Only because I have to do a star to tell you about the No star service. My lady & I arrived shortly after opening. There were many open tables w/4 chairs. We were denied sitting at one of those tables because we were only 2. Despite there being SO many tables, I do realize that it is their prerogative on who to sit where. I'm ok with that. Rather, it is the rude & pretentious manner in which the hostess treated us. Wow, I have to say - the rudest & most pompous individual, I've ever encountered. Even at that level of help. I don't necessarily associate good service with rooftop bars from personal experiences. When my friend suggested we go to Z Bar for drinks and to catch up I almost suggested to meet somewhere else. Anyway, we made it to Z Bar and I immediately felt at home. We went outside and found very comfortable couches to sit on and blankets for use. The waitstaff were all welcoming and on their game. It was the perfect environment to catch up with friends over drinks. Maybe I got lucky because it was Friday night and not completely packed but I loved my night. This is a Racist bar and the reception/ host girl is Racist. They dont allow Asian get outside balcony spots or even any spot near the window. FYI, all outside balcony spots are non reservation needed, it is first come and first serve. The story is: We arrived at non busy period. Almost no people at the balcony area. But the reception girl told us all outside spots were all occupied, and even all the empty tables near the windows, we were told that we can not sit. So... we were put at the very corner of the room at the entry area. Later, we saw ppls came with no reservation, and the host girl take them to the outside balcony spots and other good spots also. And we saw there some other "poor Asian" like us was push to the corners of the bar also. SO, Sadly, the conclusion is: the host girl or this bar culture is to limit Asian from good spots. Even though we dress properly, we respect the place, we spend hundreds on drinks a night, we still can not be treated fairly or be respected by this place and people there. Compared to most rooftop bars this one was just okay. The view isn't anything to write home about since your basically just looking out over Michigan Avenue. The food was a let down as well and quite pricey. We had the Waygu Sliders for $22 and the 3 little sliders were over cooked. The Frites we tried started off okay, but then something about the taste (can't put my finger on it) got weird and we stopped eating them. I definitely wasn't a fan of the wings. A rooftop bar atop the swanky Peninsula Hotel - Z Bar matches the hotel's aesthetics. It's definitely a place for people to be "seen", enjoying views of the Hancock, Water Tower and Mag Mile. But holy shit are drinks expensive. Cocktails primarily start at $18 and run up from there. That's Aviary prices folks, give me a break. My old fashioned was good, but no different than any other cocktail joint. The mezcal-based one I had was very meh. If you want to feel very posh and bougie, this is the place. My father and I were looking for a nice place to get a drink during his visit to Chicago, and were excited to try Z Bar, tucked away on the rooftop of the Peninsula Hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the woman at the front desk very helpful, but we were sorely disappointed with the service and left before even ordering. We asked the bartender to see a menu, and he shoved a QR code towards us brusquely without saying a word. Neither of us could get our phones to show the menu, and the bartender watched us struggle, making no move to help. I asked for a regular paper menu, and he said there weren't any. Finally, he tried to get the QR code to work on his phone, and it didn't work for him either. Instead of telling us what drinks were on offer, he just looked surly and annoyed, as if we were the ones who had inconvenienced him. We left, as the bartender seemed unable or unwilling to provide basic service. A place of this caliber ought to have regular, paper menus as an option - this is a basic requirement, there is no longer a rationale for not having them, and even the bartender couldn't get the QR code to work. More importantly, at a place like this, you are paying for excellent service. At a dive bar, I don't mind a surly bartender, but here, you expect not to be treated rudely, or as if you are the one inconveniencing the bartender. read more

Amazing cocktails, rooftop views & vibes. I met up with a group of friends here on an early Saturday afternoon and had a PERFECT time. So much so, we stayed until the sunset. Friday night I'm looking around for how I'm going to celebrate the Kentucky Derby. I never celebrated it until this year. I find a deal online that's almost too good to be true. $40 plus processing fees for Eventbrite comes to about $47 for unlimited Mint Juleps from 11 am to 7 pm. I show up like 11:35 or 11:45. I half expect to find out I was duped into an internet scam. It was the real deal a bonafide bargain. I drank in the beautiful Z bar for hours on end. Switching from the bar to the outdoor patio where you get a view of Michigan Avenue, water tower and water tower place. The bar didn't have the tin mint julep cups or Lewis Bags and mallets to crush the ice. I'm a cocktail connosieur. Even though that wasn't there still great experience. Told one of the bartenders I prefer my Juleps a little sweeter and when he was making them he added more simple syrup. As it got closer to the race more people started showing up. Had some good conversations with some folks that weren't even there to celebrate the Derby. There's a gorgeous window to the sky in the bar has a nice oval shape. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Moved us from table to sofa when we asked, and turned on the outdoor fireplace when we asked. The bar snacks were tasty. Kettle chips and nuts mix. Drinks were a little pricey (of course,) but the view was very nice. I wasn't fond of the way the wait staff and other patrons had to walk where are feet were, when sitting by the fire. The seating could probably be moved around a bit so they could walk behind. Would come here again. read more

I am a sucker for a good lounge. Sometimes you just need to go to a place like this to sit back, relax, and enjoy a Saturday night. My boyfriend and I visited on Saturday night for just that reason. It took a bit of work to find this place but once we did we were glad. We only waited about 20 minutes for a table 9:30pm which I wasn't mad about it. The view is great, the menu just as unique as the drinks, and the vibe is laid back chic elegance. I enjoyed the Stange Magic and my boyfriend got the New York Smash. We siped on those for about an hour before heading home. Overall a very pleasant experience. We will be back! read more

