This place gives very much Panda of Harlem, Sei Less, or Brooklyn Chop House vibes in terms of the menu, food offerings, and even the pricing which honestly surprised me based on the location. The prices are definitely on the high end and you feel that right away when you look at the menu. The first time I went was on a Monday evening. The service that night was good and pleasant from the host to the waitress to the bar. Everyone was professional and attentive which made the experience better. Food wise it was mixed for me. I had a salad and it was bland so I would not order that again. We also had the chicken and shrimp satay which were just ok. The shrimp has a very heavy tempura breading so you definitely have to like that style because it is not light at all. The lobster fried rice was extremely salty which was disappointing especially at that price point. I went back a second time on a Saturday later in the evening just for drinks and had a completely different experience. The host staff was rude and the way my group was spoken to was not ok. Even though I stayed for a drink I will not return after that interaction. Overall the concept is trendy and upscale and the menu is similar to other high end Asian fusion spots in the city, but between the inconsistent service and the food not matching the prices it is not somewhere I would go back to. read more

My friend hosted her birthday dinner here so as group of 9 we sat at a table right on the side of the bar, The way they put the table together was nice. The place itself is nice seems spacious. The bar is not big a few seats around and they have a large back room. Prior to sitting down I needed to use the restroom there was a man standing in front telling us to wait for the first I asked about the second one in the back and he responded "I said wait" I told him he was rude and you do not speak to people like that I did mean to speak to management about this however it slipped with all the other things that were happening. For drinks I ordered the lemon drop it was good until I ordered another one and it was really really short when it was supposed to be a double. When I asked for it to be made over they refused saying it would be the same way when I know this is untrue so I left it & asked for it to be taken off the bill. For food I got the shrimp skewers they were jumbo shrimp and good I liked it! I got the salt and pepper prawns for my main and lobster fried rice. I did think the food was good 8/10. All I can say is WOW...this place will take your breath away!! So my friends and I was out. Looking for something to eat. And we came in to Zen. First impressions was Wow the food was a good 10/10. The portion was very good for 3 people. The steak and broccoli was so good the orange chicken juicy and tender. The service was excellent they treated us so well. The ambience will have you feeling like you're dining in Manhattan. The music was great and playing all the good R&B music . Went here one day while I was passing by Astoria and I have to say, this place was definitely upscale. I felt completely out of place in my tshirt and jeans, however the food did not disappoint. We got char siu bone marrow and it was definitely the highlight of the meal. The bone marrow was perfectly buttery soft and added to the depth of the already delicious char siu buns. We also got their zen lobster fried rice. Although it was definitely delicious as well, it wasn't my favorite. Another dish we tried was the wagyu crispy nigiri. Don't forget to get cameras out for this dish as they torch the wagyu at table side. We also tried the roasted pork belly. The pork belly was super tender however it was a little tough to eat as the crust of the pork belly was a little on the tough end. My first time visiting zen Astoria, the ambiance is beautiful. Great for a date night or birthday. I attended a birthday dinner. It was a prefix menu Family style. You do get a lot of food and leave with leftovers . You can take a lot of pictures there the filet mignon and broccoli taste delicious and I love the lo mein. The dumplings was good as well and the sesame chicken chicken sat teas are usually my favorite at any restaurant that I go to that sells it, but this is actually my least favorite out of all the other restaurants that I have been to. I had a lychee martini which was OK and a strawberry lemon drop I didn't really like the drinks are different. We initially planned to go to a different restaurant but as we were waking by zen the music made us rethink our dinner choices for the night haha. Spontaneous adventures are always the start to a great night. Don't mind the cowgirl outfit, it's Halloween weekend. So the story goes like this, a cowgirl and Kim possible walked into Zen.. The host was super sweet. The place was pretty busy as expected for a Saturday night but we were able to be seated at the bar right away. The bartender was very attentive and the service was great ! The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is a 10/10. A sexy little date night spot..and in our case perfect for a girls night out. The crispy sushi was my fav. These quick bites leaves you hungry for more. The calamari to my surprise was amazing! Calamari is always a starter for my friends and I - it's been a while since I've had some that I enjoyed, so I wasn't expecting much here. I had to check this spot out as I saw posted on ig and reading reviews on yelp that came out for it. This is right across the street from Blend Astoria. They have different cuisines, but have the same ambiance. Making reservations is recommended! Once you walk inside you're greeted by loud music