Now I guess there use to be a old school established restaurant From the Central Pier in Hong Kong, take Pier 4 and the ferry to Sok Kwu Wan (use your Octopus card, it cost $31HKD for the boat trip each way). When you arrive to Sok Kwu Wan (about a 20 minute ferry ride), turn left off the pier and Genuine Lamma Hilton Fishing Village Restaurant is about a 3-5 minute walk up on the left. You walk thru a restaurant called Peach Garden to get to Genuine Lamma Hilton (the restaurant sign to enter is in Chinese, but you will see the Genuine Lamma Hilton name). Make no mistake, the ambiance is basically a dump. But the seafood is fresh, it is open air right on the water and the establishment is clean by Hong Kong standards. The menu is in English and Chinese (with photos) and easily understood. Did I mention the seafood was fresh! We enjoyed scallops, clams (the buttery broth is really delicious!), squid and a fresh fish. Fresh! With a Blue Girl beer, the lunch set us back about $850HKD, but was a great experience and worth the cost because the seafood is fresh. The establishment leaves something to be desired, but this is an old school fishing village and that is exactly what it feels like. While sitting on the dock, with its charming tables and free blowing breeze, it almost felt like Mexico in many ways (short the palm trees)/. Sitting on the water, with the breeze though on a quiet Sunday was a great way to spend the day. I liked this place as well because it was away from the busy, touristy row of seafood restaurants on Sok Kwu Wan, which lacked the open air feeling and were a bit more stuffy and humid.

My family and I docked at Yang Shue Wan so it took us almost 3-4 hours to get to Sok Kwu Wan which is on the other side of the island. Tired and all we were glad to see that Lamma Hilton was the first restaurant closest to the end of the hiking trail. We were seated right next to the water during the sunset so it was really beautiful. Almost like a scene of out national geographics. Took some pretty pictures here. We opted for the 4 persons menu which consisted of: two lobsters, one crab, fish, shrimp, clams, fried rice, and tea. Everything came from the live seafood tanks-well apart from the fried rice and tea. We added 5 mantis shrimps since we all wanted to try it. The crab was cooked with salted egg yolk and it was freaking amazing. I was literally picking the crumbs off the plate. The lobster was ok- cooked with cheese and not really what I would order but my family enjoyed it. The shrimp was boiled plain-very fresh. The mantis shrimp was interesting, looked like a insect but surprisingly really good. Be careful of the shell because it is quite sharp. By the end of the meal, we were pretty satisfied. My mom said it was probably the best meal of the trip. When we got up to leave, we saw that they had mini abalone for about $4 a piece...so our fatasses decided to sit back down and ordered once each. Was soooooo good. Total we spent about $150 for dinner. Not too bad for fresh seafood. Damn I think we could have stayed there all day eating seafood. Would most definitely come back.

The market was filled with trinkets, souvenirs, fruits, vegetables and seafood. It was a one of kind experience and where the locals get all their groceries. They have smaller homes with small kitchens so you buy what you need for the moment not like how I shop at Costco for the month. It a way to cut back on the waste and only buy what you need. Seeing the live seafood squirm around was nothing like the grocery store. It is nice knowing your meal was not frozen but fresh. No matter which booth the service was ready and willing to sell whatever your heart desires. The streets were lined with booths and vendors as well as under the freeways had something for everyone. Knowing the language is the only way to survive these markets especially with local delights you're unfamiliar with. It's always wonderful to emerge into the local customs while traveling. I wish I had farmers markets daily up the street from me what a treat this was!

Come around noon for the best catch of the day as that's the time when most fishermen would be bring their freshly caught seafood to the market. There are a handful of stalls where you can get all kind of seafood. The selection is all a little different so spend some time to look around and decide before purchasing! You can also able to bargain down the price if you are skilled and enjoy doing that. Shrimps, Crabs, Fish, Squid and more. After your purchase, you have the option to bring them upstairs to the food court and have one of the stalls cook them for you. Please verify the cost of cooking/ingredients before committing! There is no standard set price and after you finished eating, it would be too late to complain they overcharged you! The star here is definitely the seafood! As they are so fresh all you need to just steam them and they would taste so delicious. So if you have your own kitchen, I would also suggest buying some and cook them at home.

Wah wah wah! Another hidden gem!…read more The food here is so good and there's quite a few unique dishes!! Seafood is very fresh and tasty. The deep fried tofu is bomb! Super silky and smooth, without a chewy skin. The salted egg yolk shrimps are coated evenly and the shells are edible! The mantis prawns are very juicy and fresh. I also loved the clams soup and the pork chops! Must haves: salted egg yolk shrimps, deep fried tofu, and mantis prawns. Prices are also very fair. Probably even cheaper than many other places that aren't as good! I saw a few michelin signs on the walls, but I'm not sure if it's referring to them or the alcohol they're promoting. But I do think their food is good enough to be Michelin!! It is quite a busy place so be sure to book a reservation!

