Where the heck have I been? I love this place. Yes it's true to the marketing- it is like a giant living room! So if you're alone or with a friend it is still comfy and inviting. I like the patio out back. I know what you're thinking, what patio? Uh huh, walk around the cash register and through the door and you'll see an eclectic assortment of furniture on a deck. Now there may be no rooftop view, but if you want to sit outside and enjoy a cup of coffee in piece in quiet (no cat calling, shenanigans or peddlers) it's a little oasis back there. The food is also delish. When I need a chocolate fix, I come here for a slice of their chocolate cake. It's rich and cures the urge for chocolate for a weeks. I recently tried their omelet. This is exactly what Silver Spring was missing. I stopped in on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I was instantly relaxed, even before I had my hot cup of tea in my hands. It's all about atmosphere, and Zed's has it. Comfy couches, low tables art adorning the walls, and lots and lots of books. It wasn't crammed with folks peering over their laptops when I was there, but with considerate patrons actually having quite conversations. While I didn't have a bite to eat, they do offer a nice, but limited selection of quick noshes. I hope this place is around for a long time, because it has all the makings of an absolute neighborhood classic. I'm smitten. I knew that Zed's had free wi-fi (http://www.yelp.com/weekly?editorial_id=XcINTRM3qYS8vV8V3NB9xA), so I stopped in to grab a latte and do a little laptopping this morning. And I discovered that Zed's Cafe is so. much. more. than just a free Internet connection. It's full of random mismatched couches, comfy chairs and small tables, with art, local and otherwise, I believe, decorating the walls along with a cool selection of books. There's also a couple desktop computers and even a printer in one corner, apparently for public use. I think Zed was controlling the music from one of them; the playlist during my stay included reggae tunes, Christmas carols, Broadway numbers, and some Etta James to round it all out. If that's not awesome, I don't know what is. The caramel macchiato Zed made me was delicious (sweet and foamy!), and even the for-here cup was a winner: a mug-sized coffee cup on a saucer that definitely did not come from IKEA. I didn't see much in the way of food (I had a Yoplait yogurt, and also saw some croissants and other pastries, fruit, ice cream or gelato, and lots of chocolates and candy bars), but I see a menu of soups, sandwiches and salads on their website, so I wished I'd asked Zed what else he had going on back there. This is a fantastic place to plop down for an extended stay, do some work, studying, or surfing, and feel quite relaxed and at home the whole time. And hey, if you need a last minute gift, there's even gift baskets for sale! Not sure what's in them, but they're there! This place is such a gem that get's overpassed. It's a small entrance to a little hideaway that hosts treats and amazing customer service. I haven't made it into the back patio - where I've heard rumors of a turn table being set up so you can bring your own records and play. The fact that I haven't been there to work is a true miracle, actually really a product of my ADD. But the one time I have gone in, I have received amazing customer service from a man who I believe to be Zed, and an iced coffee that I could of made sweet love to. Product is good, people are good. There motto is "One Big Living Room." Independently owned. There are couches and seats and what not. Yelpers paradise. Gotta hit this place up again real soon! read more

Super reasonable prices and an absolutely excellent atmosphere. Its a place where you can really settle in and get comfortable. I loved all the local art hanging up! The food was okay. I ended up getting the smoked salmon sandwich. I don't think it was anything to write home about but it arrived quickly and got the job done. To the owners: could you please clone your place and put one in Alexandria's West End??? I'm the type of weirdo that if I need a place to study and I'm within 30 minutes of a place that's rated well enough that I'll check it out. I was in DC and this cafe was exactly 27 minutes away...sure I could have went back to Alexandria and went to a coffee shop there but for all the good coffee there might be in Alexandria, there's no place that has good food, good coffee AND good ambiance. This place has all three. So cute with all the knick knacks and art that doesn't-go-together-but-kind-of-does-in-a-quirky-way. Had the omelette with the tomato, bacon, onion and added spinach. Zed's Cafe is simply charming. I arrived one sunny afternoon to meet a friend so we could form a game plan for the Gov Ball in NYC. There was ample seating- at a counter by the window, at tables and a couch. I opted for the larger table. I ordered a latte at the counter and the smiling waitress brought it over to where I was sitting. She felt that she took too long from when I ordered it to when she delivered it so she gave me a piece of almond chocolate to go with my latte. The latte was much bigger than I expected and totally delicious. The wi-fi was not working for me but I latched on to the neighboring restaurant's free wi-fi no problem. In the end, my friend had to cancel but I'm glad I came to Zed's anyway. Upon leaving, I believe Zed came and he thanked me for coming and enjoying a