and nice ambiance. I ended up walking to the back for the restroom and there's a hookah area right off to the side. I spoke to the manager and he told me they do parties and for 8+ people it will be pre fixed. There were a lot of different asian fusion foods to try out. For appetizers, I had chicken satay which comes in three pieces with this amazing sauce. The wagyu crispy rice was great too. They ask how you want it made and that's how they prepare it for you. The roasted pork belly was good, especially if you pair it with a side of rice or the chicken fried rice too. The ube cheesecake was a great recommendation by the manager and the waitress. Wish it was a bit bigger. So the first time I was here they did an amazing job on every aspect. So much so that after being filled with sushi, I still came back to get a little nostalgia from my first experience... came to the bar ordered the Chai Bubble Tea Affogato.. however while waiting for my dessert, over the very loud, but pleasant music I hear a woman on speakerphone... I tried to get my dessert Togo and blamed it on the temperature of the restaurant coupled with this inappropriate behavior at the bar. She yells out babe to an employee who works behind the bar. They move her to a booth after a quick conversation and I feel her eyes on me. I think maybe it will be better, but now I can hear the difference in where she is located with her speakerphone is on, while she is intoxicated. Her man must be Julien because that's the name I hear her say. Now she's slamming her fist on the table behind me. This place is delicious and the atmosphere is amazing. However this makes me have zero desire to come and spend hard earned money when the atmosphere involves a loud, drunk girlfriend of an employee. I'm not sure when having a person you know at a restaurant meant you acted more inappropriate. Needless to say it's only gotten worse and I had my dessert planned on ordering some food to take to go, but I couldn't stand being in there for one more second . It's really sad that not a single employee said a word to her like hey, maybe this is an inappropriate way to act. If any guest ever acted like that and I've been in Food & Beverage for 27 years as a Food & Beverage Director, I would absolutely say something to a complete stranger, but if it was a friend or family or significant other, that would be an entirely different issue for me . Service was really good and the manager even came over to ask how everything was. After telling him the rice was mediocre he went and spoke to the cooks immediately. I've been dying to try this place and my friends and I finally had the opportunity to. The calamari was interesting, it's not like your classic fried calamari. It was purple fried and the sauce on the side had a mild tar tar taste to it. We got the fried vermicelli noodles with salmon fish eggs, and it was to die for! It was absolutely delicious. When also had ordered the short ribs, which was glazed with this nitsuke sauce!! It was delicious, we were amazed about how plain it looked but tasted so extraordinary. I feel like Astoria has been waiting a long time for Zen to open and it did not disappoint. I decided to make this my bday dinner choice and we made a Saturday reservation. The hostess (Norelis) greeted us with great enthusiasm and very attentive. The place wasn't packed so I asked for a round table by the windows (it usually sits 4) and the hostess checked and said that should be fine, I mean it is my bday lol. The place looks beautiful, it looks like it was worth all that wait, low lights and asian designs are all over the restaurant. The huge Buddha in the middle of the room is a nice touch plus the live dj really made it top notch. It still feels like Flo in there a lil bit but it's still it's own new vibe. We ordered 2 mojitos and some appetizers to start, the calamari & chicken dumplings which were both really good. For our entrees we ordered 3 plates - the lo mein,the Beijing chicken & the lobster rice. The drinks were strong so I ordered another one. The entrees were all delicious and very filling. Overall it was a great experience, the staff is super attentive and at your service. Our bill came out to $150 so it's definitely on the higher end price in comparison to other places in the area. I would say its the classiest place in Astoria hands down. It's a place you take someone special or on their special day. A good place to try to impress ! I really hope they make it. It declines .( this has happen b4 at high end places in manhattan & because of his profession, we were never treated wrong , it's always grace given and never any weird vibes. & the problem is always solved) Let's keep in mind guys that . I'm well courted. I don't ever have to come out of pocket , not that I wouldn't , my man just treats me like the queen I am. After eating here I had to make it my mission to leave a review which I never do. I'd describe my experience as a complete amateur experimenting with food and drinks in the kitchen. Sweet, salty, bitter everything was done in excess. The moment my drink arrived at the table I told my partner I think we should cancel our order before its too late. I sadly did not. By overcharging for an awful experience naave new customers have to be keeping this place afloat. I genuinely felt like I got scammed/robbed. Let me start off by saying, the food here is ABSOLUTELY divine. I came here with a group of girls for dinner, and dish after dish, I was not disappointed. We split a handful of appetizers. We ordered the crispy sushi, chicken wings, bone marrow and steamed buns along with the tuna tartar. The bone