Temple Street Spice Crab is definitely a tourist crab trap but still worth going. We came here at about 9:30 pm on a weeknight and the place was packed. (Warning: for those who prefer linen table cloths, Temple street spicy crab is not your place. this is street food with greasy foldout tables and stools.) We ordered spicy fried tofu, spicy crab, morning glory with fermented tofu and rice. Everything was good. The best dish was definitely the fried tofu. The batter was light and crispy, with sprinkle of chili pepper. The tofu was silky soft and fresh - like butter that melts in your mouth. The spicy crab was a close second. The crab sits on top of a bed of fried garlic crumbs with red peppers and laced with the numbing peppercorn. While it sounds intimidatingly spicy, it's not that spicy (and I have a mild palate). The garlic, red chili and the numbing peppercorn were perfectly balanced to give the crab a nice flavor. One somewhat disappointing note is that the crabmeat was somewhat dry but it was still delicious As for the morning glory, the veggie was crisp and fresh. One cautionary note: the fermented tofu was a bit overpowering. So if you are not familiar with Chinese fermented tofu, I recommend the regular stir fry morning-glory with garlic. Overall, Temple Street Spice Crab was a good outing. All the dishes we ordered paired nicely with steak rice and on a hot summer night, a cold bottle of beer. One final note: despite its decor or pac thereof, Temple Street Spice Crab is not cheap street eats. Be ready to pay average restaurant price. Enjoy!
"Meh" sums up how I felt about this meal. You can't have 5 star dinners everyday. We sat outside (it's all outside seating) and had a beer. It's a great place to people watch since you're right on the sidewalk. We had the fried lemon chicken. The sauce was good but the chicken was really hard and chewy, basically inedible. The curry rice was ok, it came with shrimp and the spring rolls were good, but then it's kind of hard to mess those up. We also had flat noodles with beef which were pretty good. Not my favorite stop, just ok.
Darn this place for their peanuts. I'm not a food snob by any means but if the "snacking peanuts" Is 10 hkd even if you didn't eat them, that's ridiculous. I mean yes, I see you bring me a new one but still. Food was alright and like others said, super touristy. I even saw my hotel neighbors here. Service is ok but the lady was talking on her phone while ringing us up. The menu has photos and names so it's convenient but do yourself a favor and go to a real restaurant if you care about taste. Otherwise just go for "street food stall" experience and don't expect too much. I'd never come back if I'm in the Yau Ma Tei area. Even cafe de coral is better than this.
This restaurant is located at the very beginning of the temple street night market near Jordan road. There are usually waitresses with menus in the walkway trying to coax you inside. We'd walk by this place about 40 times and since I'm allergic to shellfish I was reluctant to go. It also seems like a giant tourist trap, and I didn't want to take any part in that. I finally gave in to my husband's request for spicy crab after his seafood withdrawal on a Wednesday night. There was no line, and they seem to have expanded over the years because they use a large dining room across the path for customers as well. My husband cannot stop raving about the spicy crab at this place. I was openly jealous about how delicious his crab looked smothered in spicy garlic sauce. He said is was fresh, succulent, and spiced just right. When I'm out of town, I think he secretly goes there to get his seafood fill. I ordered a pork dish with rice. This dish was ok, but next time I'll order something smothered in spicy garlic sauce. The name of this place is just right. Go try some spicy crab. ** Make sure you get your waiter's attention or you could have a long wait to order.
Always wanted to try spicy Crab in Temple Street since we saw this place in a YouTube video. Wanted to sit in the street and eat while watching the chaos of crowds walk by. First off we were told their famous signature dish "spicy crab" is big enough to feed 4 people. At a price of 380 (approximately $65 CAD), we were very sad to say, it barely fed 1 person. It comes with 2 crabs but the crabs were so small there were barely any meat on them. The taste was mouth watering delicious but again... barely any meat. Total rip off and totally different from the picture on their menu.
This is a restaurant to have seafood, but for other food, like fried rice, fried chicken. Personally, I would not recommend this. This is this, I want to grab a quick bite, but I surely not expect this kind of cooking. As per picture that I've uploaded, the chicken seems dry and unappealing. I mean, I could have done a slightly better job at this. The stairs is steep and the platform is too short. The atmosphere is very noisy too so unless you like a bit of crowd or else this is not your scene at all. All in all, this is mainly for tourists, so if you are a tourist, you better be ready to get slightly ripped off.
Ummmmm this place is dirty.... I've only been here once but we won't be coming back.. They sat us in a room where bugs were all over the place.. I hate giving bad reviews but hot damn! Couldn't they at least wipe the table before we sit??? The service was horrible, I may just not be used to it but I don't think slamming the food on the table or finding hairs in our food is something we want to experience again. We ordered the large prawns, I was expecting much more flavor but it wasn't that tasty. The noodles were probably the only thing I would eat again even tho my girlfriend found 3 curly hairs lingering with the noodles. It is located in a great area, lots of people and close to the night market but I'm sure there are much better restaurants to experience
This place is you local/touristed dai pai dong (outside style eating). It's not the cleanest and the waiters can be rude but that's all part of its Hong Kong charm and I can say I have been here more times then I can count because the food is actually really good. I usually get my staple sweet and sour chicken or pork and then a variety of different dishes depending on how many people I am with. Tonight I just took a new friend from Chile who is here for a short stay, studying abroad for a few months. My extremely basic Cantonese usually gets a few smiles out of the servers and tonight was no different. They even had a good grumble about taking our photo although this was all done with good humour. If you don't mind a little dirt for some good food then I would recommend this place. It's right by the night market so after stuffing your face you can walk it off and have a little bargain as you go.
