We ate are at Divan for dinner tonight and it was exceptional. Lovely space, great service, and delicious food. We had the shishito peppers which had a tasty tomato sauce and some crispy potatoes on top- really unique preparation and generous portion- and the cheese and arugula pide to start. The pide was lighter than I expected it to be with a light layer of cheese and really fluffy bread- outstanding. My husband had the lamb chops for his main which was an enormous portion- essentially four chops (two large double chops) and he really enjoyed it. I had the branzino which comes with two fillets, a really nice sauce, cauliflower mash, and some carrots and cauliflower florets. It was very filling and tasty. We can't wait to go back! read more

My partner booked us a reservation here for a special occasion at 6PM on a Thursday, and I'm kind of glad he did because even though it didn't seem that busy at first, the tables around us filled up pretty quickly. On a Thursday night - that's kinda telling. Divan seems like a bit of an upscale, but also somewhat casual restaurant. Very nice decor and somewhat of an intimate vibe. They're located inside what used to be the Marketplace plaza on 4th Street. The Marketplace plaza has their own parking lot, so if you're able to find parking there, that's probably the easiest. Otherwise, you'll have to find street parking. Once seated, they gave us the option of sparkling water or still water and they asked us if we had any dietary restrictions that they should know of. I mentioned that I don't eat dairy. Between my partner and I, we shared the Mezze Trio, Lahana Sarm, Kıymalı Pide, and Çökertme. The server that took our order was very accommodating. He mentioned which part of each dish has dairy, whether or not the dairy portion can be set aside so my partner can enjoy it, if a little bit of butter was okay, etc. Very accommodating! I think that's the most thorough explanation I've ever gotten about each dish without having to specifically ask, and just mentioning that I had a dietary restriction. With how much we ordered between to two people, I was wondering how they'll fit it on our table, but they staggered the dishes. They served the appetizers, Mezze Trio and Lahana Sarm first. The Mezze Trio was had amazing flavors. I personally didn't try the girit ezme, but my partner loved it. My favorite of the three was the muhammara. The roasted red bell peppers just had so much flavor to it. It wasn't too heavy either. The hummus had a very bean-y flavor to it, which is also really good and probably one of the better hummus I've tried. The Lahana Sarm comes paired with garlic labneh which I have slightly sampled, but my partner was absolutely addicted to it. The cabbage roll already had a lot of flavor to it without adding the garlic labneh, but I can see how adding it can enhance the flavors even more. Next came with Kıymalı Pide. This was the only Pide that didn't have cheese, so I opted for this one. The ground beef mixed with Turkish spice was a flavor bomb. I love that the pide crust was thin but also crunchy. Just thick enough that it wasn't quite cracker-like, but not like a pizza crust either. Somewhere in-between. Instead of using butter, they brushed a layer of olive oil on top to make the crust glisten. It was a delicious pide! Lastly, the Çökertme. I don't remember the server asking how rare we want the beef, but it came medium rare - perfect. Maybe that's by default. I'm not the biggest meat eater, but my partner certainly enjoyed the beef! I personally loved the shoestring fries they placed the beef on top of. The addition of sundried tomatoes and scallions also added a touch of other flavors to the dish. This came paired with eggplant labneh, which I think was even better than the garlic one since the eggplant adds a different texture and makes it lighter as well (I sampled a bit of both). Their dessert selection is small, but made well. Our usual pick is baklava, which we opted for this time as well. But they gave us a complementary Sütlaç for the special occasion as well. I actually liked the Sütlaç more because it's very custard like. I never had it before and I'm sure there's dairy in it, but I couldn't resist trying something new and something so appetizing. It's not like a creme brulee even if it kinda looks like one. The rice pudding reminds me of tapioca pudding, but even softer because it's rice. It's only very mildly sweetened which I really liked. As for the baklava, it was beautiful and delicious as well. This baklava had more walnuts to it so the walnut flavor was a lot more prominent than most other baklava I've tried. A very sweet contrast to the Sütlaç. Service was amazingly attentative. We had three different rotating servers that came to check on us frequently, make sure our waters are filled, our plates are clean and ready for the next course, etc. Some of them even had personal stories to share and I enjoyed hearing about them! Very nice ambiance, very open and relaxing vibe. I was there for lunch and started at the patio, but decided to enjoy the inside instead of the view of the parking lot and hearing the train. I ordered the Mucver, zucchini cakes and a beef kebob. The cakes were served with labneh and were deelish. My beef was over cooked to my liking, and I requested one to be cooked medium rare. I asked the waiter about it and it was no problem for them to make me another... it was absolutely perfect ! FYI - he did tell me that they usually cook the beef medium to well done, so if you prefer your meat medium rare, just let them know. Great customer service!! All staff