Many back to back seafood restaurants here but not sure if they get their supplies from local fishermen. None of them look especially better than the other so we just randomly picked this place. Salt and chili pepper squid - no salt and chili pepper. Just fried squid with dipping sauce. Sweet and sour pork - execution is not bad since sauce just coats the meat. Taste is also ok Black bean razor clam - only 6 pieces?? Seems like such a rip off. Flavor is not bad. Just as expect with touristy areas claiming to be seafood stalls - mediocre food with higher prices. read more

There are a few seafood restaurants on this strip of Cheung Chau. I believe all of them sell similar food with seafood as the specialty. I had about an hour left before the ferry and was trying to squeeze in a quick meal. They have sets but I just wanted an alacarte and they suggested the steamed prawns with garlic. It was sooo good. The seafood was fresh and covered in delicious garlic and scallions. Underneath, there is vermicelli to catch all the steamed prawn goodness. For $28 USD it was a bit pricey for HK standards but not bad for how large the portion was. Was it unique to the island? I don't know... maybe , maybe not. But it's nice to sit outside and stare at the sunset over the ocean and eat seafood. read more

If you come to Cheung chau island , you must try mochi and you should also eat seafood. Right along the boardwalk waiting trail are a line of seafood restaurants. They are all very similar offering similar dishes for similar prices. We chose this place as it seemed the busiest and most popular. Staff were all very nice and helpful. Tons of options to choose from. Most seafood seemed fresh. Dishes were hit or miss. Clams had sand in many of them. Might try a different place the next time I come to the island. read more

I had a simple mission on Cheung Chau: to eat local seafood. Doesn't seem like it'd be that hard on an island...surrounded by the sea. I ended up in a noodle store where locals were eating seafood. But when inquired, it turns out they brought that in themselves and the noodle shop just cooks it for them! Great beef brisket noodles though. In comes the omnipresent Google, to rescue me in my time of need, and it shined its almighty Googly light on New Baccarat. New Baccarat is the first (or last) in a long line of fresh seafood restaurants...facing the sea. Imagine munching on freshly caught shrimps and crabs while watching the sun set over the ocean's horizon. Well...it's as glorious as it sounds. My SO and I ordered the garlic steamed shrimp and the curry crab. That garlic steamed shrimp is 100% the right idea. It was flavourful, satisfying, and the shrimp had such a fresh bite to them. The curry crab was great too, but they use smaller crabs (like blue crabs) so there wasn't much meat. We also ordered garlic bok choy which was different from other bok choy I've had. It's smaller, sweeter, and it'll make your picky kids love vegetables. Hong Kong has a higher tolerance for service that's more...blunt. But there are definitely great places that make you feel very welcome, like New Baccarat. It's a family run store and the owners have twins that run around, adding to that whole family restaurant on a relaxing island vibe (they've also got a nice washroom). I had asked about a particular shrimp dish and the owner pointed out that it wasn't as good as their garlic steamed shrimp. Thank you! For tourists, the menu is only in Chinese so you'll have to figure something out. But really, there's nothing to worry about. Cheung Chau sees its fair share of tourists and the owners are so nice, I'm sure they'd make fantastic recommendations. Also, with such fresh ingredients, you can't go wrong! There are lots of spots / islands in Hong Kong where you can find Hongkie style seafood, and most of them are of high quality. They could be differentiated though - the seafood at Lamma Island and Sai Kung are more targeting the tourists / "gwai lo", providing more luxurious items like lobsters / deep-sea fishes / big clams etc. And Sai Kung got some Michelin starred restaurants, more high-end in fact. So how about Cheung Chau? The seafood restaurants along the praya are all filled with locals as they provide economic choices of seafoods (of cos there are more expensive ones with a "market price"). These are more "friendly" to the locals who want to have some casual seafood while having an outing to the island. It's a no-brainer to order - most of these restaurants have set lunch menu for 2, for 4 for 6 and so on. We targeted to try another restaurant but it was closed (on a Sunday!), so we walked in this新金湖海鮮菜館. As the main menu items are all so affordable, we ordered a la carte so we can have all our favorite items on the table. We have ordered bamboo clam, deep fried bombay duck (九肚鱼), a steam fish and fried rice. I'm amazed of the huge portion of all the dishes, that's overwhelming for 2 person.
