Bubble tea and ice cream. Who doesn't like those things? Wanting something nice and cold to enjoy, we chose to hit up Zagu in the Ala Moana food court. I love a good pina colada, so I gave it a go with pearls. It was so smooth and delicious. In fact, it made my "real" pina colada I had later in the evening seem like a big fail by comparison. That one was a rough icy mess. No doubt they are using a Vitamix or Blendtec at Zagu. The pearls were just okay with a few being a bit hard in the center which isn't very pleasant. However, it wasn't too bad and certainly not enough to prevent from me revisiting the next time I'm around. read more

Getting boba is the highlight of my trip to the mall. We got the lava flow with boba and the taro coconut with boba, both were tasty. There was a long line and only one person working. We stood in line for like 10mins which we didn't mind but I'm sure they lost some customers who didn't want to wait. We'll definitely come back though. read more

In the immortal words of our community Yelp goddess, "BLECK" about sums it up. Pure, total BLECK. There is nothing edible about these drinks. Just no. Bubble Tea/Bobba drinks are supposed to be creamy, I thought. Zagu drinks are like smoothies with bobba in them. Weird flavor and combo. I ordered the Lava Flow because it had coconut cream/milk in it, supposedly, but it just tasted like sweet artificial fruit. My son ordered the strawberry banana and he remarked on the overly sweet taste, and he's a candy addict, so I found it surprising that he didn't enjoy it. We paid $13.00 including, yes, a tip, for two-drinks ($1.00 tip). More and more of these places are expecting a tip for just taking your order. Unbelievable. Came to makai market during my holiday shopping and my family and I were craving boba! Found this spot right in the center of the food court and got the lavaflow ice blended smoothie and it was delicious! The workers were very accommodating and grateful to serve me. We have Gone to Zagu primarily for the dole whip offering. They offer vanilla and pineapple, but interestingly our kids like the vanilla flavor which isn't offered everywhere. Most places offer just the pineapple. The service is always very good, and very quick. Especially if there's not a line which There can be sometimes. A cup of door whip isn't so cheap - it might cost you six bucks but we recommend getting a cup with the cone on top if you're a cone fan. Just getting the cone with a large amount of the whip on it might lead to an accident or an unfortunate situation. So if you have to have the cone, we recommend getting the cone in a cup. And you just make get a little bit more dole whip to boot.:) read more

I was entering the food court parched and looking for a drink. Zagu a boba place has caught my little Korean eyes. I went to the cashier and it was a muscular 6'3ft hot Vietnamese man. He most definitely has a profile picture on yelp. I was nervous before ordering so I ask for his name. He said Thomas in the most deep masculine voice. I ordered a mango drink with boba and went to the waiting area. I can't help but notice how amazing this guys music taste is. While watching him make my drink he was so quick. With that speed and the size of his back he had to be a d1 athlete. The service was so quick and when I got my drink he said thank you. Has to be the nicest person I met in my life and deserves such a huge raise. I got my drink and it was the best drink I had in Hawaii. This store provides really bad service to customers I bought four ice creams at this store and asked for a cup holder. The employee (An employee with a beard on his chin wearing a black hat and a white T-shirt) there gave me a cup holder and told me to put it in myself. I asked to put the ice cream in the cup holder again, but He scoffed me and shook his head and went back I would understand if the store was too busy but there were 4 people working and the store wasn't busy at all. Nice to have a bubble tea option in the food court. I personally was happy with my choice.... mango, pineapple orange with lychee jelly. My complaint was the staff. One worker was eating just outside and i stood there not knowing who to order from. They discussed in front of me "you gonna do it?" Ended up the guy eating stopped and helped take my payment and make my drink without washing his hands. I had errands to run at the mall today so I dragged my son with me with a promise of buying him his favorite Zagu boba drink in the Makai Market food court. It made me so sad to see so many of the businesses still closed and the food court practically empty. Please come out and support our local businesses. Zagu had to raise their prices, a boba drink is now 6.80, but with no tourists and no foot traffic in the food court I felt very sad as we were the sole customers of this wonderful kiosk. ZAGU has had a few owners over the last decade, and has assumed new ownership in the last year. The quality difference is noticeable in a GOOD way. The staff is friendlier and their production much more consistent. They started selling Dave's Ice Cream and shave Ice which is always a winner (Green Tea baby!) and they FINALLY accept credit cards which are obvious pluses. They have all your Boba Tea favorites but made more in a smoothie style (I prefer this style to just ice cubes dropped in)... My favorite is to keep it simple with the MilkTea and boba. Pricing is as you'd expect it ranging from about $5 - $6 and change... The staff is friendly, no fuss and they're quick even with long ass lines when tour buses roll into Ala Moana (which is daily)...like I said new operations shed some of the idiots who worked there before and they're running a much tighter ship. From what I heard the owner works daily with his staff. If you need help at least you know you can call on the owner to help. Check them out for a quick mid-shopping snack or a sweet treat after lunch. read more

