We ordered an appetizer before our entrées, but we were served entrée with no notice that the appetizer would be late or missing. When our dinners arrived, we asked about it (we were not told, we had to ask) and were told the sauce was still being made for the appetizer. Later, the roti was brought out by itself with no curry, with no context. Victoria, our server, just dropped it off. After trying to find our server for several minutes (because she did not check on us to ask how the meal was), I asked about the sauce and was then told that another employee was supposed to have informed us that they were out of it. She said this in a scolding tone that made me feel bad for even asking. Eventually, the curry did arrive, but by that point we had nearly finished our meals and we had spent so much time annoyed about where our food was, we were not happy to eat it. There were other strange service moments as well. Our table was initially missing silverware, and at one point I began refilling my own small water glass from the bottle left on the table. Victoria abruptly took the bottle out of my hand and told me, "No, I'm supposed to do that for you." That interaction felt unnecessarily brusque, especially after we had already spent much of the meal trying to get basic information about food we had ordered. The price point made all of this harder to excuse. My $17 bowl of tom yum was essentially tofu and vegetables in spicy broth. I understand that restaurant prices include far more than the raw ingredients, but that is exactly the point: when I'm paying that much for a simple entrée, I am also paying for service, atmosphere, and a pleasant dine-in experience. I do not expect to spend the evening confused about where our food is or feel scolded for asking about it. They did ultimately discount the appetizer by half, which I appreciated, but the overall experience was still extremely disappointing. This was our first time coming on a Saturday night, and we specifically chose Blue Orchid because we wanted to spend a little more for a nice atmosphere and a relaxing evening. Instead, the service made the meal so confusing and stressful that by the end my husband and I were basically angrily eating the panang curry. At this point, we won't be returning to dine in. If this were a fast-casual or primarily takeout restaurant or if it were even a slow weekday, I would calibrate my expectations differently. But at these prices, service and hospitality are part of the product, and on this visit they simply were not there. I've had better experiences here in the past, which is part of why this one was so disappointing. On what should have been one of the restaurant's strongest nights, Saturday evening, they did not simply drop the ball -- they forgot about it and scolded us for reminding them.