Also known as "Hing Gung" (慶功), it literally means to celebrate and to reward the hard work the crew put into the show. Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. For a restaurant that is still crowded towards midnight, you know they must have done something right.

You're pretty much paying that extra $ for sitting next to the harbor (a very small harbor, as Yung Shue Wan is a very small town with only one main street!). They advertised their 4 signature dishes on the place mat, which are the lobster with cheese sauce (steamed buns optional, you can also request the longevity noodles for an extra $40), baked medium shrimp with butter, stir fry clams and stir fry pissing shrimp with pepper and salt. Because there were only two of us, we order two out of the four dishes - the lobster and the shrimp, and also a mixed vegetables with vermicelli clay pot. There were 3 types of lobster to choose from - Canadian for $26 per Chinese ounce or tael, and the other two that I forgot, but the unit price was ~$50 and $60 per Chinese ounce. Each lobster is at least more than 1 Chinese pound (= 16 taels), even the smallest one. Anyway, we wanted to try other dishes too, so we just got the cheapest kind of lobster, also we don't know how reputable this restaurant is about lobster cooking so it's better to be a bit conservative... But we're glad they cooked it perfectly! The lobster was juicy and tender with a lot of meat! The noodles tasted great too. I wish the sauce was a bit more creamy and less salty though. Their cheese sauce was not my favorite. The shrimps tasted fresh and juicy with the perfect texture. I love how they put a generous amount of onions on top which add a lot of flavor to the dish. The clay pot was decent enough, nothing special. The service was good and bad. The servers were all very friendly and helpful, but they were not attentive at all, which is not uncommon in HK... Their menus have English and Japanese too for tourists. For these 3 dishes, plus couple of beers, we spent around $1200 for 2 of us. If you wanna check out Lamma Island, I'd recommend going on a Saturday instead of a Sunday because a lot of shops in Yung Shue Wan close on Sundays, not sure about Sok Goo Wan though. We both had a great, relaxing time with a stuffed tummy, but we probably won't come back to this restaurant. Once is good. Have fun!

海港食家 (Harbor Restaurant) is a typical example of killer seafood and stir fry, right in the 'hood…read more First of all it is all the way over in Ap Lei Chau on the main street, a little island (separated by an overpass/bridge) across from Wong Chuk Hang side. Mostly residential, with some factories and small businesses (including a Maserati and Ferrari dealership! Rents be skyrocketing, yo.) This place was virtually unheard of except for the most die hard of locals, until some media personality type decided to share the scoop. Fortunately I have family living nearby who took me here and declared it one of the best eats in the area. Unfortunately one visit is not enough, but I am not sure when I will get back here again. Too many visitors to Hong Kong get caught up in the generics....HK cafe, dim sum, or Michelin star dining. It is an utter shame, considering the blue collar delights, as well as the true hard core grassroots part of Hong Kong, also have their culinary pleasures. And it is best to understand things from the ground up, and in order to do that, one must dive in and immerse in the flavors of the 'hood and what it has to offer. The difficulty is navigating to them, a lack of understanding of local food, and of course the language. It is easier to pick up cuss words, than it is to order proficiently at a neighborhood stir fry and seafood restaurant (or you can eat great food and hear random cussing in places like this, but not during my visit). Too many choices...placard menu, or look at the handwritten specials plastered along the wall. No brainer, pay the fee (not expensive) and get a heaping steaming hot bowl of daily soup. The owner wakes up very early in the morning and goes to the nearby Ap Lei Chau market to purchase fish upwards of 3 times a day, then also goes across the strait to Aberdeen side (there is a giant wholesale fish market there too). Old school man in his 70s reasons that the daily catches change depending on what the fishermen have, thus the need to go regularly, and he doesn't want to miss out (plus he doesn't go online and check social media, and the fishermen don't Tweet their catches). So the soup stock is made with lower end (but fresh) wild local catch. Can you imagine how ridiculous good that is? Throw in some root vegetables, ginger, scallion and it's magic. The restaurant normally has lots of styrofoam tanks outside filled with live and kicking seafood, so you can pick what you want. Unfortunately during my visit it was slim pickins, but we ended up with a small wild fish of the grouper family, and had that mofo steamed with soy sauce, oil, scallions. Really hard to top local cooking, local ingredients, where fish has fish flavor (unlike the farmed commercial varieties at our California Cantonese seafood restaurants) and the sauce is heavenly when splattered over a bowl of steamed white rice. Stir fry....so we wanted some wok stir fry plate. What to get? No brainer... 生炒骨 (sweet and sour spareribs). Very nice execution on this one. Not a single drop of excess goopy sauce (and not cornstarch enhanced). This is the OG shiznit version, and not the moo shoo poo poo doo doo that you find abroad. Beef fried rice was rather textbook, but still hit the spot. I don't remember the total amount of the bill, but it was very reasonable.
