I ended up having a California roll and a shrimp tempura roll and salmon sashimi. The sashimi was excellent.!!!! The California roll was really good. The shrimp temporal roll was good but I didn't think it was great. Most shrimp tempura rolls I've had -the shrimp that's in the roll has a batter and it's a little bit crunchy and then it has a little flakes of batter on the outside of the roll. This one had seaweed as the outside of the roll. it just felt like it was missing something. The sauce on it was really good though .Just wouldn't be my first choice in the future. My niece had sweet-and-sour chicken & loved it! My brother-in-law had a chicken noodle dish which he also thought was excellent and serving size was so much, he brought home. I think Zen is a solid 4 stars. It was also definitely overpriced... Again, with other restaurants in the vicinity, I think because of the location and building, you're paying for ambiance. I ordered Spider, Philadelphia, and Chicago. The spider roll is supposed to have soft shell crab. While this one did, it was not have the dominant texture or taste of the roll. Most Spiders also don't have spicy mayo on top... The Philadelphia roll was good and basic. Chicago roll was also good. I took off one star for price and because I also stood in the doorway with several staff passing by without acknowledging me. It would have been nice to have been told someone will be with me shortly or welcoming me. I have been in Beloit a lot recently for work. This is my favorite restaurant by far and I've tried quite a few places. I love the ginger dressing salad, the rainbow roll, and if you want something warm and comforting- the beef Udon noodle is delicious - just be warned- the bowl is very large. What a welcome surprise to find a super delicious sushi place in Beloit, WI. I'm always leery of sushi places in the central US. After so many bad meals over the last 5 days up here I wasn't expecting much but this place is so above expectations for small city USA! From the moment you walk in till the time you walk out you will feel transported to a major city with this place. I am allergic to fish and shellfish so I have always enjoyed Zen because they have the angry bird roll. I ordered online the angry bird roll with some other items and made sure to note "No Eel Sauce" due to my allergy. Upon receiving my food, the roll had eel sauce on it. I called to inquire if the sauce actually contained eel & the manager, Jan, confirmed it did. I explained to her that I had noted "No Eel Sauce" and she continued on arguing with me that I did not note "No Eel Sauce". After a few minutes of back and forth, Jan hung up on me. I further reviewed my online order and called back to explain my email confirmation noted that I had put "No Eel Sauce" and I could not eat the roll I was given. Jan told me there was nothing she could do because it was not noted. I explained I would come in and show the email and that all I wanted was my food. She again, hung up on me. I went to the restaurant and a boy, Carter, came to talk to me. He told me, it was noted that I had put "No Eel Sauce", but he didn't know what I didn't want eel sauce on. I explained I only ordered one roll that contained eel sauce. He continued on explaining there was nothing he could do. I explained all I wanted was my roll and he said Jan directed them not to make me a new roll. I then expressed that I genuinely can not eat the roll with eel sauce because I would die and Carter laughed and said, "Well then don't eat it. I don't know what to tell you.". I was in awe at this experience. Genuinely speechless that I did in fact note I wanted no eel sauce, they did not accommodate to me with a severe allergy, I was hung up on twice, laughed at, and treated with extreme unprofessionalism. Let me start by saying this establishment states they pride themselves on high quality food. This means nothing if you don't have exceptional Customer Service. My daughter ordered online. Specifically asking for no eel sauce as she is allergic. I've added a picture for reference. She got home with her food and eel sauce was on her roll. She called Zen and spoke to the manager Jan explaining what happened, hoping to go back and pick up a new roll. Instead, Jan was unprofessional said nothing could be done and hung the phone up. My daughter drove back to Zen hoping for resolution. She then spoke to a gentleman named Carter who was rude, unempathetic, and unprofessional. My daughter explained the situation, showed him her order confirmation, and let him know she was allergic to the sauce. He stated " well we are not making a new roll so your going to just have to eat it and see what happens". I am blown away that this establishment would treat a paying customer like this. It wasn't like she was asking for a discount, or a replacement of her other food that was now sitting at home getting cold. All she wanted is what she paid for. What happened to giving your customers a good customer experience? My family and I frequently eat at Zen and I am shocked this is how they would treat a customer especially when it was their error. My sister arrived before us so she already had a table when we got there. The place is pretty nice - clean and spacious. Bathrooms are shared with another restaurant next door. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We ordered a few different items: monkey brain, jalapeño poppers, ahi tuna tower, yellowtail carpaccio, crunch combo, vegetable fried rice, and avocado & eel roll. We had sushi just two weeks prior in Chicago, and maybe I should've tailored my expectations based on the location we were at, but the raw sushi was not of great quality. I enjoyed the cooked items we ordered more, but something about them seemed a bit too rich and stuffed rather than fresh. I had ordered a to-go order that was missing a roll , when I called to talk to someone the manager was extremely rude. They told me that all my rolls were in the containers and that I was wrong . It took them over 15 minutes to finally agree to make the roll again and for me to come back and pick it up. The manager then tried to make me the cheaper roll even though I told her what roll is was specifically missing. Overall, I would not go back or order from them again. I used to recommend them to everyone but after my experience today I will not be. It was the biggest customer dissatisfaction I have ever experienced. Start to finish this was great. The staff was very friendly when I walked in. Sat down and my waiter came over and greeted me with a smile. Everyone from the staff was extremely friendly including the owner who came around to each table and took a couple minutes to speak with everyone. The food was excellent. I started with the Shu-Mai and got the OToro, Tuna and Wagyu Nigiri and a Badger Crunch Roll. All of it was excellent. And to top it all off the kitchen sent me a special tuna dish out. When I asked what it was my waiter said it was just something that the chefs had put together. But if you ask me they should add it to the menu. Definitely one of the highlights of my meal. Many of the bad reviews on here are of the bad customer service not the food. food is mid service is trash. they made me feel dumb and bad for making an effort to get my order right all the while me apologizing for their mistake and not once did they apologize. I had asked for no sea food in my california roll and i still got crab. their excuse to not want to remake it for me was "it's imitation crab" (which is still made from fish & their website doesn't specify imitation crab) i had to drive back from all the way home to tell them with 10 minutes to spare and they told me the whole kitchen crew was gone, before the restaurant closed. wish things could have been different i hear many good things of this place. there was only one mexican girl that actually made me feel better than the rest of the crew this was my second and last time going there. read more
