to thin ramen noodles. It came with 2 different cuts of chicken and both were so tender. I especially enjoyed the cut of the thigh. The fried burdock root had a nice chewy texture. It didn't get too soggy even sitting in the warm broth for a while. I'd say it could be just a tad more crispy because it was a little hard to bite though but the flavour was perfect. Honestly it is quite pricy for a bowl of noodles, but I would definitely revisit as it was that good. Definitely worth the trek out to try!

If that's no indication of how good the place is, perhaps the food will be a better one; I ordered the squid-ink ramen and was utterly beyond satisfied. The order form they have you fill out is laden with customisation options, so the broth comes as rich as you want it to be and same goes for noodle firmness, spice level and condiments. I went for a rich broth with normal firmness on the noodles. The broth definitely has a dominant squid-ink taste yet it's well-balanced with a robust creaminess. The pork belly was tender and succulent and ordering extra noodles makes it even easier to finish the rest of the broth. I would most definitely recommend a visit to Butao! P.S: the seating can be rather limited at times so expect to be sat close next to strangers.

Inside is a small Japanese restaurant with a few tables, a homey vibe, and excellent sushi. We were immediately greeted by the friendly waiter, who seemed to be a combo waiter/manager/(maybe owner?) type -- it was just him and the chef working on a Saturday early evening. Arriving around 6:30-7 or so, we were seated immediately and only the second table in the restaurant. Although things picked up a bit by the time we left at 8-8:30, it was nice to see that you have a good chance at a walk-in table on a Saturday night. We ordered the Seaweed Salad with Vinegar (not my thing, but my wife loved it), Salmon and Yellowtail Nigiri, one Spicy Tuna Roll, one Spicy Scallop Roll and two Asahis and prepared to dig in. I was truly surprised at how good the sushi was -- not because I expected it to be bad, but because I did not expect it to be that good. The Salmon Nigiri in particular was fresh and sweet, and the Spicy Scallop Roll was nothing short of fabulous. They are served as an inside-out roll with scallop, crunchy bits, and a nick kick accompanied by spicy mayo on the bottom. Slathering the roll in the spicy mayo and dipping it in soy sauce made for a magnificent mouthful. It was so good that we ordered a second. The Spicy Tuna Roll was also quite good, but the Spicy Scallop Roll was the star for me. The waiter was friendly, funny and attentive, and really made you feel like you were having a low-key dinner in his living room. It's exactly the kind of place that I'm thrilled to have in the neighborhood for when I want to go out for dinner but don't really feel like making a big production of it. Excellent food, relaxed environment and a good value -- I'll be back, and often.

Our Japanese chef came from Tokyo. He was very friendly and explained the names of fish to us in Cantonese. The restaurant is renowned for their tuna, and all the tuna pieces won our praises--from akami (lean tuna), chu-toro (medium fatty), o-toro (extra fatty), to the signature tuna tossaki hand roll. Both the chu-toro and o-toro were true delicacy without any fiber that melted immediately in our mouth. The signature tuna hand roll (突先巻き) used the rare cut of a tuna that is treasured for its intense flavor. The double uni sent us double happiness. It was very buttery and sweet, leaving us with a rich and unforgettable taste. As a perfect closing, they served some special desserts unlike other omakase spots. The tamagoyaki had a crème-brulêé-like custardy texture. Lastly the strawberries marked the end of our Christmas Day feast. ***You can either choose 13 pcs (HKD1,000 ~USD128) or 16 pcs (HKD1,300 ~USD166). If you like uni, you have to opt for the 16 pcs. There isn't much variety in the lunch sets offered - most of the sets consist of something that's deep fried, whether it be their signature pork chops, fish fillet, prawn or oysters. My mother got the pork chop set while I got the deep fried prawns and oysters with salmon sashimi. Before your food comes, you're given a mortar and pestle to make your own sauce. Inside the mortar are some sesame seeds and you are to add sauce and grind it with the sesame until the sesame seeds are no longer visible. Personally I find this process really fun! I was pretty impressed with the food. The prawns were really nice and normally I don't like cooked oysters, but this was a pleasant surprise! The breadcrumbs were a nice contrast to the, well, sliminess of the oysters. My salmon was good too and was quite fresh. My mother let me have some, and the pork was really, really tender. I think I'll order that next time! One complaint with deep fried food like this is that I feel that it's really filling. As good as it was, my mother and I both struggled with finishing our food! Including service charge, it's a little less than $150 per set which is a bit on the pricy side for lunch, but it's definitely worth a try!
