We came in for a nice anniversary dinner at Zuma and walked out with full stomachs, a few surprises, and a bill that made us pause. We started with the sake marinated chicken wings. Incredibly crunchy with a delicious flavor that set the tone nicely for everything that followed. The rock shrimp came out crunchy as well, sauces on the side and a little lemon on top. Enjoyable, though I will say Morimoto still holds the top spot for rock shrimp in my book. We had ordered the spider roll but they did not have it available, so they offered a lobster roll as a substitute. I said sure, not realizing what I was agreeing to price wise. It came out and it was okay. The flavor was interesting, kind of crab like, which could just be how lobster reads on the palate sometimes. But when the bill came and I saw fifty dollars for that roll I felt it. I had assumed it would be somewhere in the same range as the spider roll. That assumption cost me. The spicy tuna roll was a highlight. Real heat, well put together, very good. For the mains, Wifey went with the miso cod and I had the grilled Chilean sea bass. Both were buttery, soft, and delicious. That is the best way to describe them. We also had a baked potato that came with a solid kick of heat, and the skin on it was especially good. To close out the night, Zuma brought us a complimentary raspberry sorbet with fresh fruit in honor of our anniversary. That was a genuinely nice touch and honestly softened the blow of seeing the full bill laid out in front of us. Overall it was a good meal. The food delivered where it counted. Zuma never disappoints. We absolutely love the sushi, and the hand rolls were incredible especially the spicy tuna and salmon avocado. Every single bite was packed with flavor. I'm usually leery of glitzy chains that offer Americanized "Asian" food served up with an impersonal vibe, so had some trepidation about booking dinner at Zuma. However our actual dining experience there was authentic and wonderful. Presentation, service, food quality and value were off the charts. Zuma's sake and liquor menu included some excellent, reasonably priced selections as well. The downstairs dining area is drop-dead gorgeous, decorated with beautiful light tubes and organic wood for a hip yet classy vibe. Ordered the seasonal omakase dinner, a good way to sample a number of dishes on offer. Fifteen+ courses of deliciousness including pristinely fresh maguro, yellowtail, sea bass, and caviar arrived in short order, a treat for the palate and eyes. We were amazed that Zuma's omakase includes yummy cooked items as well; the grilled veal chop and truffle butter baked potato were simply amazing, as was the huge cut-up tiger prawn resting in its own shell. Spicy fried tofu w/avocado salad and veggie tempura were light and healthy. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better a beautiful dessert of fresh fruits, sorbet and chocolate lava cake arrived to top off the feast. Just wow, it was so much food that we had to take some home (no problemo:). We sat at the counter and enjoyed friendly, knowledgeable service by Alan throughout the evening. Hip, club-inspired atmosphere with excellent cuisine but a step down in service knowledge. First, the whole staff needs wine and sake education, both in terms of service and bottle knowledge. Second, there were long stretches where we didn't see the server; keeping on top of customer needs should be job one. The whole process for dining at Zuma was seamless. Making a reservation was quick and easy. A lot of sushi spots in Manhattan don't open until 5 PM--unless they're takeout only--so it can be hard to find a lunch spot that also has a date-worthy vibe. I've heard great things about Zuma globally, as they have multiple locations around the world. I originally wanted to go to the Boston location because of its beautiful views, but the New York one did not disappoint! It was my boyfriend's birthday, so I noted that in the reservation. They gave us a huge table with the best view in the restaurant, and even let us sit at a four-person table so we could sit next to each other and really enjoy the ambiance together. From the moment we walked in, the service was amazing. We were greeted and seated quickly, and the menus were already opened to the first page when we got settled--super attentive! You have to get the salmon, tuna, seabass, and yellowtail with avocado, yuzu kosho mayo, the dynamite spider roll with softshell crab, chili, and wasabi tobiko mayo, and the spicy tuna. The bar is really beautiful as is the hallway leading to the restroom. Volume gets pretty loud around dinner time. Food was average, not great not bad. We shared the calamari, shishito peppers, rock shrimp, spicy tuna maki, toro maki, steak tartare truffle appetizer, skirt steak and desert platter. Standouts for me were the toro maki- very buttery fresh fish and the skirt steak - cooked to perfection and came with the most unique delicious green dipping