We have been to Z several times and enjoyed it but this time it had changed. The Philly cheese was greasy bun, one translucent piece of cheese, and a wilted piece of lettuce which was weird and yesterdays meat. The Hawaiian Katsu chicken bowl was a fail with dried out chicken pieces and a poor attempt to hide the fact with yesterdays sauce. I had to ask the wait staff for condiments and sweetener for tea. I wonder if they have new management. I am disappointed when a great place becomes a less than it has been. read more

A friend of mine was excited to share her go-to spot in Bonsall. Z Cafe is probably one of the most impressive restaurants I've ever been to in the US post pandemic... Why? It's like an art gallery and restaurant in one. I really enjoyed the paintings by Steve Barton showcased throughout the rooms, especially on the way up the stairs from the lower level. What a grand entry!! I love that they have dishes that have rice, pasta, and bread/sandwich options for my family--the 3 of us in my family have different preferences for carbs. I really love their Hawaiian meals. Quality of the beef and chicken is super fresh. Taste, service, presentation are excellent. The price? Unbelievable! Huge portions for under or around $10. Food: It's been 8/10 great. The last 2 visits were different and a little less than great than previous visits due to a few changes. The chef from our first few visits was not there the last few times it seems like because the home fries were missing the same great taste and when we asked for the bell papers that usually came with the home fries, they sent out raw bell peppers. Beautiful area for the Cafe. I suggest parking in the lower lot if you don't mind the stairs. There just happens to be roomier parking and not crowded at all for a Sunday. It helps for taking a baby in and out of the car. Our wait was 35 mins. The host took our number since we waited downstairs of the Cafe. Hard to hear them from upstairs. The waiting area is covered in gorgeous paintings. The food was cooked very quickly after ordering. From the time we sat to the time we left, 45 mins had passed. Our server Tiffany B. Was FANTASTIC and so professional. The bussers were so kind as well. They helped clear our table so we could be more comfortable after finishing all our food. Huge tip: $6 mimosa on Sundays. Came here with a friend for breakfast. We walked through the doors and there was some very nice artwork inside and going up the stairs. We were greeted as soon as we got to the top of the stairs. Very friendly staff. It was pretty busy but the food we ordered came out fast. I ordered the monte cristo omelet which consisted of ham, turkey, American and provolone cheese with hollandaise sauce. So good! Also ordered iced sugar-free vanilla latte which I loved. Very reasonable prices with big portions. Who could ask for more. My friend ordered corned beef hash with eggs. He loved that. We also split an order of biscuits and gravy. No complaints there. Great breakfast, great company and great atmosphere. I live in Missouri, but I will definitely be back when I visit my daughter. The service and drinks were excellent, and the happy hour menu large and appealing, and it's a lovely location and venue. While I did not have dinner there, the place filled up quickly, and I was intrigued by the beautiful dishes being delivered to the diners. They have one of the best happy hour menu's I've seen. I genuinely think their happy hour is the best in the area. Our bill was $100 for 4 people who ordered several entrees and beers/wines. this has always been our " go to place" . we went last night got there at 5pm were told we had a 25min ish wait for the 3 of us . after waiting 45 mins i went up to the hostess because i noticed a group of 4 being seated before us and had arrived after us . the hostess did apologize starting she didn't know why the other hostess did that and sat us next. our waitress was lovely we ordered right way cause we had to be somewhere - out food took another 45 mins and again people next to us had been seated after us and got there food before us - we ordered salads nothing over the top time consuming . I ordered the Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice dish which is a well known dish in Hawaii. I thought I'd compare since I was born and raised in Hawaii. As it turned out the sausage was well too greasy and I ended up taking half of it home. My husband's egg Benedict was perfect. I tasted his food and loved the Hollandaise sauce. Awesome! My husband mentioned to the waitress about my greasy sausage meal and she was nice and apologetic to say that I should have said something about it to her and she would have gotten me something else and will mention it to the chef. Well, I made it to the Z Cafe in Bonsall. Nice location for sure but if you try to drive there from the coast, give yourself time. It can be busy on the highway and the North River Road route has housing projects that slow traffic down. The service is top notch: attentive food servers and bussers ready to get you anything you need. The food is great! I had an Avocado Lime salad with chicken and it was perfect: flavorful, fresh and not too heavy on the dressing. So if all this is the way it is, why four stars instead of five? The noise. Due to the construction and open tables, it is the noisiest restaurant I have been in in a long time. It was consistently distracting to try to communicate with my food mate. And this person was sitting right next to me. The wait for the outside patio was too long so we opted for inside. Perhaps the outside is better. All said, it was worth the visit so just be prepared if you are noise sensitive. read more

I was at Z Cafe when Jacques C was at the restaurant. He berated the server for 5 minutes over a bowl of soup. He did insist, at that point, that she had done great and that it wasn't her fault. She attempted to make it right but he wanted his meal comped and that was obvious. He made a point to threaten her with a bad review on yelp. She did apologize again but he did not get what he wanted and is now claiming she gave him bad service. We had a great experience until this guy engaged us, cussed at me and asked if "I wanted to go outside" because I told him he was being a bit aggressive. He did a good job of proving me right. I wouldn't take any review he leaves seriously. He is unhinged. Our service was and always is fantastic! The food is good, the staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean and well decorated. So, many times, my family and I have ordered food from Z Cafe for pickup. I've noticed over the past year or so that the quality of their food had declined, but I excused with "maybe they ran out of . . ." or something else. Last night was the final straw! A few years ago, when I ordered the Pulled pork Kahlua sandwich, there'd be so many fries I wouldn't be able to finish them all. And there'd be tons of pork and BBQ sauce. Now, I can grab that many fries in my fist. That means it's deliberate. They grab a handful of fries that cost them about $.35 and charge you about $5. And they do the same with the meat, BBQ sauce and the rest of their menu. And this is far from being the only thing on their menu that's gone down hill. I went there with some friends a few months ago. I and one of my friends both got the Reuben. Both of our sandwiches didn't even have enough sauerkraut to spread across the entire sandwich. Z cafe! I'm done. My family and I will be ordering our sandwiches from Village Pizza from now on. Much older disabled gentleman and a younger woman came in after we had been seated and my GOSH! the way she interacted with him was lightyears different. Spoke loudly (as it appeared he had a hearing impairment), referred to him as sir, held a conversation while also tending to her work. Her ability to communicate with different people in different ways is such an essential attribute that most of the new generation lacks. Truly just an all around good kid!
