This is a great place to grab a cocktail before a movie or a show. Cocktails are very delicious in my experience, and they have that specialty crafted feel, you know, the kind where the bartender probably used a match to make your drink. The pricetag on said cocktails are pretty reasonable as well. What really is a selling point for me personally is their pretzel app. I have a special place in my heart for excellent bar pretzels, and these might just be first place in my book. Three huge pieces of pretzel bread came in a cone-shaped basket at a steal. Served with jalapeno cream, mustard, and parmesan sauces, you will be in bread heaven. Need more of a place to lounge? Take your drink to the lobby/lounge to people watch through the streets of Duluth. Love this place. read more

On my recent trip to Duluth, I stopped here for lunch before hitting the road back to the Cities. Zeitgeist is a classy little place, and if you were blindfolded when you walk in, you might have mistaken your locale for someplace other than Duluth. From your surroundings, you wouldn't even realize it's across the street from a sad little casino! The decor has an exposed- brick loft feel- with seating up and downstairs. Between myself and my two companions, I tried the hamburger w/fries, the caprese sandwich, and the tofu curry bowl. I loved all three. I can't say they tasted like the best versions of those dishes that I've ever had, but they were certainly tasty and beautifully plated. A couple next to us ordered the banana cream pie for dessert. It looked good and HUGE! I recall it was a bit pricey for a dessert, but after seeing those people eat it, I'd say it was probably worth it. I will definitely come back to Zeitgeist on my next Duluth trip- but hopefully to try the dinner menu! read more

This was awesome. Loved every minute. Came out to celebrate fiance's promotion, and I'm so glad we did. We started with the cheese plate. I had a glass of Owen Roe Sinister Red, as recommended with awesome detail by our waiter, Daniel, who listened to my preferences and described this wine with gusto. Perfect choice. (And they have a great wine list, by the way.) And the cheese platter, though small, was delicious and came with fig jam. The perfect start to our meal. On to dinner. We split the whitefish sandwich and the portobello sandwich, both with fries. Both incredible. The only minor change we would make is the goat cheese in the portobello sandwich. Didn't go with the other, Asian-themed condiments. It wasn't bad- just a little distracting from the overall flow of the dish. No biggie though. Fries were great, tasty and not greasy. What else? Great atmosphere, cool music, local artists' work on the walls. And our waiter Daniel was quite a character. Very lively, telling us stories and keeping us laughing, while remaining unobtrusive. Definitely added to the experience. We got a kick out of him. If I lived, well, in this time zone, I'd definitely return. Fantastic experience! read more

Went last night to this brilliant spot - dining alone because I'm traveling for work. I say brilliant for many reasons- here's a few...welcoming and pleasant staff immediately found me seating, got me a menu and a beverage, and came to my table at the right moment the entire visit; also, brilliant because the restaurant is windows top to bottom and natural light flooded in as I enjoyed my meal; also brilliant because I've never tasted such amazing coconut curry with my mussels! Whether you are traveling alone or with others, this restaurant is a relaxing, contemporary, welcoming venue. I highly recommend it - my main entree was off the app menu, mussels- and it was plenty (very generous portion). I added a side salad with a balsamic vinaigrette and the salad was huge with many mixed greens, cabbage, red onions, and croutons - refreshing and a good balance with mussels since the sauce is so rich and creamy! read more

Drop by the Zeitgeist and for a few minutes you'll forget you're in Duluth - the best compliment I can give. Lovely, upscale decor, simple elegance. I was reminded of the west coast. The menu is eclectic enough to be interesting, but not so far off the beaten path that you & your fellow diners won't be able to find something you like. The jalapeno crab cakes are a typically great starter - a solid favorite with a delicious twist. Service matches the vibe, professional, friendly and tight. I've been here a few times for dinner and we also had our rehearsal dinner here as well. You can reserve the mezzanine for a small fee which works well for groups larger than 25 people. The food is excellent and the wine list has something for everyone. The only downside was that they switched event coordinators as we were finalizing our menu. This lead to confusion on both sides but was eventually straightened out. Note: It's downtown location makes it an excellent brunch/lunch/dinner stop. read more

I wouldn't recommend this place for dinner but I might still check it out for brunch. We order the stuffed dates based on previous recommendations, and though the presentation was lovely, they were just "ok" and not worth the $12 for 5, we should have gone with the pretzels or mussels. My brother ordered the Superior Burger which was good but the cheese had no flavor. I order the Shire Rice Bowl with shrimp and was very disappointed, it was too sweet and the rice was swimming in the sauce. I was bummed as it appeared like things should have been delish, but instead it was average or even below average. My Gin Gin drink was very tasty though. read more

