The highlight of our Hawaii trip! We loved Ginza Bairin so much that we went TWICE during our trip…read more We visited on our previous trip to Hawaii, and it was an absolute must-revisit this time around. If you're visiting Honolulu and love Japanese tonkatsu, do yourself a favor and put this place on your list! The absolute star of the show is the Specialty Kurobuta Pork Loin Katsu. Out of this world! Kurobuta pork is basically the Waygu of the pork world. This pork comes from the Berkshire pig which produces more flavorful, more tender pork. The pork is perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and coated in a beautifully crispy breading. Every bite is exactly what you want from a great tonkatsu. And PLEASE, don't sleep on the unlimited refills of cabbage, miso soup, and rice! The rice deserves its own shoutout. Ginza Bairin serves premium Tsuyahime white rice from Yamagata, Japan, and it is hands down the best rice I've ever had. The grains are plump, fluffy, and delicious, with that wonderful texture that makes you keep reaching for another bowl. Shamelessly admitting that I ate THREE bowls of rice, and I have absolutely zero regrets. My husband doesn't eat pork or beef, so he ordered the chicken katsu and said it was the best chicken katsu he's ever had. That's a pretty impressive endorsement, especially from someone who eats chicken katsu regularly. Families with little ones, this place is fantastic! They're incredibly kid-friendly, with child-sized cups, forks, spoons, and plates. Even better, the kids' meals come in the cutest little blue or pink car-shaped trays that my son absolutely loved. You can choose chicken katsu or shrimp tempura, served with rice, cabbage salad, macaroni salad, and a kids' juice box. It's thoughtful touches like these that make dining out with a toddler so much more enjoyable. The service was amazing, too. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive, making the whole experience even better. A few helpful tips: - Make a reservation ahead of time if you can, but walk-ins are welcome, too. - There are two "restaurants": the main dining room primarily accommodates reservations, while the other side is mainly for walk-ins. Don't worry, the food is impeccable on both sides! - Free validated parking for up to 1.5 hours is available at the Bank of Hawaii Waikiki Business Center underground garage, which is a huge plus in Waikiki. Ginza Bairin checks all the boxes: exceptional food, premium ingredients, generous refills, warm service, and a genuinely family-friendly atmosphere. The fact that we went twice in one trip says everything. This is one of those restaurants that stays on your must-visit list every time you return to Hawaii. Already dreaming about that pork katsu and another three bowls of rice!

They only have about 20 orders available daily, so we always make sure to make early reservations for dinner. It's a small place, so seating can be limited, and although they do take walk ins, you really should make a reservation. Free validated parking is available next door in the parking garage beneath the Bank of Hawaii building. I really like how light and crispy their tonkatsu is here. And the Kurobota katsu just melts in your mouth! If they don't have that available their Bairin Pork Tenderloin Katsu is always excellent too! My girlfriend also likes their Katsu-Dons. Sets come with free refills of rice, miso soup, cabbage, and pickles. Last night they also had several new wagyu additions to the menu that we haven't seen before, along with a wagyu beef nigiri that we had to try and thoroughly enjoyed. Service here is fast and very friendly! We have always enjoyed coming here and the staff take great care of their customers. They also offer a Kamaaina discount for locals with a Hawaii ID, which is really fantastic for people like us who live here and enjoy this place!

I saw that they offer online ordering on Toast so placed an order on our drive over. It was packed and ready when we got there. This meal hit the spot and was plenty for me to make two meals out of. Over the year's the prices have gone through the roof and they turned it into a glorified ABC serving pantry items for on the go. A complete slap on the face for us locals trying to complete a meal. Staff looks at everyone like they are thieves and for me personally a 50 year old male being looked at like a theif is extremely uncomfortable and a complete lack of Aloha to make it so apparent. Pretty much stopped going year's ago but after my last visit to get a few fresh herbs for dinner and seeing their new ABC Prepared foods section I vow to neva return.

