Food are amazing the chefs are professional and the ambiance and service are spectacular

My friend and I went in on a Thursday night at 9:30 pm. There were maybe 8 people in the restaurant total. Given this, our food (literally one rice dish and one chicken entree) should not have taken an hour to come out but it did! The restaurant owner (I can only assume it was him?) did notice our disgruntlement and gave us a discount which is nice, but the service was honestly atrocious. It took us almost two hours to get out of there and the server only checked in with us maybe twice. Had to come back three times to verify our order (we ordered three items total) and he kept walking away before we could ask for the bill at the end. It was bad enough that we bonded with the table next to us because they were also being neglected. The food was okay. The crispy sushi rice was nice but the sweet and sour chicken was way too salty and the kimchi fried rice didn't taste like much but ginger. Not really worth the two hour experience. read more

Service was great, everyone was on point with us. Review is based on food and drinks. I have ordered the Orange chicken ( it was just orange chicken) doesn't come with rice or any sides... tastes better in your local Chinese take out place. I had also the "crispy sushi" which was tater toots with avocado, shrimp and tuna on top, very dry. The chicken fried rice and Chicken Satay. The food tasted ok nothing crazy. Their menu needs to change and add some more Japanese food and sushi. They don't have sushi on their menu at all. I liked their drink. Came in at 9:50pm on a Saturday, it had nice ambiance, cool decor and a lot of people enjoying dinner. Even though we had a reservation, we didn't get seated after 30mins waiting by the door, which we were the only ones standing there, no seats to sit & wait and people leaving dinner squeezing past us. We already knew what we wanted to drink and eat once our waitress came by which was another 20 mins waiting after sitting down. Waited another 30 mins to finally get our drinks, and another 15 mins for our appetizers and then another 30 mins for our entrees. Literally almost 12pm midnight to start eating. I was so bored and done with everything, I didn't even want to order another drink, afraid it would take another 30 mins. I ordered crispy sushi for my appetizer which was not too bad tasting and looked cute. I usually get everything all together as an entree because I don't like to get full off of the appetizer and no room for the entree. But I'm glad the sushi was the appetizer because I was starving! I got the egg fried rice as the entree and it was so bland and not good at all.. how could you mess up something so simple?? I didn't even eat half of it and was definitely not going to eat it later. Overall, Zen was not good at all (I really wanted to like this place, I was very excited to go at first). I will never go back. I do not recommend. read more

I'm in Zen as I type this on a Saturday night. The music is great. They're playing a bit of everything, afro beats, r&b, bad bunny, etc. The food is really good. I had the lobster rice with mushrooms and onions. For my mushroom lovers this is a MUST GET. read more

The staff behind the bar here are very nice and personable. The drinks are good too! But the food really is terrible. We ordered a few appetizers including the satay chicken to share. Terrible. Just terrible. Food is okay....but they rush you from the moment you get there. We're eating our meal & they take our utensils. I had a hard time deciding between a three and four star review but I'd definitely put it in the high 3s. The food was delicious except for the lo mein which was very watery. The service was good but it took forever but they were super nice about it. They did completely forget about my friend's beer until he reminded them about it. This is the first restaurant I've been too in my entire restaurant experience with not the best service. If you're not a local, they definitely will not attend to you in a timely or professional manner. Drinks and food were okay, but not mind blowing where you'd feel the need to revisit after one time. Our waitress attended to multiple tables at the same time and checked in with us ONCE. Totally okay, I understand the rush the hour, but what you're not going to do is forget we're there. I asked 4 other waiters for a to go box and my bill. The total time of waiting for boxes and my bill was an hour. Truthfully, I was going to leave the bill and not pay because of the costumer service. Decided to get up and pay at the front. The time she noticed we had to be attended too was when we left the table. She's all frantic looking around. It took 2 and a half hours for the waitress to attend to us again after taking our order. She then rushes me to pay to get out in the rudest way when I should've been the one that was rude. This restaurant was on a list to try, but I would not recommend this place to anyone other than for the setting/ambiance of the restaurant. read more