Heavenly and just as good as the original at Dole Plantation. There are options to eat it out of a cup, cone, or waffle cone and it is offered in three different sizes. Expect to pay $4.00+ (even for the small). The service was good. The guy behind the counter was patient while we were ordering, and while my future F-I-L was attempting use apple pay (we're first timers). He was so nice and even tried to help (thank you!) I admit, I've overlooked Zagu for years! When I'm in the food court, I only have a few things on my mind and dessert is usually not one of them. One of my family members says the bubble tea from Zagu is the best. I actually have yet to try their bubble tea, although the flavors do look amazing. During my first visit to Zagu, I had every intention of ordering their refreshing bubble tea ... but then I got sidetracked and opted for one of their other desserts instead. After eating dinner at the food court, the boyfriend and I were in the mood for something sweet and reasonably priced for dessert. Once we saw that Dole Whip and ice cream were available here, we looked at each other and knew we found our answer to our craving. I think the ice cream is locally made; there isn't a super large selection, but all your basics (strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, etc.) are covered. I ended up getting ice cream, while the boyfriend got Dole Whip. And we got flavors that we both didn't mind trying so we could share. I definitely want to return to actually try the bubble tea one day. But, here's a rundown of what we got: Dole Whip: You can find Dole Whip at some of the random yogurt stores around town, but it definitely makes you feel like you're right there on the Dole Plantation, enjoying some of this creamy goodness. The boyfriend likes Dole Whip because 1) he really likes pineapple and 2) this dessert option is sweet and refreshing, but it's not overly sweet or as rich as some ice creams. I enjoyed having a few bites of his Dole Whip, but I was perfectly content with my ice cream. Cookies & Cream: I love sweets, and cookies & cream has always been one of my favorite ice cream flavors. I'm not sure if this was Dave's Ice Cream or some other local brand ... but, at any rate, it was delicious. Perfectly creamy and generously filled with cookie chunks, just as it should be. Extra thirsty for eye catching Lava Flow with bubble pearls. Taste of my beverage reminded me of a powdery slush with fruity concoction. I already knew the drink was not fresh tasting nor homemade. Customer service was okay.. The two workers weren't really friendly. It was a guys and a girl working at the time. My sister and I ordered açaí bowls which were almost $11 each. They basically just put the açaí sorbet smash it down and then add fruits, granola and honey into a small bowl. The bowl wasn't full all the way, and the bowl is literally small, so you would think that if you're paying almost $11 it would be full, but no. I could go to Haleiwa bowls (THE BEST) and get waaaaay more than this for the same price. Infact anywhere else I would be given more than two scoops of sorbet, not even half a banana, one strawberry and a handful of blueberries. I'm not sure if my taste buds have changed, or if they're using different quality of ingredients? It just doesn't taste as good as I remember. I normally get their mango flavor shake with their crystals. Zagu was the first place I tried crystals instead of the usual Pearls. I love the crystals! To me they taste better than the Pearls, and I'm not periodically choking because one has flown through my straw to hit my tonsils like a torpedo. The last few times I've come here, the drink is tasting more powdery and the flavor is just a little off? Their drinks are on the pricey side, and it's very inconvenient that they only accept cash. I rarely have much cash in my wallet as I'm strongly dependent on my plastic money. I'd also like to add the workers there are almost always zombie like. No smiles...no thank you...you ask a question about their drinks and you get a short 1 word answer in a monotone voice. I think this was probably my last time coming to this establishment. read more

Paying was straightforward and simple. $5.96 for a drink.... Almost killed me on the inside. The wait was kind of long for a lava flow drink? A friend and I spent the entire time just watching the girl blend the drink for the longest time. When we finally get our lava flows, the first thing out of my friend's mouth was: is it supposed to taste like this? I try it and my immediately response is: NO. We basically got sour pineapple juice blended up with ice with strawberry syrup and overcooked tapioca. It was so hard to drink but I forced myself to finish it because I paid $6 for it.
