I'm not sure if it was the employee's first day but this was the SLOWEST and WORST sandwiches we have ever ordered. I would give zero stars if I could. The Pisa and Muffuletta were an absolute joke. The Pisa's eggplant was UNDERCOOKED and INEDIBLE. The Muffuletta was extremely dry and barely had ANY olives or oil. The worst Muffuletta I have ever eaten. I have so much love for Zia's! When I worked in Davis I would walk over here for lunch all the time. Now, I get to stop in less often but it's always consistent and lives up to my memories every time. On my most recent visit I stopped in on my way back from the Bay Area around 1pm. I ordered their muffaletta, which is a new addition since I was last there, along with the milano and a build your own sandwich. The team there was friendly and was able to help me quickly. While they were making my sandwiches I browsed the small shop and picked up some treats and drinks to pair with the sandwiches. As I was heading out with my order the line was growing again- they're a popular spot. I took everything home and we enjoyed the sandwiches a lot. Sandwich was pretty sad. I went off other reviews from a few years ago and theirs clearly had a lot more meat... I get it, it's rough. Just charge an extra $2 and give a good product if you're trying to save product costs. Also, There was a guest who got locked In the restroom, check camera's around 12:20pm... The women told an employee their partner was stuck. So he then used his hand to push the push door open (locked from one side) and proceeded to continue to make people's sandwiches without changing his gloves. Come on dude... that's disgusting. I had the Mufaletto sandwhich and it was pretty good. The size of the sandwhich is decent but not super big. There's no seating indoors, there are small tables in front of the delicatessen but they fill up fast. The bread was far too thick, completely overpowering the fillings and throwing off the balance of the sandwich. With how much time our kids spend playing soccer in Davis, we were really hoping to find our go-to sandwich spot -- but this won't be it. That said, we may give them another try for their Italian sweets or specialty goods. But for sandwiches, we'll be looking elsewhere. read more

Wow wow wow What a find during my walk around the downtown streets in Davis today! I peeked in the windows and smiled, then happily wandered in and gazed upon all the meats cheeses and desserts in their window cases as well as all the unique amazing pasta sweets foods and jars of deliciousness for sale on their shelves. I chose the their baddaass sandwich with turkey smoked mozzarella w veggies and basil aioli and added salami on a chewy soft bakery roll along with a bag of incredible Community brand spicy jalapeno kettle chips, a lemon bar and a chocolate chip caramel brownie. All of it was phenomenal deliciousness and fresh and very affordable! I grabbed a bottle of amazing organic olive oil too. I will be returning regularly from now on !! Excellent Job! This place was recommended to me by my coworker in Davis. She said it was so good that her and her friends went back in a matter of days! I've been wanting to try this out, especially the sandwiches since that is what they are known for! I tried their specialty sandwich called Pisa. This sandwich was on a deliciously soft sourdough roll. This sandwich had roasted Italian peppers, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar. We had this delivered and the service was quick. I need to go back in person to experience the actual ambiance. I appreciated how they put my sandwich and name on my sandwich to distinguish who ordered what. I will definitely come back to Zia's. Great deli, could work on customer service. Want to give 3 stars but don't have the heart, just too many good experience to the few bad. Fairly regular here, ordered online and showed up a little early (12:35 to a 1:15 ready time) incorrectly assumed letting them know I had arrived would enable them to make the sandwich a bit sooner. Nope, watched 3-4 full lines of people come and go then got a snarky it'll be ready at the estimated time. Felt a bit disregarded as a regular and almost a go away feeling from the staff today. Anyways I'll be back and I'll update the review to 5 stars I am sure at some point. We all have off days, but this felt particularly bad. These off events have happened a few times, so that doesn't feel great either. Again it's a small local shop! So give it grace and the staff did do their best I think. Sandwiches are dependent on who makes them which gives it a bit of charm, but more than a few times has it had an overabundance of mustard or mayonnaise or just skimping on peppers. 4 stars for the sandwiches most the time and the staff is usually on point. read more

EXCELLENT tiramisu. I had the sandwiches too but I think what thrilled me most was to find the little containers of tiramisu labeled 'tiramisu' in the fridge beside the checkout counter. Oh my gosh! I have loved this place for forever! But the viariggio is amazing!!! Turkey pesto cheese tomatoes it is so good! The sauce is so good, creamy pesto... The Turkey is thinly sliced - every now and then I think it's a little too much but over all it's delicious! Ps the bread is perfect! The Asiago pasta is something to write home about too... not overly creamy, the pasta the olives beautiful! Both are must haves! read more

I have loved Zia's over the years and have purchased a lot of sandwiches here. My experience yesterday was not great. I ordered a tri-tip sandwich and a Firenze (grillied turkey panini). When I got home, I realized the tri-tip sandwich was actually roast beef (even had the RB written on the wrapper) and the Firenze had more cheese than actual turkey. The quality and accuracy has definitely been slipping recently. I want to support this local business but something is happening to make the quality less than it was. I had ordered online so everything with clearly written out, so whoever made the sandwich must not know the difference between tri tip and roast beef or thought we wouldn't notice. Disappointing. If I order from here again, I will now have to unwrap my sandwiches and check them in the store to make sure they were done right (kind of like having to check fast food orders) which saddens me. read more

It was my first time at Zia's and I'm pleasantly surprised! Sandwiches are normally pretty basic, so I didn't think to come here at first. However, this place has been a staple at Davis for a while, so I thought I had to check it out! Boy am I glad I gave it a shot! I got smoked turkey in my sammie and it was delicious you can taste the quality of the ingredients here! Grocery store deli meat doesn't hit the spot like this place does!! They're also known for their pesto mayonnaise which I had to try! Definitely brought the whole sammie together and made it a special experience compared to chain sandwich restaurants! I was able to place an order online the day before and arrived around 10:10 am (they open at 10). They had my order ready by 10:20 am and I was like a kid in a candy store seeing all their Italian products in the shelves. Talk about a hidden gem! I am almost embarrassed to say that I had never heard of Zia's before eating there for lunch yesterday. I wholeheartedly regret not going sooner. I ordered their Viareggio Specialty Sandwich - a turkey, smoked mozzarella cheese, pesto-mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato stuffed sandwich that absolutely hit the spot. the ingredients all tasted fresh and delicious but what really knocked it out of the park for me was the special "Zia's Pesto-Mayonnaise" that tied the whole thing together. Not to mention their excellent service. The person who helped me was beyond kind and even helped me with the pronunciation of some of the menu items (I am afraid I am not well versed Italian). The wait wasn't long at all but they still apologized for the delay - they aren't aware I would have waited much longer to eat a sandwich that good. And even if I had waited longer, spending any amount of time inside the deli is a treat. Do keep in mind though that their hours are only from 10am to 3pm. So if you're looking for a sandwich later in the day you'll be all out of luck here. I may have to try a few more of their menu items before I make bold statements like "Best Sandwiches in Davis" - but do know it may very well be deserving of such a title. read more
