The original estimate was done from the ground, however when the technician was able to get the unit out of the frame, (This is an old style window), we both saw that additional work had to be done. Murph is amazing!!! He is an honest man who does great work. The first time I came to Murph was for a check engine light on my car - I told him a previous mechanic had quoted me about $500 for a faulty idle air control valve. Murph said he has worked on Civics for 20 years and has never seen the issue on a Civic, only Accords. He said he can charge me and play around with it if I wanted but he can say for certainty that he thinks the car is fine. He looked at the part, said it appeared fine to him. He reset the light and told me to drive it on the highway - maybe there's too much dust. I did as instructed and the check engine light went off by itself and my car ran fine. The second time I went to Murph was for a bogus car inspection done at Broadway Gas on 320 Broadway. They failed my car and quoted me $1300 for repairs. I took it to Murph and he said he had heard about those guys and to leave the car with him - he'll look at it tomorrow. When I was there, another woman who was waiting came up to me because I looked really upset because of the way I was treated at Broadway. She told me I can trust Murph to be honest and that she only goes to him and tells all her friends to, as well. She said he has a lot of female customers because we often get preyed on at other places. Funnily enough, when I was leaving, 2 other women pulled up. I get a call at 9am the next day. It was Murph who told me he got me the new sticker!! It passed inspection! He said he cleaned off the headlights and even took it to a different garage to save me the hassle and got me a new sticker!!! I was ecstatic! He only charged me $35 for the state inspection because he had paid out of pocket when he took my car there! He is amazing. I took the time to review because I am so relieved I don't have to shell out $1300!!! Murph is the best!! read more

DO NOT GO THERE FOR ENGINE LEVEL PROBLEMS. You have been warned! The only reason this place gets high review is because they do free diagnostics which will not find your real problems. They just plug in their ODB scanner and tell you a code. You can do the same by buying a ODB scanner on Amazon for $20. Here is my story: I own a Prius and engine light turned on. Did some research online and decided to go to this place. Spent $600 for fixing a O2 sensor and a water pump(that's what they told me). Then my nightmare began: My car's engine light keeps coming back and I went back to this place again and again 7 times. The whole thing cost me two month and the problem is still not fixed. Today my car's engine light turned back on again and I went to this shop. They told me it has something to do with the electric water pump which they dont fix. They told me they are going to issue me a partial refund, but I had hard time finding the receipt which I might lost in a car wash. I am not going to waste my time and energy again dealing with these assholes. I will let them keep my hard earned money and never go back. To anyone has not never been this place: If your car's engine light turned on, DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! read more

In 50 years I have never found a mechanic who would look at a problem with my interests in mind -- until now! Murph and his crew at Car Zone are fantastic! Honest and excellent mechanics. Moreover, he has great connections to other top, honest mechanics too. I took in a 99 QX4 SUV for brakes, exhaust work, and 120k mile check up. Murph called and said that I could get really good exhaust work done at Lou's Custom Exhaust in Medford and they could save me money on that part of the work, but Murph et al. would do the rest. They did a great job on the brakes, and on the 120 k check. They informed me that the dealership I used to go to for service only replaced 5/6 spark plugs -- the one that is hardest to reach was original equipment! Moreover, the dealership didn't even use the right plugs! The engine now hums better than ever, and the brakes are great. I then took the car to Lou's as advised - they had the tools, skill and honesty to fix a flange for just $ 50, rather than sticking me for $ 1,500 for a new exhaust and resonator as all other shops in my previous experience would have. Both of these places are great, just great! I could not be happier to have found them. read more

What can you say about Murph and Car Zone that hasn't already been said? He's the best. I've brought my car to him countless times, and I can't tell you how many he's either talked me out of an unnecessary repair that he could've made a buck on, undercharged me or even done a little something "on the house". For those reasons, when the big & totally necessary repair does come, you can be fully confident that Murph is going to quote you a fair price. I really trust him. You can't say that about too many people. For what it's worth, he recently referred me to another mechanic, because if he were to do the repair, it would be "too expensive", as the exhaust specialist could do a localized fix with his special equipment but Murph would have to do a larger one. He didn't charge me for the diagnostic, by the way. Anyway, when I visited the other mechanic (Rob at Bay State Muffler in Peabody, who was also extremely helpful and fair), and I told him I was referred by Murph, he called him "one of the last true gentlemen" and that I was lucky to have him as a mechanic. Wow. When you go to get your car serviced, you hope that at the very least, you will get out without having spent thousands on unnecessary repairs. You certainly don't expect to find friendly, helpful, honest staff who will take the time to show you what needs to be done and why, which is what I found at Car Zone (Honda Zone). I brought my Honda CRV in for a scheduled servicing as well as to ask about some chipped paint and an engine light. Murph spent time showing me how I could fix up the paint myself (even telling me what paint I needed), which surprised me a little. When their computer showed a problem with the catalytic converter, I assumed that regardless of what they saw, they were going to tell me that it needed to be replaced. Instead, they took the time to reset the light, drive the car around the block and examine my system before telling me that the cat. converter that I have was working fine and didn't need to be replaced. Honest, helpful and friendly. I will trust them with any future maintenance needs. read more

