The service is lovely; we had a very attentive waiter who brought food to all 4 of us lickety-split during a busy lunch hour. He was always ready when we needed him, and seemed happy to be working there. The food was only middling, however; a very bland spinach salad, too much yellow in the iceberg lettuce, and too many raw garlic pieces in the fries. Also, this restaurant needs to step up its enviro game. Please have servers ask before they refill our water; we ended up wasting a lot of it. I came to Zut this weekend for a nice Saturday date night. We arrived around 7:00pm, and were seated immediately (although there have been times when it is packed and there is a wait, according to my boyfriend). We were seated towards the back of the restaurant at a really, really tiny two person table. After we ordered, another group came and sat at the table next to us, and everyone had trouble getting in and out of their seats as the tables were so close together. This is my only criticism! We ordered the funghi pizza and added prosciutto, as well as the ricotta ravioli. We had garlic broccolini on the side! The food was seriously incredible. The ravioli was definitely the highlight of the meal- super creamy, flavorful, and delicious. The broccolini complemented the meal well, and the mushrooms from the pizza added a perfect savory flavor. The food was delicious, albeit a little bit heavy, so keep this in mind. Our server (I can't remember her name) was extremely friendly, and service was fast and efficient. We were out of there in less than an hour. Overall, I would highly recommend Zut for delicious food and fast, friendly service! I will certainly be returning. read more

Wasn't blown away by the food and it's certainly mot cheap. There also aren't any creative options, as it would be one thing if the food was priced as such but not something that was easy to find. Have only been a few times but everyone has been nice and attentive and ready to make our experience a positive one. There's nothing wrong with Zut as it very much caters to the environment it is in, but I'm just slightly disappointed every time I walk out compared with how much I've dropped on the meal. I went here last night with my husband and 2.5 year old. We ordered a margarita pizza, the burrata cheese, meatballs, and a caesar salad. Everything was delicious...I especially loved the salad and the burrata cheese. The waiter was very attentive and friendly and he brought out our food quickly (which I appreciated since we had a hungry toddler with us!) I especially liked that they had plenty of outdoor seating (although indoor looked great too as they had big open doors with plenty of airflow) and next time when my kid is older she can order from the children's menu. read more

If you want pleasant atmosphere and friendly service, Zut could be for you. But you may be disappointed if you're looking for good bistro food. Most of the dishes I've had here were mediocre at best. The Niçoise salad, for example, is not the composed dish one expects; what you get is a nondescript tossed salad that makes you wonder if they've ever seen a real Niçoise salad. As the Duke of Zut, today's lunch was my 43rd checkin at Zut. We had a "one star" experience today. The waiter, who has served us multiple times, dropped the check 1 hour 35 minutes into the meal and apologetically informed us that "a reservation was waiting" for our table. I HAD NEVER BEEN ASKED TO LEAVE A RESTAURANT UNTIL TODAY . Prior to this unexpected request, the meal was well paced including drinks, appetizer, entrée and dessert. The word "zut" literally means "ah shoot" in French. It implies that a mistake was made and regret ensued. Unfortunately, this is reflective of our experience at Zut! this weekend. First of all, how is this restaurant classified as Mediterranean? The host was not friendly but not unfriendly. Just meh. The entrance is crowded and while we stood there waiting for the host, at least 3 people said "excuse me" to pass us. We basically felt in the way as soon as we got there. We were seated in busy loud corner but I think all the spots are probably busy loud corners...This restaurant doesn't make good use of space. We kept getting our chairs bumped by passers by and wait staff and I could see it was happening to other tables as well. Servers are single file passing each other and weaving between chairs. The service was fine. Nothing stood out. Didn't tell us about the specials, and gave no description of the menu. Server gave beverages to wrong people, no attention to detail. Food came out overdone and and under seasoned. Pork chop: tough, unevenly cooked and under seasoned Ribeye: tough, unevenly cooked and under seasoned....the worst Ribeye I have ever had. It's generally a pretty tender and flavorful cut of meat... what a pity to ruin it. Salmon: over cooked and not seasoned at all, just topped with a chunky, dill white cream cheese... not sure what the chunk why sauce was. Scallop risotto: scallops were ruined by being overdone and not seasoned. The risotto was very grainy. You could feel each grain of hard/cold rice. Risotto should be velvety and decadent. We ordered the olives, Burrata and a half dozen oysters as appies they were unremarkable. Paid quite a bit of money to take our out of town mothers to this place and had to apologize to them after. Our dog on the other hand was very happy because I took the ribeye home and fed it to him. What a shame because this restaurant has been around a long time. But really, how does it survive next to gems like Iyasare and Bette's Oceanview diner in a prime location like 4th Street in Berkeley? Zut, we'll never make that mistake again. read more