very friendly and accommodating. Something I noticed too, is that most of the staff are Turkish. It's a Turkish restaurant and they know their traditional food!! We were being served by 2 to 3 waiters but there was no coordination between them. Service was quite slow. It took them several minutes to bring us the takeout boxes. More time to bring the check. This place surpassed our expectations. We both ordered the chicken kebab plate. The chicken kabob was so tender that it had the texture of tofu. There was tons of spices that you could even see on top of the chicken and it was grilled and had a nice Smoky flavor. You get two long sticks of this meat on top of a creamy eggplant yogurt. The eggplant labneh is like baba ganoush but creamier. The rice was the star of this dish. Sultan rice had pinenuts, raisins apricots, herbs and spices. I think the rice was sticky rice. We would have loved to have extra rice. The service is so much better than Chez Panisse. There's a 3% living wage fee just like they have at Chez Panisse. The tip starts at 18%. I'm not surprised that the service was excellent here because the employees are getting reasonable pay. Definitely a place I will come back again and again. My friend, her 9-month-old daughter, and I went to celebrate our birthdays, and unfortunately, an experience with one of the staff members made what should have been a lovely celebration very uncomfortable. Our primary waiter was friendly and attentive. However, another waiter who was not serving our table repeatedly came over to interact with my friend's baby. At first, his comments about how cute she was seemed friendly and genuine. But it quickly became uncomfortable because he continued coming back to our table, getting very close to the baby's face, and focusing a disproportionate amount of attention on her. What also stood out to me was the reaction of our actual waiter. Several times, while he was at our table attending to us, the other waiter would come over and begin interacting with the baby. I noticed our waiter giving him what appeared to be a concerned or uncomfortable side-eye as he watched this happen. I obviously cannot speak for what our waiter was thinking, but the interaction was noticeable enough that even his reaction stood out to me. At one point, the other waiter told us that he has a collection of selfies he has taken with customers' babies. He then pulled out his phone and showed us several photos of himself posing with other customers' children. Both my friend and I found this extremely inappropriate and uncomfortable. Seeing an employee casually show us a collection of photos of other people's babies made the situation feel even more unusual. Based on what he showed us, this did not appear to be an isolated incident, but rather something he regularly does with customers' children. Later, while we were having a private conversation, we noticed that he had approached our table again with his phone out and appeared to be preparing to take a selfie with my friend's daughter. He had not asked permission, and we had not even noticed him approach. My friend immediately told him that he did not have permission to photograph her daughter and covered her daughter's face before he could take the photo. He appeared flustered and quickly walked away. What made the situation even stranger was that this was not our waiter. He did not take our order, serve our food, or bring our check, so I genuinely did not understand why he repeatedly returned to our table to interact with the baby. As we were leaving, he began clearing our table. My friend thanked him, and after all of the previous interaction, he completely ignored her. It was a very strange ending to an already uncomfortable situation. I want to be clear that I am not making accusations about this employee's intentions, and I don't want to make assumptions about why he was so interested in photographing or interacting with customers' children. However, intent does not override boundaries, especially when children are involved. A parent's permission should always be obtained before attempting to photograph or take a selfie with their child. Showing strangers a personal collection of photos of other people's babies was also deeply inappropriate and made the entire interaction feel even more concerning. There is also a broader issue here that I think management should be aware of. If an employee is routinely approaching customers' children, getting extremely close to them, and attempting to take photos or selfies without first obtaining parental permission, that behavior should be addressed. Even if the employee believes he is simply being friendly, it can be unnerving for parents and uncomfortable for other staff and guests who witness it. The restaurant itself was lovely and the food was excellent, which makes this experience especially disappointing. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and reinforces appropriate boundaries with staff when interacting with guests and, particularly, their children. Parents should never have to feel like they need to constantly watch an employee to make sure their child is not being photographed without permission. read more