I am a single mom with two girls struggling to get by. I for years have used the reviews here on yelp to help me figure out what businesses I can trust with what little money I have. I can not say enough for Murph here at Car Zone. I have a very old Ford Explorer that left me and my girls on the highway this weekend. I had it towed to Murph who had already fixed my brakes last year. He told me exactly what it was and how much it was going to cost. Here is the thing I got there and he told me he noticed my tires needed to be rotated so he did it "no problem" . He never charged me for it. As I was driving I realized my broken seat which rocks terribly while driving was not rocking!! He fixed my seat and never said a word!!!! Who does that??? Murph does that!!!!! I agree with all other users who have given good reviews, this place is amazing, good honest mechanics. I noticed that my car floor was getting because a lot of water was flowing into the car, not sure what it was at that time I called Honda dealer and they told me that it would cost 90$/hr as Labor cost to identify what the issue is, I then called another local dealer and he told me that it was a simple issue, the AC water which gets out from a pipe has been misplaced and he quoted 25$ to fix, when I went to Car Zone for Oil change and told him about the problem, the guy there simply pulled out the pipe(at the bottom of the car near drivers seat) and all the stagnant water just flowed out of the pipe, my AC started working fine and he didn't charge me a cent more.Seriously, give this place a try at least once and you will see the difference. read more

I've been going to Car Zone for years now, and trust almost no one else. Recently, I called and was told that a problem my car was having couldn't be fixed by them, and had to go to the dealer. The dealer fixed that part for a reasonable amount, claimed I needed $1,000 additional in services for my car, and gave me a rejection on my inspection sticker. Took it back to Car Zone afterwards rather than submit to the dealer's scare tactics. They checked everything the dealer said needed to be done, most of it did not, they fixed what needed to be fixed, got my car a passing inspection, and charged me $60. Cannot say enough how above board and honest these guys are about what really needs to be done for your car. I trust my car's life in Murph's capable hands. I got a call from my daughter in Boston yesterday that her new car smelled like something was burning when she drove it, she told me she didn't use it for a while and it was sitting. I live in New York so the first thing I did was look on yelp/google for a trustworthy mechanic to check it out. After reading several reviews I called Murph on the phone and told him the story. He said no problem, have her swing by and he would check it out. After inspection and a good engine cleaning with an air gun, he concluded that a squirrel had made a nest under the hood. He also said there was no damage to the wiring and she should be good to go. My daughter said he wouldn't take money for his time, and he was the nicest guy. I finally met the infamous Murph today and he was just as the other Yelpers described; a very honest, knowledgeable and fair mechanic. Fortunately they were able to diagnose and repair my car quickly. I just waited at the Dunkin Donuts across the street. I took my car in for an issue I've had for almost a year with my steering wheel vibrating at low speeds and at least 3 mechanics couldn't figure out the the problem, nevermind fix it. I also had an issue with rattling underneath the car which he diagnosed as the heat shield. He knew immediately when I described both problems to him and all for $80 which is really shocking. I've recommended him to family and friends and am now glad there's a reputable and reliable mechanic I can trust to service my car! read more

Stopped in fearing that I'd destroyed a plastic rain guard under my car. They put it up on the lift, said that it could be re-attached, fixed it all up, topped up the air in my tires, checked the fluids, and then... told me I was all set and didn't want any payment for the labor. They seemed extremely competent, efficient, and friendly -- and obviously took a repair I thought would be $200-300 and turned it into a $0 repair. This is a reputation system at its best: I went there because of yelp reviews, now I'm motivated to write my first yelp review myself, and clearly they are interested in maintaining their stellar relationship. When I have a larger repair, of course this is the first place I would go. Nice job Car Zone, and nice job yelp! read more

I was terrified of taking my car in because the check engine light was on and I had absolutely no idea what could be wrong. I chose Car Zone because I could walk to where I needed to go from there and because it sounded like they would at least be honest with me. It was a fantastic experience. Murph had me hang out with the car while he ran an engine check and showed me the readout. It turned out the gas cap wasn't on properly. He didn't charge me anything, and said that except for the trouble Honda CRV's of my era have with the check engine light, they are really good cars. "Car Zone" - is no non-sense and the mechanics were honest and straight forward. My inspection failed as I was informed by another mechanic shop that my muffler extension pipe was broken. Murph and his assistant checked and this was not the case. Just some loose metal he removed from under the car that was not necessary to be there. I wasn't charged for it being removed. I own a 1996 Saturn SL2. Over the years I've dished out sooo much $$ on car repairs and have even cried. But thanks to my friend's word of mouth. I found Murph. Very highly recommended. Murph is knowledgeable, honest and personable. He regularly goes out of his way to help you out. If there is a simple fix, he'll tell you and often just do for no charge if it's quick. Besides regularly bringing my car there for service, we brought him a car we were thinking of buying. in addition to checking the car over, he went out and had the window tinting tested. I've had an oil change and a repair job.While its not the most convenient place to get to for me (with a AAA approved repairer 0.5 mile from my house), its well worth the extra driving. I have known Murph for 7 years and every single time I needed help with my Honda Civic, Murph offered the best and most cost effective solution. His work ethic and skills are amazing. You hear a lot about honest mechanics. Murph takes the cake. I came in one week ago knowing I need new brakes and wanted to see what they say. They confirmed that indeed I do, quoted me for $450. Came in today, got brakes done, free oil change to boot, and Murph then took me around the block to make sure everything was running smoothly. Honda Zone is a rare find! Several people recommended the place, so I took a car that I was thinking of buying in for an inspection. Deverson replaced it without testing it- a $1,000 service which did not solve the problem. I later found out it was the amplifier which I replaced myself for $75. I also had an issue with the passenger's seat belt warning light coming on without anyone sitting there which I asked him to look at several times. His diagnosis- "yeah, it comes on without anyone sitting there." Gee, thanks! He also started passing the credit card service fees onto the customer without telling us. He'd say "that comes to $350," swipe your card, then when you looked at the receipt it was for $385. I now take my cars to WAR Automotive Technologies in Malden. They are more proactive at figuring out what's wrong with your car and are more reasonably priced.