The worst place ever! They messed up my Zut! Burger three times and it took more than an hour. All I wanted was a plain cheeseburger with cheddar. NOTHING AT ALL!!! NO MAYO, NO NOTHING ONLY CHEDDAR!! The first time it came with aioli, the second time with pepper jack and AIOLI AND IT WAS THE SAME BURGER, and the third time with all the fixings. The manager didn't have time to talk to me. Knowing it's Berkeley, I did feel very uncomfortable as the only person of African descent being served, and they couldn't get it right. Zut!, you have to do better. I even left a tip. read more

Came here a few months back and it was great. Came again and it was ok, missing some menu items. Service has been hit or miss but it's a pandemic and things are just busy and different for everyone. However, tonight it was unfortunate that we ordered food for the family. Kids pizzas and two burgers. The two burgers alone were $50, which yes, it's a crazy amount of $$$$. So when we began eating the burgers and realized they were not cooked well done but very undercooked and some pieces also almost raw, it just was disappointing because the burgers really are amazing when cooked correctly. We called and got a refund for the problem which was easy and that was good and appreciated. But $25 a burger should probably really make sure something this simple isn't lost to waste for both the consumer and the restaurant trying to make $. I'm surprised by the low rating for this place because our meal was fantastic. I wonder if it has recently changed manus or ownership because I would call anything on the menu Mediterranean even though the Yelp category is Mediterranean. We went for Father's Day brunch and everything we ate was great. The pizzas are delicious with very crispy but chewy dough. The Pear and Prosciutto pizza was good but the Salciccia (sausage and veggies) was remarkable. The Orange and Avocado Salad was delicious. We all agreed the Crispy Brussels Sprouts were the best we have ever had. They have an extensive wine menu and very creative cocktails. The desserts were good: gluten-free chocolate cake, ice cream sundae and, my favorite, Creme Brûlée. The service was good, the atmosphere is pleasant, and there are fresh flowers in the bathroom. Zut is nice place for a date. Prior to covid I used to sit inside at the bar, since covid I've sat out side for a meal. The atmosphere is 5 stars. Lovely patio on 4th St. Unfortunately, the food is only 2 stars at best, and disappointing. I don't think I'll have dinner there again. I had the fish - 2 thin pieces of the kind of fish that is usually thick with a steak-like cut, and which was served sitting in a pool of butter with no other flavors. My friend had the risotto which he said was too salty and didn't look like they even used Italian risotto rice to make it. The rice was long grain and yellow. If they improved their menu, this could be a great place. Until then, I'd recommend that you don't order a main course. Maybe stick with a simple pizza. read more

We came for dinner early and in a mostly empty restaurant were asked if we had a reservation and got a withering look when I said no we do not. Then we were seated in the smallest two top between two other couples having loud conversations on either side of us. All the surrounding two tops behind us were open. I should have just asked to be seated somewhere else more quiet but we were not very comfortable in that moment so we just left. We liked our meal at Zut Tavern but very disappointed that they could not accommodate the gluten free population. I have to say the pizza was delicious. The menu was very limited but very good. The wine bar is expensive. The bread was delicious and the olive oil delicious. The location is on the street in a really cool area of town. We were lucky to find street parking but happy to park right in front of the restaurant. The patio is beautiful in the afternoon. We sat outside where we heard the romantic sound of the Amtrack train roaring through. The waiter was really great and turned on the heater, which took the edge off of the windy afternoon. We love to add arugula to pizza. The IPA beer we tasted was fresh and had a hint of lime. It was frothy and had a melted butter coloring. It came from a local brewery and we were happy to support local. I'm a fan and would go back to Zut Tavern. read more

