I've been a customer of WAR for a pretty long time, albeit I've been lucky not to have many car troubles in the past few years. But as "luck" would have it, and as I passed my old friends at WAR this morning, I noticed a flat tire. These things always happen when you're feeling out of luck, or when you least expect it. Today was one of those days, and this was about to put me over the edge. I popped into WAR, as it was just around the corner, hoping they would help me out- and what a warm welcome I was given by Will & Miguel. Overall it was a nice experience with them. My car was diagnosed in a chain shop, and they were asking for 1.2k for window motor(totally fine) and regulator replacement. So I quickly swap to WAR Auto Tech and the receptionist, Miguel, was very nice. They checked my car and replace the regulator within a day, and didn't charge me for the motor. Eventually cost me half the price the previous store was asking. Although they did not do the window properly(didn't readjust it so it make noises in high speed), but they fixed the issue free of charge and done it quick. I would like to have them with me next time. read more

This place has gotten even better, now that they've replaced the previous reception area guy (old white dude who always seemed to be in a grumpy mood) with a much more customer-friendly guy, Miguel, who is much more amiable and actually understands the whole concept of customer service. Even more impressive: not only is he blessed with very impressive technical understanding of cars, but he's happy to explain at length why and how particular repairs need to be done or not, even drawing rough diagrams without being asked! In all my +30 years of utilizing countless car shops (both independents and dealerships), I have NEVER encountered anyone who does this, not even close...it's frankly jaw-dropping.. The people at WAR automotive are some of the best mechanics I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I had an a/c issue in a relatively uncommon car and decided to find someone local to me to fix what would hopefully be a small problem. As with most things car, it's never a small problem but the guys at WAR were communicative the entire time. They took the time to not only explain to me what was wrong, but what they were doing to diagnose the issue and what I could do to minimize the cost to repair it. They even showed me the broken parts that had to be replaced and explained how the entire a/c system works. I was treated to timely updates and explanations whenever I called and they made sure to call me every day they had my car. Ha! OK, well, I see it's a pile-on at this point but I am going to heap my praise on top because these guys deserve it. I am what you might call "car-poor." Like house-poor, but it's my beloved 2-seater that is a bit above my means. And Will A. Roberts (WAR) totally gets it. He is not going to cut corners or jerry-rig something to match your budget. This ain't that kind of shop. But just like a skilled doctor can tell you the range of treatments for your condition, and recommend one that is right for you, Will knows his repairs and he knows his customers. My 2001 BMW Z3 Coupe has a mystery electrical drain that the rich lady who sold it to me never got to the bottom of, despite gobs of money and multiple mechanics. Will not only figured out the drain but, facing a root-solution that would have cost thousands, came up with a simple, safe (100% kosher) workaround that worked for me. Anthony, meanwhile, has been awesome with logistics, going out of his way to arrange drop-offs and pick-ups. This past week, the crew at WAR took care of two things for me, including a jammed hood, without charging a dime. Will provided superb customer service from the moment I requested a Pre-Purchase Inspection quote. He was very responsive via Yelp messages and was happy to answer any questions that I had. I dropped my car off overnight and it was ready to pick up by lunchtime the following day. The Pre-Purchase Inspection was performed and I received a paper report. I was told that due to a computer being down, they were unable to send provide pictures of the scratches on the car. This was a mild disappointment as I would have preferred to have received a digital report with pictures for digital recordkeeping. Anthony at the front desk provided excellent customer service! I have been bringing my car here for years. I always recommend them if someone is in need of a mechanic. Fair pricing, good service. If there are different options available they will present them to you. The only negative I can think of is that since they have a good reputation, they always seem busy nowadays. WAR might seem a strange name for a mechanic's shop until you meet the owner, Will. (WAR are his initials. Mystery solved!) Now, Will is the precisely type of person you want to deal with in every business engagement. He is friendly, honest, hard-working, honorable, and an interesting person to have a conversation with. Will stands by his work. My favorite part about working with Will is that he works with you. If he find more problems with your car, he will be blunt and realistic about what needs to be done immediately, pretty soon, sooner rather than later, and in the near future. This allows your to plan your car repair expenses, important if you have a BMW. I followed Will from his old location in Revere to Malden, and for as long as I live in the Boston/North Shore area, I shall be his customer. I first became his customer because he focused on German autos, but no matter what brand I have in the future, I'll be his customer. Now, a lot of your interactions with WAR will be with Anthony at the front desk. He reminds me of the actor Harvey Fierstein; maybe it's the voice. These guys are great, I found them via Today's Auto Collision across the street when I got into an accident about two years ago, I think they are affiliated. What initially won me over is their complete transparency and honesty, they will only tell you the repairs that are absolutely necessary but will still point out the other minor issues so you are fully aware of the cars current conditions. Anthony is very professional, he diligently follows up on the status of the car and also gets your approval before any work is done. He also makes sure that only OEM parts are used. I have come here for oil changes, brake pad and rotor replacement, and more recently to replace the water pump and thermostat issue. It appears there were a few other critical parts that were failing, which they also replaced after notifying me about it. They dealt with my extended warranty company and took care of the admin. They have become my default "go to" for car repairs & maintenance and I don't see that changing anytime soon. read more

