There is a great selection and variety. I mostly go for the toys. There is a specific toy that I seek and this is the place to find them. While their toy department is not huge and is just a relatively smaller department within the store, what they do have is quality stuff, things that people actually seek out. Lego sets, RCs, educational children's toys, games, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see a decent selection of disc golf discs. They even had some of one of my favorite brands, Kastaplast! Either Kastaplast is finally getting some mainstream recognition or Scheels has a good sporting goods manager. Speaking of which, Ashton is a great guy and truly thinks of the customer first and the customer's experience. There were even Zuca disc golf carts there. And they were all on sale. Another aspect to love about Scheels are the things you can do there like mini bowling, shooting arcade, and the Ferris wheel. You can have a date there for cheap! And then go to the cafe for a meal or treats. BTW, the jerky they sell there is excellent! All the employees there are very helpful. In some small ways, Scheels is better than Bass Pro, Cabela's, Sportsman's Warehouse. In this competitive market, small ways is what stands you apart. I really like those other stores, too, but Scheels just feels different. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. (I had several questions) 10 minutes in golf department. Same story. 20 minutes in BBQ and the two guys there seemed more worried about the display looking great than offering help. The salesperson, Aimee, after understanding what kind of hiking we were planning to do proceeded to measure not just the length and width of the feet but also the arches sitting and standing revealing a small pronation in one foot. She then suggested an insert to Provide support and resulted in complete relief from the rubbing and pinching experienced when trying on various boots.Aimee then proceeded to recommend a boots explaining the different design details between the companies. It was an awesome experience by an exceptionally knowledgeable employee who was truly interested in getting you the right fitting shoe.

What I can say with certainty is that Big 5 is an all-around kind of place. Not so much for outdoors enthusiasts--others excel in that category. If they do edge anyone out it's in the shoe department which is pretty hefty, especially if you're not looking to spend a ton. Hiking boots, running shoes, tennies, and lots in between. But really, Big 5 is about covering the bases (pun intended) and offering a modest selection of everything. My first experience with AJ sports was a couple weeks ago when I came in to buy my kids their first skis. Everyone was helpful and left me feeling like this was a place I could trust. I came back today with the hand me down skis/boots I inherited over a decade ago. I told the staff I had no idea if they were good, or if I needed to get something newer. Beau immediately stepped up and said he'd be happy to help. He spent the next hour with me looking over options at all different price points, pointing out the differences between his recommendations for my ability level. He took the time to not only answer all my questions, but educate me on a sport I didn't grow up around. He was patient and considerate, and listen to me as I voiced certain concerns about some of the options. I ended up walking out with new (to me) skis, poles, boots, and a handful of accessories for me and my kids, with zero buyers remorse. When we go to the checkout line I told my girls they could each pick out a ball from the small bin of balls. I then bent down to look at something on a shelf. I heard an associate very rudely tell my girls that the balls needed to go back in the bin. Not knowing what to say they started to apologize and the associate repeated "balls in bin!" My girls did as requested and walked over to me. I found it extremely rude and unprofessional that the only interaction we had with any one of service was someone scolding my daughters for holding balls that I said I would buy them ‍. The store was nearly empty and I can understand why. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend doing any business with this store, unless you want to have your kids leave crying. .

Even just in this mall (South Town) you'll find Pro Image, Fanzz, and the huge department store sections filled with NFL, NBA, MLB, college football and college basketball gear. But what if you are from another country ... or just like to partake in watching fútbol ... instead of football? Well, the soccer ball on the Castro Sports sign lets you know that you've come to the right place. Barca, Chivas, Real Madrid, and many in the English Premier League, Liga MX, Bundesliga, Mexican soccer, the local MLS team Real Salt Lake, and many teams can be found in their voluminous collection of jerseys. They also have socks, hats, and other accessories from your favorite club. And, while I'm no expert, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to find such strong collections of soccer shoes, balls, and kits most anywhere in the Valley (except, maybe, in the RSL locker room!). This is the good type of Castro Revolution ... a revolution against predictable sporting gear!