marrow was by far our favorite dish! The bone marrow was so soft and flavorful, we all wanted more! I truly cannot say one bad thing. For my entree I ordered the short rib. I am a sucker for short rib, and let me tell you, I cleared my plate that night! I genuinely am rating this place though, 3.5/5 stars. The ambiance is cool, for the younger crowd. I say that because the music was BLASTING all night long. I could barely hear what the person next to me was saying. When I tell you, my girls and I were relieved when we stepped out of that restaurant, because we could actually hear our own thoughts, I'm not kidding. This place does have that Miami influencer upscale vibe which was a little intimidating; however, my fiance and I had a superb experience here. I would choose this place in a heartbeat over other restaurants in the area. My server was amazing and super attentive - I should have asked for her name but she was one of the only asians front-of-house yesterday. There weren't many customers when we arrived around 5pm so we got a really comprehensive treatment. My fiance got the salted egg yolk prawns which have this divine sauce - I wanted to take the bowl and drink it. They do go hard on the sauce here and have a few different asian-fusion style dishes, but I have to admit that the quality is definitely up to par as they try to intersect Astoria/US culture with Chinese/Filipino/Asian food. Some of their drinks have Calamansi which is pretty cool considering it's not often seen outside of Filipino-specific restaurants/grocery stores. I ordered Char Siu and while the meat was pretty darn melty, the small side salad on the dish it came with was a real winner. Genuinely, I just wanted to try a new restaurant and wasn't totally sure of this place since some reviews said overpriced and since it's not super traditional food, things can sometimes go awry - but this place did a great job of creating delicious food in an upscale way. The fried rice takes sauce and flavor to intense levels, which was actually really delicious - we compared it almost to spam and fried rice as the sausage pieces were sweet. For dessert we had the baked Alaska which was good, but might have been a touch too much as we had plans to get smoothies after. It was really cute and would be good for three people to share a few bites of, plus they add the fire in front of you. Overall they're good enough that I was contemplating hard about just delivering more today since I craved their food after consuming the extra fried rice from yesterday's dinner. My husband and I and a friend visited this restaurant that had a long 6-month period before their grand opening but WOW, the wait was totally worth it! Every little detail of their restaurant was well-planned out to impress: The interior design, ambiance (which includes a live talented DJ who works from an in-built DJ stand), and food which were ALL equally amazing! This rarely happens except in a more pricey restaurant. And like a previous reviewer said, this place is perfect for many different occasions (date night, night out with friends, even for a business meeting). Even their plateware was high-grade (heavy-weight and comes in gorgeous colors with marble streaks of gold across them)! All of the employees are SUPER friendly and loved the greeter who has a genuine smile was so nice to us all. For appetizers, we chose the homegrown mushrooms, the ceviche, cucumber salad, and broccoli with black garlic sauce. We loved the unique variety of fungi and loved the crunch and taste of the tofu croutons, the ceviche was fresh and the sauce on top had a nice burst of flavor as well as the cucumber salad and broccoli dish. (By the way, the broccoli they use is of the Asian variety so the stems are more slender and has leaves and not the tiny nubs on top.) For main dishes, we had the lobster fried rice (highly recommended!) the chicken clay pot, and ramen with peanut sauce. The clay pot dish has radishes in it that has an interesting flavor and the ramen is like an interesting twist on pad thai since there is no broth. We were so excited that the noodles are freshly made! Last but definitely not least were our desserts - We ordered the matcha cake and ice cream and the Baked Alaska thing. We were surprised by their special presentation: The waiter sprinkled gold dust on our matcha cake before we could eat it and as for the Baked Alaska, he torched it all around so it had this amazing look to it afterwards. The moment we cut into the matcha cake, it was OOZING of pure, intense matcha tea inside and one bite was sheer heaven! (Yes, it was the best matcha dessert we've ever had to date, no exaggeration!) The baked Alaska has peach mixed into the white merengue part - wish the flavor of peach could be a tad stronger (perhaps add a bit of peach extract to it?) as well as the chocolate flavor of the cake (which was Asian-style, was very light, dry and wasn't very sweet) but the mango sorbet ice cream was home-made and very fresh. Our strong recommendation is to order a bunch of stuff and share everything family-style since there are so many things you'll want to try. (The waitstaff is very accommodating so definitely do it!) This was definitely one of the best feel-good restaurant experiences we had in a long time. Will be back when we visit the neighborhood again! P.S. We had a fun conversation with the manager about the soy sauce that comes with your dishes. The big surprise discovery about it were 2 things: It has this unique orange zesty flavor to it (I just dipped my finger into it since I didn't use it with anything I ate and wow, why didn't I??) and it's gluten-free (!)