Ate there about 5 years ago while visiting duluth--not sure what day it was (prob sat.) and it was half price night on New York strip..It was fantastic. Juicy, and great seasoning. We were at the bar and ate right there. Forward to about a year or two ago...went back looking for similar deal/meal--Nope. Whole bunch of oddball stuff on the menu. Got a differnet cut, I think it was fillet--was complete crap. Not sure what happened inbetween, but it was dry and flavorless. Prob going to give it one more shot during Airshow 2014--hoping for the best. Will update or re-review after that. read more

ATMOSPHERE: Upscale casual. The walls are exposed brick, the stairs and railings are metal, the table and chairs were pressed bamboo. It was all very minimalist, but in a nice cozy way. SERVICE: Our waiter was just OK. He seemed a bit "too cool for school' with his tattoos and ear lobe plugs. He clearly did not want to chat with us, even if it was to recommend something off the menu. FOOD: I had the Lake Superior white fish sandwich with arugula, aoili and capers. It was lovely. The bread was soft, the fish was flavorful, and the aoili and caper sauce was a great spread that tied it all together. The only negative is the arugula had no flavor at all and clearly came from a bag shipped from who knows where. Why do restaurants in the middle of the frozen tundra insist on serving things like arugula in winter? My husband had the 14 oz. ribeye which he said was tender and perfectly cooked to medium. French fries were skin on, skinny fries that were dee-lish and not greasy. WINE: They had a very nice wine list. It was short, but there were good selections available. $7-$11 glass. COST: A first glance the cost seemed good, but tax is unusually high in downtown Duluth, so my fish sandwich at $12, and two glasses of wine at $7 each, came to $35 with tax and tip. I was very impressed with the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the friendly host. The cafe has a very modern and clean look to it as you enter the bar area, which is highlighted with a great painting by local artist Adam Swanson. We were seated immediately. Our host walked us to a table adjacent to the floor-to-ceiling windows, giving us front row seats to the large snowflakes dancing around and quickly burying the street outside from the freshly brewing snowstorm. The first thing I read on the menu looked very appetizing and I thought I had made up my mind immediately. However, as I read through the menu, I quickly realized that I was going to have to make several return trips to the Zeitgeist in order to try all of the great looking dishes on the menu. I had trouble deciding which meal(s) I wanted to consume during my first visit. We started out with an order of Spring Rolls and Thai Peanut Sauce. Not generally being a huge fan of the spring rolls I have ordered at most restaurants, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that these were very good. I can safely say that they were the best tasting spring rolls I have eaten. Our server was friendly and helpful with any questions we had about the items on the menu. I finally decided that I would try the Thai Chili Bowl ("Thai Chilis, pea pods, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, and tofu sautéed with sesame oil and served in a seasoned mushroom broth over fresh rice noodles and topped with roasted peanuts") and the Coconut Curry Rice Bowl (Sautéed red bell peppers, broccoli florets, shallots, Crimini mushrooms, and housemade coconut curry broth on brown basmati rice"). We were informed that the Thai Chili Bowl was a bit spicy and figured that would be a good option on a chilly night. Unfortunately, the Thai Chili Bowl was quite bland and flavorless. This was surprising based on the variety of ingredients it contained. Hopefully this would not be the case with the other entree. Upon my first bite of the Coconut Curry Rice Bowl, I knew there was going to be a problem... the portion was not nearly big enough. The flavor was excellent and I knew I would want more as soon as I finished! The meal was served hot and the vegetables were fresh. I would definitely recommend the Coconut Curry Rice Bowl. It will be hard for me to order something different the next time I visit, as I will be very aware of the awesome flavor I will be passing up to try something new. We decided to go big and sample a couple of their desserts as well. We picked the Deconstructed Banana Cream Pie and the Flourless Chocolate Cake. I assumed that the dessert portions would be tiny, considering the fairly small dinner portions. As I watched the server walking across the room with a large dish on each arm, I hoped that the two distinct items on one of the plates was our server's decision to consolidate both of our desserts onto one plate, and that the other gigantic pile of whipped dessert in the other dish was destined for another table. Nope! They were both headed straight for our table! The plate with two items was the flourless chocolate cake along with a pile of whipped cream (which I previously hoped was the deconstructed banana cream pie). The gigantic, fluffy, whipped pile of deliciousness in the big bowl on her other arm was the banana cream pie. So, unfortunately the dessert proportions were way too big and the meal portions were a bit too small for my liking. I would give the flavor of the banana cream pie a giant thumbs up! The bananas were very fresh tasting and the cream and banana "filling" were also quite good. The cream pie came with graham cracker, cookie like, pieces in the bottom. These bites were quite sweet and there were way too many of them for me. We had more than satisfied our sweet teeth with the deconstructed banana cream pie, so we decided it would be counterproductive to indulge in the rich looking flourless chocolate cake. So, we boxed it up to save it for a future post-meal indulgence. My 2nd visit for dinner wasn't quite as impressive. There were a few sandwiches on the menu that looked good. I decided to ask what kind of bread they used for their sandwiches. Unfortunately, they only had white bread. I was quite surprised by this, as I figured a restaurant that offered high quality ingredients for many of their dishes would have an alternative to white bread sandwiches. I ended up ordering the Yellowfin Tuna Wrap. I was hoping the wasabi caper cream cheese would give the wrap a bit of a kick, but it did not. There was way too much cream cheese for my taste. However, the flavor of the Tuna itself was awesome. BRUNCH: Pretty disappointing that they only serve brunch on the weekends. Another thing that was disappointing about brunch is they only had a total of 6 tables open. So, it ends up being quite a wait to be seated. This is a really chill place. I went here on my last night visiting Duluth and I was so happy it was only a couple paces away from the Sheraton Hotel. The prices per dish are not bad, portions are moderate, and selection in dishes range from vegetarian to meaty choices. Since I was only dining as one person, I chose to eat the Coconut Curry Tofu for $12 (option of chicken is $2 dollars more). I was quite please with the dish, however the tofu was not cooked to my ideal standard. The restaurant grilled the tofu leaving behind grill marks, which aesthetically appeared nice but left the tofu tasting like burnt food with occasional bites. I prefer to have my tofu fried. None the less, the ambiance is very nice. Decor is sleek looking and modern. I would definitely be coming back here whenever I am in Duluth to try new things. read more

