Just came here for the 5th time with my boyfriend and his parents. They loved the sushi and the entrees. The fish is always super fresh and never leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I am primarily a take out/delivery order customer so I always lower expectations as anyone should. They get 4 stars because they always get the order right, deliver on time and food is fresh/tasty even when I order an item with a raw component to it. I've been to Zen four times and I have always had a positive experience there. Very clean, good food, fresh and fairly priced.

FINALLY there is a spot hereabouts for fresh Asian food that is not over-sauced or overcooked. The vegetables always have a nice snap. The shrimp are of a solid quality, and never have that nasty, chlorine-like taste. The hot and sour soup is particularly good. All this being said, if you like your dishes with some heat, you must specify this; don't count on on the designation on the printed menu. We have been to Zen quite a few times, and service has been excellent every time. Sometimes the music seems to be too loud, with a pounding bass. Polite requests to have it turned down have been dealt with graciously. All in all, Zen is a reliable and reasonably priced alternative in Danbury. read more

Tl;dr: Traditional sushi is amazing, is right up there with Ki Asia. Service is sub standard, California roll is mostly cucumber not a lot of avocado. Expensive. Ki Asia is still the best in the area. I had high expectations going into zen. Here is how it turned out. Pros: The freshest best Ala carte sushi I've had. Nice atmosphere and decor. Cons: Very substandard wait staff. Had to wait a long time for water, had to be reminded to get us our wine, couldn't get a hold of him to get the check (many people around us were having the same experience. California roll was almost all cucumber, very little avocado or imitation crab. Weirdly enough the spoons for the miso soup were bad enough to be worth mentioning. The spoons made it so the seaweed and tofu get caught on the spoon making it very difficult to drink at once. If all you care about is your sushi, this is the best spot on Westside Danbury. This is our go-to sushi spot. We love that it has a wide range of fresh sushi and Japanese options, but also has hibachi, Thai, Chinese, etc. With four kids, this is key. They can all get something they like without an issue. From my sashimi loving 6 year old to my "lo mein with no vegetables" 11 year old. There is something for everyone. The ambience inside is fantastic, and the wait staff is kind and accommodating. Even when it is crowded, we are always given a spot to grab a drink at the bar or offered a drink. But what we love even more is that they DELIVER! This is literally the icing on the cake. We don't have many great delivery options in this area, so having Zen is a life saver for my family of 6! They usually take about 45 minutes to deliver on a busy night, but I know that at this point and just make sure to order ahead. It's no problem for us. Good things come to those who wait! read more

I have tried the new Zen Restaurant in Danbury last night! It was great!! My kids loved the little dumplings and enjoyed the sesame chicken! Me and my wife had some sushi. Best sushi in town! The California roll and the spicy tuna rolls were fresh and the best i have had! We also had the crispy duck and there fried calamari. The food quality has deteriorated considerably. The last time I was there, the sushi (which used to be quite good) was stale and crusty. The hibachi steak was literally inedible. They evidently have not cleaned the draft beer pipes as the beer was sour and warm. The service was cheerful enough, but management is distracted and surly, bordering on the belligerent. read more

My wife and I really enjoy sushi and we have had the pleasure of experiencing sushi all over the world. We have eaten at most of the sushi restaurants around the area and Zen is one of the best there is. The Atmosphere is always great, the sushi chefs are amazing and the quality of the food is outstanding. We have many friends who go on a regular basis and I even use Zen for corporate entertaining when I have visitors or business meetings. We have never had a bad meal or an issue with service. The only reason I am giving it any stars at all is because its not possible to give it zero. Terrible, terrible terrible, in all phases. Although I have been to Zen numerous times, it has gone downhill steadily to the point where it is now dreadful. Recently my wife ordered the steak and shrimp hibachi. The steak was so fatty and tough it was wholly inedible. The manager agreed but rather than offer a refund he stated that we could have a free meal at our next visit. When we returned, the manager refused, saying he would only give us the steak portion of the meal. When we politely said that was not the offer (I'm not exactly sure how he would be giving a portion of the meal in any event). We pointed out that we were obviously willing to pay for my meal but that the offer was that my wife's meal would be comped. He became hostile and overtly belligerent suggesting that we were accusing him of lying. We said we were not making any accusations, simply asking that the restaurant honor the commitment it made to us. He was arrogant and unpleasant simply repeating "thanks good bye". We told him we would not return. Again he said "thanks good bye". So we left without dining there. I have rarely encountered such poor customer relations. I will be advising my many friends who frequent the establishment not to patronize the place. On top of this rude treatment, the food quality has diminished substantially. read more