latte. Small cozy atmosphere, felt like I was inside someone's living room. Came here with friends on a Sunday morning. I was kind of hungry so I was hoping to grab coffee and a breakfast sandwich here. However they don't offer many breakfast selections and overall it seemed like their food was pretty pricey. I've decided to go with latte with skim milk. We've decided to stay so they brought our drinks out in different mugs so it really felt like I was having a cup of coffee at someone's house. When we were there it was pretty empty so it was a nice and quiet for us to read and chit chat. Honestly my latte was just okay. There was too much foam, I felt like I was just drinking foam for the first half. It definitely was not my favorite. A solid 3. My wife's coffee was good, but my latte was just okay. Nothing to write home about. I was a bit annoyed because they didn't have simple syrup for the iced latte. I love that you can just sit and listen to jazz when you have nothing to do on a Friday night but mess around on your laptop in a cafe. I love that he serves my coffee in a REAL MUG with a saucer. I love his apple pie and the tiny free little chocolate that came with my mocha. I also love the Mochas! Most of all, I love that the wifi works and the connection/speed was good. Zeds is a must for Silver Spring-ers who need to get some work done and don't want to do it at home, or in a Starbucks. Looking for somewhere to pass the time while I waited for a friend, I stumbled across Zed's while walking to another, farther coffee shop that had shown up before Zed's in my search results even though there was about a mile's difference between them (to this day, I cannot figure out how to force Yelp results to be ranked in order of closeness to my current location). Anyway - I'm glad I picked Zed's because the atmosphere was just what I was looking for. It's not an especially big space, but there are plenty of seating options, including your standard chairs at a small circular table, bar seating by the front window, an armchair, and the roomy, super comfortable couch that I ended up picking. The place is filled with eclectic art and unique touches (my favorite being the small coffee table in front of the couch that is designed to look like a miniature grand piano). Even better, the end tables are stocked with plenty of reading material, including books, relatively up-to-date NYT magazines, and more. As for the coffee (I went with their standard drip coffee), it wasn't one of the best cups I've ever had, but I really appreciated that they had two choices of non-dairy milk - soy and almond - and that the lady at the counter poured me a generous amount into a cute crystal teacup so that I could take it to my seat and pour at my own discretion (it's the little things that count!). She was also exceedingly polite and offered me a free cookie, which is standard practice for their first-time customers. read more

I get the small town feel when I come to Zed's. Zed, himself, is the chef, barista, and busser and is usually the sole employee in this establishment. My orders usually take a while to arrive, but I'm usually studying and don't mind. From what I've observed, if individuals are in a hurry, most people either call their orders in advance; however, most people come to hang out and converse and don't seem to mind that it might be a few minutes for their orders to arrive. Both of the portions for the egg omelette and salmon sandwich are more than enough food for myself. The caramel macchiato is my favorite beverage here, but is a little on the sweet side. The only minor thing I would mention is that it can get humid and uncomfortably hot here during midday and seems to be a lack of air conditioner/ventilation. If you're planning on parking it here day, accordingly. Lastly, Zed is kind enough to allow running tabs for individuals who are parking it and studying all day, don't forget to pay your tabs. THREE LECHES LAYERED CAKE (5 NOMs) More layers more fun with Three Leches Layered Cake Georgia Ave in Silver Spring, DC's suburb. We decided to stop by one of the local independent coffee shops and see what sweets they have to offer. After all cake makes for a great breakfast. They serve up several different desserts, but this beautiful thick slice just caught our eyes. We are big fans of putting large things like that in our mouth. Multiple layers of leche goodness with creamy filling and a thick caramelized layer top. Very sweet and very filling dessert that would be perfect to share with a friend, or if you hungry greedy like us eat all by yourself. Served with a side of whip cream creak because you can never have enough sweetness. Great nomnom from a great local shop that also serves up some good breakfast food and drinks. Went here for a post-dinner date, and it was a pleasant time. The place is the definition of charming: small, neighborhood feel, Zed himself manning the bar, nice couches and seats spread throughout to give you a few different seating options, and whimsical knick-knacks strewn throughout. My date ordered a caramel macchiato, while I went with the vanilla rooibos chai tea. I like coffee shops that offer loose-leaf teas. There's way too much of the non-fresh, pre-packaged stuff at places like Starbucks, so it was nice to see Zed's providing quality tea, and it was tasty. It had very subtle vanilla and chai flavors and warmed me up inside and out. The brightly colored mugs the drinks were