Lovely, modern space in the old Market Hall location. The desserts were excellent: rice pudding and the homemade baklava (made with mostly walnuts instead of pistachios). It was airy and not too sweet as some baklavas can be. The rice pudding was creamy, almost ice cream in texture and subtle sweetness. The nonalcoholic sodas were ok - didn't have a lot of punch but subtle in flavors as well. Their appetizers were filling enough and meant to be shared, so we didn't order any mains and could try more dishes. The mezze plate with sesame bread was good - the hummus and Turkish feta cheese were ok, but the roasted pepper and topped with pine nuts was delicious and our favorite. The kopoglu - toasted eggplant and peppers over labneh was a bit soggy for my taste. The kofte meatballs with chickpea and red onion salad was tasty. Service was attentive. We ordered the Mezze Trio and the sesame bread that came with it was still warm and crisp from their oven. We loved the red roasted bell pepper spread the most. I love hummus and theirs was good, but a bit lacking in flavor compared to others I've had before. The pistachio cheese one was very flavorful, but had a strong cheese flavor to it. We still enjoyed it immensely. We also ordered the Wild Mushroom Pide (flatbread with cheese, bell peppers and mushrooms), the spiced fries and the beef kebab plate. Everything was so yummy. The beef kebab and rice were spectacular. Full of delicious spices and cooked to perfection. The meat was so tender and the rice was nothing I ever had before. It had pine nuts, squash and herbs and had a very fragrant star anise flavor to it? I was trying to deconstruct it to see how they made it. It was truly a great accompaniment to the beef. The most kind gesture was they brought out hot Turkish tea and baklava for us. The tea was a great pairing to their sweets. You don't really need to add sugar at all. Their baklava is made in house and the highest compliment I can give as an Asian auntie was that it was not cloyingly sweet as other baklava I've had where it sits in honey syrup. I loved it. It was perfectly sweet with slightly sweetened whipped cream on top with pistachios. Although we were stuffed, we cleaned the dessert plate clean. I'm so happy that they're here at 4th street. After checking out the menu, we decided on Divan and we are so glad we did! From the moment we were greeted by the hostess, we already felt welcome! What an absolute gem this restaurant is, highly recommended. Very reasonable prices for a standout experience. Everything is really special, amazing flavors and perfect preparation, every dish we have tried has been delicious. We have been back three times in a month and we live half an hour away with many great restaurants nearby. Try everything you can't go wrong. We especially love the stuffed cabbage, the lamb riblets, the flatbreads and the kebab plates which come with an amazing rice pilaf. The wraps are fantastic. They also have a Turkish family breakfast which looks amazing and is on our list to try. Add to that, the owners and staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and obviously love what they're doing. They brought us tea, and a sample dessert to try which was unreal. The vibe inside is inviting and well appointed with an open kitchen and full bar, and nice booths and tables. Amazing atmosphere. The restaurant is beautiful, the service is exceptional. Even as a soft opening, they killed it on every front. I ordered the Turkish plate for two. It came with freshly baked sesame bread, our first batch was soft and delicious but was a bit cold and seemed like it had been sitting out for a bit. Our second batch, on the other hand, was warm and crispy on the outside with a perfect toast and fluffy on the inside. The platter included and red pepper walnut dip, which was umami and delectable. Turkish feta was also present, which was softer than the Greek or Israeli feta and has more of a sharp cheddar flavor. There were dried apricots and nuts which were yummy and simple. Clotted cream and honey was a classic but delicious combo that paired beautifully with the Turkish feta. The strawberry preserve was again classic but well done. The marinated olives were perfectly tangy and savory. Finally, a cucumber, tomato, and bell pepper salad was placed in the middle. For my taste it was a bit plain. I would have preferred more seasoning or tang in the dressing, but with all the other strong flavors it wasn't harming the dish. With the Turkish breakfast we decided to opt for the çilbir, which is a poached egg in a garlic yogurt sauce with a tomato chile oil on top. This was absolutely delicious, no notes. The yogurt and oil were so flavorful and the eggs were poached to perfection. I will admit that this dish, despite feeding two, was on the pricier side. However, it was also the most expensive item on the menu so I don't think that speaks to the affordability of the restaurant overall. We also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts which were probably the best I've ever had. They were perfectly crisp and not at all bitter, topped with oils and some sort of tomato sauce and crispy bits of deliciousness. The service at Divan was probably the highlight. When we asked for extra bread to pick up all of the delicious sauces we were given a fresh basket without hesitation. When we looked at the dessert menu and decided not to get the baklava, we were surprised with a walnut baklava on the house! The baklava was nice and syrupy with a good mouthful of walnuts inside. Honestly I would have preferred more layers of filo in the ratio to nuts, but who am I to complain about a free dessert! I want to come back here ASAP and try all of the items, not to mention the excitement I feel for their soon to come dinner menu. I definitely recommend this place. So good! read more

Divan is one of Berkeley's best dining experiences. The Mezze Trio was fresh and flavorful--especially the creamy hummus and delicious muhammara--served with warm, sesame bread.
