She had the most gentle smile, and she genuinely cares about what she's doing based upon her communication with us. She was new and was honest about the menu option that she was aware of and what she did not know she went and researched! She is off to a fantastic start, and she was most impressive. Now let's talk about food, outstanding! We had a variety of things that my friend ordered. I didn't even look at the menu. The dumplings were excellent dim dim I believe is what it was called was exceptionally spicy however, as the manager explained to us it was Asian mild, which is different from American MIL. Sometimes you want a very specific thing for lunch, and once the craving takes hold, everything else sounds like a bad suggestion. Today, I wanted soup dumplings. So we headed to Zen Dumplings on Baymeadows Road, where soup dumplings are very much the point. We started with a scallion pancake, wafer-thin and crisp, with enough scallion flavor to make its presence known. A little table-side chili crunch turned it into an excellent opening act. Then came the main event, soup dumplings. We ordered a basket of chicken, plus the sampler, which includes one each of chicken, beef, shrimp, crab, pork, and truffle. All of them were good, but the pork was the one I kept thinking about. The broth was deeply savory, and the pork filling had the texture and flavor of a very good meatball hiding inside a dumpling. The crab and shrimp were close behind. The beef and chicken were solid. The truffle dumpling was a different animal altogether. It tasted like someone had taken a whole truffle and put it inside a dumpling. Truffle isn't usually my favorite flavor, but even I had to admit this one worked. We also ordered shrimp stir-fried noodles. The shrimp were cooked nicely and the noodles were perfectly respectable. Unfortunately, I am still haunted by the spectacular stir-fried noodles I had at Izakaya Ko a couple of weeks ago, and Zen's version had the misfortune of being compared to them. But I didn't come here for the noodles. I came for soup dumplings, and Zen Dumplings delivered. Sometimes that's all you need from lunch. One of my fav spots in Jax. The food is fire and so is the playlist. It had me singing between bites. We got the chicken soup dumplings, potstickers, chili dumplings, and some of the noodles. The chili dumplings were our favorite along with the noodles. Everything here has such good flavor! I want to try the soup dumplings that includes all the different meats. Cool little place located in an area surrounded by other restaurants. Modestly appointed with a couple of large screens looping pictures of menu items. Service was fast and friendly. QR code menus provide pics of the food along with prices. You order on a sheet in what I would describe as sushi style. Pretty simple concept. We started with edamame which came out fast. Chicken karaage followed close behind and I felt it was well executed. We asked for some sweet and sour sauce as none was served with the chicken. I found that kind of odd as I've had it served with a ponzu or spicy mayo other times at other establishments. Not sure if that's how they do that here but the beef rolls I've had in the past have always been warm and crispy so that was a shock. Clean and esthetic look of the place. Service was good. We placed a fairly large to go order for 430pm. I got a text saying it was ready at 425 so I came in, but ended up needing to wait about 10 mins. I'll start with what I would get again: the stir fried green beans, zen chili wontons, stir fry noodles, and the truffle pork soup dumplings. We got the signature sampler and I thought the truffle pork soup dumpling was the only one I would get again. The general tso chicken had good flavor but was super tough and stringy that we actually ended up throwing most away. Scallion cakes were flavorless. This was my first time trying Zen Dumpling. The service was good and there is a large selection on the menu. This particular visit my food was okay. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Now the Sake was a whole different story. I tried the peach and my friend tried the apple. Lol who knew those little bottles would creep up on us like they did. I think most people go wrong if all they order is dumplings. I would definitely order one set but you should order the beef roll-up it was my favorite bite. We got chicken and broccoli and a meat soup. A good variety of dishes made this a wonderful meal. They are also open on Christmas day. We went with her recommendations with the chili dumplings, cucumber salad, and fried green beans, yes those were all bangers 3/3!! The chicken soup dumplings (obviously)and pan fried bao buns were all extremely juicy and oozing out with juices. Make sure you make your ginger soy sauce and vinegar dip to round it out for a flavor bomb! I love how the place is very well kept and has a modernized minimalistic setting. The only downside? the staff's english could use a little help. Pink Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) Visually stunning and absolutely delicious. The pink color isn't just for show; they're juicy, flavorful, and perfectly steamed. The broth inside bursts with umami when you bite in. Chive dumplings: Silky texture, generous filling, and that fresh cilantro touch on top makes them feel light and satisfying at the same time. Spicy Dan Dan Noodles: Just the right amount of heat, coated evenly with sauce, and full of fresh herbs and bean sprouts. Definitely one of those dishes you can't stop eating even when you're full. So glad Jacksonville has a place serving legitimately good quality soup dumplings and other dim sum items. Zen Dumpling does a great job with their variety and quality, all while housing it in a very trendy and modern interior. Unlike a lot of other places, these soup dumplings have a good amount of soup when you bite into them. They are super flavorful and the wrapper is just the right thickness. Their gyoza are great as well, with just the right amount of pan fried crispiness while the filling stays tender.