Came here on Saturday so it was definitely a busy time. My waitress started of great but once our food came we could barely find her to order a 2nd round of drinks and dessert. Appetizers: Crispy sushi 4/10 Dim sum 7/10 Shu mai 5/10 Entree: Short ribs 7/10 Sweet & sour chicken (my friend ordered this and barely ate it. It also looked dry) We ordered desser and when asked if we were celebrating something I said my friend's birthday. When the cake arrived there was a sparkler but nobody sang happy birthday meanwhile other tables got the song and dance. Dessert was also dropped off with the check which I found tacky. She took quite some time to retrieve the check and then apologized about not singing. The tip was included on the bill already (for a party of 2) and I definitely don't think the service was worth the 20% tip. I wouldn't go here again. My boyfriend and I ate dinner here last night and had the best time. Service was great from walking in the door the leaving. Eddie in particular was great!We ordered the sushi appetizer, the chickens and chive dumplings as well as the truffle dumplings and the tuna tartar. Everything was delicious. Our two favorites were the truffle one and the sushi but would definitely recommend all of them. We had the lobster fried rice and the salt and pepper prawns for entrees which were also delicious. Horrible experience at this venue. We called to let them know we would be late for our 10:00 pm reservation. They told us the kitchen was open until 11:00. We arrived around 10:30 and quickly ordered. At that late hour there were only two other couples in the restaurant. The music made it difficult to communicate with our table of 8. I wear hearing aids and asked the server if they could lower the music. When nothing changed I approached what I believe was the manager. Short bald headed man. I explained about my wearing hearing aids and politely asked if the volume could be lowered because of my hearing issue or if it could be turned off completely. His response was "no I can't do that ". As for the food some was decent but a couple of us ordered the vegetable lomein. It was a gelatinous lump of glued noodles. A chicken fried rice dish looked like white rice that hadn't been fried. All and all a very unpleasant experience. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out! Finally I did. I thought they're closed on Sundays, good thing I called and found out that they open at 5pm. My suggestion is to call to check their hours since it's a new establishment and their website's not quite updated yet. Anyway, we weren't disappointed at all!!! The first thing you're gonna notice of course is the ambiance. The interior looks very elegant so it kinda looks intimidating and you would assume that the prices will be unreasonable. But it definitely is very reasonable. It ranges from $20-$30 for the main entree which is pretty standard in Astoria and the serving is also quite generous, a place can be shareable for 2. My friend and I ordered the Salt and pepper tiger prawns and the Beijing chicken plus a portion of kimchee fried rice. The fried rice only costs $9 and our wonderful server offered to split it into 2 plates which is very nice. The food was really flavorful and balanced! It's not like typical Asian food that's overly salty or overly saucy. It was just perfect! Lastly we ordered the Ube cheesecake which is OMG!! freaking fire!! On top of this, I am very impressed by the service! The moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm welcome from Nadia, she sat us on a table immediately, Our server Neftali was very polite, not pushy at all (would always check on us but not in a timely manner) Other servers/ bussers would also touch our tables from time to time but it's not in a way that it's very confusing who's really taking care of us. Pretty much everyone is very accomodating and friendly. I love trying out places especially here in Astoria. I texted all my friends already to try this new gem in Astoria, I'm writing this review not only to help out a new business like Zen but because me and my friend really had a wonderful experience. Delicious!! I had been to Zen before with friends and we enjoyed but tonight I went to Zen for my anniversary and it was even better than the first time. The cocktails were on point ( we had the Lucky Root & Dancing Bee). If you're into Bone Marrow the Bone Marrow is superb highly recommend. For entrees we tried Short Ribs & the Airline Chicken Breast that are new add ons to the menu and they were both so good we couldn't decide on which one was better than the other. The server Steven was very welcoming and could answer any questions we had. The general manager Joel was very attentive and came over to check on us a few times on how we were enjoying our experience. The ambience at Zen is very nice & trendy. It is great for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends. We highly recommend and will be going back for sure. read more

I had the chance to come to the soft opening and wow! This is what Astoria was missing. At first I thought - another Asian restaurant? But nope this place is definitely top notch. First, the ambiance is so beautiful and they were playing this great music that added to the environment. I had the Zentini as a cocktail to start - it's their take on a lychee martini and it was strong! I had the bone marrow as an app - it was cooked well and the bread it came with had the texture of a pork bun with no filling - never seen that before which was fun. It had two sauces that you could put on the marrow so that was tasty. Ended up trying the duck as my main. It was cooked so good! At first I saw a lot of pink but when I tasted it I realized it was meant to be that color because of was SO good. My fav dish of the night was the crispy sushi, I can't explain it - but it's like crunchy sushi - sooooo good. Wanted to start writing Yelp reviews and this was the perfect first restaurant. They're a new neighborhood gem. The food was amazing and ambiance was very classy and lively. The DJ was playing good music. Me and my family went for my mom's birthday and everyone enjoyed everything. We ordered the tuna tartare, calamari (that curry aioli dipping sauce was *chefs kiss*), cucumber salad, chicken & chive dumplings, salt and pepper tiger prawns, Beijing chicken, the short rib clay pot rice, beef and broccoli and the pork belly. Everything was absolutely delicious. Even the side portion of jasmine rice was huge. Would definitely recommend this spot for a date night/girls night. Last but not least, the hospitality was top tier!!! Everyone and I mean EVERYONE on the staff/clock at Zen were so accommodating, extremely friendly, and beyond nice.