After watching a movie in downtown my daughter and I wanted to have a drink before heading back. So based on the location and yelp reviews we decided to check this place out. As I walked into the front entrance of the hotel I was immediately attracted to the beautiful decoration. When we arrived at the bar we tried to sit on the outside patio to enjoy the views but it was too chilly and windy so ended up sitting inside, which was fine. I ordered a drink what the server recommended and it was the best tasting cocktail I have ever had. We also had marrow poppers and zen garden. Marrow poppers were delicious and I really loved the vegetables, especially the smoky taste of broccoli was wonderful. The complementary olives were very good. Excellent service. I only drink occasionally and was happy to find a great place to enjoy the food and drinks. I will try again the next time I come to visit my daughter in Chicago. read more

Started off on wrong foot! I tripped in street entrance lobby, still kept going disappointed with broken sandal. Needles to say it was embarrassing crossing main lobby and two elevators to get to Z Bar. Upon arrival at the bar, I noticed my group of 12ppl were hovered around a table for 6. We had two pregnant woman and one with 4wk old baby, seating arrangements didn't work at all. Finally the mgmt moved our group over to long couch area which didn't help either since we couldn't mingle sitting 10 feet apart. Hard to hold conversation with this setup. Drinks are okay! I had ordered Paloma which was interesting, another interesting fact - they use paper straws which is neat however it gets wet as you sip making it hard to drink your b On a positive note, I ordered chicken skewers which were perfectly cooked. Was here a couple of weeks ago there was a one-hour wait to sit outside happened to score a table inside while we were waiting to be seated Outdoors. Drinks are very expensive expect to pay anywhere from 18 to $24 for a cocktail they were however delicious. Service was definitely slow and not up to par but I'm assuming this is because it's a brand new bar and they're still working out the Kinks. Nice rooftop The View was definitely great however it's not very elevated so there are better views out there in the city. We ate currently guest at the Peninsula Chicago and have visited Z bar both nights. First night-asked to sit outside by the fireplace to enjoy the weather and beautiful views. Someone is sitting at the fire-pit so we sat at next closest table. 30 min into our drinks-lady at the fire-pit asks for it to be turned off. Spoke to the manager and he had no answer. Made zero sense that one guest could dictate the experience of everyone else in the place. Then waited for a check which took forever and when it finally did arrive, no pen. Tonight, waited 5 minutes for a host, the another 5 min for a waitress to take our order. We finally flagged down a young lady who to her credit was wonderful. I spoke to the manager and asked if the level of service was normal for a bar at a Peninsula property-having stayed at other Peninsulas in Asia and NYC. Observed other guests waiting for a hostess also. He had no answers and honestly don't seem to care. He seemed more bothered we were questioning him than providing answers. Very disappointing as I don't care whether you are at the Peninsula or an Applebee's-you should be acknowledged. Service at the other restaurant on site-Shanghai Terrace was amazing. The Z Bar experiences have soured us on staying here on future trips. read more

I really enjoyed this bar! It's a beautiful place in river north to have a good cocktail on a beautiful day. The bar is located in the Pennisula hotel which is lovely to walk through. I can't quite remember how high up we were but it was a pretty view. The drinks are expensive but they are very good. My boyfriend got the Manhattan which was $18$ and I got something disco, can't quite remember the name, which was $22. The service was very nice. You receive olives and cashews to snack on while you drink which I LOVE little bar snacks. read more

The murals are nice, bar was comfortable liked the rooftop deck, may go back for that some time. $40 for two drinks, about average for a hotel bar. However, my husbands drink was made right away, mine waited while the bartender talked with his friends at the bar. I did appreciate that he noticed that one of the water glasses was dirty so he replaced it, but I still waited several minutes after my husband got his drink for him to even start on mine. And if everything that goes into the drink is measured then I should get the entire drink, nothing should be thrown down the drain, but this was not the case. Glass was overfilled with ice and I watched as he poured some of my $17 drink down the drain. I will almost always give a place a second shot, so if we find ourselves in the area we may be back. read more

While communication was a little challenging at first, they definitely stepped up and KILLED IT. Special kudos to Martin Moreno (manager, led the staff, went above and beyond), as well as our primary server (Amber) and staff (Gabriel). They included special items on our menu, printed up special menus for our special occasion, and just did an amazing job from start to finish. The food was delicious (particularly recommend the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, Tuna Tartare, Burrata, Wagyu Sliders, the Chocolate Obsession, and the Tarte Tatin), the drinks were great (specifically the Peach Ring Bling Bling, The Z, and The Pen20) My fiancee, her friends, and I all felt like the highest priority that afternoon. Very disappointed in this place. We are guests in the hotel and tried to have dinner last night but checked on the walk in status. We were told there were no tables and to wait, not given a time estimate and didn't take our name or number or anything. Two women walked in and asked for a walk in table and were immediately walked to a table and i asked hostess what the deal was and she said "they are in house guests"... but so were we and miraculous she found us a table shortly after i complained. Maybe that's where i went wrong because after we were initially greeted by a server, we never saw her again and after multiple requests we were assigned a different server and our orders were taken an HOUR later. I checked on the status of our food after 30 more minutes and then our food was promptly delivered. The food and drinks were delicious and the views and ambiance are amazing so it's such a shame that service is so beyond terrible. read more

Food food, great drink selection, very attentive service and a relaxed outdoor ambiance that has enough wind moving to make a hot day quite comfortable.
