5 stars for the Szechuan dumplings with hot oil alone; in fact my husband and I just agreed we need two orders of them from now on (they are good leftover!). The dumpling wrappers are so thin and a little chewy, much better than any other takeout ddumpling I've had. The sauce is just spicy enough but not too much for me. Definitely one of the best Chinese takeout in the area. They have lots of menu choices and online ordering. Food is consistently tasty and I find it to be much less greasy than many others in the area. Plaza has plenty of parking for pickup and staff is friendly. Prices are always on par with your average Chinese takeout as well. While I don't think they deliver it is well worth the drive for me. read more

Ordered take-out from Kai's and boy am I glad I did! The shrimp with lobster sauce was delicious! I'd say compared to all of the other takeout places I've tried near me in Sherman, Connecticut/new Milford, Kai's in Pawling the best! Also got another one of my Chinese, takeout staples, the subgum wonton soup. A generous portion of broth mixed with different vegetables, sliced pork, chicken and shrimp and about 4 to 6 glorious wontons! What makes these wonton special is that the rapper is a very thin delicate dough. Not like your typical takeout Chinese places that use that thick gloppy dough with a tiny portion of meat filling. On a Iscale 1. -10, this soup was a 10.! We also ordered the Mushu chicken. Personally, I thought it was wonderful with thick juicy pieces of delicious chicken in your standard Mushu shredded vegetables and sauce. However, husband does not like heavy garlic and didn't care for it as much because it was a bit on the garlicky side, (which I'm sure most people would prefer) so next time I will ask for it to be light on the garlic. I have been going here for many years. A couple of weeks ago I called for a takeout of 2 Szechuan wonton orders (10 wontons per order as per menu) & 2 of their Philly cheese steak fried rolls to go. I usually go in person to order; NEVER made orders over the phone. I picked up the order & when I got home there were ONLY 9 wontons in each container. At first, I thought an error...then the 2nd container had ONLY 9 wontons, I realize it was NO error but a RIP-OFF. Today, I ordered these wontons in person. I mentioned to them about the miscount of the wontons. She gave me 11 wontons; only ordered 1 order, tho. They owe me one....LOL Anyhow, had another issue with them today. So after trying all the local Chinese food spots, we've found that Kai's is the most consistent with the quality food & best pork fried rice around. I also really like their wanton/egg drop soup. My boyfriend is a big fan of their general Tso's chicken. Fried dumplings are great. Never had an issue with missing items in an order & the prices are reasonable. One time I was about to order the crispy eggplant and the lady advised me to try it next time we dine in instead because if you do it as takeout the eggplant is not as crispy by the time you get home. I appreciated that because who wants soggy-ness when it's supposed to be crispy. Looking forward to trying that eventually. We haven't dined in yet (due to Covid) but this place is always bumpin' with pickup orders which tells you it's got to be good! read more

Very very disappointed- after not having takeout from them in 3 years or so the quality and taste has tumbled. The fried eggplant was always sooo good, now it's more corn, broccoli and carrots then eggplant and the sauce was a different color, and too sweet. Hot and sour soup and eggdrop soup lacing in flavor and the scallion pancakes needed scallions and were like eating a pita! We were very unhappy with our food. read more

Their steamed white rice is so good and fragrant because they use jasmine rice. And might I add they have so much variety. Also they have many options for people with dietary restrictions like me (sensitivity to gluten and soy). Their spice levels are so good and it's perfect for a nice kick of heat and numbness. I used to love this place, but they changed owners or chef and the food is no longer the same. We couldn't eat it. The rice was hard and the vegetables and onions were huge. I was just there to pickup and they got the order wrong I tried to get it corrected and all I got was a bad attitude, last you will see me.

I'm not sure what is happening with Kai's lately. Last week they forgot to give us an item in our order and we had to return to get it. Last night we ordered the hot and sour soup along with the spare ribs. The soup had virtually no spice to it and I had to add it myself. The ribs were very dry and difficult to chew. This place used to be the best Chinese food around and now I've had consecutive poor experiences. Based on the last two orders, my three stars are very generous. I'm hoping they get back to the way they were previously. I'm wondering if anyone has had similar experiences? read more

The owners are so nice and the wife is very honest and tells exactly what the food is going to be like the crispy eggplant is going to be soggy once I get home and it's better to dine in and extra spicy is going to be spicy! Which I love! I love their Mongolian beef extra spicy and it's super spicy and they're so good. Ordered KungPo Bean Curd thinking it was soft like MaPo tofu but the description says FRIED- so totally my fault. It was on the sweet side for me but my husband liked it! He said it's his favorite Chinese restaurant now and he's usually very picky. Also the Pan fried wonton with garlic sauce was good and a little sweet. Maybe I'll ask extra spicy and less sweet next time! Overall everything was very good and we'll be supporting our Asian Family owned restaurants like this anytime!!! Contrary to what it says at the top of the page, Kai's is open for business after a short hiatus. I can't say enough about Kai's! They are the only Chinese Restaurant in the area that can actually cook the food properly and not turn out a greasy take-out mess. Last night, I ordered the Chicken Fried Rice and Steamed Chicken Dumplings. The fried rice wasn't oily or greasy and there was actual shredded chicken in the fried rice and there was a lot of it! The dumplings were very large and flavorful. I drive over fifteen miles and right past two other Chinese Restaurants, just to get to Kai's. It's that good! read more

Wow! Really good quality take out food. Probably the best in the area! The wonton soup had a nice rich flavor and came with 5 wontons unlike others that give you 3 or 4 if you are lucky. We ordered the orange chicken and it is large enough to share. It is fresh and not too sweet but had great flavor. The broccoli was firm and crunchy not soggy and saturated with gloppy sauce. Fried rice was not greasy but light and flavorful. I have to say, I am pretty impressed and am making this my new local go-to for takeout. Cold noodles were pretty good too. Prices seem average. I know I can get my childhood favorites of Young Chow fried rice and chow Hong fun noodles and count on it to be good. There are new owners and it has been going steadily downhill. For my past three orders, something was either not in the bag or the order was not right. My last order was just not very good. It was bland and the freshness seems to gotten lost. For a Saturday night, it was dead. Under the old owners, a Friday or Saturday night was at least a 40 minute wait for take out. We have always LOVED the food and friendly service at Kai's. We have never minded the wait because the food has been phenomenal. Unfortunately, we ordered food a couple of nights ago and noticed that the quality and flavor have changed significantly. There is less flavor and spice and sadly, items like the chicken and broccoli entree, do not taste as fresh as they once did. We are unsure if the ownership has changed, but there appears to be new front end and kitchen staff. Truly sad as this was a wonderful restaurant and a favorite of ours for many years. read more

I got General tso tofu and it was really good. I haven't had the chicken general tso in a while but from what I remember it is better than anyone's gt chicken. We got it with brown rice and they did not up charge for it. Super fresh food and seasoned well. My hubs got egg drop soup/ egg roll and vegetable garlic sauce. He liked everything as well.