We ate here today and not only did the dishes bear absolutely no resemblance to the pictures pasted on the wall or the menu but we were over charged AND short changed on top of that. We ordered clams which ultimately was mostly sauce with a few clams (about half or less the amount pictured on the menu). We also order boiled abalone which was we find out to be about 1/4 the size of what they picture on the menu and two less than what they have pictured. Both were extremely salty. This is a tourist trap! When done, we added up the bill before paying and it came out to $472. When I brought the bill up to this large figured lady with numerous pouches around her waist with money overflowing from them performed her mathematical magic (as most places do, without a calculator) and told me the bill was $482. She might have had one too many Blue Girl beers at that point (drinking on the job is never a good thing). I thought, alright, that's a little over a $1 US Dollar and we don't tip here anyways, so you can have it. I gave her a $500 bill and was given $12 back in change - short changed $6. Give an inch, take a foot. Cheated out of $16 HKD, a little over $2 USD in total. I know, it's not a lot, but the pure principle of it bothers me. I rarely ever write reviews. I doubt this was an isolated incident and with some many tables and some many customers through the day/night, it adds up. If there was a proper authority to report this or investigate this, I'd be interested in the findings. I am almost positive they prey on tourists. I would not recommend this place and would never eat here again, except maybe to call them out on their shady ways to collect extra money. What goes around come around Temple Street Spicy Crabs. If you choose to eat here, just remember to tally up the bill yourself first to make sure you're not cheated these extra few dollars. If they feel they should be given a tip, they should better their dish portions, improve the quality of the food, and leave a tip jar out or something instead of "stealing" their way to a tip that they really don't deserve anyways.
Temple Spice Crab is a Hong Kong icon, in the bustling area around Temple night market. It's loud, it's busy, it's chaotic, and the Chinese servers are brusque, all business and hugely impolite. It's great fun, and a must-do in Kowloon. read more
Tourists. Tourists EVERYWHERE. I took a 180 degree scan from my table and all I saw were sweaty foreigners and backpacks. Myself included. And I can completely understand why. 1. Right next to a popular tourist destination (Temple Street Market), something listed as a "must-do" in every travel guide? Check. 2. Is a Dai Pai Dong (outdoor eating) which can be categorized as a quintessential Hong Kong experience? Check. 3. Delicious seafood and cheap alcohol? 100% check! Unfortunately, it was just my SO and myself so we could only try 3 things on the menu (and the heat had killed our appetite), but everything looked pretty fantastic. The black bean and chili razor clams were juicy and flavourful. You don't get too much meat on razor clams and the dish was dominated with their elongated shells, but delicious regardless. Following up on that was garlicky goodness in a seashell with steamed clams and vermicelli. The last to arrive at our table (took awhile, and we were told by the server that this is normal) was the water spinach with fermented tofu. My god...this was the oiliest, most unhealthy, most amazing green dish I've had in a long long time. Water spinach is one of my favourite veggies, as the stem is hollow and it does an amazing job of soaking up all the grease and sauce for one hell of a flavour explosion. Whether you were attracted by the tubs of your future seafood dish swimming around or by the lively atmosphere, this is definitely one place worth checking out. It's a great gateway for people who might not be completely familiar with the dining culture/language (menu has pictures and English! And they have napkins!!) Grab a few friends, order a bunch off the menu, and bask in your satisfaction (and maybe guilt) while you take in the sights and sounds of one of the greatest cities to visit. Cheers! Part of any ideal Hong Kong visit should involve a night market of some sort. Temple Street (https://www.yelp.com/biz/廟街夜市-香港) being the most lively of the bunch brings in crowds aplenty, and as a result places like Temple Spice Crabs are busy night in and night out. One's mileage will certainly vary here because its a tad too small and a little (perhaps a LOT) too touristy. Above all, the food is subpar at best. The positives are obvious, the place has quite a few tubs of fresh seafood on display and the faux dai pai dong feel that is designed to attract onlookers from the street. To match the curiosity with the demand, they have an entire team of individuals that are out recruiting people to come check out the restaurant. No ordinary place would be able to hire and keep a staff that engaged without some merit of success. So as a result, my local friends and I came with some initial hesitation but ignored the fact the largely expat was all up in the crabs and rice dishes. We ordered a smattering of recommendations from the staff: Mantis Shrimp (攋尿蝦), Crab Fried Noodle (螃蟹炒麵), Shrimp with Egg (蝦仁炒蛋), Salt Peppered Squid (椒鹽魷魚), Jellyfish Salad (涼拌海蜇), and a Yeung Chow Fried Rice (揚州炒飯). It was all a little salty (yet the squid wasn't salty enough) but largely bland. Considering the markup on the food, it was disappointing. It is a cash only place and they provide napkins (this is huge!). Expect to buy water or beer, I'm not sure if they allow for BYOB at all. Unless one is desperate for food and unwilling to travel, it should always be emphasized that there are better establishments and food alternatives all around the night market. read more

Don't come here... Not worth it. Foods are very expensive. They charged $10hk for peanuts regardless you want it or not. They didn't even give us rice when we ordered 4 dishes of foods. Will not recommend to anyone. That's $391hk for these 4 dishes. read more

Jumbo spicy garlic squilla (mantis prawns) for 120hkd. It's a deal... Hang out and people watch the night market shoppers at an open air table with a beer? Puts this place over the top. Wait staff spoke English and were very helpful... I'd recommend this place to friends. read more

Excellent seasoning on the Squilla! Garlicky flavors with a hint of spice is a great way to start off the night. Plenty of room here to watch the crowd roll by the night market and most importantly enjoy the great food. Not really into the razor clams but it's pretty decent considering the excellent sauce that goes with it. Roasted garlic is the feature ingredient here...if your into garlic seasoning this is the place to be. The seafood is fresh and is on display in front of the restaurant. Choose your flavor and they'll grill it up family style. read more