sauce. Other dishes were just alright especially the calamari (too salty) and rock shrimp (overly fried). We tried a variety of cocktails and wine which were all great. We rounded out the meal by sharing the dessert platter- our favorite thing was definitely the molten chocolate cake! Service was fine although definitely seemed like they were overwhelmed at times. We came to Zuma to celebrate my birthday, hoping for a great night -- beautiful place, good food, nice atmosphere. It started well... until we got to our table. Or better to say, our "seat": at the bar, with our backs to the main dining room and facing the sushi bar. (Check the photos) Instead of soft background music, we heard kitchen chatter and clattering of utensils. Instead of warm, cozy light -- harsh bright work lights shining right in our faces. For $500+ for two people, this was not the kind of experience we expected. We tried three times to improve the situation -- even suggested maybe a small table lamp to make it nicer. But the best the manager could do was send us two glasses of prosecco. (Spoiler: it didn't help- A little advice to management: before giving a free drink, check the bill and offer something your guests actually like. It's a small thing, but it shows care -- especially in a restaurant like this. Otherwise it felt like just a formal gesture rather than real care) And the "cherry on top" was the dessert. We asked them to mark it with a candle or a simple "Happy Birthday" message. Do you think they did it? Of course not. Seems like at Zuma, hospitality stops at serving the food. Now, to be fair -- the food itself was excellent. The quality and taste really deserve 5 stars. But in New York, there are many other restaurants with the same price level where the service matches the food, and you feel like a welcomed guest, not just someone filling a seat. We tried to enjoy the evening anyway, but if it wasn't my birthday, I think we would have just left -- like some other couples did when they got the same bad seating. I came here to update my review of Zuma, why? Because Patricia is one of the best managers of any restaurant I have ever encountered. When I had written the bad review about the space, it was coming from a genuine place of concern for how we were treated, not out of anger. She recognized that, reached out to me personally and gave me her personal number, telling me to come back for a better experience and she would make it up to me. That is EXACTLY what she did. When we arrived, they were so welcoming, saying they had been expecting us, then gave us a table right when we had our reservation time. It was a great view and as I stated before, the restaurant space is very lovely. The decor is modern and speaks to the ethos of the food they serve. The staff is dressed accordingly as well, with a great attention to detail. The rolled out an entire chef's table for us, from nigiri to sashimi to different types of regular sushi, plus plenty of mains and cuts of great kobe. The food was so extensive that we could not eat it all, but everything tasted wonderful. My favorite was the sea bass, however, as it was perfectly grilled and seasoned, and the birthday boat was stupendous. I plan on making this at least a once every quarter trip as the staff was super courteous, Patricia even made sure to be there to say hi, and the food was delicious. The sushi & seafood are always premium quality, one of my favorites from Zuma has to be the fried soft shell crab. The yellowtail is also a must-try. Perfect for special occasions or when you're craving quality sushi. I came to Zuma for a birthday event over the weekend. We were in a private room and it was gorgeous, featuring a longgg wooden table and open bar. The set menu was a seemingly never ending list of Asian inspired food, from sushi and sashimi to lobster to ribeye to desserts. The food was super yummy. I was a big fan of the sushi - the fatty tuna roll with caviar and sashimi platter were delicious - as well as the roasted Maine lobster with shiso ponzu butter and the watercress and avocado salad with wasabi and cucumber (I think I ate like half this bowl alone it was so so good). However, I'll note that I don't know the prices of these items if one were to order it off the menu. They also have bouncers outside the restaurant. I would say they are very strict with their policies and are unable to make accommodations. The max for a group reservation is 10. Anything after that has to be booked as a private party. To start off, the drinks were good and strong. I had the skinny margarita and tried my friend's lychee martini. Both solid drinks. For apps we had chicken skewers, dumplings, and calamari. All very yummy, the skewers were my favorite. For entrees, we had rice, sweet potato, tenderloin steak, skirt steak, tiger shrimp, salmon, corn, & asparagus. They brought out chocolate cake and ice cream for the table & the birthday girl. In terms of taste, I really enjoyed everything.