We stopped in during their Happy Hour and ordered a spread of their small plates to try a bit of everything--and every single dish knocked it out of the park. We loved being able to sample so many iconic Hawaii flavors in smaller portions. Highlights for our table: Garlic Fries: Generous portion, crispy, and packed with savory garlic flavor. Pork Chops & Garlic Chicken: Golden, crispy, perfectly seasoned, and incredibly flavorful. Teri Beef: Tender, juicy, and perfectly grilled. The service was friendly, fast, and warm, and the relaxed vibe makes it the perfect place to unwind after a day out. HOWEVER, when I got my order I gave the girl back the paper bag because I didn't need it. She gave me a utensil with JUST a plastic knife. When i turned around and said excuse me to ask for a kit with a spoon her IMMEDIATE response was along the lines of "sorry you can't eat out here. You did take out" .......... There's literally no one inside. No one outside. If that's how they train their employees then I am NEVER coming back. And now that I think of it I even felt a certain way when I told her I wanted take out. I tipped her a dollar even tho she did nothing. What a regretful experience as a whole.

Either way, it made for a super relaxed experience with no wait and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the food. Loved: The street tacos with the tempura shrimp were easily the star of the meal. 100% worth it. Light, crispy shrimp with a flavorful slaw and just the right amount of heat--basically a flavor party in every bite. The burger was another quiet star. Juicy patties, nicely seasoned, and stacked just right. Nothing super flashy, but really satisfying. Definitely a good pick if you're not in the mood for brunchy stuff. The Miss: Tried the French toast and... meh. It looked great on the plate but tasted dry and definitely didn't live up to the level of the other dishes. The outdoor seating area is nice, and we were fortunate to get a spot under the shaded tables. We got a Loco Moco to share (mostly to satisfy our toddler's rice craving!). Gravy was great, patty was a little overcooked - but fine, and generally it was a solid dish. Unfortunately, we had to wait 40+ minutes for our order. We might have caught them on a rough day, so overall, would still recommend giving them a try if you have the time and can plan accordingly. Side Street Inn is one of those places we absolutely love returning to! Fantastic local food, enormous family-style portions, a relaxed atmosphere, and wonderful hospitality. Come hungry, bring friends, and prepare to take home leftovers! The Details: Another excellent dinner at Side Street Inn's original location near Ala Moana! If you're looking for authentic local-style Hawaiian comfort food, this place is an absolute gem! Forget fancy white tablecloths and elaborate presentations. This is where local families and groups of friends gather around tables overflowing with delicious food, share stories, laugh, and enjoy each other's company. That's precisely what makes it special! My wife and I stopped in tonight knowing full well we'd be hopelessly outnumbered by the sheer quantity of food we'd order. But that was intentional! We love their food, and the leftovers reheat beautifully. Dinner tonight, lunch tomorrow! What's not to love? Tonight's lineup included three fantastic dishes: 1. Hawaiian Pan-Fried Pork Chops: A mountain of beautifully seasoned, golden-brown pork chops, fried to perfection and piled high on a platter. Old-school local comfort food at its finest! 2. Sizzling Boneless Kalbi Short Ribs: Tender, flavorful Korean-style marinated short ribs arriving on a sizzling cast-iron platter with kimchi. The aroma alone makes your mouth water! Absolutely delicious! 3. Lup Cheong Fried Rice: Oh, my goodness! Their signature fried rice is already fantastic, but adding sweet and savory Chinese sausage takes it to another level! Loaded with char siu, Portuguese sausage, bacon, vegetables, and lup cheong, this enormous platter is practically a meal unto itself. And when I say enormous, I mean ENORMOUS! As wonderful as the food was, I especially want to recognize our server, Celeste What an absolute delight! We learned she's also a high school teacher, and her personality was every bit as memorable as our meal. Vibrant, energetic, full of spunk, and blessed with a terrific sense of humor, she kept us laughing throughout dinner. We got along famously! And I made her groan more than once as she endured my dad jokes...! Celeste checked on us frequently without being intrusive, making sure we had everything we needed. Drinks, napkins, dipping sauces, you name it! That kind of attentive, personable service turns a great dinner into a memorable evening. Celeste, thank you for taking such wonderful care of us! You were spectacular! One thing worth emphasizing is that Side Street Inn is best enjoyed family-style. Look around and you'll see large families and groups of friends sharing some of Oahu's finest local cuisine. My advice? Bring a group, order several dishes, put everything in the middle of the table, and dig in! If you're dining as a couple like we did, embrace the inevitable leftovers. Trust me, you won't regret it! Side Street Inn remains one of our favorite places to eat on Oahu. Outstanding local food, enormous portions, wonderful people, and an atmosphere that captures the spirit of gathering around a table with family and friends. We'll absolutely be back! Mahalo, Side Street Inn, and a special mahalo to Celeste for another terrific evening!