My brakes were ruined from a previous place (that I went to many times (5x) because of warranty, they had never fixed the rotors/pads that I had purchased). Then I saw reviews on WAR automotive technology, the man who helped me was amazing. He sent me videos on the brakes/rotors that were having issues (it was warped). Also, it was from the previous place that had installed my rotors. Overall, WAR mechanics fixed the warped rotors and brake pads, tested the vehicle out, and made it smooth and perfect. The price was great and he was such an accommodating worker/supervisor. Would come here again! read more

Just had my tires changed here and I was very impressed. I always used to service our car at the dealership as I was under the impression the people over there were the best. How wrong I was! You can actually find amazing mechanics right around the corner and you don't have to pay humongous amounts for quality services. It seems like the guys at WAR can handle any car: domestic, German, Asian and they offer many services, from a simple oil change to actually replacing your engine, which is pretty cool! I'd definitely be going back whenever I need my car serviced, it simply doesn't make sense to waste time and money with a big dealership when I can have everything I need here. These guys are great! There aren't very many mechanics I trust or think of as trustworthy but I definitely think these guys here are. Anthony always picks up the phone and is very friendly. I went there a few times for an oil change and always appreciate how clean and professional this business is ran. I recently had an accelerator that needed replacing and they did it quick and easy no problem. I dropped it off the night before and by 10:30am I get a call from Anthony saying it's ready! Once I had to go to the local dealer for a recall.... they wanted to perform "extra" work, I immediately called the shop and they guided me through not being overcharged by the dealer.. I went to have my passenger side mirror put back on he ordered the parts and let me decide when to come in wasn't pushy at all and he even fixed my bumper that was falling off and gave me some oil because apparently my car could have exploded ! No charge . He's a great guy definitely go see him . Btw he does more than just tech savy cars (bmws,Audi) I have a old Honda and he knows his way around it perfectly ! 5 stars and he's my forever mechanic now !!! TLDR; If you have a VW Eurovan (or older European vehicle), don't bring it here. Nice service technicians, poor communication experience. They will try to remedy a poor experience, but in the end I regret going there and worry that they might have caused more issues in my vehicle. Probably a good shop if you have a newer/common vehicle with common issues. I had a check engine light come on and the codes read a misfire, and improper airflow. I normally take my van to a special VW shop in Salem because its 20 years old, and regular mechanics don't see a lot of these and tend to get a little confused, but I live in Medford so I thought I would seek somewhere more local for work that didn't seem to be that specialized. I called them up, asked if they were familiar with Eurovans, they said yes, so I made an appointment to get the van checked out. They let me know that the issue was a fuel injector, and they also noticed an issue with a wheel bearing. I liked that they checked the whole vehicle out and made me aware of the issue of the wheel that I didn't even know about. I approved the work, and they said it would be done in 2 business days. After the 2nd day, I called them up and they said it's going to be an additional day because the vehicle was different from what they thought it was, and was more work than they realized. This was an obvious clue to the fact that they actually were NOT familiar with Eurovans. They also apologized that they did not call me up and inform me of this until the end of the day, apparently they are typically more timely with that info. The next day, I get a voicemail near the end of the day that the van is ready. So when I get to the shop, the tech told me that the wheel bearing was actually fine, and the injector resolved the CEL. So when I go to pay, I expect the price to reflect this update, but it's still the same original quote. I asked why, and they said they needed to replace a hose, which was basically the cost of the wheel bearing, and they thought they got my approval, but they did not. So work was done without talking to me, which is not appropriate. I found this frustrating, but didn't think there was much I could do so I went to leave, and when I started my van the radiator fan was running so fast the entire van was shaking (which had never happened before). They got the fan to stop running so fast, and after talking to the tech I was able to lower the price of the service because of all the frustrations I experienced, which made me feel a little better. The quick fix they came up with for the fan did not hold, and I'm going to need further work done to get the fan fixed (new fan, new fan resistors). To replace the fuel injectors, you need to take off the radiator fans, so I do wonder if they possibly broke the fan in the process of doing their work due to unfamiliarity with the vehicle. I looked at the fan and it is missing a chunk of plastic, which can throw it off balance and cause vibrations. Not only that, but after I picked it up, the van started hesitating at certain speeds. I called them up immediately to see why that might be happening, and they didn't have time to talk and didn't return my call till 5 hours later. In that time I called my normal VW tech, and he resolved that issue that night (needed new spark plugs) and found that it definitely did need a new wheel bearing, which was weird because WAR told me I didn't. I also question if I needed a new fuel injector after finding out I needed new spark plugs, but I'll give WAR the benefit of the doubt on that particular issue because the codes did point to an injector. At the end of the day, they just don't know VW Eurovans, which to be honest isn't unusual because it is not a common vehicle. But they list VW vehicles as a specialty on their website and I specifically asked if they know Eurovans to start with. I wish they just told me "no, but we can probably figure it out" because that would have been more accurate. The surprise hose was frustrating as well, but the tech assured me that kind of thing never happens and he did remedy that issue immediately by returning some money. read more