A fun, modern café in Duluth that is a definite must-try! The Belgian waffle with strawberries and handmade whipped cream is mouth watering and delicious. The only problem that I had when we were there is the only seating available was upstairs. My boyfriends mother has a really bad knee, but luckily they had an elevator that was very accessible and the staff were helpful and kind. It was open, modern, and clean. Mussels to start. Maybe an entree of the Mussels, and then just drink the "sauce" for dessert, I don't know what they do to it, but more Mussels please. My filet was served, and as the manager set it before me, I asked for a steak knife. He just said "No. Enjoy" as he turned knowing that I would be impressed sliding through it with the table knife. Styled like you were in New York sitting at Sinatra's favorite PJ Clarke's. The exposed original brick behind the bar is updated with one of the finest stainless foot rails I have set my Minnesota made Red Wings on. Complimented with a perfect height bar rail for leaning into the evening. Windowed tables on the main give you a Superior seat of the city. Seeing what's going on during the business day, and who's about town in the evening. The Lounge is just salivating to be used and extends the curiosity from window dining out above a great theater under the view of many Hollywood personals. Chili on Saturdays, in the rain, dry behind the massive glass. Tell me if there are beans or not...or if the flavor even makes you care....exceptional, yeah a bowl of chili. I don't know many of the staff, but recognize them from serving me at other establishments over the years. Redwings or Wing Tips....flex the mussels, slurp the chili and savor the filet. read more

I'm always looking for organic healthy choices and Zeitgeist Arts Cafe hit the nail on the head. They have a wide variety of apps, salads, sandwiches, and entrées made with locally grown produce. Their selection is delicious, low fat/calorie, and unbelievably fresh. We shared the Visoui salad, followed by the shire rice bowl, and banana cream pie. Go for the pie alone! It's excellent! I wanted to try this place for breakfast/brunch because of the Espresso Pancakes on the website that is on their menu. I came in today and lo and behold they "just changed" their menu and this seemed to be the only dish changed. I was a little disappointed, but I did also want to try the PB&J french toast, so I went ahead and tried that. In addition, I ordered a side of poached eggs. When the order arrived I was a little disappointed in the portion size, but prices were decent, and it is more of an "artsy" cafe. The french toast was actually just two thin slices of french bread with some jam and peanut butter drizzled on, and a little dollop of whipped cream. I would hardly call it french toast, but it did taste decent. Eggs were cooked very well, so that was an upside. My food was a little under lukewarm when it arrived, but I didn't mind too much. They have a decent selection of breakfast and brunch items. Coffee and Bloody Mary drinks are available, and as I mentioned the prices are decent for the quality. For a quick bite it was okay, but I did not leave wanting more. I can't comment on lunch or dinner, but for breakfast there are many other places in Duluth to try out. We decided to make this our dinner choice after driving up from the Cities, based upon the reviews. Not realizing it is accessed via the theater door we walked right past it. A brief 15 minute wait allowed us to sample the bar - where the overall service is friendly but not overwhelming. The Aviation was very different than others (pulpy) and the Old Fashioned had a bit of a twist. Dinner was served by a friendly but not altogether service-oriented waitress. We ordered a cone of fries that we anticipated to be crispy, but were a bit on the soft-side with a really good aioli, portion size was enough for 3. An awesome charred romaine salad was next, slight fault with the grape tomatoes that were too firm compared to the salad. A bit disappointed by our over cooked seafood - lake trout was dry as was Scott's shrimp (in curry bowl). The mandarin orange beurre blanc sauce (notified replacement) lacked any richness and was on the tart side. Overall, good impression but execution was not firing on all cylinders. read more
