What a great first experience at zaxby's. There was no one at the counter when I arrived but worker Brian Johnson came right out from the kitchen to take my order when he noticed me. I was greeted immediately upon entering the door and was advised to let them know when I was ready to order. I order the same thing for the most part every time because it never lets me down. The four fingers is just enough to satisfy my craving!! Thick, juicy strips of chicken, perfectly breaded and super hot!!! I love the fact that your order is cooked after you order. The fries, the fries, the fries, the seasoning they put on the fries will have you thinking you are going crazy because it tastes just that good!! Dip them in barbecue sauce (.25 extra each) and you are on your way to tastyville!! The meal comes with coleslaw which is a hard pass for me but it smells good. The piece of Texas toast will send your cholesterol into overdrive as it is toasted and super buttery and down right freakin delicious!!! One bite and I promise you'll be hooked, like lips greasy hooked! Staff was friendly and the service was good! The inside is well maintained and had a welcoming feel to it. The major problem I have is with this specific location on W Broad St. I've gone here half a dozen times since moving to the area, just hoping they won't mess up my order, and they have never once gotten it right. I went through the drive thru for a kids meal with a Yelp Coupon & they didn't know how to take the 10% off my meal. So I have heard much to do about this place before and after it opened in Richmond.. I am not sure why, it's just another chain chicken joint as far as I can tell. My tenders were not bad by any means, it was just average. The fries were your basic ore-ida style ripple cut style I can buy in a bag at the grocery store and make at home. Except they were much more expensive here. The menu was a bit confusing for my first time and the cashier was not much help in translating, I think she was new too... So fellow Richmonder's what am I missing about this place because I may not ever come back? Not to promote another business in this review but Lee's Chicken smokes this place! And you don't have to pay for extra sauces, they will give you a bag full to take home if you choose. Even though the service is a little slow, it's worth the wait. The chicken fingers came hot, crispy and delicious. I bought a "family pack" and everyone who had some raved about them. They were devoured in no time. Lots of sauces to choose from too. The fries were pretty good, I prefer natural cut fries, but the crinkle cuts were ok. The sweet tea is way too sweet... we had to cut it with lots of unsweet to drink it. I'm interested in trying some of their other menu items, but I'd definitely go back for the chicken. This location is a perfect example of how not to run your fast food restaurant. While this place is relatively new and may still be "working out the kinks", the sheer number of areas they failed in underlines just how far this place has to go before it resembles a business worth frequenting. Firstly, the extremely long drive-thru line makes entering and exiting the place a nightmare. When you go inside hoping it will be faster, you are greeted with an even longer line of people, many of whom choose to leave once they are told it will take them upwards of 30 MINUTES to receive their fast food order. Not very "fast", is it? The managers here are too busy attempting to fix problems as they crop up to actually get a handle on the situation. The cashiers are new (and slow), the food prep workers can't keep up with demand, and the dining area only gets dirtier as the lunch rush progresses. Worse still, because the food is taking so long, some of those people waiting decided to take up tables, thereby preventing those who actually have their food from sitting down and eating. The "sardines in a tin can" feel only worsened the run-of-the-mill atmosphere of the place, and my friend and I were glad to be out of there... when we received our food 45 MINUTES later (15 minutes longer than their already-ridiculous quote time). On our way to the car, we couldn't help but notice a uniformed employee slip into the enclosed dumpster area and share a smoke with a fellow employee. We were unclear on what exactly was being smoked, though my friend had her suspicions. No wonder the staff here move so slowly. One would think this place must have angelic food to justify such a long line. Not so. Comparing it to similar restaurants of the "good ol' southern chicken" variety, you will find this place inferior to Bojangles, Cane's, and Church's Chicken. The "texas toast" is nothing more than toast you could make in your own toaster at home, and the chicken (while good) is certainly not as flavorful or well-seasoned as that at the other locations I've mentioned. Want a drink? Suuuure... long as it's a diet one, their "mix it up" machine was out of everything except for the diet options (Diet mellow yellow? Not on your life.) I will say that the sauces here are good, though still not good enough to keep this sinking ship of a restaurant afloat. In summary, if you want good chicken, go to Bojangle's. If you want good texas toast, go to Cane's. If you want to wait close to an hour and then not have anywhere to eat it when you finally get your average food, then congrats, Zaxby's is the place for you. (I may return to see if they've improved in a few months, though it will take time for me to justify wasting any money at a place that failed so spectacularly the first time.) Overall: 1.0 star ------------------ Pros: - Sauces are quite good, I would almost be willing to buy some of their sauces... and take them far, far away from here. - AT LEAST they gave customers some warning that their food would take forever to come out. It would have been better to post a sign written in blood, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." Cons: - Poor parking lot design and molasses-pace of the drive-thru line screws anyone trying to get in or out. - Cashiers too slow, food prep too slow, managers too busy sweating the small stuff to fix the big picture. - Delays inevitably lead to overcrowding of both standing room and tables. - "Mix it up" machine completely out of most drinks, save for diet ones. - If you manage to survive long enough to get your food, you will get to experience buyer's remorse after realizing you wasted an hour of your life for generic chicken and toast. read more

