It is a little bit confusing as someone who had never been here before, so I would recommend checking out the menu before you go. Where we live in San Francisco there are no good Jewish bakeries. Our first experience with Zabars has been very poor. We ordered some bakery items. It took nearly 2 weeks to receive them. Evan though we paid 22$ for expedited shipping. The items we received were terribly stale and basically unedible. We called many different times to report this problem and we were told to call back because the manager who handles this problem was not there. We finally spoke to a manager. She was extremely rude and uncaring. The best she would would do was to refund part of the purchase fee. Not including the 22$ shipping fee. Because of our negative experience I would encourage people to shop elsewhere. read more

Zabar's is a classic, old school NY Jewish deli! When I happened to be in the area of the Upper West Side earlier than I needed to be, I knew I needed to stop in for at least a nibble. The building itself has the exact same facade since 1928. Zabar's opened its doors in 1934! The outside reminded of something you would find in a small town in Germany. Walking in to the deli, it was packed with all kinds of people from tourist to regulars! The vibe here is welcoming. There was tons of choices to pick from that it was more difficult just picking two things. I wish I would have bought a coffee here! For an additional $1.80 you can get your very own Zabar's orange vintage type mug! What a deal. I decide on a small cup of matzoh ball soup and an order of latkes!!! Classic!!! The soup was vegetarian too so I could partake. The prices were super cheap. I got to pick applesauce or sour cream for my latkes. I went the applesauce route. The soup was perfectly balanced. I could easily become addicted at a closer location. I loved the tiny chopped up celery and carrots and the hearty matzoh ball mound at the bottom of the bowl. The older gentleman, Charles next to me was super nice to me and we chatted it up. I asked him questions about the place and he politely responded to all of them. He was with a group of friends. I overheard one of them has a son playing in a band that opened for Sammy Haggar! NY is a funny place. And Zabar's I know now why you are so loved and iconic to NY! read more

As an out of towner lookin for NYC Locks! I was directed to Zabar's from some locals! When I got there i was delighted to see nice store, and was surprised by its size on the outside! The inside was even better! It was neat, orderly and the smell of the food inside was amazing! I ended up getting some bagels, then headed over to the fish counter for the Nova! Shout outs to Michael S. for chopping it up with me, and giving me the brief history rundown of the shop! Also Michael was really helpful in making suggestions for the Nova! Five stars for the lox ! It is out of this world ! The store itself is an epicurean's delight. Since I live out of state Ny, I ordered two pounds of their nova Lox and it was extraordinary. Lord Jesus, if there's a heaven, it has a Zabar's. The best nova and bagels on the planet. I'm not kidding. I eat a lot and the salmon here is pure heaven. They also make my favorite New York bagels. You need to pick up a bagel from the bakery and then take it over to the appetizer counter to have them make the sandwich for you. They have ready made ones in the refrigerator, don't do it - get a freshly made one. It's more expensive, but does heaven really have a price tag? They also make the best black and white cookies. Enough has been said about Zabars over the years to write a book -- or ten. Probably the best deli/market in the United States but I've deducted a star because their bagels are not good at all. Strange because their breads -- especially Eli's famous Onion Rolls just melt in your mouth. Absolute Bagels on 108th Street blows them away. But you do have the BEST Nova Lox I've ever tasted and it better be at 40 bucks a pound! Sliced razor thin -- and have it with an Absolute Bagel, Scallion Cream Cheese, an Heirloom Tomato, and thin red onion. THAT'S a NYC Breakfast that you can't get here in LA. I also love their cheese, coffee, and pickle section -- the smells alone are enough to get you into that New York state of mind. read more

This Holiday, I decided to mail one sister the lox and bagels for two, and the other carb-free sis the pound of Lox (best tasting lox Anywhere!! She makes them with scrambled eggs). A couple days before the shipments were to go out, I find out one sister is going to be away for a full week visiting the grandkids in AZ. Oy! I emailed customer service and received a speedy reply from Joi M that she got my email, went into the system and re-addressed that gift to the address with the grandkids. I had a few exchanges with Joi M and she was..well, her name says it..a JOY. In this time that we are living in, it shocks me now to receive such warm, professional and excellent personal service. Yes, the Next Day Ground Shipping is expensive, but way less than a plane ticket + airbnb or hotel in Manhattan. My sisters received these gifts exactly when promised and adored them. Lox review only. This is where my family's always gone for lox, and even after trying the stuff at their neighbors for comparison, I still believe Zabar's has the superior nova. I never usually comment on these sites, but I am so disgusted by the HORRIBLE Customer Service that I received last week that I felt I had to! FYI, I received a surprise Zabar shipment of goodies from a friend last month. It had some delicious Zabar goodies and it came with a  Zabar insulated tote. When I went to use the tote last week for a picnic, it was completely falling apart.  I am so surprised by the quality of this bag. As this only arrived last month, I contacted Zabar about it last week. I could not believe their attitude and the horrible customer service! We went back and forth 5 times and they don't care- I did not have a receipt since it was a gift and I told them I didn't want to ask my friend ( I wonder if they are reading this?). I sent photos with the tags still on it. Anyway, I am so disappointed with their pettiness on a stupid tote, especially as it is free publicity on their part. What a great grocery store! They have a bountiful selection of breads, pastries, and deli items. They also have a cafe where they sell their fresh bagel sandwiches. I got the classic nova lox sandwich on a sesame bagel and it was delicious! They gave a lot of lox and you can tell the bagel was fresh, too. I would highly recommend checking it out! read more

