Recently got together with my old friend, who I haven't seen in a while (he's got some family issues going on, and is also trying to start an acting career in what little spare time he has. He's actually gotten some bit parts in independent films-- a Mafia wanna-be, a low-level thug, a Mafia enforcer, a bodyguard to the Mafia Don. He hasn't quite reached Sydney Greenstreet status, obviously, but he gets an A+ for effort. I've told him that when he gets the part of Seamus McGonigle, mystical poet and creator of whimsical artwork, then he'll know for sure that he's finally "made it" as an actor. Anyway...I digress...sorry...). I rode along as a passenger recently to visit his father in a nearby care facility (a major family issue, obviously, but I talked with his father at the place, and... although he seemed physically frail...we discussed old movies and he still seemed pretty sharp mentally, thank God!) and, afterwards, my friend was hungry, as was I. We weren't all that familiar with restaurants in the area, but he caught sight of Zio Gino in a tiny mall off of Shunpike Rd. and suggested that we try it out. I was agreeable, being both tired and hungry (I had to work the next day and wanted to make as early a night of it as possible). There was enough free parking in the lot fronting the mall, and the restaurant itself appears to be your standard neighborhood pizzeria. As much as I love pizza, I wasn't really in the mood for it. Thankfully, they offer a full-scale sit-down dinner menu. As I do in any Italian restaurant that's new to me, I ordered the Pasta Fagioli, and the lasagna. Service was pleasant, and efficient. Our orders were placed, and we were served with relative swiftness. I can't remember what my friend ordered, but I was served a moderately sized salad, and the soup in a large bowl. It was tasty and plentiful. The lasagna, too, was a large portion, and was tasty. Did it surpass the memory of my late mother's lasagna? No (I judge any lasagna I eat using the yardstick of that treasured memory), but I enjoyed it. Prices weren't cheap, but I can't think of any restaurants these days that serve plentiful portions of tasty food that charge "cheap" prices. Also...it is Chatham. If I have to register any complaint, it would be that the food could have been hotter (was that the result of microwave heating? Maybe. Probably.). I scarfed down everything on the plate and in the bowl, so obviously it wasn't a complaint of such gravity that I was forced to make an issue of it, but...it could have been served hotter. All in all, I'd recommend this restaurant; I'd like to return some day in the near future to try their pizza when I'm in more of a "pizza mood." And they also deliver and do catering. Anyway, It's nice to even be acknowledged and greeted when you walk in with a smile, you know.. that decent civilization stuff that's becoming less common? The young lady working was as perfect as can be and the pizza was good and hit the spot. Young, polite, hardworking people like her is what's missing from the workforce these days. We ordered delivery for the first time. Pizza was a 3 and the entrees were a two. The eggplant parm was pretty good. The meatballs were not that great, and the bake ziti was real mushy. Maybe we caught them on an off night. read more

This is a family owned business with a completely homely charm. I started with the mozzarella sticks, and a ceasar salad wow the best dressing I have ever had! Zio Gino's has excellent pizza - my whole family Loves it! We also love the arugula salad with chicken, delicious! We order pizza kits, zeppole kits and garlic knots on the regular. Always quick delivery and delicious food. We love making the pizza with our kids. It comes with an over abundance of cheese, toppings, and sauce. I can't tell you that this place has the best pizza in the area, because I'm not from the area, but I can tell you that I had two great slices here. Stopped in before my daughter's last high school field hockey game for a quick lunch. Place is pretty small, 6-8 small tables, but it was spotless-including the bathroom. Normal pizza joint decor and I love that they are willing to support the local sports teams with sponsorships. Guy greeted me when I walked in the door and was super nice. I ordered a plain and a sausage slice-pretty much staples in my pizza review process...if you can't get these right then you need to close up shop. Well these slices were generous and delicious. The plain slice was very tasty-cheese was tasty with a nice saltiness and the cruse, though a little thin and slightly underdone for my liking, was excellent (I like my crust slightly well done). The sausage slice, from the first bite, was amazing. Again, the crust was a little underdone for my liking, but it was delicious. The sausage was really tasty...not the best I've ever had, but it was right up there. The sauce on the slices was a little less than I normally like, but it was very good-not sweet, a little savory. I was very impressed with the pizza here. I probably won't be back in the area until next fall's field hockey season, but when I am...I'll be back. Great job guys! read more

Just a very average experience. The delivery guy that answered the phone was a D-. Pizza was 5.6 on a 10 scale. Too many better option to go back. This was the second chance we gave them. I moved to the area about 18 months back and had to discern the basic necessities of life; a great pizza joint being near the top of the list. I used Yelp ratings and reviews at first, but then I stumbled across this unassuming place on the way home. The pizza is competitively priced and always ready for pickup in about 20 minutes. The crust is thin, crisp, with just the right amount of chewiness. The owner greets you warmly as you walk in. Seating is limited, so anticipate takeout or delivery. I really enjoy Zio Gino's. They regularly have grandmother's pie and Sicilian slices as well as a variety of pizza topping slices. Their pasta selection is good and I love their arugula salad (a huge portion!) Their staff is generally very nice and I love talking to the owner when he's there. They repainted within the last year and I really like the new more polished interior. Their garlic knots and zepoles are equally addicting. read more

Zio Gino is my go-to place in Chatham for Italian food. My favorite item on their menu is the Chicken Parmesan, but the Chicken Taormina is also amazing. Walked in and ordered take out. The penne vodka was really delicious. The best I have had in the area. Cavatelli with broccoli and sausage was equally as good. Portions were good as were he prices. I hesitate to even give this restaurant one star. The food is subpar, and the service abysmal. Not only was our food awful, but it didn't even come out on time. One of our party of two had to wait for 15 minutes more for a small pizza which he took to go at that point. Theizza was actually quite tasty-but it was eatmen at home. The pesto I ordered was floating in oil and the waitress forgot the chicken I requested. What makes it even worse is that we were one of two occupied tables--we should have had stellar service and food! Not recommended ever! Ordered food at 7:55pm and it wasn't delivered until 9:40pm!! Are you kidding me. They have delivered to our house a few other times and the first time they even messed up the address but we let it slide. I had to call the owner and ask him where our food was. He tried to tell me that our phone number was out of service and he had the wrong address. He never told me he was sorry or anything. This was his fault not ours! When the food finally arrived it was COLD and NASTY! I had to ask him to take money off the bill since he never offered. As far as I am concerned the food should have been free and he should have shown good faith. He just lost a customer for good! the food is not that great to begin with but it's local.