A friend recommended this place to me and I went without yelping. I'm not surprised about their current rating. The chicken is dry. Usually have a great experience with my chicken fingers, fries and zaks sauce. Today I decide to be healthy and get a cobb salad (yes with fried chicken fingers) but it's still a salad! Anyway - get to the window, she confirms my order, I pay and get handed a salad with NO CHICKEN on it. I get back to my office, wondering if the chicken is underneath, no chicken to be found on this salad anywhere. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed. Each time I come here the service is great, food is fresh. They are always busy. I will say when coming here everything has it good and bad. I've gotten their wings. They weren't that great. I have gotten their boneless wings. They were pretty good I typically get their kickin chicken sandwich. I love this sandwich. But don't get in an uproar and expect chick fila quality food, because we all know chick fila has healthier food options and do not put seasoning salt on their fries or grill their Texas toast with butter. So don't come here expecting that same quality food. There is nothing healthy about Zaxby's. If you want good food, try and of the chicken sandwiches, tenders or boneless wings. I have had friends highly recommend that I try Zaxby's, even prior to the announcement of stores opening up in Richmond. I gave it a shot during the recent power outage post storm last week, but it didn't leave any lasting impression. I went through the drive thru, wasn't sure what to order so just kept it simple with the #1 combo of chicken fingers, fries and the buttered toast. The food itself was ok, the chicken was moist and lightly battered, the crinkle cut fries lightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the bread was soft and buttery. I just don't know what sets it apart from other chicken fast casual restaurants. I don't feel compelled to hurry back but wouldn't rule it out if I was in the area and was in a pinch. read more

I had heard great things about Zaxby's but they were a total LET DOWN, sigh! We ordered for our office and placed an online order in advance. The food was supposed to be ready for pick up at 11:45 a.m. When we arrived at 11:45 they didn't start making our order until we inquired about our pick up. Then we had to wait for 20 minutes while they made and packaged everything! This is nuts as the whole reason for placing an online order is so it will be ready when you arrive. The staff, while nice, seemed poorly trained and didn't have a sense of urgency that is required when working at a fast food place. The décor and set up was small and felt crowded...lots of booths around the perimeter and tables in the middle. But there wasn't much room for the soda station and people who were ordering/picking up food. It made me feel very overwhelmed and stressed out. I was happy to leave the space. We finally return to the office, now 20 minutes late for our lunch meeting and I start to dig in to my chicken tender plate expecting it to be amazing, NOT. The tenders were small, over cooked, and not worth the time, money or effort that went into getting them. Chick Fil-a is a much better choice and that's where I will go next time. Cheers. read more

For those not familiar with Zaxby's this chain is one of the fastest growing fast-casual franchises in the country featuring freshly made fried chicken sandwiches, salads and platters. It started 19 years ago in Athens GA from humble beginnings by 2 University of GA students. In a city littered with fried chicken drive ups this new comer is more like a cross between a Panera and a Chick fil'A. Think real salad bowls and comfortable booths. My Buffalo bites salad had a classic Frank's style Buffalo wing sauce with better than expected blue cheese dressing in a packet. Their signature girdled toast accompanies all dishes--think Texas toast. My daughter loved her chicken fingers and said it was better than Chick Fil' A. She didn't like their signature Zax's Fries sauce but I liked the mustardy kick so it's not just for the kiddies who prefer ketchup anyway. The fries are on point and their grilled chicken Cobb was still warm from the grill. A real plus and much better than those pre made clamshell salad at Chick Fil' A. Very disappointing. After discovering this location didn't accept internet orders and being instructed to call the restaurant, I called only to find their phone wouldn't be answered. I called during lunch so I expected them to be busy however, I called 10 times! Finally, when the phone was answered, I could hear background restaurant noise, but no one answered my "hellos". I started to feel like Adele! Calling back to the restaurant again several times, it would appear either their phone was still " offline" or I missed my opportunity to place a call- in order as the phone continually went straight to voicemail. One seasoned fry, and extremely salty sandwich later; my fast food experiences are getting worse and worse. Guess I should take the hint and go back to eating clean. Visited the Staples Mill location today. We had been hearing such great things; that while in the area we decided to check it out. We used the drive thru, there were 4 cars ahead of us, 15 minutes later it was our turn to order. Service was ok, not chik-f-let, but by far not McDonalds. We ordered a chicken club, and a wing meal w/wimpy sauce; choosing to substitute our drinks for milkshakes: birthday cake and banana pudding. The rest of my review will be on my order - the chicken club meal with fries and banana pudding shake. Milkshake I stopped after sip two. The banana pudding shake, which I've had at many other places, tasted like they had dumped every sweet n low packet available in it. Never finished it. Meal We arrived home and by this point I'm starving so I think, 'if the food is horrible who cares I'll eat it anyway,' welllll. From the first bite I was so disappointed, the toast was smothered in butter and the chicken in salt. By bite three I decided I loved my organs more, and gave up. The fries were your basic crinkle cuts that you could purchase at any grocery store, they were pretty decent, besides the fact that only one bore the brunt of the obvious seasoning assault that had taken place prior to it reaching my bag.