served in were quite nice, as well. The macchiato was good as well but tasted no better or worse than what you can get elsewhere. The real draws here are the atmosphere - it felt tranquil, and everyone acted accordingly - and Zed, who was pleasant to deal with and efficient with the order. I'm not in Silver Spring often, but when I'm back, I would love to stop in again. Also, though I didn't have electronics in tow, I did see several power strips scattered throughout to accommodate laptops, if that's what you're looking for. I really liked this place! A friend and I met up there today for lunch and both got the same thing: smoked salmon sandwich and a chai latte. The lattes were nicely sized with the right amount of foam and not too sweet. They were just right! The sandwiches were very good also - came with chips (kinda meh) and a little salad with just the right amount of dressing. It really complimented the smoked salmon (my friend added his salad to his sandwich - good idea). I will definitely be back! They have gluten free bread and some desserts that fit the gluten free bill so I'm excited I've find a local place that suits my needs :) read more

Love, LOVE, love this place! I stumbled onto this place walking one day - and I am happy to have found this gem in downtown Silver Spring. They serve breakfast all day - fresh. And wonderful lunch sandwiches and desserts - big portions! I am a tea connoisseur and I love their teas - try their essential green tea! They have free wi-fi so a lot of people come in to work, but because its a hidden gem it doesn't get too crowded like your local Starbucks. The owner is, shall we say, "a trip." Decour is nice, lots of seating and a few couches around a coffee table. Lots of outlets too. Service- they were very nice, but delivery left something to be desired. I gave up potatoes for Lent and asked that if the chips were potato(as opposed to corn), I could get something else with it. She said they weren't potato, then I pointed to bag where it said "potato" and she goes, "oh I thought you meant like fries. No worries. Then she offered more fruit or salad in its place. I said fruit, she gave me a huge pile of lettuce. Oh well? Food was pretty good; I got the salmon + cream cheese sandwich on focaccia bread. Fruit salad consisted of strawberries and oranges. Overhyped and overrated. Came in on a calm Saturday morning, my group of 4 were the only ones in the place except for one other customer who was already taken care of. We ordered and took our seats. 2 of the 3 drinks were created wrongly, and all 3 sandwiches were made incorrectly and had to be remade. You get the sense they really not paying attention when you are ordering. I only ordered a croissant warmed up... all 3 sandwiches came before (even the remakes). I kept reminding the food runner and they ensured me it was coming. It took 40 min for me to get a warm croissant. By the time we left, we were not the only customers with trouble tickets, one lady we overhead had to fight to get a refund after waiting for a coffee and sandwich for over 30 minutes. I would give 4.5 stars. Been here a few times. It's small and cozy, but at times can feel a little overstuffed with little knick-knacks. Most are cute and helped entertain my toddler but some were a little dangerous (broken lamp with sharp pieces). Also the door is tight and to get a stroller in I had to do some serious finagling. BUT! The owner is great, everyone is super nice and service is mostly stellar. Their waffle maker was having issues one time and they remade the waffles a number of times, I just wish they had told me sooner about the problem instead of having me wait about 30 min before saying something. Generally all their food is very good and drinks as well. Menu is limited but always fresh. Often you can choose your own mug and owner has been very generous in allowing my husband and I to share one gigantic drink for the same price. Hot beverages are always impressive and piping hot. Bathroom and general cleanliness could be improved a little bit, but at least there is always toilet paper, paper towels and soap stocked. One of my favorite places to grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat in Silver Spring. The food is always surprisingly delicious, the guy behind the counter (Zed?) is always a delight, and the atmosphere is perfect for relaxing/reading/conversation. I remember the first time I stopped by this cafe, I was like, "YES, there's a good place to get coffee here in town and they have good food too!" When people come up to visit from DC, we almost always end up here for a cup of coffee. Make sure to try a cappuccino/latte like beverage, grab a dessert, and get whatever the food special is on weekend mornings (it's always good). As a person who consumes more than my fair share of coffee, I am very grateful for Zed's Cafe in Silver Spring. PS. Zed's has a whole style of its own- a vintage and cozy mess of really well thought-out memorabilia and items spread out around this tiny cafe that epitomize its charm. Theres plenty of seating with many delicious options to choose from their menu. (Their Chai Latte is quite amazing!!!!!). Parking is somewhat of a hassle but worth it. (Tip: if you're lucky then you will find metered parking in front of the cafe, but if you want to save some $$$ you can also park near Downtown and walk to it) Definitely a thumbs up if you want a nice place to study, talk, read, or simply hang out at. read more