I came here on a Friday around 11:30am. This place is busy all the time. I don't know if there is really a GOOD time to go. Probably the earlier the better. I came here looking for Lebanon Sweet Bologna. Preferably the double smoked. My go-to brand is Seltzer's, but I can't seem to find it in NYC. Zabar's carries Weaver's Sweet Lebanon Bologna. This is the only place in the city that I know carries the bologna of my dreams. I grew up with this bologna, and have been (inactively) looking for it in NYC for the better part of a decade. The deli guy said they don't sell a lot of it. Not a lot of people ask for it. I don't know why they still carry it if that's true, but I'm so glad they do. Go get your Lebanon Sweet Bologna, and maybe they'll start carrying more varieties! read more

Zabar's was on my radar for a bagel, lox and cream cheese as I had never been here prior. I didn't go into the grocery store but I went into the shop next to it. The ordering system was messy in terms of the line. Also, my order was wrong but I picked off the red onions from my bagel. The bagel itself with the lox and cream cheese was yummy; lox super fresh also. I was just annoyed at the lack of seating inside and that my order had red onions on it. They didn't ask for names either - just called out what you ordered. Not impressed with the service OR lack of seating; I stood outside and ate my lunch. The iced coffee was really good as well. Ah, Zabar's--another NYC classic! When I was reading a list of "places to check out in the UWS"--Zabar's was on it, and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Potentially hundreds (thousands?!) of different cheeses, different appetizing dishes, coffee, just... seemingly everything. I agree that a choice move would be to pick up some items at Zabar's and go for a stroll to Central Park for a picnic (note to self to try that when the weather is decidedly not polar vortex). These are the types of places where it's so lovely to see succeed, and you want them to. Because they are family owned businesses that are still standing in NYC despite the astronomically soaring rents, the mass construction rising above what used to once remain. Walking past Zabar's and strolling in makes you hope that it will remain for many years to come. read more

No problem with the quality of the food. The service experience at the smoked salmon counter could have been a lot better. The older man slicing salmon moved at a snail's pace for the customer in front of me. There was a second employee behind the counter but he was at the time not helping customers. We waited patiently and when the older man finished with the customer and it would have been our turn , he just walked away without ever acknowledging our presence. The second employee then helped us and we have no complaints about him. The first guy needs some training to be working in customer service, but I guess if you serve tourists day in and day out you become indifferent. I have managed to forgive Zabar's for their crayfish debacle (for the uninitiated, https://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/12/nyregion/sold-as-lobster-salad-but-a-key-ingredient-was-missing.html ), and just in time too, since I now live nearby. The crayfish thing was a pretty low move, but I think all stores would try to mislabel their product if they could get away with it, to some extent... This grocery store is really a wonderful presence to a neighborhood of Manhattan which real;y doesn't have all that many good restaurants, so having great grocery stores eases that burden (another great grocery store on the UWS is fairway). The kosher items over in the grocery store are wonderful, but specifically I'd like to commend the cafe on the left next to the grocery store. The items they sell here are priced extremely reasonably, and they're of great quality. Among my favorites are definitely the soups, along with the baked goods. I like the chicken and corn chowder, the salmon chowder, and the chicken and okra soup; as for the baked goods, I'm a huge fan of their onion roll, which is not available all that often. It's especially good because the onion on the inside of the loaf manages to stay nice and moist, so it gives the whole bread a nice sweet taste- something that onion bagels never quite manage to achieve. Other items which seem quite popular here are their sandwiches (paninis), which are popular with the lunch crowd, and of course, the bagels. I'll likely make a follow up review for some of the products in the grocery section, since this review is more towards the products offered in the cafe. Still, I can't see that significantly changing my impression that Zabar's is a great place, and that the UWS is fortunate to have it- it's just too bad that the hours here are somewhat limited. read more

This is 1/2 a to-go take out and a grocery store. If you want a bagel sandwhich - you can't do it. But the trick is to buy a bagel from the take-out and bring it to the grocery store where they can make you a sandwich. Win, win! Except- it just went downhill from beating the system. The quality of a NYC was very disappointing and if you want pastrami by the slice (min. 1/4 of a pound) but you can get a sandwich- but you might as well get the 1/4 b/c it's cheaper. All that aside, the quality of everything wasn't there. I actually didn't even feel good afterwards and that is not from carb overloading. I really wanted to love you. Zabars is a NYC staple for kosher and non kosher specialty food. This super market and cafe is always packed regardless of the time of day but is worth the wait. They always have a huge assortment of pastries that are delicious my favorite is the babka! In the cafe is great to get a quick breakfast or lunch with an iced coffee that is strong and delicious.