We had friends and family come out to Zen to celebrate my 26th birthday over hibachi dinner. The food was good but unfortunately there was something bad in the food because my wife got food poisoning. She has been extremely sick and I wouldn't wish the pain she's going through upon anyone. I called in just to make them aware that there might be something hazardous, to potentially not serve other people the same batch of food. The person who picked up the phone said I couldn't speak to the manager because they were busy and hung up the phone on my face. Disappointed with this place and will probably not go back. read more

I have probably been to Zen four times in the approx. six weeks since they've been open. What I love most about this new restaurant in Danbury is that the atmosphere is cool and contemporary without sacrificing service or taste. Most Asian restaurants have a rather dated look about them, but Zen exceeds the rest with a cool industrial design that is similar to Max 40 next door. We are always seated quickly and every table is good in the front restaurant portion (I haven't eaten in the back for hibachi). Each table is given a complementary bowl of garlic edamame to enjoy before food. The sushi is TOP NOTCH and super fresh (lots of interesting variety), as well as some of their signature dishes like crunchy sesame chicken and general Tso's chicken -- all prepared in new and interesting ways. The drinks are always great, and the portions are MORE than enough. You def. get your money worth here. This is an excellent addition to an already impressive food scene in this part of Danbury. Parking can be a bit of a situation because it's a small lot for two restaurants and a wine/liquor store, but you can also park across the way and walk over in 30 seconds. Not the traditional Chinese restaurant. Very nice layout. I sat at the bar (great variety of drinks). The steamed dumplings, along with the General's chicken, were both delicious and portions were very generous. The staff was hard working, to the point of being over worked. As a huge fan of Zen's sister restaurant Toro in Newtown, I give Zen the same high praise I give Toro. What I appreciate about these restaurants is the consistency. I know what to expect when ordering takeout or sushi and that is quality food at reasonable prices. The decor is new and fresh as compared to the other similar Asian restaurants in the area which I also appreciate. The service is always fast and accommodating. There is a wide variety of entrees from traditional Chinese, Sushi, and some fusion plates. While it isn't the fanciest food i've ever had, it is definitely on the higher end of Chinese takeout and the restaurant itself is someplace I wouldn't hesitate to take my family or friends. I haven't had the hibachi yet but am sure it will be great as well! read more

My husband and I stumbled upon this Asian gem last weekend on a quest for something different. The owner, manager, bartender and kitchen staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. When I inquired about certain ingredients, the manager quickly said they would make me something special. To top it off, the bar is great (kudos to whoever made my Blue Hawaii!!!) and the food was excellent. We will definitely be back. This is our new favorite spot!! read more

Great place. First time for me, third time for my family. They had hibachi, hosted by "Jet Blue" (Benjamin), who expertly prepared the hibachi dinner without resorting to the insult of an Asian version of a Disney performance. Enjoyed his conversation so much we stayed after dinner to watch the end of a football game together. The sushi deluxe was exquisite...extremely fresh, flavorful, tender. Note: tip your hibachi separately and in cash. Your tip on your bill is split between the wait staff and your chef, so distribute your appreciate accordingly. Serves a great variety of delicious Asian food which also seems to appeal to Caucasians since they constitute the majority of the diners whenever we visit.