Your ever diligent Caped Crusader went undercover (in his Clark Kent street clothes) to this charming little cafe in Silver Spring, Maryland (just north of Washington DC). Superman wanted to avoid the usual crowds and mass hysteria every time he struts around in his skin tight spandex flight suit (see profile pic to erase all doubt of Superman's magnetic appeal). Plus, he's had trouble recently fitting into said outfit due to his yelping activities at restaurants around the world (again, see photo). Zed's is great. Free wi-fi (not necessary for the S Man due to his telepathic skills and his ability to look over everyone's shoulder to see their computer screens), cozy atmosphere, tasty food and easy street parking (again, not necessary for yours truly who dropped in from above and changed into his street clothes in a nearby alleyway). There is a slight bohemian feel to this place, which is getting rare these days what with all those odious fast food restaurants that Superman completely avoids, although he has scored the Denny's franchise for Planet Krypton. Hey, Superman is also SuperBusinessMan! This crime fighting gig doesn't pay too well, after all, and Superman must eat (sometimes too much... again, see photo). We love Zed's Cafe. The staff and owner are upbeat and helpful. We love the atmosphere and have foregone Panera Bread as our place to hang out while doing paperwork or tending to business tasks. We would love to have another option for the field greens that are served with breakfast and when ordering salads. The fixed menu works well for this cafe since options are available to have sandwiches served as salad plates. The special ginger tea with a touch of chai tea is my favorite. I could drink it all day, but refills are not offered. I would love to see the price of coffee or tea come with one refill. Zed's is a great find. Free internet and soft background music punctuates its great atmosphere as does the sensuous smell of freshly prepared breads, desserts and beverages. Horrible! Horrible! Horrible!!! Perhaps it's a karmic trick but the experience here was the worst we've ever had with a business and its owner. It's taken me a couple of weeks to digest it all. But I would not recommend this dirty place. I am an herbalist and a tea connoisseur! The second visit, the owner discourages me from trying the berry like tea filled with antioxidant - that my body craved that morning. What smart business person does that? He says, women always complain about an after taste and do not finish their tea. Really? That is because they are getting triple strength and thr trick is to drink it light and perhaps two or three cups which I did using the same tea bag. The next time I met a client there and like the first time he was opposed to my asking for lemon and agave. Hmmm! He claims that is not the way to drink herbal teas. Now who tells their customers how to drink their teas? The food I ordered was not correct, I got something totally different than what I ordered. I drew the line when he began telling my client how to drink her tea. I found it hilarious and told him that he was rather controlling! And added that he should refrain from ordering his customers on how to have their teas. Then i said, and you should smile. I have been there three times and had no clue that he was the owner. Dry face and too serious to make anyone feel warm and welcomed! He did not like my direct communications to him and responded stating that it was his establishment and that he could do what ever he wanted. In fact, he was so rude in telling me that I can go and tell the Washington Post if i wanted and that I should not go back there anymore. When I returned to our table my son was holding the piece of blue object saying it was at the bottom of his cup. I looked closely to see that it was a piece of sponge. The one you wash and clean with. I was even more disturbed! When i approached him again, he responded with an "I don't give a damn attitude". No apology! No concern.... his words were...."So you want your money back?" Reaching for the cash. I don't care what this space looks like or how many different unmatched pieces of furniture it has that makes it look eclectic. I am energy aware and can see and sense what most folks are too numb to understand! And I am a business person and now I'm a Hospitality Critic!!! This is totally uncalled for and very unbusiness like. I shall be taking the necessary steps to insure that the appropriate institutions are aware of the hygiene and customer relations practices of this place. This cat is Ethiopian, a fellow African. 'TODAY!!"... maybe it's because it took 20 minutes to find a parking space... or b/c it was "really" small... My friend and I are tall.. so when we were looking for some place to sit it looked like all the antique furniture would break... or.. maybe it could of been the random guitar player that came in and started his own gig session in the tooooo tiny space that everyone was trying to work in. On another note there was not a diverse selection of good eats so next time I'll be heading someplace without the random jam session and something with some peace and quiet. -I was better off going to Busboys n' Poets... Zed's is a very romantic, relaxing cafe. When I come here, It seriously feels like I'm hanging out in one of Woody Allen's (good/happy) movies and any minute Channing Tatum is going to come in here and drink lemongrass chai