Ordered side of veggies buttered brussel sprouts & turnips which were too buttery & salty. Mushroom pizza w leeks $21, added sausage $3 was very bland (good thing we had meat added w side of pepper flakes). Crust & size of pizza were different from last time I was here. Pictures posted. I wanted to like you but with so many thing wrongs, I cannot. My spouse and I shared the hamachi crudo, crab salad, pizza with sausage and brocollini. For my secondi, I had the octopus and my spouse, the pork chop. All the dishes were a bit off. The hamachi crudo, had ikura that were odd. It did not pop like ikura. It was a fake imposter. As for the appetizer, it was ok, but a lot dressings that took away from the fish. The crab salad had a lot of other ingredients that took away from the crab flavor. The chicories were large piece, making the salad hard to eat. I did like the brocollini pizza. The thin crust held well to the sausage and cheese. Fat = Good. My octopus was unfortunately sad. The octopus was charred and the flavor could not be masked by the broth that came with it. The broth it's self was too watery and salty. It was a soup. Yes, if you want the octopus, it is a soup dish, though not explained on the menu. As much as I love any octopus dish, this dish could not be saved. Salty and miserable in presentation and taste. I ate it since I was hungry but not again. I would have expected a better dish from Zut. I am happy I visited for dinner, because now I know I can check this place off and not return. read more

The worst meal I've had in a very long time. Everything from the service to the food was terrible. First, we had 8:00pm reservations, and they couldn't seat us until 8:20. It was cold outside, the bar was full, so we waited in their little foyer. My first impression was being glared at and listening to the waitress curse about me being in her way (which I wasn't, I saw her coming and moved). We were finally seated, and ordered a bowl of $9 minestrone and apps. Everyone at the table tried the minestrone, and commented that it tasted worse than bad canned sound. It was like they used dishwater and undercooked vegetables. The Brussel sprouts were charred and drowned in a sugary balsamic sauce. The ravioli was so gross, we didn't even have the stomachs to finish the tiny thing. It took forever to get our meals, the table next to us even complained several times to their waitress because theirs was taking so long. Once we received our entrees, they were just as underwhelming. The pizza was charred, the pasta was overlooked, and we ended up spending over $150 overall for four people. It was my parents last night in town, and I'm really disappointed about wasting the meal here. It's been a long time since I've been this disappointed in a meal, and I do not plan to return. read more

The staff is GREAT and the food tastes fresh. The ambience feels relaxed and the menu is varied. I love their brussel sprouts and their entrees. Parking is free and easy in the back. They also have a great selection of draft beers, mixed drinks and non-alcoholic beverages/mock-tails. In hindsight, my memories were specifically about the cocktails (which remain a very broad and well crafted menu, even the non-alcoholic shrubs!), and the Brussels sprouts (which I didn't try this time, but assume are still amazing though heavy). What really set me off though was the "mixed greens" salad that was a dull plate of chopped romaine. The pizza was a nice blend of toppings, but the crust was a thick sourdough not especially to my liking. The service was delightful. We weren't there at a busy time. Amazing food, every time. Friendly servers that are genuinely nice, attentive and kind. Coal smoked figs on ricotta was an intriguing start, dark, sticky sweet and creamy, with mint that provided a little pick me up. More tart vinegar with salt/ prosciutto flakes granules might help offset the heavy flavors. The papardelle Bolognese was the perfect thickness and texture to hold the hearty but not heavy bolognese. Just the right amount of acidity and umami. My rare burger was soooo juicy, cooked just right, with a seared flavorful outside. Fixings were plump and fresh. Fries were so-so, a little dry, though thin cut was appreciated. Our cookies n cream mocha cheesecake with strawberry sauce was a delightful way to wrap the meal, with just the right amount of sweet to accompany a firm texture and crumbly but moist crust. read more

Not only was Pam super sweet in making sure I was comfortable ("If you're cold I can close the patio doors for you?"), she was also very attentive the whole time I was there. The girls at the table next to me had some trouble narrowing down their wine choices and Pam was happy to supply them with small tastes of each, which I thought was awesome. Poutine was fabulous! The portion of duck meat was astounding and the egg on top was perfectly poached. The fries were fried just shy of too crispy in order to hold up to all the delicious duck gravy.