tea with me while we talk about the meaning of life. Seriously though, I come here on weeknights to work on my fiction writing, and it's a great spot to get the creative juices flowing. Local art on the wall, soft lighting, quiet jazz, and tasty treats. FREE INTERNET. I've tried writing at Panera Bread, Caribou Coffee, and Starbucks in the area - all of which are usually overly crowded, uncomfortable, don't have good or free internet, and tend to rush you through the line. So there you are at Chain Coffee Store, having paid $10 for a stale croissant and a coffee and you feel kind of grumpy. Which can make it hard to write. Zed's is the opposite - like one of the other reviewers said, it's like a big living room. You settle in. There's a menu with real food, pastries, and pie. Even healthy foods like salad, grapes, greek yogurt and cheese. Zed himself is an awesome host and super nice. You can tell he has a passion for this shop and his customers. Even so, the cafe is in a pretty safe area and I haven't heard of anything cray-cray happening. There's also street parking on the side streets, which are a little better lit. I almost don't want to leave a review because I don't want Zed's to become so crowded that I can't find a space to hangout and work for the day. But, I also want them to do well. So here it is. Zed's is amazing. I love working here. I'm a holistic nutritionist and I can easily order gluten free/paleo options. I almost always order the smoked salmon salad because it's freaking amazing. Honestly it's one of the best salads I've ever had. I like it way more than anything from Sweetgreen. Zed and the rest of the staff are always awesome and super friendly. I don't drink coffee but they have a great selection of tea. Wifi is always fast, unlike Whole Foods. Love the vibe, love the food, love the people. read more

I had my third--and last--food at Zed's this evening. It is my last time ordering food because of the behavior of the proprietor, Zed. When I inquired about the two kinds of quiche that he sells, he pointed to the remains of two quiches in the display case. He said, "You can have the veggie quiche." It struck me as odd that he did not ask me, "Would you like to order the veggie quiche?" I told him that the remaining slices of the two quiches in the case did not appeal to me and I wanted to order something else. I wanted to eat something that was made fresh, not reheated. I then ordered a bacon and tomato omelet, which was supposed to come with a croissant. When I received my order, it only took a few bites to discover that instead of a freshly-made bacon and tomato omelet, I was given a slice of reheated veggie quiche, which someone had tried, but failed, to remove all the crust from (there was still crust on the bottom of it). And instead of a full croissant, I received half of a croissant with something that tasted like mayonnaise spread on it. At that point, I was very hungry and didn't want to wait any longer, so I went ahead and ate what was served. The food tasted okay except for whatever was spread on the half croissant. Not knowing whether the errors were his fault or his cook's fault, I decided to tell him what happened so that it would not happen again. I said politely, "The food tasted okay, but you did not serve me what I ordered, and I only was given half of a croissant with something that tasted like salad dressing spread on it." To my shock, this man told me I was not telling the truth and insisted he had served me the bacon/tomato omelet and a full croissant. "I made your plate myself," he said, so I knew then it was not the cook's fault. After repeatedly insisting I was wrong, he said--in an unpleasant tone--"Well, do you want another omelet?" I replied, "No, I just think you should be honest." I then walked away and returned to the Meetup group that I was with, making a mental note not to order anything from this place again. This guy should have been very grateful that I ordered food, considering that most of the members of the Meetup group didn't order anything to eat, or only ordered a beverage. I spent about $10 for that meal. The final straw occurred as the leader of the Meetup group and I were getting ready to leave. Zed said to the leader, "I think your group is getting ready to outgrow the space here." Zed then asked the leader to talk with him in an area where I couldn't hear anything they said. When the Meetup leader and I left the premises, I learned from him that Zed had been complaining about what a bad customer I was. I told the leader how I was treated, and said, "I really like your Meetup group, but I will not order anything to eat or drink here ever again." read more

The cafe is definitely unique in its ambiance, it felt like I walked into an antique shop but I still can't get over my watered down chai tea latte :( I know I shouldn't reflect my review on this one time experience so maybe I'll visit again and give it a higher rating next time. While the breakfast menu was limited, so was the rest of the food menu.. I didn't have much of a great experience, just decent. read more

My favorite part of coffee is really the foam--I absolutely love foam, and Zed gets "foaming" right. The chai latte has a lot of foam overflowing the brim! It was really good. Cappucinno is solid. I loved the random array of mugs they have. Really made the place quirky. I sat by the window with a friend for a chat, and it was great to people watch. read more
